I think was a really good book, The concept was clear, the character were described in good details, hardly any errors made. I love how it intertwined Sci-fi with some fantasy in it.
This books starts out with a little bit of a prologue into the story, at first you're kind of like "Um what's going on?" but then you get into the actual story, where is starts out with a young man named Quade. He's on a planet, acquiring information on some of the uncharted "nexus's" which are basically tamed black holes, used for quicker space travel amongst the planets in the universe or multiple universes. He lives on the planet Bethel, he is in love with the Keystone's Daughter and future Keystone, named Trina. Who is a loving and caring woman, one who doesn't have a belly button. She cares for her people and makes sure they are well taken care of. Clea is Trina's best friend, Clea also has a friend named Avalon who is a muse and is only seen by Clea, and anyone he wishes them to see him, or is in need of a muse.
Quade also has been having weird dreams and has been hearing strange voices which makes him think he's going insane. Well come to find out he's not going insane it just two entities that work for the gods named Echo & mimic... they're quite funny I think. But they guide Quade through realizing he has a destiny, and guides him through it. Avalon is Clea's guide to her destiny which, she refuses to acknowledge. Quade is a chosen one, as well as Clea, I think Trina is another one, but not quite sure on that.
Clea is a well known smuggler so most of the book, she's out smuggling goods for a guy named Ryder. Possible enemy? or possible Lover? or possible aly? who knows.
They are chosen to fight the SanFear a formless creature made by the gods in their first attempt at creation. It goes and seeks what it can and sucks the energy out of everything on the planet, and caught in space.
Their destiny is too destroy this, Quade isn't sure he truly believes in his destiny until the Keystone is possessed by one of the SanFear. Then while Clea is still refusing her destiny, Quade is on a mission to find what he needs to rescue the Keystone, and his beloveds father. And Well Trina, she's basically clueless in all this.
At the end of the book, however it comes to where Clea can't get home, and Quade ends up getting the SanFear out of the Keystone, but is being hunted by the Keystones guard for attacking, the keystone. It basically cuts off with Trina sitting with her father, Quade gone no one knows where, and Clea stuck in space cause the planet has been shut down for travel due to the attack on the Keystone.
I hope more is answered in the next book, and I can't wait to see what unfolds next.

"All she could think of now was the events of the previous day, all she kept hearing again and again in her mind was Quade's voice, all she kept seeing was the confused desperation that flashed in his eyes.

When I initially began this book, I was unsure as to whether I would like it or not. Having not long finished the god-awful Neuromancer by William Gibson, my opinion on the genre of sci-fi was well in need of a lift. Neuromancer was my first attempt at reading the genre so as you can imagine, I was eager to find a book which would prove that the genre really is something for me - Legend of the Chosen seemed like the perfect book and it was definitely up to the task.
The novel begins with the introduction of the figure of Quade and we are made almost immediately aware that something isn't quite right within the galaxy. Following my reading of the first chapter, I will honestly admit I was worried. It wasn't captivating me in the way a book usually does, but I continued onto the second chapter regardless. The novel officially had me hooked following the introduction of the character of Clea. She is, in my opinion, the most intriguing character within the book. She's a strong, successful, independent woman who is most certainly not afraid to stand up for herself. The unveiling of her occupation as (what can only be summarised as) a smuggler solidifies the character which has been successfully built up around her by Selzer and Huber. Her relationship with the royal daughter Keystone, Trina displays her compassion and warmth which only assists in making her a character everyone loves to read. Once the novel begins to display the unusual goings on within Bethal and the Galaxy as a whole, her figure becomes all the more intriguing as we itch to discover her role within Quade's quest.
The use of Clea's muse, Avalon, and Quade's emmissaries of the gods; Mimic and Echo create an entirely otherworldly feel to the novel. Selzer and Huber's use of these figures are incredibly successful in adding this mystical sensation to the novel and allows credibility to the quest that Quade, Clea and one unknown other will soon be on - whether they accept it or not! The development of the quest is wonderful to read. We are given the slow and painful process that Quade experiences as he comes to realise that he isn't, in fact, going insane. The voices inside his head are real, solid figures. The things he has been dreaming of are things which have happened or will happen if they don't try and stop the SanFear before it's too late. We are confronted with Clea's fear that the words that Avalon once said are now beginning to come true. She is shocked that the words are coming from none other than her best friend, Trina's boyfriend, Quade. The novel itself ends on a cliffhanger which is excruciating - Quade commits an act which endangers the Keystone, his relationship with Trina and has kicked the war between The Chosen and the SanFear into full throttle.
Does Clea join Quade? What are the consequences to Quade's actions with regards to the Keystone? I can't wait to find out! A must-read for any sci-fi lover.

