When Ralph Bennett's life seems it can get no worse, in walks a man with a box that clearly is worth its weigh in gold. Ralph can't help but steal it, desperate for money and any way out of his life as a servant. He ignores the box's warning and opens it, unwittingly releasing his Doppelg(t)nger -- his perfect double. F.E. Higgins has been fascinated by the macabre ever since seeing a ghostly apparition as a child. Nowadays Higgins travels the lands that these books describe, collecting strange artifacts and the even stranger stories behind them. When not in pursuit of a story, Higgins may be found in a haunted house in Kent, where a dismembered hand cradles a large diamond on the mantelpiece.

A nice short story, kind of a tale from the sinister city? Maybe not officially. I think this book is one from a series by different authors designed to encourage people (kids) who don't read get into reading. I enjoyed it, i love all of F.e. Higgins other books and whole heartedly recommend them. One thing I didn't really get was the cover, it's a nice enough cover, quite spooky but it doesn't have anything to do with the story as far as I can tell.
