Astrid Anna Emilia Lindgren, née Ericsson, (1907 - 2002) was a Swedish children's book author and screenwriter, whose many titles were translated into 85 languages and published in more than 100 countries. She has sold roughly 165 million copies worldwide. Today, she is most remembered for writing the Pippi Longstocking books, as well as the Karlsson-on-the-Roof book series.

Published by dtv-junior in 2003 (and rendered into German from Astrid Lindgren's original Swedish texts by multiple translators), Erzählungen is an anthology of nineteen short stories (and with some of the selected tales having originally appeared as dedicated picture books and others as short stories without accompanying artwork). And although like it is usual the case with short story anthologies, I have not enjoyed all of the featured Astrid Lindgren tales equally, generally speaking Erzählungen is absolutely textually delightful (and showing in short, humorous and sometimes also poignant and even at times heartbreaking narratives that which makes Astrid Lindgren such a magical author and superbly demonstrating that Lindgren always textually understands childhood and the importance, the necessity of presenting for her young readers relatable texts of both the joys and the struggles of the latter and that children are "people" to be taken seriously, to be celebrated and also to be respected and appreciated).

Now yes indeed, most of the tales found in Erzählungen I already was familiar with prior to my perusal (having either encountered them in other Astrid Lindgren short story anthologies or as picture books when I was a child in Germany), with very sweet and tenderly nostalgic remembrances, and how Lindgren's picture books and also having some of her short stories read to me as a young child then made me really keen on wanting to try, on wanting to read the author's novels (and on my own), like for example, Astrid Lindgren's Emil, the Noisy Village and in particular the Madicken, the Madita books (and of course also Pippi Longstocking, but to be honest, I do like and have always liked Astrid Lindren's more reality based novels considerably more than her Pippi Longstocking tales). And while there is only one story featured in Erzählungen that I have always actively disliked (both as a child and also now as an adult reader), since well, the lies told as a true story by Anne in Unterm Kirschbaum feel not only majorly uncomfortable and tedious but that the Gypsies stealing a child scenario makes me as an older adult feel annoyed, uncomfortable and that Unterm Kischbaum is actually thus also majorly dated, majorly politically incorrect and stereotypical, I do have to admit that in the story of Etwas Lebendiges für den lahmen Peter, while I still really adore how the two young sisters give their physically challenged teenaged friend (Peter) a kitten for Christmas, the ending of Etwas Lebendiges für den lahmen Peter, which clearly shows that the rest of the litter of kittens has been deliberately drowned, this now really makes me livid (and in particular since Astrid Lindgren seems to simply textually explain this as being something natural and acceptable with regard to deemed superfluous pet cats).

But still, even with me totally not liking Unterm Kirschbaum and certainly now in 2023 finding the ending for Etwas Lebendiges für den lahmen Peter more than a bit problematic, I generally have enjoyed the nineteen Astrid Lindgren stories of Erzählungen as much now as I did then (as I did when I was a child). And yes (provided that you have a decent reading fluency of the German language), I do warmly recommend Erzählungen and indeed think that if you are ever planning on reading Astrid Lindgren in German translation, then her short stories (and also her picture books) are a nice and pretty easy to read starting point.

Sehr Grimm-esque, ein Buch nicht nur für Kinder, kurze Ausschnitte ohne Anfang und Ende, aber meist mit einer gut versteckten Lehre..

POPSUGAR Reading Challenge 2019: A Book set in Scandinavia

Naja, spielt in Schweden, ne?

Ich geb jetzt mal zu, dass ich mir nicht wirklich sicher bin ob das auch das Buch ist was ich gelesen hab, aber es kommt dem zumindest am nächsten. Wie auch immer.

Astrid Lindgren war ein großer Teil meiner Kindheit. Pippi Langstrumpf, Michel und Madita allen voran. Zugegeben dass meiste davon davon spielte sich eher im Fernsehen ab, als auf Schwarz und Weiß gedruckt.

Ich wusste gar nicht mehr dass dieses Buch überhaupt existiert, bis meine Großmutter es beim Aufräumen gefunden und mir gegeben hat. Natürlich war meine Neugierde geweckt. Ich erinnere mich an recht viele Geschichten und Bücher die mir vorgelesen wurden, als ich noch sehr jung war, aber an dieses konnte ich mich so gar nicht erinnern.

Es handelt sich hierbei um eine Kollektion verschiedner Kurzgeschichten die Lindgren für Kinder verfasste, mit einigen Illustrationen verschönert. Naja, wie man es nimmt. Die Zeichnungen sind interessant, aber manchmal etwas seltsam und ich kann mir gut vorstellen dass sie dem ein oder anderen Kind vielleicht zu gruselig sind.

Die Zielgruppe sind definitiv recht kleine Kinder, obwohl Lindgren keinen halt vor düsteren Momenten macht, die den ein oder anderen Erwachsenen erstaunen werden.

So sehr ich auch Pippi als Kind geliebt hat muss ich jedoch leider sagen, dass mich diese Sammlung nur milde begeistert hat. Ich kann nicht einmal genau sagen warum. Keine der Geschichten ist wirklich hängen geblieben oder hat mich mitgerissen. Wenn ich zurückdenke an Märchen der Gebrüder Grimm oder Andersen oder aber Peter Pan und der Zauberer von Oz, ist mir sofort klar wieso sie mir im Gedächtnis geblieben sind. Und hier ist mir bewusst wieso dies nicht der Fall war. Es ist alles sehr nett, aber mehr auch leider nicht.

To be honest I'm not even sure if I ever read books by Astrid Lindgren when I was young... I know the Pippi Longstocking stories very well, but it might very well be that I only knew them from the TV series. Anyway, it's never too late to discover some youth classics, and sometimes you can even appreciate them more as an adult.

This collection is, in one word, excellent.

Of the 19 stories, some are hilarious - one of them, Big Sister and Little Brother, I even read twice at the same evening because it was so funny. Children's innocence and their tenderness of heart are the main theme throughout all stories, but there are serious themes hidden in them as well, such as lost parents, growing up in poverty or the relationships and competition between siblings.

Dieses Buch von Astrid Lindgren war mein erstes und auch ein vorlesebuch, weswegen ich mich noch sehr gut an die Geschichten erinnere. Es sind alles Geschichten über Kinder und deren Erlebnissen, teilweise ein bisschen märchenhaft erzählt. Einige sind einfach nur niedlich, nette vorlesegeschichten; andere haben ernstere Themen über die man auch diskutieren kann wie z.B. Krankheit, Tod, Armut.. mit der entsprechenden Erklärung finde ich ein sehr schönes Kinderbuch.
