Wow. I feel emotionally shellshocked after reading this. This is definitely one of those books that is going to stay with me. Forever.
I sobbed. Not just like a lot of tears, like 100%, full-fledged weeping. Many times. .... But I also laughed.
This book is beautiful. I don't know how else to describe it. It has also totally rearranged my definition of 'kink'.
But also, and very importantly, the point of the book was not the kink. It was the emotional journey that the characters go though. The sex isn't the focus of the story, its part of what conveys the story.
This is a love story. Its a story of unconditional and immeasurable love. All kinds of love.
I'm very much of a "hero meets heroine and they live happily ever after, no other partners ever" kind of reader. But for some reason, the 3-way relationship that developed in this book didn't set off any of my 'alarm bells'. With the way it was presented it, I totally accepted it with all my heart.
The only thing that still got to me was the 'Master/slave' thing. I don't mind the Master thing even, or the sub thing, but I personally just don't like the word 'slave'. But again, with the way the book was written and with the way the story was presented, I was able to accept it.
And I really liked the explanation of the title. I was wrong about what I thought it meant. I won't spoil it for you, but I really liked how it was explained.
I highly recommend this book is you are looking for a book that will make you FEEL.
Its beautiful.
I've never read anything like it. And I can't stop thinking about it.
I don't know what else to say... except that this book should come with a box of kleenex.

PS If you are not already somewhat familiar with the BDSM world, I'd say that reading the Fifty Shades trilogy is a must BEFORE this... It will help ease you in so that when you read this, it's less about the culture shock of the world, and more about the love story. Just my opinion :)
EDIT: I'm writing this about 3 weeks after having read the book and I just wanted to say that I haven't been able to get it off my mind. I've read many books after (although it took me several days before I could even contemplate reading another) and still, I can't stop thinking about this one. I think Kaden has definitely made my list of fav book male characters. His strength is so haunting. I found a song that for whatever reason, I have associated with the feeling from this book and I've been listening to it a lot. It's not the lyrics of the song that I connect with the book, but I connect the "feeling" of the song to the "feeling" of the book. It's Hurricane by 30 Seconds to Mars (the version featuring Kanye West, not the one without him).

Kaden and Seth were lifelong friends. When Kaden found out he was dying, he made one request from Seth that threw his friend’s already messed up life in disarray - to replace him as his wife Leah’s Dom and husband after he died.
Seth not only had to live with the fact that his best friend is dying, he was also thrown into a crash course of the D/s lifestyle and to deal with his conflicting emotions in doing what’s best for his closest friend.
I first came across this book when I first started reading two years ago. At that time, I was still green when it comes to BDSM materials so I put it in the back burner. I am glad to finally tackled this one and I wasn’t disappointed.
The Reluctant Dom was not about BDSM or romance. It’s about the unconventional and unbreakable bond of friendship and love. Beyond the collar and the whips, it was simply a beautiful and heartbreaking journey of three individuals in accepting and preparing for the inevitable.
Kaden and Seth were a complete opposite. Kaden was the successful and wealthy lawyer and had been married to Leah for a long time. He was organized and a meticulous planner.
Seth on the other hand was struggling to keep his life together. Both his business and marriage failed, but he always fix it as best as he could without depending on other people. What I love the most about him was that he was real. Probably the most real character I’ve read. He was imperfect, had body hang ups and had warring feelings about their arrangements. He provided a lot of angst.
Leah was such a hard character to handle. She was so emotionally fragile (due to her past) that the two men were constantly walking on eggshells. It was emotionally taxing to anticipate her mental state.
Even though the book centered on (an impending) death, I was glad it was written in a light manner. There was a lot of laugher in the beginning that I doubted if this book was supposed to be emotional. The doubt was shattered after about 80% when it became hard to read, so I was glad for the lighter part earlier.
The book is not for everyone. It could be painful for people who had personal experience in the matter. But if you could handle emotional pain, you might find this as a power reminder how much love and support could help you through the darkest hours.

I chose to review on the older version because I cannot stand the new cover and don't want it in my book list lol!

