ON THE PROWL Of course, marrying an alpha male like Nic comes with its share of danger. As leader of his Streak and head of a global corporation, Nic and his new fiancée must take their places in the jungles of Manhattan—and the local Others seem to have a strict “no pets” policy. In fact, the Council seems to think the Tiguri are at the root of all their problems, including an attempt on the life of its leader.
If Nic hopes to protect his name and his mate, it’s hunt or be hunted—and he can’t do it alone. But if anyone can bring out the beast in him, it’s the sexy, savage tigress he’s sworn to love…
Born and raised in coastal New England, Christine Warren lived in the South and the Mid-Atlantic before hopping to the other side of the country to take up the life of a transplant in the Pacific Northwest. She completely bypassed those states in the middle due to her landlocking phobia. Hmm, need to research a scientific term for that...
When not scrambling frantically to complete her latest writing project, Christine spends most of her time as a crazy animal lady, hanging out with her dog Levi (he’s the one with the hair) and pretending to train him to have some manners. She also hangs out with her horse, Cal—a thoroughbred with a craving for strawberry licorice twists—her goddog, Merlin; and her best friend, fellow author Hannah Murray. In addition to playing with her pets, Christine’s hobbies include identifying dog breeds from photos of their underbellies, appreciating fine and not-so-fine wines, shopping for the perfect pair of Christian Louboutin shoes, and most of all reading things someone else had to agonize over.

The couple in this story are in an arranged engagement/marriage that their parents set up to merge their businesses and pure tiger bloodlines. Saskia was groomed to be the perfect hostess and wife. Nic is the new tiger alpha and CEO of the family companies. They haven't seen each other in 18 years and are now engaged and expected to produce some babies asap.
Nic goes into this expecting his life to be the same, minus a wife at home waiting on him. He's a complete asshole at first and tries to dictate everything to Saskia while giving nothing in return. Example, he leaves in the middle of the night without telling her where he's going and doesn't get why she's mad about that because he's the man and does what he wants. That mentality doesn't work well for Saskia and she flips out on him. I was happy she didn't put up with his nonsense and wished she'd been more violent. It was nice to see them working it out like adults and compromising.
I liked the couple, but I think I liked the mini mystery more. The who attacked Rafe and was setting up Nic mystery was a nice addition to the story.
The characters from the previous books also make appearances.
On the Prowl is the first I’ve ever read of Christine Warren. I believe this is her thirteenth “Others” book but after doing some investigating and talking to people who are familiar with her books, this one is more of a stand alone. It introduces us to the world of The Tiguri, or tiger shifters. What initially drew me to this book is an arranged marriage. I love it when the hero and heroine are forced to marry early in a book. I can usually find this trope in historicals, but I was happy to see it in a paranormal romance.
Saskia and Nicolas come from traditional, old Tiguri families and it is very normal for the parents to arrange marriages to continue their clans. The tiger shifters have a low birth rate, and have grown somewhat sparse in recent years. Much depends on this marriage, not only for future children but the Tigers have decided to move into New York city, an area where other shifters have power. They are not necessarily welcome, although no one is outright hostile to them.
While Saskia and Nicholas knew each other when they were younger, they have not seen each other for many years. But they are thrown together after their engagement party. I really liked that these two aren’t really opposed to the marriage. They understand their customs and what is at stake and are willing to give it a go. What Saskia underestimates is just how alpha her new fiancé is.
Nicholas is over the top, borderline ass, extremely protective male. And I just ate it all up. I seriously couldn’t get enough of him. I’m sure he will turn some of you off. I mean – he really is an ass. And while Saskia definitely had her moments of giving it back to him, which made me cheer, she also understands her role of being the wife to this kind of male. She didn’t let him walk all over her, but she didn’t feel like she had to fight for complete independence either. Taking into consideration all of their traditions, their relationship made sense to me. Their engagement doesn’t become an official marriage until she is pregnant. There is a lot of “the female belongs pregnant in the kitchen” kind of deal in this book. Again, probably not for everyone. But I found it to be a very fun book.