Flunked the 100 page test. Selzer crammed thirty pages of world building and introduction into a 100 pages. All very forgettable. A hundred pages in, I don't even remember how it started.
Tries to be a science fiction quest fairy tale. Never engages the reader in either the world nor the people.

Legend of the Chosen by Jennifer Selzer & Daniel Huber
When I saw the covers on these I almost passed them up. Between the title and the cover for some reason I had the impression this was another christian remake of the bible. Not that I don't appreciate those- they just are not tops on my list.
When I realized it was the beginning of a new Mage/Science-Fiction series I picked it up. I'm mostly acquainted with Debra Doyle and James D. MacDonald in the realm of MageWorld. I enjoyed those though they often seemed more into romance so maybe Mage-Romance.
I don't mind the blend of science and magic. I really enjoyed this fantastic universe of Magic and technology.
This series seems to want to throw in some sort of myth that blends into a god created universe, which of course can never be told without the great dark evil. This dark evil seems to be more like a wild voracious energy being that feeds upon the living energy of other creatures. It also seems to be able to feed on most everything else, but apparently feeding on souls seems to be it's highest sustenance.
So we never really get to know why god created the great dark evil in the beginning but he did and there are four of them that seem to roam the universe.
There are legends, which are prophecy in this universe, that there are three chosen who can defeat this evil.
In this universe through some -perhaps other creation of god- there are black holes (I may have this confused) that have been tweaked to make nexus points which give access to the leylines that connect the universe.
Our hero, Quade, is about to discover that there have been strange things happening near the nexus points.
Ships are mysteriously abandoned and whole nexus have been destroyed. Quade experiences a first hand encounter with this dark cloud-like entity; the experience seems similar to someone having a really bad migraine. He can see the creature because he's the chosen seer and he's the only one who can see this. Though his purpose is to report the finding of new leylines and nexus points, which are discovered by the Venrey, he is reluctant to report all of what he's heard and seen; to the Keystone of Bethel. Although the Keystone is like a father to him and is his employer, Quade has a problem with two imaginary voices in his head (which have now manifest as two fairy like beings, Mimic and Echo, calling themselves emissaries of god) that have tried to caution him about revealing too much of this to anyone. The dark entity can enter into anyone and remove all of their knowledge and telling other people will put them all in danger. Only the chosen are immune to this invasion, although the chosen can be easily killed by the creature anyway.
As it turns out everyone is in danger anyway. The Keystone will soon be compromised and our reluctant hero will have to find the three chosen to save the Keystone's soul. These chosen may be people close to him. Quade has several friends in Bethel. Unfortunately he can't discuss things with them unless he's sure they are the chosen or he will put them in grave danger.
Clea is another pilot and makes smuggler runs in her ship Duplicity.
Trina is the daughter of the Keystone and is Quade's lover.
Aazrio is like security and bodyguard around the Keystone's household.
Clea has a mysterious friend named Avalon, she's the only one who ever sees him. He's some sort of Muse who can be seen by others but is easily forgotten. Avalon has taught Clea to be a compendium of knowledge of true history as opposed to the misinformation in most legend.
When things go badly for the Keystone the only hope is the legend, which is prophesy. Quade must be made to understand it all and he must find P'cadia and the Ave' in order to save the day.
There are a lot of players in the story and you almost need note cards to keep track. But the authors do a fair job of keeping things straight. The largest part of the story is the riddles and puzzles that have to be unfolded to get to the meat of the story.
For Quade it becomes a quest to save the Keystone and in so doing save his love Trina. In the end he must accept that he has to save the universe. Nothing is written in stone; as Quade discovers that there have been several groups of chosen that have come before him and failed.
This first book is the story of Quade's quest and struggle and it's the introduction of this Mage Universe and all of the intricacies that drive the magic and politics. It's accomplished quite well within a short number of pages, although it can become a daunting task to keep up with it all. It is sometimes frustrating that gods emissaries are either too cryptic or have not been told everything that Quade needs to know.
Anyone who has read other Techno-Mage type of fantasy fiction should love this one. It has Romance and intrigue and mystery and the big bad all well paced and has just the right ending to take you into the next book.

