One of my favourite fanfics. Star Trek AOS, Spirk, alternate storyline with Kirk and Spock meeting for the first time on Earth as 16-year olds. Kirk is part Betazoid, which leads to all kinds of telepathic shenanigans. There is also a lot of drama. Well written and a lot of fun. I tend to re-read it every now and then. This is the first story arch. There were plans for two more, but sadly they never happened. Still, good fun.
New!Trek (a.k.a. Alternate Original Series, or reboot 'verse, or Kelvinverse) AU, with teenage Spock and a part-Betazoid version of teenage Kirk (raised by Pike after abuse by his twisted stepfather was discovered) mainly on Earth, becoming immediate friends, then bonded telepathically and empathically.
Great characters (including Spock's parents, Pike, and McCoy, plus OCs Betazoid, Vulcan, human, and hybrid), both humor and real drama, coming-of-age (including Spock physically maturing more slowly), cultural world-building and diplomatic maneuvering, and some suspenseful moments.
This skilled-in-her-craft author has a number of fics where I have to question the way one or more sometimes-popular character is villainized to a probably OoC degree, but I don't even know whether Kirk's mother is *alive* in New!Trek canon, so maybe my ignorance of this specific fandom helped me to simply enjoy an AU I found quite appealing.
An author's note projected two future further story-arc ~seasons~ (Starfleet Academy, then the Enterprise), but I fear they never came to be — ??
The proofreading quality is typical for Ms. Marcos, i.e., not terrible but far from perfect. The most annoying/ occasionally confusing error is the repeated appearance of "mediate" where "meditate" belongs, since both themes are relevant.
(P.S., it's 2021 and I still haven't watched these movies! Why?? It's not like original Trek meant so much to me that the differences or even the flaws would grieve or enrage me.)
*****
11/2022: I think the mediate/meditate issue must have been fixed, and more, because this time I don't recall many error irritations.
I have seen the *first* Kelvinverse movie since initially writing this review, but I'm afraid I can't recall what was said about Winona, so my indifference to that part of canon still holds true.
N.b., one thing I didn't mention before is the personal relevance of Tarsus to this AU Jim; I can't say what it *is* w/o spoilers, but I can say that it's not fanon's typical choice, since godfather-turned-adoptive-father Pike rescued Jim fairly young.
I still consider this a 4.x★ story/series, with themes of family-by-choice, friendship and acceptance, and building understanding, in addition the wonderful central pairing/ romance, and wish it had been continued.
Brilliant! I loved, loves this arc, I read it all in one day because I just couldn't put down the stories. It was brilliantly told, always interesting, the developing relarionship between Kirk and Spock is exceptionnal and I love the backstory so rich she created/re-used from the series.