Somehow, the press of their bodies together had transformed her from the cool, elegant stranger he’d become engaged to into a fierce, demanding tigress in heat. Thank God and everything holy. He sank back into their kiss, reveling in the way her body surrounded him, arms and legs clasping him close. He couldn’t wait to feel her sex clasping him, too. He wanted to sink his aching erection deep into the hot cavern at her center and feel them jointed together in one sweating, straining body of lust. He wanted to match their stripes until there was no way to tell where he ended and she began. He wanted her like his next breath. Did I mention this book is a little over the top? I can’t leave out an example of how Saskia gives it back to Nicholas after he acts like an ass-wipe:
“I. Cannot. Believe. You!” Jerking back, Nic stared at his mate, his eyebrows drawing together as he realized she might not be in complete agreement with him after all. In fact, judging by the look on her face, it occurred to him she might be about to take his gesture of goodwill and shove it up part of his anatomy he really preferred to keep to himself.
“You arrogant, selfish, egotistical, medieval, despotic, swollen-headed, dumb, idiot penis owner!” Leaping off her stool, Saskia clenched her hands into fists and drew them up in front of her torso as if she had already half-decided to take a swing at him.
A lot of times, their arguments end up naked in the bedroom, which for some reason I approved of.
Besides working out the kinks to their marriage, there is also an attack on the head of the shifter council, in which Nicholas gets framed for. This set-up was a little weak for me, but it did integrate well within the romance.
This book was a really fun way to spend a Saturday afternoon. If you like super alpha males, and lusty bedroom scenes, I think you will enjoy this one.
Brought together by their power-seeking families, Saskia Arcos and Nicolas Preda are now married, but won’t be considered fully mated until Saskia becomes pregnant with Nic’s cub. As fierce members of the Tiguri – the incredible shapeshifting weretiger community – they are put under the spotlight because of their status in the community and Nic’s place as CEO of one of the top corporations in Manhattan.
Saskia and Nicolas are an interesting couple, to say the least. Saskia is a woman who is used to having things taken care of for her. This makes her the perfect match for someone who enjoys control as much as Nicolas. I would say their dynamic is most similar to a Dom/sub relationship. Saskia shows signs of a submissive personality while Nicolas loves to give out orders and expects them to be followed through. Some would consider Nic to be a jerk, but for me, he didn’t come off as too demanding. He is a man who knows what he wants and I thought that Saskia stood up to him well.
I was very impressed by Warren’s writing style. I read this book in one sitting and I think that is a result of Warren’s incredible ability to write so freely and pace her work evenly. Warren also does a fantastic job of giving readers a chance to understand both sides of a scene from the hero and heroine. She does this often and thoroughly and I think that’s the number one reason why I enjoyed these characters so much. Nic can do or say something that is completely off-putting , but then readers get his POV of the scene and we understand how out of control he feels whenever he is around Saskia. He isn’t perfect at all, but he acknowledges his mistakes when he does make them.
While I feel that the emphasis was placed more so on the romance, there is also a pleasant suspense side plot with a crime that is pointing all the blame to Nic. I don’t think this aspect of the book was explored as much as I would have liked, however I did feel like it was resolved well.
For readers who liked a dominant alpha hero and enjoy reading smoking hot sex scenes, then this book will definitely be to your liking. As my first Christine Warren book that I have enjoyed, I can say that it won’t be my last if more of the Others are like Nic. He is definitely delicious. Come on, go on and take a bite!
Arranged marriages sound god awful. I have no idea what I would do if my parents tried to pull that on me.
However, that being said, it's a bit predictable for this thing to happen among shifters. Hence, why it happened. In On the Prowl, you will meet Saskia and Nic. They are both tiger shifters and their parents agreed on this engagement/marriage because they wanted to merge their businesses.
So it seems a bit realistic because I'm sure that's what people do in real life as well. Like the super rich people. Well, they haven't seen each other in a few years so I was wondering what everything was going to be like. First off, Nic was a complete asshole but I ended up liking him. Maybe it's because he meshed so well with my inner asshole. Who knows - I just liked him.
Then there's Saskia, who was okay. It's weird that she was groomed to be this "perfect" wife - so I didn't want to initially hate her but she definitely grew on me as well. Mostly because she has one hell of a backbone and didn't take his shit on day one. I loved that sassy fact about her. She definitely made this book a bit more lively - which kept me engaged.
