Six months after meeting at the Taste of Chicago, Lil Lampert and Grier Dilorio are living together. Their physical bond glows brighter than ever, but the couple soon realizes that it takes more than three magic words and outstanding sex to make a partnership work.
Like any fledgling, Grier is learning how to navigate his new life. His problems should have ended when Jillian signed the papers acknowledging him as Luca's biological father and he got the opportunity to pursue a career in interior design. Instead, he's hampered by old fears and bad habits that are hard to let go.
Adjusting to a small apartment in a four-season state-with a much younger man sporting a stubborn streak-is a challenge for Lil. His position as Luca's "Daddio" is a delicate balancing act between doing what he thinks is right and deferring to Grier's eight years of experience.
Life is stressed enough, but now Lil and Grier also face an unexpected complication from a powerful, far-reaching ruling body. Suddenly Luca's safety-and their happiness as an emerging family-depends on Lil's keen understanding of human nature and Grier's willingness to learn.
MICKIE B. ASHLING is the pseudonym of a multi-published author who resides in a suburb outside Chicago. She is a product of her upbringing in various cultures, having lived in Japan, the Philippines, Spain, and the Middle East. Fluent in three languages, she’s a citizen of the world and an interesting mixture of East and West.
Since 2009, Mickie has written several dozen novels in the LGBTQ+ genre—which have been translated into French, Italian, Spanish, and German. A lot of her backlist is “Under Construction” as she slowly transitions from traditional publishing to representing herself. Her goal is to have most of her novels back in the universe by the end of 2023.
Daddio pretty much picked up where Taste left off. Lil and Grier are living together in Chicago and Lil is hating he weather. Grier and Jillian have joint custody of Luca which causes all kinds of problems due to Ali and Jillian's attitude toward Lil and Grier as a couple. Lil and Grier have their own issues to settle as do any new couple sharing their lives. Luca begins to get bullied in school when Grier and Lil are outed because of Jillian and the catholic school begins to feed Luca all kinds of bigotry. I really enjoyed this book on many levels. Lil is just terrific in his love for Luca and his adoration of Grier. It was nice to see Grier mature as a man with Lil's gentle guidance. The story basically expanded the dynamic between Lil and Grier by throwing Luca into the mix. The shared custody of Luca with Jillian and Ari added a nice complication to Grier and Lil's relationship. The reconciliation between the two couples happened a little too fast for it to feel real. I admired the way that Ms Ashling handled the social issues of bullying, religious dogma and homophobia in this story with Lil being the voice of reason. It was nice to see Jody and Clark playing bigger roles also. Where the first two books were emotionally driven, this perfect wrap up to the series was much more character driven. It read quickly and easily and it seems that Ms Ashling has found her groove as far as her writing style goes. I recommend this well written continuation to anyone who enjoyed Taste.
Disappointing. The whole book was kind of boring to me and I thought it got a little too preachy and unrealistic. This should also come with a heavy kink warning.
I'm torn between 2 and 4 stars. Some parts of the book are good, good to read, good to follow and understand and I really liked that we got to see Clark and Jody again - and a bit more.
But....maybe life is that way but books normally are different...it's like this book wasn't sure what to be...hot sex, nasty mom making trouble, gay bashing, caring parents...duh..everything tumbled through the book and I really lost my connection to all the characters. By squeezing two couples, one big conflict and some minor conflicts together, the books got cramped.
I think the next time the author writes a sequel to a book I like - I'm going to skip it. I still wished that I hadn't read "Vessel" because it totally ruined "Cutting Cords" for me.
Now - this time it's not that hard but still...Don't get me wrong, there are parts I liked but because I'm really torn I give 3 stars.
I make no secret of the fact that I love Mickie's books and her writing style so I was really looking forward to getting my hands on Daddio. Just finished it and I was not disappointed. I loved watching the development of Lil and Grier's relationship and I have been cheering them on as they learned to be together. I did not know what was going to happen with Jillian as I just felt that she wasn't going to go away but now, having finished the book, I am happy. I do not want to give anything away - but I am sure that I have - but anyone who has followed this couple will not be disappointed. I'm off to read the trilogy from the start now so that I can savour the whole story.
Very good m/m romance that picks up six months after the second book as Lil and Grier settle into their relationship - Lil learning to parent, Grier working to control his anger, and both of them learning to communicate and compromise. Jody and Clark are back, too! Plus there's plenty of smutty goodness to go around. :)
3.5 stars. I liked the previous book better. The niggle was not in the writing or characters- it all was pretty true to form from the previous book. I can't exactly put my finger on what about it I didn't love other than the fact that nothing really dramatic happened. It just felt like an extension of the last book so it was just a step up from meh for me.
While I did enjoy it and liked to read more about these guys, this was my least favorite of the Horizons books. Don't know why, but I just didn't connect with it that much. Still an enjoyable read though.
