Sixty years after The Shattered Veil, light is returning to fallen Malora. Both Ganebra and the Geophorians are fading into legend along with the ruins of advanced civilization.
Isen Layel is a young woman who believes she has lost everything. She was born into a desolate and barren world and has no hope for any future for either herself or for her people. The recent death of her beloved Torin has thrown her even further into despair and she has little desire to discover a purpose for her life.
Just as Isen is ready to surrender herself to misery, the immortal Aulor Bethel arrives to offer her a task. He and his companions have searched for six decades for any survivors of the Tenjeri people, and Isen may be his last chance of finding them. The legendary Tenjeri city of Trieskel is rumored to lie across the ocean of Ara. Will they find it, or is Trieskel as frozen and forgotten as Isen's heart?
Shadows of Absolution is a loose sequel to the Echoes of Oblivion trilogy, and is set sixty-one years after The Shattered Veil.
Courtney M. Privett is the author of The Malora Octet, Huron, and The Bacra Chronicles. She spent her childhood in rural northeastern Michigan and graduated from the University of Missouri-Rolla (now Missouri University of Science and Technology) in 2005 with a degree in ceramic engineering. She lives in Washington with her husband, three young children, and three useless cats. In addition to being a writer, she is an accidental artist, a classical percussionist, a former analytical chemist, and a vivid dreamer who has both auditory-tactile synesthesia and narcolepsy.
*I received this book for free through Goodreads First Read and I am reviewing it after giving it a thorough reading.*
The main word I can use to describe this book is fascinating. The characters, the world setting, the magic systems...all of it. I am sad that my first interaction with this series was book 5 in a series, but that gives me hope because it means there is more of this awesome world to explore.
I really enjoyed the characters, Dacibrega's metamorphosis was incredibly interesting, I have never seen a story with someone who could change genders and I think seeing people's reaction to that in story was amazing, if not gut wrenching at times. Anyone who has been at the very bottom of despair can relate to Isen, Holly is harder to relate to but I could not help but feel incredible sadness for him. There are certainly several times I teared up while reading this book.
The word setting and its unusual breed of magic is probably my favorite thing about this book and definitely going to drive me to seek out the others in this series. I have always been fascinated with stories that take place in post-apocalypse worlds and this story certainly has a good one. Mixing magic with a once thriving technological world, and getting to see the ruins of said world was enjoyable. I do wish we could have seen a few more ruined cities or maybe run into more pockets of civilization.
I found the book had a slightly slow start, setting up characters and such. Mainly because we are from the perspective of Isen and her constant soul crushing despair made it hard to get through at first, but once other characters arrived and joined center stage the plot moved quickly. It was one of those 'read in one night' sort of things after the first 50 or so pages.
The ending was extremely bitter-sweet. That is all I am going to say on that subject.

I won this on goodreads. I have to admit that I am only about 3/4s of the way through this book but I felt the need to post a review early because I am enjoying this so much. Having read a great deal of fantasy over the last 35 years plus, I have to say that I am rarely surprised by plot anymore. However, this is a unique world and I am impressed by the characters and story so far. I will definitely be looking into the author's other works!

Ms. Privett paints a vivid world for her characters to come to life in, and their struggles and journeys had me glued to every page.