Overall, it was an interesting audio to randomly dive into.
OK...here's the deal. I get in a rut sometimes, reading teen Paranormal Romance or just a plain good book and there's nothing naughty in it. I NEED naughty sometimes. So I pick an author that's very good at naughty. Enter: Christine Warren. I got hooked on this "Other" series when you could only get them through Ellora's Cave. And I bought alot of them! Now, they are available through Amazon, and I buy alot of them }:)
Heart wrenching beautiful Saskia Arcos is a Tiger shifter who has been raised with old fashioned values and willingly accepts an arranged marriage with Streak leader, hunky, handsome Nicolas Preda...a shifter Saskia has loved since the age of 8, when she first met him. Trying to come to terms with being mated to a very domineering alpha male has it's drawbacks. Add to that the Council of Others out to take down her mate as a suspect in the mauling of the council leader, a cat shifter, who dared to flirt with Saskia during her engagement party and the mystery needs to be solved so that Saskia and Nic can become the mated pair they were destined to become.
Of course I have a quote from this book...and you're going to love it: I'd rather spend my days mining for diamonds in a pile of horse shit.
Two powerful Tiguri (Tiger shifting) clans decide to strengthen their positions - and establish a Tiguri presence in the US - by combining forces via an arranged marriage. Nicolas Preda has it all planned in a very cerebral way of how he and his mate to be are going to rule their new domain, but he is unprepared for his viseral attraction to the elegant Saskia and how she threatens his tidy vision of the future. Saskia thought she was ready to do her duty and marry Nic, as a child she worshiped the teenaged Nic, but when Nic tries to go old school on her and thinks that he can treat her like a child and dictate the rules - she's going to remind him that a tigeress has claws...
After the first couple chapters - and a very promising setup - I was excited to find that Warren finally brought her 'A' game and that On The Prowl recapture all of the things I had liked in the earlier books of her Others: an intense steamy pairing, girl bonding over stupid male moments and appearances from many of my old favorite supporting Others - Graham, Missy and Rafe.
Both of the leads here are good - even though Nic has some neanderthal moments he's actually decent enough to know that he's blown it once his temper cools down and Saskia is a great example of winning through brains instead of kick-butty-ness - and together they are burn up the sheets combustible.
So I loved Warren's latest all new addition to her Others series and am hoping that she is in the groove for the oh-so-long awaited rewrite of Rafe's story - there's just a little bit of him here and I want it all.
I haven't read a Christine Warren novel for some time. I don't really know why, but with so many books and so many series I can't always keep up. I only got this book as I needed something starting with an O for a reading challenge. I must truly thank that challenge. This book was really good. When I first started, I liked that the story had a nice fast beginning. The story at first seemed to be nothing more than a nice, quick and fluffy read. Bit this book has a much more important message to tell. It shows the effects of bigotry and not being bothered to learn about the cultures and beliefs of others. Arranged marriage seems like madness to most, but this book made me think about this issue in a different way. If you read this as just a nice paranormal romance, or as a book with an important message, you will find this a great way to spend a couple of hours.
After a promising start this book swiftly headed from exciting to totally disappointing. It was readable and not that very boring but there was almost no plot and the one there was so predictable, I knew who the villains were from the start. There was no spark between the characters, who were uninspiring at best. Even the appearance of familiar characters couldn't make up for the lack of any new vitality added to an otherwise interesting world.
Saskia Arcos and Nicolas Preda are Tiguri, a rare and fierce race of tiger shifters. In accordance with the tradition of their people, Saskia and Nick enter into an arranged marriage. While both agree to the betrothal to unite their powerful families neither is sure of their compatibility - outside of the bedroom that is. To make matters worse, someone has attacked the leader of the Council of Others and Nick soon becomes the prime suspect. Will Saskia and Nick be able to overcome their differences and uncover the truth before war breaks out between the Tiguri and the Others?
Series note: While Saskia and Nick are completely new characters, the secondary cast consists of numerous characters from previous installments. Thus, it is recommended to read in order.
