80AD Book 3 finds Phoenix, Jade, Marcus and Brynn trapped inside a pyramid in ancient Egypt. No pharoahs here, this is Egypt as you've never see it. Rome has taken over and the country is far from peaceful.
This adventure is the most insane yet. It has everything you'd expect and more: mummies, secret passages, treasure, an evil high priest, human sacrifice, walking undead and more.
Together they must escape the clutches of the high priest of the Egyptian god, Set and release the imprisoned goddess of the Nile, Anuket.
Without Anuket, Egypt suffers endless drought and the country will die. An ancient prophecy predicts 'the Phoenix' to be the savior of Egypt, but our Phoenix doesn't think he's up for it.
To make matters worse, Phoenix and Jade's old enemy, Feng Zhudai, is manipulating the Roman leader of Egypt, weaselling his way into things, trying again to upset the balance of this world by causing chaos.
If they fail to release Anuket and the Nile, Feng Zhudai will win this round and trap them in Level 3 of the game forever.
Aiki lives in Brisbane, Australia, with her husband, (Ernest), teenage son (Leonidis - not their real names, obviously), aging dog and directionally-challenged fish. In between being a wife, running a business full-time and helping Leonidis with homework, she squeezes in a few hobbies, including: Martial arts, painting, writing, reading, bellydancing and playing three or four musical instruments. Occasionally she even sleeps. Very occasionally.
Brynn, Jade, Marcus and Phoenix are back in an all-new adventure in this installment of the 80AD series The Tekhen of Anuket! When they arrive in Egypt to break the Obelisk of Anuket to free the Goddess trapped inside, they must go through undead warriors, and a High Priest of the dead to complete their task before the dead of the moon arrives. Can they work together as a team and succeed before time runs out? Read and find out.
I enjoyed this book. It was a great third installment of the series and I can't wait to see what happens in the final two books of this YA adventure fantasy ebook series. Definitely check it out. You can get the whole ebook series for free on Smashwords.
This series continues to have me on the edge of my seat!! The growth of the characters along with the story itself is more than enough to make any lover of action and mystery books hooked.
This is the third in the series of fantasy books. Phoenix and Jade have been pulled into the fantasy world of 80AD, only to find that they have to complete the quest and defeat the bad guy, otherwise both the gameworld and their own world will be destroyed by Feng Zhudai. This tale sees the two characters, who are really only 13 years old, begin to grow more as people, realising that their actions, and their choices, can have far reaching effects. The theme of the levels so far is the restoration of balance and harmony, something which Phoenix realises matches their yin/yang amulets. The writing is smooth, although there are some teensy little editing errors - you're instead of your and a word missing here and there - but this far into the story, it isn't detracting. There are moments which made me laugh, such as when they sacrificed some grapes to summon Thor, so they could return his hammer - but you should have read the second book before this one to understand why they have Mjolnir in the first place! Definitely enjoying these, but they must be read in order, to firstly understand the story, and also to show the creation and development of the characters.
Level three of the series is set in Egypt, the group of hero's are set the task of freeing a trapped Goddess before time runs out and Egypt is plunged into a never ending drought.
The story is exciting and like the previous ones, there is a good balance of action and slower talking scenes that allow for character development.
The characters face even stronger foes this time including a powerful wizard and a host of undead soldiers. The avatars are stronger so they are can battle against them.
Phoenix character is very interesting in this book, he is slowly becoming controlled by his berserker sword and his friends are at as much of risk of his anger as his foes.
The computer game elements are still in the book, mostly to do with the main characters having a number of lives. In this book they use up a number of them, they also rise the interesting question of is it right to use up one of their lives to help 'save' them.
As the rest of the series is free on the Nook I will be reading them as well, even if they weren't free I would get them.
This series is improving by the book, it seems. The characters are learning, growing as people, and their adventures are exciting. It's hard to put these books down! Also, I've noticed that in books 2 and 3 of this series, the grammar and typographical issues that plagued the first book are no longer any problem. The books read extremely well!
I'm truly looking forward to the last two books in this series.
As a side note for those parents who might be considering these books for their children: These books read at a 4th or 5th grade reading level, or so, in their writing. The subject matter does deal with death, so if there are any young readers who have trouble handling that it might be wise to wait. Otherwise, I wholly recommend these books for young readers who are interested in fantasy and science fiction, or in historical fiction. This series has elements of all three of these genres. Good stuff!
Quite often as I read a book I try to imagine how Hollywood would portray it. While doing that with this book I actually became somewhat disturbed by the amount of violence, some of it much more graphic than I tend to care for. Having come to grips with this reality I then had to ask myself, will I make this book available to my students to read. After all they are only in 5th grade and I don't believe that they need to be exposed to an overabundance of "unnecessary" violence, blood, and gore. I have yet to get an answer to the question. I think that maybe what I'll have to do is read the remaining two books in the series and then decide. If they are as violent as this one was the answer will be "no." If not, then maybe, when examined in light of the entire series, I might be able to see things better.
This was better than the last two, but still not good enough to garner the coveted four star review. I definitely think Jade is officially my favorite character because she is the only one I can really relate to. I would like to see a bit more development of the characters as well as more descripton. The settings in this series are amazing, and description would be strongly appreciated because the author is basically looking at the every day life of the peasantry rather than the royals that so many focus upon.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I am a little upset that I fished it today. Most of the book was funny with a lot of witty humor. However, I must be honest there are parts of the book I had a hard time going through because I did not want these events to happen to our characters. However, in the end I enjoyed the witty humor and the laughs throughout the book. I recommend this book to everyone, you just need to read the first two book. You will not be able to complete understand everything if you skip.
This is a good continuation of the series. It doesn't feel like there's as much journeying going on in this volume compared to the first two, but the ending chapters more than make up for it. The main characters continue to learn more about themselves and each other, and the whole team is really starting to work well together (though there are still a few hiccups *cough*Blodbal*cough*). I'm really looking forward to the continued adventures of Phoenix, Jade, Marcus, and Brynn!
I got the first book in this series for free. I'm glad I did, or I might not have found this excellent series. I'd class it young adult, but that didn't make it any less enjoyable. This adventure finds Jade and Pheonix in ancient Egypt trying to free the Goddess Anuket.
Still devouring the series. I think the author needed to have someone proofread this one. I got a little distracted by the grammatical errors and missing punctuation. It never pays to rush something like this.
The adventure continues with each level getting harder. What unexpected things will happen in Egypt? An amazing blend of cultures awaits you. Great read.
the story develops well in the 3rd book. once you start reading its hard to stop. really worth a read. the characters develop a lot in this book. looking forward to the next one