Awesome book but keep Kleenex at hand

What a moving, emotional book! I have to say it is the most I have ever cried reading a book, yet at the end I had a wonderful, euphoric feeling. What a friendship between the main characters Seth and Kaden, very deep, platonic love almost godly. What a lifestyle, heavy bsdm is definitely not appealing. I could open my mind to read about it, but it was sort of a turn off- not romantic. There was plenty of intimacy though and the love in the relationship of Seth, Kaden, and Leah was so earth shattering it was beyond describable.
The Reluctant Dom did not capture me immediately. It was written from Seth's point of view, I know some people despise first person, it didn't bother me. I felt like I was reading a "B" movie script, the dialog was very corny at the beginning, Seth kept repeating "Kaden's Dying" which was annoying me, the torture/bsdm was uncomfortable. Once I got to about page 75 everything changed, I bought into it and the plot development was so much deeper than the kink.
Seth had been best friends with Kayden since he was a baby. Kayden has the perfect life in Seth's mind, he is a successful attorney, rich, accomplished and has a loving marriage to Leah who Seth adores. Seth on the other hand is unsettled, he had joined the army trying to find himself, has had three unsuccessful marriages to women from hell who had cleaned him out, he is currently living with his brother and going back to college. Leah's life before Kayden was hell, she was abused and unloved throughout her childhood and when Kayden and her met she was abusing herself. Kayden came into their bsdm lifestyle to protect Leah, she felt safe when Kayden mastered her and she was his perfect slave. Then Kayden tells Seth he is dying and he wants him to come live with them and take care of Leah after he is gone. Both Leah and Kayden reveal their lifestyle to Seth who is shocked and doesn't understand how he can inflict pain on Leah. Seth commits to both Leah and Kayden because of his unselfish love for them both, but he struggles everyday to understand how he will go on after Kayden is gone and live his lifestyle. I think that is the theme of this whole story "unselfish love" not bsdm. I felt Kayden was the true hero of this story, he gave so much to both Leah and Seth "unselfishly" he prepared them for the inevitable with his undying love.
I am tearing up just rethinking this book and trying to write this review, that is how touching it was.

I highly recommend this book to my friends that like touchy-feely heart wrenching, love stories with lots of angst oh and lots of crying.
I however, am not one of those people, so I found this book to be tortuous to read.I have never been so relieved to finish a book. This was a heart wrenching story of Kaden, who had just discovered he had pancreatic cancer and had about a year left to live. Kaden immediately asks Seth, his lifelong best friiend, to not only move in with him, but to mary his wife, Leah, and become her Master after his death. I imagine this was a tearful journey for most as Kaden prepares for his impending death and his wife and Seth deal with their grief.
I personally don't care for this type of book, even when well written as this one was. I don't enjoy hot shower sex, immediately followed by Seth leaning against the tiles sobbing, and this was a frequent occurrence. I got tired of his internal dialogue of "Kaden's Dying". He would think this about once or twice a day... throughout the entire book! Short of Seth moving in and learning to be Leah's new Master, nothing new or interesting happened in the book. I was beyond ready for Kaden to die by the time it happened, not because I'm heartless, but because I had become bored by 60% of the book.
If Kaden's planning for Seth to marry Leah wasn't a little weird, things truly got strange after Kaden died. Yes, he died, and I don't feel that that should qualify as a spoiler. I won't give much more away as not to ruin the book for those who haven't read it. This book was a 2 star for me, but it was very well written and I can see how others might could love it.

OMG OMG love love love this book..... Will be adding it to my collection so I can re-read in the future :)
More then just a BDSM and Erotic book.... This book show us how far a husband will go to protect his wife ( even after death) and how what a TRUE friend will do for you even tho they may not want to or understand it.
Book that will have you laughing out load, crying buckets, and give you goose bumps :)

"I love you, bro." "I love you too. Still not doing you." -Kaden and Seth
Ok, people, don't judge me lol. After reading Fifty I found out I had a passion for Erotica (you can all thank Christian Grey for that!). Anyway, I was just looking for more Erotica, not necessarily anything revolving around BDSM. This book was recommended to me by a friend on Goodreads, and I'm glad she did.
Let me start by saying, I haven't cried like that at a book since I read Forbidden by Tabitha Suzuma. The Reluctant Dom is an extremely emotional book, that focuses on 3 people coming to terms with the fact that one of them is dying of cancer.
It's Kaden that is dying, and he asks his best friend, Seth to become his wife's new husband and Dom after he passes. Kaden completely struck me from the moment I started reading. I felt for him. Seth was a complete sweetheart, listening to what his friend has to say, and not judging him in anyway. He later agrees to let Kaden train him in the art of BDSM and lets him move in with him and his wife Leah.
Don't be deceived by the the cover or the title of this book. It deals with a lot more than the lifestyle of BSDM. The Reluctant Dom, deals with BDSM as more than just a lifestyle, it deals with it being the help that these three people need. I know that may seem weird, but it's really hard to explain without giving much away, you'll just have to read it to see for yourself.
I pretty much fell in love with this story, it touches your heart completely and it was Seth's inner turmoil and his guilt over his friend that begins to break you apart. It was his moments of crying himself to sleep, or crying in the shower at remembering that his best friend is dying that begins to get to you. And it's Seths' selflessness to give up the life he knew to help his best friend make the transition from old Dom to new Dom easier for his wife, Leah. Leah is a very complicated character, she relies on the pain from BDSM to deal with her inner emotions of having a traumatic childhood. And Seth has been in love with Leah from the day he met her, Kaden knows this, and so knows that Seth is perfect for the job. He sees that Seth will be able to look after Leah, in more ways than one. Giving her what she needs to help her survive once Kaden passes.
Tymber Dalton, managed to create a story surrounding a personal tragedy and entwining a lifestyle that you would never associate with said tragedy. It's a wonderful story, and it truly moves you to tears, I believe I read through wet eyes for the last half of the book. You know what's coming and you're waiting for it, but nothing can prepare you for when that moment comes, it was slow to build and the descriptions of Kaden's decline in health and his jaundice that started me. I went completely over the edge! Nothing can prepare you for Kaden's end. Nothing at all. It's extremely emotional and heartfelt. You'd be cold hearted if you didn't cry.
I do recommend this book. However I recommend you read Fifty Shades of Grey first, as that will ease you into the BDSM lifestyle. This book is extremely powerful and centres around personal tragedy and sacrifice.
Also, this book is for older readers, it does have a lot of graphic sex in it, including male/female/male ménage. So please, please...only read this if you are 18+.
Other than that, it's a wonderful story, and I don't regret reading this at all. However you will need to at least read some fluffy YA after all the emotion, heart ache and crying.
On a high note; here's a line that had me roaring with laughter:
“In a fit of Christmas spirit, Kaden had equipped her with a red and green holiday collar, complete with several jingle bells. Their own little pornographic elf.” -Seth

