Ki ne vágyna rá, hogy esténként, mikor elalszik, egy beszélő farkaskölyök szegődjön mellé álmában, és elkísérje kalandozásaiban? Az Álomfogó hőse, Gergő viszont egyáltalán nem kívánja a farkaskölyök társaságát, mint ahogy azt se, hogy az általa csak Bolhásnak becézett segítőjével együtt vágjon keresztül az álmok néha mulatságos, máskor fenyegető erdején.

Gergő családja váratlanul meghívót kap a Vajákosok, Táltosok, Énekmondók, Sámánok és Egyéb Révülők Találkozójára. A bűbájosok a Börzsönyben tartott összejövetelét azonban több dolog is fenyegeti: Monyákos Tuba, az illegalitásba szorult lidérc gerillák vezetője társaival együtt azon munkálkodik, hogy minél több borsot törjön a rendezvény résztvevőinek orra alá. Kobzos Béla, a környék fővadásza, elmaradhatatlan kísérőjével, Furdancs Pepével együtt észreveszi, hogy valami nincs rendben az utóbbi időben, és úgy dönt, végére jár a dolognak, holott a bűbájosok világának rejtve kell maradnia a hétköznapi emberek előtt.

Ráadásul a találkozón az éjfekete varázslónő, Holló egymás után álomfogságba ejti a Heteket, akik féken tartják a Sárkányt, így őrizve a világ egyensúlyát. Holló uralkodni akar az álmokon és a való világban egyaránt. Egyedül Gergő állíthatná meg, ő azonban nem hisz a bűbájban és az álmok világában. A varázslónő el akarja pusztítani a fiút, mielőtt az ráébred ki ő, és milyen hatalom van a kezében.

Rémálmai mindenkinek vannak, és az álom a mindennapok tükörképe. Gergő bárhogy kapálódzik ellene, rádöbben, hogy a nehézségek elől nem lehet kitérni. Szembe kell néznünk velük, ha azt akarjuk, hogy ne gyötörjenek. Nem mi választjuk meg, mikor mivel találkozunk, azonban egyedül rajtunk áll, hogyan érezzük magunkat a bőrünkben. Az Álomfogó színes, kavargó világba repíti olvasóját, de hétköznapi gondjainkra ad választ.

About the author

He was a Hungarian author and journalist. He wrote the "Gergő-series". In 2002 he became known by his book "Gergő és az álomfogók" [Gergő and the Dreamcatchers]. In 2003 the second volume of this series became in Hungary the "Book of the Year". In this year he also got the IBBY award in the category for the "Best Children's Book of the Year". In 2007 he got the "József Attila-prize" and he recieved the special prize of the chairman of Bács-Kiskun county.

It is one of the recommended reads for my daughter, and I started to read it to help her.

Well, we put it aside for now, and going to pick something else. It’s a pretty difficult read for her: too complicated storylines, too many characters (15 characters in the first three chapters!).

It seems interesting though, so I’m sure it is worth another try.

Gergő is a magical book, I can only compare it to my all time favorite, Harry Potter, which is funny because the English magician and his two friend make an appearance in this book.

The book is about a young boy from Csipetke Street, who doesn't believe in nonsense. He plays video games, hangs out with friends just like any an avarage teenager, however he has a recurring problem, he is riddled with nightmares and can't sleep. Unbeknownst to him this is about to change. This year the taltoses, shamans, wizards and witches will hold their yearly gathering in the Owl Beech Valley, and they send an invitation to Gergo and his family to attend. While Gergo thinks magic is nothing but tricks and quackery her mother, Bogi, believes in supernatural, so the family sets out to a new adventure. They are accompanied by Bogi's new husband and her daughter, Zsófi, Bogi's best friend the entirely city girl Appollonia also tags along. All the while, the vicious and mysterious Crow attacks the Seven, the spiritual leaders of the magical world, and tries to let the Dragon lose. Gergo alone has the power to stop him/her, through this quest Gergo will not only discover the world of magic, but ultimately gets to know himself better.

This is a children's book for I younger audiences so I wasn't the main target group, being 26. It tells you a lot about the book that I could still enjoy it. The world is full of interesting wonders, colorful creatures and mind-blowing magic. The characters are sufficiently built up, while their motivations are sometimes lacking in depth, this could be expected from a fairy tale. The book is also full of moral stories that are both educational and beautiful, I truly believe that any child could benefit from them. The overarching metaphor of the book is moving, it tries to show us how a young boy can cope with the loss of a parent.

I would recommend this to any adult with a young heart or any parent that want something for their child that would both educate and immerse him/her, and of course for any child that want to read something magical.

Kívánom, hogy legyen egy újabb, korrektúrával ellátott kiadása, de újraolvasva a lányomnak eszembe juttatta, hogy így is mennyire meghatározott volt az én világképemnek, hogy gyerekként elolvastam.
