الأتراك والإنكليز والمغاربة في عصر الاستكشاف

كان المسلمون أكثر الأقوام غير المسيحية ممن صادفهم أبناء العصر الإليزابيثي حتَى بداية حكم آل ستوزت، وذلك عبر التجارة والقرصنة والعلاقات الدبلوماسية والصداقة والتزواج، ويقدم نبيل مطر في هذا الكتاب بالرجوع إلى مصادر لم تفحص سابقاً – كوثائق المحاكم ومذكرات الأسرى الإنكليز الذين عاشوا في المراكز التجارية من مراكش غرباً إلى مصر شرقاً- بحثاً جديداً مفصلاً عن العلاقات التي جمعت بين المجتمع الإنكليزي والمسلمين، ويبرز الدور الذي أدتَه التصورات الإنكليزية، التي شكلتها تلك العلاقات، في علاقة الإنكليز بالأمم التي كانت تعيش في العالم الجديد (أي في القارة الأمريكية). وقد بيَن مطر، في هذا الفحص الفريد للثالوت المشكّل من الإنكليز والمسلمين والهنود الأمريكيين، كيف أن الكتابات والممارسات الإنكليزية في عصر النهضة أرست أسس الإستعمار والمشاعر العرقيَة في العصر الحديث.
هذا وصف مفصّل لشبكة العلاقات التجارية والديلوماسية والعسكرية التي نشأت بين البريطانيين والمسلمين في القرنين السادس عشر والسابع عشر، وقد استفاد مطر من كنز من المصادر المتنوعة ليجعل هذا التاريخ نابضاّ بالحياة، بعيداّ عن العمومية، وسيصبح هذا الكتاب كتاباً واجب القراءة لكل من يهتم بأصل السعي للهيمنة، وما يتَضل بذلك من خطاب يتناول التجارة والإستعمار والإنتماء العرقي.

About the author

Nabil Matar studied English Literature at the American University of Beirut where he received his B.A. and M.A. In 1976, he completed his Ph.D. at Cambridge University on the poetry of Thomas Traherne. He taught at Jordan University and the American University of Beirut, and received postdoctoral grants from the British Council (Clare Hall, Cambridge University) and from Fulbright (Harvard Divinity School).

In 1986, Dr. Matar moved to the United States and started teaching in the Humanities Department at Florida Institute of Technology. In 1997, he became the Department Head and served until 2007 when he moved to the English Department at the University of Minnesota. He is Presidential Professor in the President’s Interdisciplinary Initiative on Arts and Humanities and teaches in the departments of English and History, and in the Religious Studies Program.

Dr. Matar’s research in the past two decades has focused on relations between early modern Britain, Western Europe, and the Islamic Mediterranean. He is author of numerous articles, chapters in books and encyclopedias, and the trilogy: Islam in Britain, 1558-1685 (Cambridge UP, 1998), Turks, Moors and Englishmen in the Age of Discovery (Columbia UP, 1999), and Britain and Barbary, 1589-1689 (UP of Florida, 2005). He wrote the introduction to Piracy, Slavery and Redemption (Columbia UP, 2001) and began a second trilogy on Arabs and Europeans in the early modern world: In the Lands of the Christians. (Routledge, 2003), Europe through Arab Eyes, 1578-1727 (Columbia UP, 2009). He is currently working on the third installment, "Arabs and Europeans, 1517-1798." With Professor Gerald MacLean, he published Britain and the Islamic World, 1558-1713 (Oxford UP, 2011). With Professor Judy Hayden, he edited a collection of essays on travel to the Holy Land in the early modern period (in press, Brill, 2012). His forthcoming publication is a study and an annotated edition of "Henry Stubbe and the Prophet Muhammad: The Originall & Progress of Mahometanism" (Columbia UP, 2012/13), He is completing work on "Names and Numbers: British Captives in North Africa, 1578-1727." In recognition of his "pioneering scholarship on the relationship between Islamic civilisation and early modern Europe," Dr. Matar was given the Building Bridges award at the University of Cambridge (28 March 2012).

يلقي هذا الكتاب الضوء على الوضع السياسي للعلاقة بين الإنجليز و المسلمين في عصر الاستكشاف، و يجيب بشكل غير مباشر نفس الإجابة على السؤال: لماذا تأخر استعمار العالم الإسلامي مقارنةً بالعالم الجديد و أفريقيا و آسيا
المصادر الأساسية للكاتب هي مصادر إنجليزية، و من الواضح الجهد المبذول في بحثه ليخرج بالعديد من الأمثلة و المواقف و القصص مختلفة الإتجاه ما بين السفراء، و التجار، و الرحالة، و الأسرى، و القراصنة. و يلقي الضوء على العلاقة التجارية بين إنجلترا و بين شمال أفريقيا و السلطنة العثمانية و التي كانت تقوم على الندية في وقتٍ كان البحر المتوسط و شرق الأطلنطي لا يخلو من السفن الحربية التركية و سفن القراصنة الجزائريين.
ينتقل الكاتب بعد هذا لوصف رؤية و نظرة الإنجليز للمسلمين و للهنود، و هذا الجزء من الكتاب أعتبره مكملاً لكتاب تودورف (فتح أمريكا و مسألة الآخر)، و كأن كتاب تودورف قد عرض الموضوع من الرؤية الأسبانية اللاتينية الكاثوليكية، بينما عرضها الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا بعين أنجلوسكسونية بروتستانتينية و بيوريتانية. و كالعادة فإن مبرر الاستعمار و العداء هو (الوحشية و الشرور و الفساد الأخلاقي و اللواط!) سواء عند المسلمين أو الهنود، بينما الغرب المسيحي هو حامل لواء الفضيلة و الذي يجب أن يشن الحرب المقدسة ضد (المسلمين/الهنود) لنشر رسالته السامية.
و يؤكد هذا الكتاب على رؤية الغربي المسيحي للهندي الوثني أو المسلم (الذي يعتبره وثنياً بدوره) و يوضح أنها نفس الرؤية و المنظور، فالحرب ضد أي منهما حرب صليبية، كما أن كلا منهما يوصف بالبربرية و الوحشية، و جون سميث مثلاً في وصفه للهنود في فرجينيا يتذكر الأتراك المسلمين، بينما الأسير الأمريكي فوس عندما وصف أسره في سجون الجزائريين شبههم بالهنود.

An interesting look at the relationship between the Turks, Moors, and Englishmen and chronicle of that changing relationship during the Age of Discovery. Well written, accessible, and helpful context for understanding the Muslim empires of the age and their place in history.