My review
I feel numb after reading this book. I freely admit I am an emotional sap. I’m the kind of girl that can cry over the right commercial. But it’s been a while since a book has made me feel this way. Still I continue to reflect over these characters. I rarely re-read entire books. But I find myself considering re-reading this one and I’ve only just put it down.
In simple terms, this book is about three friends that have to deal with the loss of one of them. This story shows how they cope and plan, laugh and cry, and then move on when tragedy strikes.
This book’s title may deceive you like another book. This book is more than the BDSM title suggest. Yes, there is sex in this book and plenty of it. But there is meaning behind each act. There is a point to everything that goes on. This book differs from the other book that many talk about. There isn’t a bad boy that needs to be saved. But there is someone or more than one that need to be healed in this story.
I find myself very much in love with the martyr of the story. How can you not love someone who is so selfless to give up everything for your happiness? I think I may have found my book husband. His name is Kaden.
This author has succeeded on so many levels. I don’t know that I would have ever thought to mix BDSM with personal tragedy in such a way and succeed. Who would think a book about this subject would have you in tears to the point you finish a box of tissues? Certainly not me. For the most part, I was unable to put this book down and finished in one day. I have to give my hand to this author and will look for more books by her.
I recommend this book to mature audiences. Those who love Fifty Shades of Grey will love this book. It’s is very different than that one though.

I feel numb after reading this book. I freely admit I am an emotional sap. I’m the kind of girl that can cry over the right commercial. But it’s been a while since a book has made me feel this way. Still I continue to reflect over these characters. I rarely re-read entire books. But I find myself considering re-reading this one and I’ve only just put it down.
In simple terms, this book is about three friends that have to deal with the loss of one of them. This story shows how they cope and plan, laugh and cry, and then move on when tragedy strikes.
This book’s title may deceive you like another book. This book is more than the BDSM title suggest. Yes, there is sex in this book and plenty of it. But there is meaning behind each act. There is a point to everything that goes on. This book differs from the other book that many talk about. There isn’t a bad boy that needs to be saved. But there is someone or more than one that need to be healed in this story.
I find myself very much in love with the martyr of the story. How can you not love someone who is so selfless to give up everything for your happiness? I think I may have found my book husband. His name is Kaden.
This author has succeeded on so many levels. I don’t know that I would have ever thought to mix BDSM with personal tragedy in such a way and succeed. Who would think a book about this subject would have you in tears to the point you finish a box of tissues? Certainly not me. For the most part, I was unable to put this book down and finished in one day. I have to give my hand to this author and will look for more books by her.
I recommend this book to mature audiences. Those who love Fifty Shades of Grey will love this book. It’s is very different than that one though.

I've been putting off doing a review of this book. I really don't like slamming a book, but I am really sort of horrified by the concept that the characters in this book are portrayed as being "normal" lifestylers. I know people in the lifestyle. I know people who have grown up in horrific situations that left them traumatized. I've worked with abused children and teens. They get counseling and medication when needed.
To use BDSM as a "treatment" for Leah's extensive, crippling neuroses is simply...I don't know. Bad. Very, very bad. And that's a huge understatement. Its no different than self-medicating with alcohol or drugs. Then to put this into an erotic romance?
As to mechanics, I wasn't blown away, the author overuses the "Kaden's dying" phrase to the point it becomes trite. The emotionalism was just too heavy for my taste, completely lowest common denominator.
I did not finish this book, nothing was able to rescue it for me. It could have been a masterpiece of writing, but that would be irrelevant given the mind boggleing misuse of BDSM in this story.