The concept of arranged marriages is anathema in a modern Western culture yet Warren somehow manages to provide a logical, if somewhat clichéd , explanation. Nick and Saskia themselves get off on the wrong foot primarily due to Nick's overbearing arrogance and borderline misogyny. Nevertheless, the romance ultimately works once Saskia grows a backbone and Nick realizes that his attitude and actions will result in his losing his mate.
The mystery revolving around the attack on Rafe De Santos, is the strongest aspect of the story even though it is rather easy to guess the villain and the motive. The inclusion of couples from previous books is another highlight, and the snack-talk between the men is particularly entertaining.
In sum, despite the rocky start, this is a satisfying addition to the series overall and Kate Reading's narration of the audiobook is brilliant.
Bookswagger Marcia: Four crowns. I have been following this series since I discovered Walk on the Wild Side in my local Wally World. I am officially hooked. One thing about the Other series I enjoy is you do not have to read the entire series, nor do you have to read them in order to comprehend or enjoy any book in the series. I jumped into the series and read them out of turn and was very comfortable. On the Prowl was funny, sexy and surprising. I loved alpha Nicolas, I loved seeing him so confused by his feelings for his arranged bride Saskia. Marriage to his arranged bride was not what he expected. His character handled it like a grown tiger for the most part, not bemoaning issues or dragging things out in an effort to create conflict. Nicolas acted like the head of a clan bull-headed, stubborn but willing to compromise. Even he was surprised at some of the choices he made when it came to his mate but a man in love rarely follows a logical path.
Saskia is another one of those characters based off real women that make you say jeez and you think you are not going to like, just like Ava in Your So Vein. You will definitely root for her, to train her man on how to treat his alpha mate.
For fans that follow the series we get to see some of the ladies and the men we fell in love with from previous books. Although they give poor Nicolas a hard time accusing him of crimes he did not commit. Fans will not regret peeking in on the others in On The Prowl.
Bookswagger Danielle: Three crowns. I would say this was a light paranormal/ urban fantasy book. Readers that are new to the series like me can rest easy because you will be able to follow along easily. While there are a lot of characters, they do not detract from the story they enhance it. In fact a secondary character was my favorite, reporter Corinne. I really liked her because she was outspoken, honest and loyal.
I had a love hate relationship with Saskia and Nicolas. At certain points I absolutely loved them and others times I wanted to smack them. This tells me the author did a wonderful job humanizing the characters and making them relatable. During what I call their, me Tarzan you Jane argument I wanted to smack Nicolas for his backward thinking and applaud Saskia for getting mad and sticking up for herself. However, I did want to smack her for telling Corinne that she called her over to talk about the argument because she wasn’t supposed to leaving the apartment. My inner feminist screamed with that statement.
I love Christine Warren's book ever since I read 'Wolf at the Door'. And I love her world of the Others. I especially love it when Rafe and Graham is in the story (which I have to admit, it's always). But one thing I don't like about Warren's story... is the time line. It just confuses me. I've been following her even before some of the titles were changed (Fantasy Fix, Fur Factor, Fighting Faer, and Fur For All). And reading this, I was surprised that the time line went back in time again before the unveiling. I know she had to do it to published Rafe's story. But it's just that for someone who has read Rafe's book, and even stories after the Unveiling this just confuses the heck out of me. I still like to read my story in coherent order, especially when the story has a lot of characters. But despite all that I still like her world. And I love that this time it's a tiger shifter! I like Saskia's personality, and I think Nic is a really good match. I like their sense of balance and how each handled their arranged marriage. I agree with Saskia's view of "Why must everyone be against an arranged marriage?". I mean I believe not all arranged marriage will turn out bad. Even the plot is acceptable. But when reading this one, I couldn't get the same feeling that I had when reading some of Warren's earlier books. There was just something missing and I couldn't point it to what. Hopefully Rafe's published story will bring it back on track and I can't wait to see Tess again :)
More of a 3.5. Hmmm... my first introduction to Nicolas was not favorable - on their engagement night, he's called out in the middle of nookie for the Spanish Inquisition and instead of telling the h even a bit of what was going on, he says (and I quote) "I don't have time for you."