This review was originally published on my blog Joyfully Jay
Lil Lampert and Grier Dilorio have been together about six months now. Lil has moved from his bachelor life in San Francisco into a small apartment in Chicago with Grier and his son Luca. The guys are still adjusting to their new lives together and things aren’t completely smooth sailing. Lil is used to having money and spending it on what he wants, but Grier is not comfortable having Lil pay more than half of the expenses. As a result, the guys struggle when Lil wants to move into a larger place (and pay the bulk of the costs), as well as spend money on Grier and Luca. And the men still have a lot of tension with Luca’s mother, Jillian, and both her need for total control over Luca, as well as her lack of acceptance of Lil and Grier’s relationship. Luca has adjustment issues as well as he deals with bullying and other difficulties at school from having two dads. But Lil and Grier are deeply in love and committed to making things work despite the challenges.
Daddio is the third book in Ashling’s Horizons series and this story follows closely on the previous story Taste, which introduces Lil and Grier. I read and enjoyed Taste, although (shockingly for me), I did not read the first book in the series, Horizons, that focuses on different main characters. I liked watching Lil and Grier get to know each other in their first story and how they dealt with the issues of a 12-year age gap, Grier having a son, and Grier’s complicated relationship with Jillian. I am also a fan of a good underwear kink and Grier’s taste for lace is a exciting theme in the first story. So when I saw that there was a sequel for these guys (and the underwear kink was proudly displayed on the cover) I picked it up.
I enjoyed reconnecting with Grier and Luca and they continue to be a hot couple. I really liked seeing how much of a family unit they have become and how quickly Lil has become a father to Luca. I also enjoyed the scenes with Clark and Jody, MCs from Horizons, who play a bigger role in this story than they do in the second. I think fans of their book will be pleased with the amount of page time they get and a peek into how their relationship has developed (as well as how hot they are together).
But there were some things that just didn’t work for me as well here. First off, I am not sure there was enough happening here to pull off its own story. The book felt more like a chance to check back in with the characters than a stand alone story and I needed a bit more from the plot. I was also a little frustrated that things felt so negative between the guys and that in many cases I thought they behaved badly towards each other. As the story opens, Lil is frustrated by the small apartment and the frequent arguments about money. We jump right into this almost immediately, which was a bit surprising, without much set up about the positive end of their new relationship. It is clear that this is a recurring fight the guys are having and Lil is grumbly about giving up his space and Grier’s refusal to take his money. But then it is resolved when Lil just decides to hire a realtor and to rent a new house before Grier even agrees. In fact, Grier has specifically said no, but Lil just steamrolls ahead and decides he will convince Lil later. This kind of disregard for other people’s wishes seems to happen often throughout the book. When Jillian disagrees with Grier’s interest in signing Luca up for football, he just goes ahead and does it, including getting Luca all excited about it, without her permission. Again, he knows her objections and he just says he’ll convince her. This was just such a strange recurring issue that happens among so many of the characters. It just felt so oddly disrespectful and no one ever seems to accept that it is wrong (nor does the book suggest that there is anything wrong with their behavior).
The relationship between Grier, Jillian, and Lil continues to be a struggle in this story. I was surprised that we don’t get much recap of the conflict from the first book since it is hard to understand just why things are so contentious between them all. For most of this book, the guys alternate between trying to pacify her (in Lil’s case through money) and being totally fed up with her and calling her nasty names. I think more backstory here would have helped make Jillian less one dimensional, as we know from Taste that despite her frequent nastiness, she does care deeply for Luca. I would have liked to see that come out a bit earlier in the story and not make her such a flat nasty bitch for most of the book. Or at least to provide a better understanding to new readers why she behaves the way she does.
There were other small things that felt a little rocky. I noticed some inconsistencies in the guys words versus their behavior. Grier is very concerned about money and doesn’t want Lil spending on him, yet he dresses in La Perla underwear that Lil buys and barely flinches as it gets ripped off. Do you know how expensive La Perla is? The cheapest underwear on their web site is $42 and it goes up to over $150 a pair. We are told Grier’s fears about money are causing major problems between them but then this is a non issue. Or early in the book Grier comments how important it is to keep their sex life away from Luca for fear family court will restrict their rights. Then he is giving Lil a blow job behind an unlocked door 30 seconds after Luca has just barged in on them. I also thought it odd how much time the book spends extolling the virtues of Pop Warner football. I get it is to support Grier’s desire to see Luca play football versus soccer, but at times it felt like an advertisement for the organization with multiple long passage devoted to why Pop Warner is so wonderful. I think a lot of these issues would have made less of an impact on me if the story was stronger plot-wise, but because there wasn’t a ton happening here, I think it made these problem areas more apparent.
Overall I was mixed on this book. I think if you are fans of the first two books in this series you will enjoy seeing all these guys again and catching up with their relationships. The book gives you a nice sense of how things have developed with Jody and Clark and where they are going for Lil and Grier. I liked that they show both the development of Lil and Grier’s relationship with each other, as well as their closeness as a family to Luca. But despite the positives, not everything totally came together for me on this one.