DAMN YOU MS. DALTON! Oh my word I cried throughout this book. I have been extremely reluctant in reading this book because of the mixed reviews, despite my love of most of her books.
The detractors of this book had warned me of Leah's questionable mental health problems which are medicated by the BDSM lifestyle. I am not fond of this type of presentation either because those not in the lifestyle may take this as an example of how BDSM people are all mentally unstable. The beginning of the story with Leah's history did disturb me a bit. As I read more, my queasiness decreased and understanding increased. This is because I was shocked into an epiphany that I didn't really want to know about myself. Still, Leah's need for pain is really secondary in this story.
Ms. Dalton does an excellent job explaining the BDSM lifestyle. Not only does she do an excellent job, this book is really not even into the edgier parts of BDSM which was surprising. Her two main characters, Seth and Kaden BROKE MY HEART! This is why I curse Ms. Dalton. I fell in love with Kaden. He's the dom I'd love to submit to, every day. He's the 24/7 dom who makes a sub feel cherished, loved and protected. What I loved most about Kaden was his careful planning. He love for his wife and his best friend touched me especially because it's not only what I like to do, but what I wish would be done for me. Kaden's death from cancer was beyond heartbreaking. It wasn't so much his death but the process of his decline and how short of time he had to ensure Leah would be protected.
Seth, what can I say about Seth? He's an amazing friend who does everything he can to help his best friend Kaden. The struggle he goes through to come to terms with losing he best friend and essentially taking over his life is monumental. Kaden is the perfect wealthy self made man. Seth, from the surface and initial look is a total screw up. He can't get his career together nor can his love life be deeded as a success with three ex-wives. It was interesting viewing from Seth's eyes the BDSM lifestyle. It gives me perspective of what my poor husband might be thinking.
The more I read the story the more I loved it. This story is definitely not a happily ever after, more like a bittersweet ever after.

I had to wait a few hours after finishing this book before I could write this review. I have NEVER in my life cried while reading a book as much as I did during this novel. I really and truly wept.
The Reluctant Dom is a tricky book to categorize. Is it BDSM? Yes, but not the typical story you’ll read in this genre. The hero is truly a reluctant Dom. Being a master is not something he craves or has ever desired for himself. He falls into the lifestyle by accident as a way to help his wife cope with some deep-seated psychological scars. It’s something she needs to mange her emotions, and the fact that he has lived the lifestyle for 20 years for her is a testament to the depth of love he feels for his wife.
Is it erotica? Yes, but again, not typical. There are hot, sexy love scenes that will leave you panting—but it is in no way an easy or light read. There is an intense emotional depth to this novel, one that is usually not found in erotica, trust me, I’ve never cried so hard reading this genre before.
Is it a Ménage? Yes, but if you’re looking for the average story in that genre you would be disappointed. The novel is not intended to be a book about three people in a romantic relationship. This is a story about a husband/master looking out for his wife/slave by making sure there will be someone there to care for her when he is gone. Kaden brings Seth into his relationship with Leah knowing in the end it will be a relationship strictly between Seth and Leah.
The bond of friendship between Seth and Kaden is so deep and so strong it’s heartwarming to read. The concept of this story immediately grabbed my attention and reminded me of a line from one of my favorite songs. “Lean on me when you’re not strong, and I’ll be your friend. I’ll help you carry on.” Seth is the kind of friend you can lean on, and Kaden is the epitome of a selfless friend and husband. This story will linger with me for a while to come. The fact that it doesn’t easily fit into one specific genre tells you that Tymber Dalton is not a cookie-cutter writer. This was a very touching, emotional book about friendship, trust, and love. Forever and beyond unconditional love. Love between a man and woman, men and woman, and two men whose friendship has spanned a lifetime.
Leah has had a troubled past and is a self abuser. She is the love of Kaden’s life, and in his desperation to help her he recognizes that if he can control her world and her pain, that this will provide the structure and release that she needs in order to heal and lead a “normal life”. He becomes her Dom and she his sub. Now he is dying and his devoted and loving wife of twenty years stands a good chance of falling to pieces if he cannot find someone to take over his role as her Dom. He fears for her life. Kaden turns to his childhood friend Seth to step in for him. Seth is initially appalled by what he sees, and questions Kaden’s choices and this lifestyle. He has his doubts that he can assume this role until he sees for himself that everything that Kaden does for Leah, is out of love. What ensues is a very compelling, intriguing and wonderful love story.
This is a very well written book that exudes love and a range of emotions, gives the reader an insightful look into the world of BDSM, and an ending that will leave you sad, satisfied and smiling!

Less than five stars for this book would be a travesty!!!
Normally if I love a book, I will plough on at full speed until finished, no matter the hour!!!
However this book was different.
I found I had to walk away from it. Not sure if it was guilt for feeling like a voyeur of their emotional and heart rendering relationship, I certainly became emotionally involved to the point where I was pondering the situation through out my day, or more than likely because I was trying to postpone the inevitable??!!
I must say that is also hard to read when your vision becomes blurred trying to read through the copious amount of tears that just kept leaking from my eyes!!!!
The fact that I too battled with these conflicting emotions, is a testament to the Author.
This book is first and foremost a story of Love and Friendship.