Many shovels full of manure later, he's dug quite a hole. Of course, we as the reader are privy to his thoughts *after* he's uttered some lame-assed testosterone-laden edict (that had me glaring at the pages and thinking "oh no you didn't!". Let's just say what he thinks and what he says are two different things - at least until she calls a truce and suggests starting over.
So what kept it from rating higher was this: there's a conspiracy and yet, much of the time spent with H/h seemed to be well... frankly I don't know what happened on the pages. I know the basic plot was in the background but there seemed to be a whole lot of nothing going on in the foreground - at least until near the end when lightbulbs start going off, someone notes something that raises suspicion that it might not even be a male, the h proves it ain't her, and then... yeah. So I read the book and I have no earthly idea what happened outside of sex and someone trying to kill the head of the council - at least for much of the book.
I have not read a Christine Warren book in quite some time and just recently picked up the "original"versions of this series. What to say? This book was great ,loved the storyline of arranged marriages and this one did the trope justice.Nicolas Preda and Saskia aka Sassy Arcos are two Tiguri who were contracted to marry when she was 8 and he 19.She falls in love with him at this young age and Nic is just Nic.I enjoyed both characters, even though Saskia has a submissive personality, she has a very strong backbone and stands up very nicely for herself.Nic on the other hand is all old worlde old fasioned when it comes to his mate. The action starts on their "wedding"night when they are interupted during lovemaking and Nic is accused of attempting to kill Rafe who is the head of the Other council. This book introduced some of the old characters in prior books and was happy to see them.Missy still has not had that baby and Grahamn is as possesive as always when it comes to his mate.I really felt for Nic when he found out who had set him up .All in all a grat addition to the series and happily awaiting the rewrite of Rafe's story.Lovely book and will be doing a reread soon as I basically ran right thru this book.
This book is set in the time frame of the original stories but wasn't part of those stories, so it isn't a re-write. This story is about tiger shifters or Tiguri. Nicolas Preda and Saskia Arcos have become engaged to bring two of the most powerful families Tiguri families together. Nicolas has moved his businesses main office to New York because that is where so much business is now conducted. He has is whole life planned out and thinks that Fate is just going to go along with his plans. He is so wrong about that. Saskia may have been raised in the traditions of her people but she isn't going to be some meek little mate that never knows what is going on with her family and her mate. These two are very intriguing because the love their families and traditions but they both want to bring the 20th century into their world. There are appearances by old faces; Missy who is now very pregnant with her first child, Graham, Dimtri and Reggie, Corrine, Mac and of course the ever charming Rafael De Santos. There is more history in the story about the Others and their prejudices. This is a good addition to the over all story. It is written in a time before Rafael has found Tess. I think fans of the other stories will enjoy this one very much.

Good book with combination of romance, suspense and action. I was REALLY wanting to smack Nic in the first 3 chapters for being such a controlling jerk, but I quickly found myself looking forward to seeing what the idiot would say to get himself in trouble next. Thankfully, Sassy did not tolerate his nonsense. I don't think I would have enjoyed the book at all if she would have been passive or a pushover. The next book is Rafe's story which has me over the moon excited. I have found Corrine annoying and whiny in the previous books, but she came through in this one and proved herself a mature and true friend. I was pissed at Graham and Dmitri briefly during the book, but seriously, what girl can hold a grudge against them for long??? Have I mentioned that the next book is Rafe's story???:)))
Saskia and Nic - Actually this one was one of my favorites to date. On first appearance Saskia gives the impression of a very compliant woman, what with accepting an arranged marriage and all. But that's only on the surface. Once you get down to it, while she's willing to compromise, apologize if she needs to, let past insults go, and in general follow her husband's guidelines - When it comes to something she feels strongly about, she won't let it slide, or compromise herself. As Corinne suggested, Sass picks her battles.
I also have to give credit to Nic for understanding that pushing her past the lines she's drawn would break something important in her. And in recognizing that something when it really wasn't what he thought he wanted. All in all, one of the better Other novels.
Oh how I love Christine Warren's books. In this installment she pulled all types of emotions out of me. The story centers around Nic and Saskia(Sassy) who are embarking on an arranged marriage. That along with Nic's chauvinistic attitude had my hackles raised. This is where Christine Warren's writing ability comes into play. She had me totally disliking Nic (because of his superior attitude) and Saskia (because of thought she was going to be a door mat). Well, mid way through the story I did a total 360. I fell in love with Nic and Saskia. Nic is definitely the epitome of Alpha male but Saskia is just as strong.