Consiglio
Luca makes this book so much better. I love that little guy. I was a bit flabbergasted by Jillian's sudden turn around. It was hard to believe it was genuine after the crap she kept putting Grier through. But these two guys are hot together!
Daddio by Mickie B Ashling takes up where Taste, book two of the Horizon series ended. It's six month later, and architect Lil Lampert and wannabe interior designer, Grier Dilorio are living in Chicago and trying to make their life together work. This is an entertaining and delightful read. Lil and Grier are a sweet couple and some of the scenes between them are steamy hot.
In Daddio, Ashling addresses the mechanics of making a loving relationship work. How does a couple deal with the daily crises that come up in the course of joining one life to another? How do you keep the passion burning under the onslaught of daily routine?
It has only been six months since Lil and Grier met, so they are still working out the kinks of their relationship. Ashling is genuine in her relationship-building. Watching Lil and Grier come to terms with the obstacles facing them in Chicago is great fun. These are two very fine guys. Grier is the bad boy with the tattoos, leather and jeans, while Lil is a California sophisticate with the penchant for fine clothes and sleek cars. Seeing them interact with each other as they confront the issues that a gay couple raising a young child faces is heartening.
Grier's young son, Luca is an engaging secondary character. He has good insights for a boy so young and precocious. Luca serves as a foil in some of the tense moments in Daddio, particularly between his two sets of parents. Daddio focuses on the family-life of Lil, Grier and Luca. At the same time Ashling is forging ties between Lil and Grier, she reintroduces Clark and Jody, the main characters from Horizon and their efforts to keep their sexual relationship fresh. Clark and Jody have been together for five years. While they love each other and share a commitment, their love life is suffering. The inspired bedroom antics Clark and Jody get involved in-- with some prompting from Grier and Lil-- are fun and sexy.
Ashling is not afraid of confronting important issues. In Daddio, the main characters run head-on into religious opposition to homosexuality. While this issue could have overwhelmed Daddio, Grier and Lil deal with the situation with honesty, some righteous anger and even humor, the same way they deal with other troubling situations that arise in their life.
I like Ashling's writing style and her focus on character building and plot. Daddio, like her other novels, is not a series of sex scenes loosely connected by a skeletal plot. There's some thought behind the story and some understanding of what makes an entertaining tale. I loved Taste, and Daddio is a nice continuation of the Horizon series.
Main Characters: Grier Dilorio and Lil Lampert Key Themes: Men with Children, Social & Age Differences, Established Couples Location: Chicago & The Caribbean
Grier and Lil are now living together and sharing custody of Luca with Grier’s ex!
This story is mainly about the challenges facing this sexually adventurous, financially unequal couple. They argue about a lot things; money, parenting, aging and sex.
I did not like either MCs - they both have a tendency to over-react (which kind of got on my nerves after a while), and then there's Grier's irrational reactions of Lil's wealth, and Lil's unpredictable behavior towards Jillian, Luca's mother…..
Having said that, I thought Luca was adorable, and the sex is definitely not run of the mill!
Okay, I love when stories include safe sex and sexpos messages, but this one flipped into lecture mode way too many times for me. Also . I'm aware that I'm jumping into the middle of a series (accidentally), so I'm willing to cut some slack on the second thing because that I'm not aware of. But conversations segued from casual to lecture-y, which does happen periodically if you're sexpos and your friends are looking for advice. But it KEPT happening. It may just be a writing style that doesn't float my boat. That said, it was still a good story overall, I liked a number of the plot elements and the sexpos nature of it. I'd recommend with some reservations, depending on who I'm talking to.
I really enjoyed this book. The one problem I had with this book is that it simply wasn't long enough. As much as I have enjoyed this authors books, I have a problem with how abruptly she ends her books. I feel like this story is unfinished.
The characters in this series are so great. You feel like you are reading about them you are visiting with old friends. I was just so comfortable with them.
I really hope the author is planning on another book because I am not ready to say goodbye to these characters.
This was an okay read for me. I love the main characters but I think maybe the author tried to put to much into this book, to many issues to try and wade through and it kind of lost its way. I just lost the connection for the characters trying to keep track of what the book wanted to be. It was a little preachy on some issues and felt repetitive throughout. This is my least favorite book so far in the series.
Grier & Lil have their own little section in my heart! These two are so adorable and waaay sexy all wrapped up into one. I was worried that I wouldn't get to see them in the same way we did in taste but I was totally wrong. We get some voyeuristic play, lacey under-things, pole dancing...hot tub lovins! Damn...this books has it ALL!
Ok the contrast between arguing over money and the kid and the sex kinks was just really strange. And it seemed to me like the issues over the kid were not resolved, just a hint that they would be in future.
Totally could have done without the last chapter and had more on the resolution for the kid.
Not nearly as entertaining as Taste maybe because the chase is done. But still a fun sequel read following up on Lil and Grier's lives as they deal with raising a child and making things work.