I've just finished this book and I'm clutching my chest.
This was such an emotional read. I cried many times through it and it really did touch me deep.
I'm not a real fan of a lot of BDSM books to be honest but this book is so much more than that.
In this book the relationship between Seth, Leah and Kaden is explored and it is done so well that you really feel the deep love and emotion these three go through.
They share a deep bond and knowing throughout the book that Kaden was dying had me reading the whole time with a huge knot in my stomach and pain in my heart.
It's taken me a long time to get around to reading this book and I'm so glad I finally took the plunge. This book will stay with me for quite a while that's for sure.

3 3/4 Stars. I can't won't give it 4 stars due to my frustration with Leah...... and the fact that I'm completely stubborn. God, I feel like the Reluctant Reviewer....... Sh*t this one's a toughie. How does one review without giving too much away???
This is a story of a PERFECT husband Kaden, GOD
hisstupid ass emotionally broken wife Leah, and his best friend Seth. Kaden is dying <---You're going see this line A LOT. If you are anything like myself, it's going to annoy the HELL out of you. I felt I should warn you. Kaden ask his best friend to fill in his footsteps once he's kicked the bucket. Leah's been through a lot in her life, her ass needs "Special attention" (literally) in order to feel emotion . Kaden (god this man is amazing) the "Master" must teach "Sir" Seth how to keep his wife alive once he's gone (do you see why Leah frustrated me???) Seth agrees to move in with them so that Kaden can prepare him for his future.. I loved the friendship between Kaden and Seth **side note**---> I was praying for a Kingsley and Soren type friendship. I found them to VERY entertaining characters both individually and when communicating with each other. Seth struggles with many different issues throughout the story "kaden is dying" and is honest about his trepidations (wow, reading is sprucing up my vocabulary :-) ) his monologue about said weirded-out-ness was one of my favorite parts of the book.
My problem with this story was Leah.

..5++++++ I LOVED LOVED LOVED IT!!!!! .
For the last few hours I have been trying to fine coherent words to express how I feel. My emotions are raw and all over the place right now that I cannot stop sobbing as I write this review. This is one of the most amazing stories I have ever read. This story is not only about BDSM. But about friendship, love, passion, loss and most importantly unconditional love. Kaden who is dying of cancer ask is oldest and best friend Seth to take over is beloved wife Leah and become her Master/Dom/Husband after his death.
I fell in love with Leah, Seth and Kaden. I had a strong connection with all three characters that i felt i was right there with them in this difficult journey. The unconditional love in this story is what broke my heart into a million little pieces. Seth drop his life to be there for Kaden and did everything he and Leah could to make things as easy as possible for him. As well as Kaden for his friend and wife. When Kaden died I felt that I lost my best friend. I cried like a baby and felt this pain in my chest as if i was right there with Leah and Seth, and we were all mourning together. In some ways I was able to relate to Kaden because i too been a victim of cancer. I've been dealing with ovarian cancer for almost 4 years now. At the moment I am in remission and doing and feeling great. While reading this book.There were times that I had to stop reading because I was a mess crying. I also tried to convince myself to stop reading it. But I couldn't because I was hocked, the characters were so easy to love, and the story was so captivating, beautiful, and the sex scenes (ménage) were HOT HOT HOT.

There are so many ratings on this that I know I don't have anything new or thought provoking to add...I just want to say that I was surprised how much I truly loved this book. I thought the dynamic between the three main characters was so interesting and beautiful. You could just feel how much they all loved each other, although I think the true love story here was not between Leah and Kaden or Seth, but between Kaden and Seth especially. This was my first Tymber Dalton and I look forward to trying another.

I am sobbing my heart out...I want to give this book 10 stars and more!!!
This book has every human emotion in it that makes for a fantastic read. It has LOVE, Passion, Hope, Sorrow & Courage.
It was extremely beautiful; so well written!!
As a reader it took me through one of the most intensely emotional, painful, heart breaking and torturous journeys I have ever experienced. I can't even adequately describe just how amazing this book is and how emotionally exhausted I am from reading it.
Kaden and Leah have been married for 20 years when Kaden is suddenly diagnosed with progressive cancer. His prognosis isn't good, in fact he is dying, (am crying as I am writing this!) Kaden propositions his best friend since childhood, Seth, to take over from him after his death as Leah's Dom. The reasons behind this proposal are utterly heart breaking and harrowing!!
Seth has recently divorced wife number 3 and is in the process of re-starting his life, yet suddenly finds himself in a situation that seems beyond anything he has ever seen or been a part of before and understandably he is not sure he can go through with it.
I absolutely loved and admired Kaden. He was without doubt one of the strongest male characters I have ever read. His love is unconditional. The strength he shows with the knowledge of his impending death is remarkable. His love for both Leah and Seth gave me the chills. I adored him! I loved his relationship with Seth, it broke my heart yet at the same time it made me laugh out loud at times.
"I love you, bro" - Kaden
"I love you too. Still not doing you." - Seth
Kaden is why this book worked as well as it did. When we get his voice it touches your soul and his controlling nature in life in general, and in death, and his intense focus on Leah broke my heart.
I really loved Seth too. The pressure this guy must have felt to do right by his best friend had to have been immense. The inner battles he has with himself over the impending death of his best friend, the guilt of his love for Leah and what he is being asked to do. When he is reminded of his friends death, when he cries in the shower - I was sobbing!!! Seth is literally giving up his life as he knows it by agreeing to be trained by the 'Master! and acquiring a 'Slave'....
As this story is written in Seth's POV it makes this story REAL. I went through the emotions Seth did and questioned as he did. It made his reactions REAL and Honest and therefore completely understandable!!! Again, he too showed true strength, love and compassion.
In my opinion, this story was more about Kaden and Seth than Leah. Yes, Leah is the centre and the reason for the proposition, her traumatic past and lack of coping mechanisms being the catalyst. However, it was the story of Kaden and Seth that mostly resonated with me. Their brotherly love for each other.
For me, this book was not so much about the sex or the lifestyle. It was about personal tragedy. How to cope with the loss of a loved one and go on living. The love of a good man who worries more for the people who have taken a piece of his heart than he does about himself.
I have to say that knowing Kaden was dying from the beginning was difficult. I was waiting for it, just like Seth, watching out for the signs. However, saying that, nothing prepared me for just how badly I was going to feel it...how emotional those scenes were.