I usually walk away from Christine Warren's books feeling really good and ready to read another one. This time was no different.
Well i was between series when i picked this book up, and honestly didn't realize it was the 6th book in a series, normally i do some research on the books i read so i at least get them and read them in order.
That in mind, not a bad book, had both a gorgeous woman and one hunk of a man, both having great personality, great character development, very sensual sex scenes, not too dirty but at the same time just enough to make it sound delicious.
My only qualm about this book is the narration, at times it seemed to confuse me with the his and her personal narration, now my confusion could be because i'm a guy....but i don't like blaming everything on that.
I enjoyed this. The Tiguri are weretigers, and don't associate with the rest of the Others, so it was a whole new group to learn about.
Saskia Arcos and Nicolas Preda have an arranged marriage, as is typical among Tiguri, and Saskia has been raised to be exactly the kind of woman Nic needs by his side. She might not have be willing to go through with it, except she fell in love with the older Nic when she was only eight years old and hasn't fallen out of love.
When he thinks he's going to lay down the law about their marriage is going to be, she has to set him straight. But when Rafe, the head of the Council of Others, is attacked and the council is sure the Tiguri are responsible, Saskia defends her mate and gets involved with the politics.

Another pre-Unveiling story. The tigers have come to New York and the locals are not happy. Especially when the Head of the Council of Others, Rafe is attacked. Apparently the Tiguri have never played nice with the other Others and so suspicions naturally fell on Nic, the head of the streak and it is up to Sass, his new mate, to find out who the real culprit is.
The plot to attack Rafe turned out to be very convoluted and the relationship between Nic and Sass was very interesting to read. Though fairly traditional and seemingly submissive, I liked how Sass stood up to Nic because he was definitely an arrogant, stupid male in the beginning of their relationship.
The "6th" book in The Others series, this book introduces a new group of Others, the Tiguris. Nic and Saskia are a newly arranged, engaged couple whose families are interested in establishing themselves in America. The Council of Others, however, have some concerns with this more aggressive branch of the Others tree. When the leaders of the Council is viciously attacked, Nic becomes the obvious suspect. It is up to Saskia to help Nic prove his innocence and worthiness of acceptance.
I have to say I have read all of Ms. Warrens books from this series and have absolutely adored her writting style and what she has done with this world.. She is soooo descriptive that you can picture everything but not in a exagerated kinda way.. I was a little disappointed with the last 2 books and was hesitant to read this one...but I have to say she will definitely stay on my gotta have now new release list... This had everything the others had and then some.. the ALPHA male, the comradere between the other characters, a good plot, great love scenes..
On the Prowl introduces a new species of Others to this series. Tiguri mates Nic and Saskia are at the heart of a plot to start a war among the Others--right in the middle of their "betrothal" and mating. Oops. This story stands out because of the exploration of the interesting dynamics between the very alpha and traditional Nic and the very modern-but-traditional Sass. It was a quick read and enjoyable.
Lovely! Warren really does know what she is doing and I love it. There isn't many conflicts between the H/h which I am grateful of since I just can't endure another books with them fighting each other over silly things and misunderstandings. They support each other during hard times and they both make sacrifices in the relationship. But, the mystery part is too easy to guess so that's probably why it has loses its one star from me. Overall, GOOD! :D
I've read and enjoyed all of Christine Warren's books of The Others, but I have to say that On the Prowl stands out. Initially I wasn't sure if Saskia was going to end up in love with her tiger fiancé, Nicolas, or if Rafe de Santos was going to make another conquest. But once Saskia and Nic come together, there's no doubt. The sex in this book is hotter than anything Warren's written before, maybe because the tigers don't hold back. It's explosive and touched with a hint of violence that adds incredible intensity, and Warren writes it well.
Ok.. even though there were no were-bears (a personal preference of mine) this book was still pretty damned awesome. I love her whole series though. But this one.. this one really stuck out from the last few. It just seemed to be effortless.. beautiful story! Even though sometimes I wanted to smack Nic..
