Learning English on my own. Text + audio. This was just an okay reading. Even though it's for intermediate students, the 9 short stories were retold with easy texts. I think that this was an introduction to M. R. James' work for me. This is the third time that I had read this book, but now I paid more attention than I did before.

At first, I thought it was based on just one story, but it turned out to be a collection of several tales. Despite my initial disappointment, it was still an enjoyable read. Don't expect too much—it's a short and easy read, only a few pages long.

The feel of a Gothic novel was definitely present in this book. The author had a good understanding of how to create the atmosphere for a horror story. I thoroughly enjoyed the author's writing style and storytelling. Overall, all the stories were very good and I enjoyed reading them.

It was a fast read, interesting book with several stories, I’m sure it was scary back then, but now it’s not scary, but more like the type you will remember for a long time.
