The Raven Chronicles #1

Daughter of Hauk

Rate this book
For the orphaned elf, Arwenna, life had treated her kindly. Her human foster parents raised her well, preparing her for life as a cleric of the God, Silas. The illusion shattered when she was convicted of treason by the Paladins of Silas and executed.

Death wasn’t the paradise she expected. Tortured by demons, the layers of lies that had clouded her mind began to peel away. She’d been tricked into betraying Senyan, a man she thought she loved. Her skills had been used to bind the Demon Lord, Corse, to him. She was never intended to serve Silas. Arwenna bore the mark of a Daughter of Hauk.

Would Hauk give her the chance to stop Corse from fully manifesting in the world? And would she be able to save Senyan from the abyss she helped send him to?

This is a book that I would highly recommend to readers that want to go beyond the shallow sword & sorcery fantasy novel and step into a world filled with surprising depth and exciting character development.

The author has created a dark fantasy world where gods keep their fingers in the goings on of their followers, and believable, evil characters do their bidding. These dark characters are driven by hatred, revenge, ego and a consuming lust for power, and you feel that as you turn the pages. You start to really develop a hatred for Bohr and his ilk, and want Arwenna to deliver some justice.

Speaking of character development, the author has delivered it in spades. Arwenna and her band of sometimes merry travelers, are fleshed out characters with depth and complexity that is refreshing. You can read and feel for the tough decisions that they sometimes make and the consequences that result. You cringe when they decide to keep a secret that should be told and smile when they suddenly catch a break. In short, you feel for these characters as if they were your own close circle of friends.

If you're looking for a fantasy novel that makes you want to hate evil and cheer on the good guys who are more than just 2 dimensional place-holders, then this is a book you want to pick up and read.

Arwenna has her head chopped off and is then tortured in a hell dimension. Through some miracle, she is resurrected and given another chance. This is when she learns she has a greater calling, one that will test her mettle at every turn.

KateMarie Collins captures the reader on the very first page. Her characters are strong, both male and female, and they all show their weaknesses as well as their strengths no matter what situation they're in. Collins knowledge of fantasy, especially quest fantasy, is easily comparable to Robert Jordan and his Wheel of Time series. Never before have I encountered an author capable of giving me the deep understanding of a quest well searched, a battle well fought, nor characters who live and love such as these do.

This book has the feel of the beginning of a wonderful series, and I hope Collins sees fit to give us another quest for Arwenna and her group in the near future. Those who loved Jordan's masterful series will find a new author to live in KateMarie Collins.

5 Stars and a “Magical Read” Shout Out!

As a debut novel, Ms. Collins has definitely showcased her talents as you try to guess ahead what will happen next in each epic scene only to be surprised and then by the end, you just can’t wait to find the next installment of this series! The characters were very well defined, her use of flashbacks to develop the past while moving through the present was exceptional and as I read I was able to visualize everything as she did such an excellent job of weaving intricate details into fanciful imagery.

Arwenna is the elven main character of this epic fantasy and she is so well defined that she was easily endeared to my heart as I wanted to pick her up and help her along the way in her war against the Corse. Alas, just as I felt like reaching into the page, she would surprise me with even more strength as she continued on her quest and I was mesmerized again and again by the writer’s talent for portraying the terror and the struggles all the characters faced or caused.

Filled with legends, secrets, epic battles, magic and the age old battle of good versus evil, this author has done an exceptional job with her magical writing talents. This is a must read for any lover of good books, no matter your genre preference. If you are a Dungeon’s and Dragons, World of Warcraft, Hobbit/Lord of the Rings fan as I am, you won’t want to miss this great novel!

