Michal Hvorecký

He is the author of two collections of short stories: Strong sense of Cleanliness (1998) and Hunters & Gatherers (2001). His novel The Final Hit appeared in 2003, Plush in 2005 (published in 2006 in German translation as City: Der unwahrscheinlichste aller Orte) and Eskorta in 2007 (will be published in 2009 in German translation).
His books have been translated into German, Polish, Czech and Italian. Translations of his fiction and journalism have appeared in print in Germany, the United Kingdom, Slovenia, Hungary, Poland and the Czech Republic. The novel Plush was dramatised and performed in the Prague theatre Na zabradli and in Schauspiel Hannover in Germany. In addition, Hvorecky writes regularly for various newspapers and magazines.
He has been awarded several literary prizes and fellowships, including the Literary Colloquium in Berlin, MuseumsQuartier in Vienna, Goethe Institut in Munich, and an International Writing Program in the United States.
The author also contributes to Slovak newspapers such as daily SME. Some of his articles translated into English can be found at the webportal Salon.
In 2000 he co-founded the Wilsonic Festival in Bratislava with Tibor Holoda and served as one of its co-organizers until 2001.

"Najväčšie zlo na svete nespôsobuje zloba a brutálnosť, ale takmer vždy slabosť."
Keď som začala čítať túto knihu, trochu som sa obávala, aký príbeh z komerčnej plavby na lodi a cudzokrajných mien vzíde. Ostala som však milo prekvapená autorovou schopnosťou striedania línii príbehu a opisu okolia, povolaní či jednotlivých charakterov. Taktiež ma príbeh nadchol silným symbolizmom, mysterióznosťou a častým využitím hyperbol.
Dokázala som súcitiť s hlavným hrdinom Martinom Royom, či už to bolo pri opise úskalí práce na lodi, alebo zlých podmienok pre prekladateľov na Slovensku. Dokonca, po prečítaní odseku o tomto náročnom remesle, som sa cítila zle za svoje časté používanie Google prekladača. Ani historické fakty ma neomrzeli, keďže boli akurátne poprepletané vtipnými dialógmi starčekov. Dodali príbehu magickosť a zároveň vytvárali vhodné paralely k vývinu deja. Dunaj a Mona hrali v príbehu dôležitú úlohu, bez nich by nebol ani zďaleka taký mysteriózny. Mne osobne sa páčilo aj použitie anglických výrazov, pridalo situáciám na autenticite.
Medzi pár vecí, ktoré by som urobila inak, patrí scéna (flashback) o tom ako sa Martin spoznal s Monou. Prišlo mi to až moc romantické a klišé na to, aby som tomu uverila. Okrem toho sa mi nepáčilo, ako kniha podporuje stereotypy o istých skupinách ľudí a občas až moc zovšeobecňuje. Taktiež mi v príbehu chýbala silnejšia a komplexnejšia ženská postava, ktorá by vyvážila sily medzi pohlaviami, pretože takto vo mne kniha zanechala dojem muž - jediný možný záchranca.
Celkovo sa mi kniha čítala ľahko a rada som sa k nej vracala. Prebudila vo mne túžbu začať čítať slovenských autorov, za čo som jej veľmi vďačná.

A jaj. S autorem jsme se zcela minuli. Nemít knihu ve čtečce, která za nic nemůže, prásknul bych s ní do kouta. Co to jako mělo být? Detektivní příběh? Ani omylem. Autora zjevně nezajímá zápletka, motivace, nějaký vývoj. Mrtvoly se hodí do vody a jede se dál. Thriller? Panebože. Ani v béčkovém filmu na primě kolem půlnoci není tolik logických lapsů. Ke konci už spisovatel zcela rezignoval. Finále s výbuchem, potopením a "vyšetřováním" je totálně k smíchu. Příběh o lásce? Ztrátách a nálezech? Opět. Pár zajímavých stran, nahozený příběh a rozpliznutí v nic. Netuším, proč se postavy chovají zrovna tak jak se chovají (jako kreténi), co je k tomu vede a jaký to má mít smysl. Příběh o řece? O Dunaji? Přes desítky uvedených zdrojů mi jako nejpravděpodobnější zdroj vychází wiki a turistický průvodce. Nenašel jsem tam nic jiného. Že by příběh o fanatické nenávisti k americkým důchodcům? To ještě tak nejspíš.