This is an emotional book. If you are not down with that, it may turn you off. I was attracted to it like a moth to the flame. It hurt to read it and the situation brought back many difficult memories, but I made it through and am glad for the experience.
Seth is the best! Love that man. Kaden is great, but a little too perfect (he needed a flaw to make him seem real). Leah is one hurting unit. I did not identify with her, but was glad to see her grow into her own.
It is easy to tell that the author has experienced death by the way she portrayed it in the story. My only complaints are that there were a few too many "kadenisdying". Also, the joke "I'm still not doing you, Man," was only funny the first few times it was used. I thought the guys were going to make it happen because they loved each other and said it so often. I was thinking, "Thou dost protest too much."
Overall, I enjoyed this novel and would recommend it to anyone who wants some substance and a lot of drama in their BDSM book.

I dont even know what to rate this. It was a dnf for me. Not because it wasnt good but because I dont understand it. I can't fathom how bdsm can "fix" someone with such major issues as what the heroine had. Then have her moving into a relationship with another man because her husband was dying and she *needs* bdsm to survive?? how do you even grieve?- I dont know, it was too hard. So I quit.

5+++++ HEART MELTING, GUT WRENCHINGLY, EMOTIONALLY DRAINING Stars
I have to say that this was one of the most difficult books I've ever read. I thought I was emotional reading Losing Hope. I teared up a little while reading that book. This book, had me doing the ugly cry with sound effects. All I can say is... WOW!
I had wanted to read this book for some time. But just never got around to it. All I can say is that I didn't know Ménage could be so deep, as one of my goodreads buddy's pointed out to me. And of course that's not really the focus of the story. It's about love and the many different forms it can take. Its about being there for those you love even when you are uncomfortable, about telling and living in your truth, taking the time to really know yourself and what you are capable of.
I'm not giving anything away because it's in the the description of the book, but Kaden, after three independent doctor visits, has to inform his best friend and his wife that he's dying. And due to his wife, Leah's, tragic past, he needs to make sure she's taken care of after he's gone. Enter his best friend and self proclaimed "screw-up," Seth. They've been as close as brothers, their entire lives, but nothing could have prepared Seth for what Kaden would ask him to do, let alone the many emotions he would go through during this journey. They were all flawed characters in their way, but when they came together, they were a happy and loving unit. It was beautiful to read how much love these two men had for each other and how Seth was willing to step up and go out of his comfort zone to do whatever Kaden needed. It wasn't a hardship to love Leah, but he had a lot to learn. The journey was funny at times, even sweet. But, it was definitely tragic and emotional.
Throughout the book the author has Seth keep hearing in his head

over and over again at different times to show how this keeps intruding on the joy of their lives and how they all are together. And each time it happened, I crumbled and teared up. It was this constant drumming in the background of the story, which would ultimately remind Seth and me, as the reader, that things were not going to work out.
When it got to the very crucial part of the story, I cried like I haven't cried in years and with any other book...and I read a lot. I could barely read at times. I would have to take breaks. Now I have a headache and just want to sleep.
I tell you my next book will have to be lighter, because I feel beat up.
As I said, I didn't expect this emotional journey, but I would definitely recommend this to anyone who wants to read good writing and read an emotional journey.