Jame is trying to protect his family from the SanFear yet is unable to reach them in time. Jame appears to be lost in time and space. Meanwhile Quade Decarius, a collector of information for the Keystone Aushlin ValVassu, is awaiting a meeting with the Venerey named Thanach about newer leyline being searched out. As usual, the Venerey are late which puts Quade several hours behind schedule and nothing that he can do about it. Thanach finally arrives for his meeting with Quade and shares some disturbing news~a leyline nexxus has been destroyed along with other strange signs as well. Quade tells Thanach that he will be on the look out for any more strange sightings. Trina or Kitrina Daughter Keystone is doing her usual routine of painting portraits for her people at low cost to them which frustrates Clea Colletta to no end. Clea appears to not show how smart she really is yet intelligence burns in her young eyes. Clea is visited by her Muse Avalon which Trina pays no heed too. Avalon shares stories, legends, and prophecies with Clea because she has a special destiny despite saying she will create her own destiny. For the past several months and years, Quade has been dreaming of a place that seems to be familiar yet out of reach at the same time. Quade also believes that he's going insane because he hears voices in this head. Mimic and Echo are emmissaries of the Gods sent to help Quade gather the Chosen out of legend for an upcoming crisis. Will Jame resurface? Where can Quade find the Chosen? Is Quade going crazy? Will Clea accept her destiny? What will happen to the Keystone and Trina? Your answers await you in Legend of the Chosen.

Legend of the Chosen was sent to me by Jennifer Selzer, and as soon as I read the description I knew I wanted to read and review it! I loved how the book started straight away. I've mentioned in previous posts how I dislike being spoonfed the story and the world it's set in but Selzer & Huber got it just right. I feel comfortable in Bethel without having to have the minute details given to me.
The characters were wonderful, my only wish was to have a little but more knowledge about them individually. I feel like I know Quade well enough but it would be great to know more about Trina, Clea etc. This is the first book in the series though so maybe that comes later!
The story itself was gripping, especially towards the end when the action was getting started. I can't even begin to explain how exasperated I felt when I saw the words 'To be continued' because I need to know more! I think i'm right in saying the next book is now available to buy and I will definitely be picking it up in the future. It was a great read and a perfect mix of Sci-Fi and fantasy - two genres that I can never read enough of.

Definitely kept me entertained, with characters that were interesting and dialogue that was realistic. A good editor would have been good to remove some of the slower, world-building that frankly could have been left to other books in the series. I'm also not clear exactly on the villain, at least at the emotional level of wanting it defeated. I read once that the original final battle in "Blade" was with Deacon Frost turning into an amorphous blob, but audiences couldn't connect so they went with him just being a super-vampire. Similar issue here, there's no connection with the evil, it just exists and frankly the story of its existence is a little silly, which doesn't help. Fun read though.

Great story and character development. A little repetitive at times, but overall a good read.

Unfortunately, I can only fairly give this book a weak 3 stars. I found it hard to follow and didn't enjoy being confused so much. It also would benefit from more polish.

Good but not great. Feels very long to read and though the characters are good the plot takes its sweet time to get going.

I can't believe it ended where it did. It feels as if only half the book. Now I have to get the next book in order to finish the story.