Daughter of Hauk transports us into a Medieval-like world of wizards and witches and elves and devils where anything is liable to happen to anyone at any moment. Kate Marie Collins’ characters fight for their lives and souls, and there’s no help for us readers--we’re swept along in the fury and pain and joy of a war where swords and magic and gems and chains and good and evil battle for domination of the universe. Lest this sounds like just a kids’ story, it’s not. It’s for anyone who can read.
The Daughter of the title, Arwenna, is on a quest to save her people as well as on a quest to find herself, her destiny, and the truth of her past. Her companions love and protect her not only as a person, but as the only one with the power to bring them victory. Collins invests the tale with all the mythic power it suggests and deserves. The legends and secrets are numerous and intriguing. The battles are epic, their outcome often in doubt. And, whatever you do, do not skip the epilogue. Without that, you’re left without the heart of this very engaging novel.

Arwenna is an elf taken from her war-ravaged home as a child and raised by humans to be a cleric to the god, Silas. As a young adult, Arwenna is executed for treason by the Paladins of Silas. She was tricked into betraying Senyan, the man she loved, by binding Corse, the Demon Lord, to him.

Daughter of Hauk: Book 1 of the Raven Chronicles is set in a fantasy land where magic is used to fight horrific wars, cure diseases, and even return the dead to life. Kate Marie Collins wields her story telling magic to show the life of Arwenna, her death, and rebirth. She also who bares the mark of Hauk, one for the most powerful gods. It becomes her quest, with the help of her warrior friends, Barek and Y’Durkie, to raise an army and stop the inevitable carnage if Corse is permitted to take over the world.

Collins fills each chapter of Daughter of Hauk with heart throbbing action that keeps pulses racing and pages turning until the last paragraph. But don’t fret; book 2 is in the works.

I received this book for a honest review. Let me start by saying Ms. Collins is a phenomenal writer. Daughter of Hauk: The Raven Chronicles Book 1 is a fantastic read. I read it a second time to fully experience the adventure of her characters before writing the review. Even better the second time.

You’re drawn you into a magical world of light and dark magic from page 1. The characters and story are full of richness. As the author weaves the story you’re right there with the characters. The book is written in such a charming way that Kate not only tells you and shows you with her words, you feel the story of the characters as well.

If you’re a fan of Robert Jordan, Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, J. R. Tolkien, Tad Williams, or Terry Brooks, you’ll definitely love Daughter of Hauk.

Ms. Collins has once again captured my interest from the beginning. I can’t wait to read the continuation of this series.

I must confess, despite having played World of Warcraft a fair bit, Daughter of Hauk, by KateMarie Collins is not the type of fiction I would normally pick up and read. However, from the opening pages the author placed me in a world filled with armor-clad elves and half-orcs wielding mighty swords and casting magical spells. In short order I began cheering for the protagonist, Arwenna, as she and her gang carry on an epic adventure while battling their evil enemies. I particularly enjoyed Collins' vivid descriptions to not only paint the scenes in the book, but also to portray the characters' use of magic.

If you love epic tales of fantasy, this book is a great read. If you think this type of book is not your cup of tea, I encourage you to give Daughter of Hauk a try, you won't be disappointed!

Although the opening of the story was a bit confusing, it quickly became clear what was going on, and the story took off. This was one of the best stories I've read in a long time, with the perfect blend of fantasy, action, adventure, drama, and romance. Collins has a wonderful writing style that is easy to follow and hard to put down. I tried to guess at what would happen a few times along the way, but was mostly surprised at the outcomes that occured. By the last third of the book, I had to read through it and see how it was going to turn out. If you like fantasy, you're going to love "Daughter of Hauk."

Some things in the story weren't quite clear for me. And I thought the characters could use more description. But overall, KateMarie has penned a sprawling, often dark, action-packed, emotional fantasy adventure. Her story pushes the bounds of life and death, love and hatred, sacrifice and betrayal. KateMarie never forgets that emotional content is the soul of art -- and of a grand tale. And Daughter of Hauk is both.

Enjoyed this book. This book focused at least as much on character as on plot. I prefer a strong plot, especially in epic fantasy, but strong characters enrich the experience immensely. The magic is a little more powerful than I usually prefer, and the dead don't always stay dead, but good twists and a satisfying climax makes it a To-Be-Recommended for me.