It broke my heart. It's a beautiful, emotional, loving, at times erotic romance of love gained and love lost. Tymber Dalton has another fan! It is the developing love and interdependence of three people who end in a polyamorous relationship for a time, till the tragic illness and untimely death of one. It tracks the history of each and how they became.
It does contain elements of pain given, and pain received but my view is, it is not punishment in any way, as it's given with love and concern by Kaden and Seth for their damaged love in their lives Leah, as this is her way of processing the emotional trauma she's endured. She wanted and in her view needed to feel physical pain in order to process her emotional pain. For those critics who have not experienced how this pain exchange works, think before talking of things you know nothing of, because sadly many thousands and more do understand that mental pain is more traumatic to many than physical pain and many Mental Health Professionals are aware and acknowledge this too. The day by day heartbeat realization that pounds Seth's brain that 'Kaden's dying' as he reluctantly watches his terminally ill best friend slowly waste away, fighting the pain & debilitation of terminal cancer, will resonate strongly with those of us who have endured similar in our lives...that constant reminder that thwarts the denial we want to have, yet can't be. Tymber takes you through the trauma...and leads you through the grieving, denial & acceptance stages until you end with two of the three lovers trying to move onto the next stage of their loving relationship and regain as near a normality as there changed circumstances can ever be. The surprise that got me was the realization of who was The Reluctant Dom! No hesitation giving this book 5 stars for content or English standards. One warning I would offer is, this is a very traumatic story and if you are emotionally vulnerable this could effect you negatively.

Need to process this.... holy hell....
OK.... slept on it and pondered it. I loved this story. Sadder than hell, but also way hot and funny. I LOVED SETH! Adding him to my book boyfriend list... I loved the way the story was told from his POV and his reactions to BDSM... to finding out that his best friends were into it and the turmoil he had with what was being asked. I loved the unrequited love, and I loved the deep and strong friendship. I cried like a baby when Kaden passed and the beauty of that scene. Highly recommend.... Thanks to Karen and Ruth whobullied encouraged me to read it...

I LOVED THIS BOOK. LOVED LOVED LOVED IT! I feel like I can't make any justice on my review because words can not express what I felt reading this piece of perfection.
My buddy Candace told me to read it and I was as reluctant as Seth when Kade asked him to join them. Well, let's start...
Kaden & Leah have been married for a long time and Seth is Kade's best friend. The thing is Kade is dying, he's got cancer and he knows he is going to die so he convinces Seth to take care of Leah once he is dead. Leah has issues, she needs to "feel the bite" and Seth is so not into BDSM so he is not 100% sure that he is going to be able to live up to their expectations.
"Some people, for various reasons, need pain. They use it. It's how they function, how they deal with their emotions. Some use it to help relieve intense emotional pain in an external way. Some use it to feel like they're connected to life again. Some just flat-out get off on it"
Yes, this is not your easy romantic book, this is MUCH MORE than that but hey, it's also funny. Seth keeps remembering Kade that he is not doing him during all the book. I really LOVED their friendship.

After the inevitable happens the book gets even better. I really hope there were more people like Kaden, he was such an amazing hero, one of my favorites!
I could not control the tears while reading all the cards Kaden left for them, the dvds, everything...

"How much of our lives, any of us humans, do we live spent in fear of some sort?"
Having survived something like that, it shows a person they can take more than they thought. It tempers the soul, and if it doesn't destroy you, it can make you stronger
The only one good thing about cancer is you have time to say goodbye and this was Kaden's goodbye. I know how Seth & Leah felt after he was gone, no one would replace him and he will always be with them no matter what...
I really recommend this PERFECT BOOK to all my buddies, go read it, you won't regret it.

Final thoughts: After reading a few more books since I finished The Reluctant Dom, I'm ready to give my final review on it. I wondered if I'd still feel the same way after some time had passed. The answer is YES. I LOVED it and this is why: it hit on several cylinders for me. It's sexy. Thought-provoking. Emotional. Different. And written well. I was engaged from the first to last page. What more could one ask for? Even though much of it was predictable, I couldn't wait to read what would happen next with the characters because the author made me care about them.
How far would you go for the one you loved? Does their happiness surpass your feelings of jealousy...or piousness? How would you spend your last days if death was imminent? Who defines the rules for your relationship, you or society? How do you find the strength to move on after you've lost the one you love? After the sexy scenes are over and you've gone through a box of Kleenex, you may find yourself thinking about these things too.
Initial thoughts: I stayed up until 3:30 this morning reading The Reluctant Dom. I HAVE to tell you how much I'm loving it. I forced myself to put it down at the 58% mark. Around 45%, I thought my Kindle was going to catch fire. 45-55% was HOT as Hades. I know the sad parts are coming, but I'm really glad I started this one yesterday. Loved the reference to James Spader in the movie Secretary (2002). I watched quite a few fetish/BDSM movies in preparation for Sleepy Willow and this was one of them. He also starred in another off-the-wall fetish movie called Crash (1996). Anyway, back to The RD. I was about to beat my head against the wall with all the "kaden'sdying" repetition and baby/babe name-calling. BUT underneath all the nitpicky crap is a captivating story. This is so much more well-written with more multi-layered characters than other more popular BDSM-themed books. If you are looking for something in that genre, I highly recommend The Reluctant Dom. I can't wait to get back to it.

