The 11th Floor: Awakening is a sequel to The 11th Floor. Where a lot of book series tend to embellish, go bigger, better and faster with every outing, the author decides to keep the pace the same with a few tweaks. This actually works for the book itself and reads more like a second longer chapter then a separate book altogether.
Luke, the protagonist from the first book, is still having nightmares. After visiting a doctor he realises that he can control his dreams and in doing so face his nemesis from the original outing. Once he gets a handle on this, he intentionally goes back to his dreams in order to confront his demons.
The story is shorter and a little less terrifying than the original but the author has fun with it. Luke is now a Neo-type figure (The Matrix, slyly referenced in one sentence), able to control his abilities in the dreams and use them to prevent danger and death. Like the crossbreed of Nightmare on Elm Street and Inception, this book is more action orientated then horror but it still manages to cap a story arc not finished in the first book. As Luke enables himself in the nightmares, it becomes apparent that more sinister forces are at work and he is the only one who can stop them.
Another solid outing from Charles Culver. This may not be everyone's cup of tea but I enjoyed it immensely. I actually read both books in one sitting and I can't wait for a third instalment (which may have been hinted at the end of the book). I will definitely read more work from this author.