Miestami som mala pocit, že autor píše celkom ucelene (mal asi slinu), niekde však boli časti, ktoré boli napísané akosi nasilu, alebo podľa mňa dosť odveci, proste také digresie... Ale celkovo vnímam knihu pozitívne, aj keď mi hlavná postava nesadla. Niekde bol príbeh nevyvážený, proste mi chýbalo lepšie vysvetlenie, alebo opis, alebo čojaviemčo. Ak to celé malo mať symboliku toku Dunaja, tak ok. Proste priemerná kniha, ktorú po prečítaní milerada vrátim do knižnice a ďakujem si, že som za ňu nevyhodila kopec peňazí.

První třetina byla svěží, těšil jsem se na každou další kapitolu. Po první kolizi (souvisí s názvem knihy) však nějak autorovi docházel dech. Nebo... možná naopak, možná rostla touha toho hodně napsat a objevovaly se tam - pro vývoj postav a zápletky (a pro mě) - ne moc podstatné informace, faktografické údaje z historie a geografie. Přesto je to příjemné překvapení a váhal jsem mezi 3 a 4 hvězdičkami.

Kniha má veľmi dobrý začiatok. Popis masovej turistiky je dokonalý, ako človek z tohto odvetvia som sa veľmi nasmiala a musím autora pochváliť - naozaj to tak je :). Príbeh ale sám o sebe je až moc nereálny, záver skazil celú knihu. Ako letné oddychové čítanie ale poslúži, hlavne keď je to také krátke.

při čtení jsem myslel na Cognettiho román Osm hor, kde hory představují nejen kulisy příběhu, ale i plátno, na které vypravěč promítá pocity a nálady jeho aktérů. podobnou roli tady hraje voda, přesněji řeka Dunaj.
hlavním lidským hrdinou je dobře srozumitelný mladý muž, kterého semílá kolotoč nadnárodní společnosti a který má přitom svůj druhý svět, kulturní a citlivý. symbolické je i to, jak hrdina penzionované americké turisty zasypává detaily o Dunaji, včetně historických a literárních souvislostí, i když ví, že hází hrách na stěnu.
přes bohatství obrazů a informací a i přesto, že příběh je spíš vedlejší a místy kulhá, se kniha čte svižně a hladce

Rychle a plynule citanie, zaujimave su cestopisne casti a mnozstvo zaujimavosti. Ale kvazi-detektivna zapletka je uplne zbytocna, rusi, nerozvija dej. Ovela zaujimavejsie by bolo rozvinut Monu, ktorej pribeh je absolutne nejasny, pritom vztah s Martinom zaujimavy.

Naozaj nepochopím, prečo sa autor snažil urobiť z každého, vrátane čitateľov, totálnych hlupákov. No aspoňže cestopisné pasáže sa dali čítať.

Gut zu lesen, man kommt schnell in die Hauptcharaktere rein, insbesondere in den von Roy. Ein typischer Vertreter der postkommunistischen, gut ausgebildeten Bürger Mitteleuropas, welcher halt zuschaut, dass er irgendwie Sicherheit und Stabilität in sein Leben bekommt um dann irgendwann eine Familie zu gründen. Am liebsten mit seiner Jugendliebe, welche jedoch längst den Kapitalismus zu ihren Gunsten nutzt und ihn selbst als Sprungbrett in die westeuropäische Tristesse der Jetztzeit. Dazwischen interessante Reiseberichte aus Sicht eines abgeklärten Insiders und durchaus anspruchsvolle Häppchen aus der Geschichte des Flusses. U.a. habe ich dazugelernt, woher KravMaga stammt. Es ist die Beschreibung eines gleichzeitig unauffälligen wie unerhört unmenschlichen Pragmatismus, der das "Geschäftsmodell" Vieler entlang dieses Flusses aufzeigt, und, aus eigenen Reiseerfahrungen bis hin zum Delta auf der ukrainischen Seite, kann ich vieles verstehen, auch den offenbar völlig abgefuckten rumänischen Kapitän. Der Schluss scheint beim ersten Lesen seltsam, aber naja, Roy ist fixiert auf eine klassische, bürgerliche Existenz, und wenn nicht mit ihr, dann wenigstens mit einem Teil von ihr. Und damit die Hoffnung, dass sie irgendwann zu ihm kommen wird. Eine Hoffnung, die sich, wie so viele Hoffnungen in diesen Ländern, vermutlich nicht erfüllen wird.
Kleiner Nachtrag: Im Rahmen der tschechischen Kulturtage, Focus Slowakei, den Autor getroffen, er hatte aus diesem Buch vorgelesen und noch direkte Einblicke in die slowakische Literaturszene gegeben. War spannend & gut.