I finished this book yesterday and spent the entire day trying to come to terms with my feelings about it. Don't get me wrong, I liked it, but I was unable to think past the tragic parts and actually say what is it that I liked/didn't like in the book. Things are clearer now, but forgive me if I don't manage to explain myself completely.
Seth and Kaden have been best friends their entire lives. So when Kaden asks for a favor, Seth immediately accepts, until he actually hears what Kaden is asking him for.
Let's get this over with first: Kaden is dying. And there is no miraculous recovery, so be prepared to cry.
Anyway, back to the favor. You see, Kaden's wife Leah has had a horrific childhood. She lacks the coping mechanisms that most of us have. Dealing with feelings was damn near impossible for her unless she can release them with pain. When Kaden realized that, they started to slide into the Master/slave relationship. That is something she desperately needs. And with Kaden dying someone needs to take care of her when he's gone.
And so a training begins. Seth has a limited amount of time to learn the ins and outs of a M/s relationship, and all the while there is the realization that Kaden is dying.
This is an emotional read. With all of them aware that the end is near, they have to deal with a lot of stuff. Not to mention, Seth and Leah coming to terms with the love they feel for each other.
I can't say that I understand what they are going through, or the decisions they made. But I can sympathize with them.
I only wish that more time was devoted to Seth and Leah after. Seeing more of them (and not through Tony's eyes) would've been better and convinced me that they will be happy. I need more!!!!

Solid 4.75 Stars
So I loved this one.. You're probably wondering why I didn't give a full 5 stars then.. Well.. here's the thing... It's so weird. Cos although I have this very strong, emotional connection with one of our heroes, Seth, I still can't physically place what this man looks like. The reason why, is cos the author never gave me a foundation to work with in this regard. My mind's eye is completely blank in regards to Seth. She gives vague descriptions early on, concerning the other two main characters. So she gives you enough to maybe build on in your mind of what they may look like. But with Seth? For some reason, she kept this slate completely blank. Through the entire novel there was nothing given about what color his eyes are, his hair, facial features, nothing. So this unfortunately, bugged me alot. That's why I couldn't give the 5 stars I wanted to. I'm a details kinda girl, and I just never encountered this sort of non-description of a character in such a descriptive, emotional, & poignant story before. Especially when the character in question, is one of the main focal points of the story. Majority of this book is in his POV.
Moving On
Now, this book I must say is one of the very few BDSM theme novels that truly hits home with me. It hit on just about all points that I look for, when I read a story like this. This is not your typical BDSM trope. Instant Gratification novel. So if that's what you're expecting/hoping for, don't look here.
The story surrounding Kaden, Seth, & Leah is nothing short of incredible to me. The relationship dynamics that you see unfold & play out here, will rip you apart & put you back together again. Stronger. More self aware, somehow. It's hard cos I really can't explain it without sounding too sappy or giving something away to those who have yet to read this. I feel like the journey here needs to be experienced first hand, for you to truly get it & come to your own conclusion of how you may feel about it.
I will say this though.. if you ever doubt what an unselfish, unwavering, & unconditional love looks like, look here. The very definition of these things are here in it's pages. The layers & levels in which you experience these things, with all 3 characters, are just raw in many respects. Beautiful in all of them, even the hard VERY hard, moments. I cannot stress through any eloquent words just how deep, on so many levels, that this story truly touched me. And Kaden has just left me in a state of...

If you read only one novel out of this series, nay, out of this genre, I strongly suggest you read this one.

I can’t even this book, it will break your heart and put it back together just in a different way.
I am no stranger to Tymber’s work and this is probably my second favorite book I have ever read/ listened by her. This was the first Audio book by her and I loved it.
You will need tissue this story between Kaden, Seth, and Leah is powerful and heartbreaking.
What would you do if your best friend in the entire world told you he was dying and he need you to fill his shoes so to speak for his wife because her needs are unique?
Not only do you fall in love with Kaden, Leah but you fall in love with Kaden, Seth and Seth, Leah but you also fall in love with the 3 of them as a couple. It’s a beautiful story of love and loss and finding love again.
Usually I say quotes I love but I am going to say quotes I loved to hated because they were just too powerful.

Feeling the struggle Seth goes through in this book breaks my heart. I know Leah and Kaden are going through a tough time too. But Seth for me it was more so that he had to come to terms with the end game, and change his life and way of thinking all at the same time.

Wow , I am emotionally drained from this book , this was way beyond 5 stars for me more like a 10 no doubt . I was not expecting the ride I was just on and let me tell you I cried like a blubbering idiot , to the point I had to stop reading for 10 mins to pull myself back together . this book made me feel like I lost a Best friend ... And that sucked , but I LOVED this book so much. It was full of Love, Courage, sorrow,friendship and BDSM. it will definitely be added to my read again list . I LOVED Seth for stepping up and giving up his own life to handle a request from his best friend and follow through with it even though at times he did not want to .
I truly felt Leah's Pain When the end came I felt like I had lost my best friend as much as she felt the loss of her husband .
