Before you pick up this book, you need to read the first two in the series or you will be lost. The first book is called The Fringe Worlds (The Human Chronicles - Book One), and the second is called Alien Assassin (The Human Chronicles -- Book Two).
The author does a good job of continuing the series, blending believable technology with action and adventure with a little dose of aliens. Readers of the series will not be disappointed with the action, as well as the return to Earth. This was a really fast read, and I am ready for the next book in the series.
Similar to other books in the series, there are several spelling, grammatical, and typographical errors in the Kindle version of the book that were quite annoying and make you lose your train of thought. I would strongly suggest hiring an independent editor (or two) to correct this version as well as future versions
The story continues in this third installment. There's plenty of action and the plot expands to include Earth and many more humans. Unfortunately, all the grammatical errors and poor editing continue as well. This could be a great series instead of merely a good one with better editing and a more conscientious writer. I'll continue reading the series, but I need a break from the frustration of all the errors!
A good continuation to the series. Suffers from some of the same issues...poor editing, simplistic writing (at times), but is a really fun read. I'm enjoying the series and looking forward to the next book.
This book is like "SEALs in space" but here The bad guys are aliens so no remorse in killing them. I liked better The first book where there was more about aliens worlds and society
And this is where I have give up on this series, at least for now. I was hoping the story would get more intriguing and less predictable but no. The writing, the story, the characters, everything is so simplistic. Every chapter is a yawn and I keep rushing through the book hoping it will end soon. If at least one of the characters were even remotely likable or least interesting maybe I could’ve continued but it’s all just stereotypes and...boring. I honestly don’t even know what to say about this series except it feels like a waste of time. It’s not the worst I’ve read but it’s nowhere near good either.
I wanted to keep reading this series. The author has created a very engaging story line and the writing is good. That said, the republican bias is ridiculous . I read sci-fi BECAUSE it’s not political. Also because it shows a glimmer of hope for our confused species, assuming we don’t tear each other apart. I kept trying to get past some of the plot lines and comments from the characters but one I got to the point where Adam praises Donald Trump, I was out. Ruined a great series. Reader beware.
I struggled to put this one down. It's an engrossing story with relatable characters. Besides a few minor editing errors I have nothing to complain about. I can't we wait to start on the next one...
Book 2 was a fun read and had a few errors. I have enjoyed the plot and characters in this book. The plot has developed well and is a bit predictable. The characters are well developed and introduces a lot of new ones throughout the story. I look forward to the next book.
This book is different from the rest in that it is substantially longer and much more time seems to have gone into writing it. A lot of things from the first two books are coming together and the main plot literally explodes onto us. It’s like the first two books where just the first 10-15 minutes of the opening episode of a new TV-series and this book is the other 30-40 minutes.
As I said, these three books would “only” be the opening episode. Earth are mixed up in an interstellar war. Adam is back in space with a bunch of SEAL buddies and his old friends from the earlier books. The stage now seems to be set for a long running series.
The one thing I do not like very much with how the book series has developed is the plotting, scheming, deception and treason bit. Earth has been tricked into the war. Most of humanity has been fooled and Adam is officially a traitor. To continue the TV-series analogy, it smells a wee bit too much of soap opera to me.
But, so far, this is luckily a minor complaint. Unlike some books, for instance some of the later works by David Weber, the time spent on the political nonsense is sufficiently little and balanced by a good deal of action and butt kicking, in particular by Adam of course. The President of the US did, although quite a bit too late, figure out what was going on so Adam and his friends now have some real backing when going back to stomping aliens behind the enemy’s lines.
I look forward to reading the next one coming out and I hope it can maintain the balance between the behind-the-back-plotting-and-scheming and the more interesting stuff.
I couldn't finish this book. It's worse than The other two and I would say that you should only read either as a dare or a lost bet. The writer's racism gets a good workout, substitute black, asian, muslim, buddhist, European, or anything non-american for alien and the writers racial/cultural (mainly racial) superiority bent is and has been on display for all three of his books.
The other two books were pretty bad but if like me you're curious about where this was headed, I'd say don't bother. There's no character development (what's there to develop), so there is empty dialogue and the action makes no sense.
The Klin seem adept at blowing up their own ships. Why? The Klin failed to blow up their base at Z something, leaving bodies behind to prove they are still around? They increase the number of troops by subjecting women to repeated rape? They don't extract eggs and fertilize them, then force women to act as surrogates? The plucky humans use a Tom Cruise maneuver to take on five enemy ships of the same size? (The main characters actually reference T.C. In the book). A single nuclear weapon destroys four enemy warships, in space? The warships all have windows on their bridge? There's so much more wrongness in this book. The writer's personal politics are as appalling as his concept of combat of any kind.
The freed humans are all U.S. citizens apparently and the plucky heroes land in the U.S. Southwest. It got too stupid to try read at that point and I knew more about this writer than I ever wanted.
I read The War of Pawns, which is the third book in T.R. Harris' series The Human Chronicles. Our adventurers have made it home, but things aren't as they were before and the merry band is soon heading out for more adventure as the war kicks up. As I've stated in previous reviews for this series, the story is really good and a lot of fun. As this is book three I hate to give away too much of the story, but the die has been cast and the alien intrigue is now clear to more than just Adam Cain and his companions as they head out to do battle and protect the interests of the human race. Once again, however, the lack of care with editing and proofreading brought down the score. It's wonderful to have a great story and readers want that, but when the lack of editing is evident on almost every page it becomes a problem that distracts me from the story. Independently published or not, at least have some of your friends read it over for errors and ask that they mark them. That said, I've had a great time running around in this universe and will probably read the fourth book that has been announced. If you enjoy a good action/science fiction adventure story this may be for you if you're willing to take the editing errors with a grain of salt.
