Middle Game

Rate this book
Can a working threesome find a fourth to help them balance their lives? Rook, Knight and Bishop believe so.

The happy threesome know there's something missing and when they find Jason, they're pretty sure he's just what they need.

Join these four sexy men as they explore the dynamics between them and work toward finding a happy ending of their very own.

Book two in the Chess Series

Can Jason be with three amazing men and not lose his heart in the process?

Living with and being the play toy of three men is more rewarding than Jason could have imagined. Bishop, Knight and Rook each have their own way of loving on him. In Bishop he finds a work-out partner, friendship, and good solid lovemaking. He isn’t sure what to make of Knight, but the man is a brilliant artist and there are worse things than being Knight’s subject for his latest series of paintings. And the kinky things Knight does to him blow his mind on a regular basis.

It’s Rook who Jason is falling in love with, though. The bright, loving, sexy man has him head over heels and Jason’s beginning to worry that he’s getting himself in way over his head. Can he continue to be with these men without losing his heart?

I'm pretty sure I'm a masochist deep down - and a pathetic one, as well.
Otherwise, why would I keep on reading this series, even though I absolutely detested the first book.
Or, we could call me an optimist, who keeps on trying and trying to find the bright points in books.

That was my face after having read this book. Actually, this was my face 20 pages in the book, if not less.
I liked the beginning. I even like Jason & Bishop. I tend to like Rook & Knight, too. As characters, not as a relationship.
Somehow, I still feel Jason is outside of the group, Bish dotes on Knight and everyone just love Rook, because hey, he's Rookie, so of course we have to love him, yeah?
No.

I like M/M books with sex - and lots of it and of the steamy kind, please.
This book has too much. Way too much for it to be completely healthy. And what is up with all these small pairings?
Isn't this a foursome? A committed threesome, which gained a new partner? Because it sure doesn't feel like it.
It feels like a threesome and then it feels like to pairings of two people. Absolutely not a foursome.

I need love, Mr. Michael! Love!
I don't need to read about the angsty types and how when the one person who actually has a reason to have angst is dismissed. Instead he gets to have ... sex, surprise surprise.
Also, I would love to have one book where Knight isn't necessarily a demeaned brat & Rook doesn't get to be in the middle. And I would jump up and down of somewhat happiness, if we could get more Knight/Jason & Bishop/Jason interactions. And to just well read about Jason being the submissive he is.

Bottom line about this book:

1.5 for this book & because I'm in a good mood, I am bumping it to two. Not that it actually deserves it, but nevermind.

4 Stars – 5 Flames

Are you really considered a play toy when you’re living happily ever after? At least, that’s the way I see things for Jason. Sure, three different lovers play him with, but it’s not like he isn’t enjoying every minute.

The thing I liked most about this installment was that there was a little more of a storyline to it. Jason loved all three of them, but it was Rook he’s falling IN love with. After a game of truth or dare, Jason starts to question if “being a play toy” is really something his heart can handle.

We get a little more Knight in this one, which I really enjoyed. We also get to see a little more of the relationship between Bishop and Knight. I can now see why they wanted Jason for Rook, even though they all seem to have enough love for one another.

Basically, you’re getting just a little more of each character, a little more storyline and a LOT MORE intense scenes. Make sure you see the flame rating!

Continuing the chess analogy that started in the first volume, the structure of the second book is very much 'the middle game'. Relationships deepen, lines are drawn, and each of the four men settles in his role. Like in the first book, the characters use sex to bond, communicate, and have fun at the same time. The result is more cover-to-cover sex, with the added ingredient of the game behind the scenes, with each encounter contributing to the growing and changing picture of the whole.

Jason may have been forced into this situation of being the three other men's plaything, but he is certainly enjoying it. They do push him to try new things, but so far there is nothing he hasn't enjoyed. And just as he begins to settle down, and learns that he is safe with them, his emotions get in the way. He has never loved anyone the way he loves Rook, and has not had the experience of someone loving him back. Rather than enjoying the feeling, he begins to worry. He cannot fathom the possibility that Knight and Bishop love him as much as Rook does. For Jason, the conflict just grows as the story progresses.

Rook is as sweet as he has ever been, and he is the focus of Jason's developing deeper emotions. For him, loving more than one man is easy, and I don’t think he can even understand why Jason has trouble believing it is possible.

Knight is as tortured as in the first book, a true artist who lives for intense bouts of creation followed by periods of recuperation. He may not want to appear weak and vulnerable, but, deep down, he needs to let go from time to time. Bishop is there to catch him when he does collapse, and the way Bishop does this results in some extremely hot scenes. Even better, the love between these two men is also clearly visible and that makes their encounters even more enjoyable.

This second volume is a great sequel. The mix of chess and erotica is getting better every time I read one of these books, I loved getting to know the characters in more depth and, now that the scene is set, I hope we are going to see the explosive next stage really soon! If you like sexy men who challenge each other, love to see them interacting physically wherever and whenever the need strikes them, and if you're interested in seeing the chess analogy continue, you will probably like this book as much as I did.

This is MMMM smut, nothing else. The plot is razor thin, even those there's the pretense of one.

I liked Rook and Jason together, as they were super-sweet. Jason is falling in love with Rook, and that part was believable, but his feelings towards Knight and Bishop remained a mystery to me.

The rest is a big smut fest, where it became hard (har, har) to keep all the hands, cocks, and balls straight (another lame pun, sorry). I was really missing an emotional connection to the characters, aside from Jason.

I decided to give book three a chance, even though I despise the marketing ploy of cutting what's essentially one book into several books for financial reasons.

REVIEWED FOR PRISM BOOK ALLIANCE

Book 2 in the series picks up immediately where book 1 finished. Jason is becoming far more comfortable in his role but his role is losing definition. He was basically hired to play with three very sexual men but there are feelings becoming involved especially where Rook is involved.

There is a slightly different feel to this book. Although the four men still play together there is a definite divide into two couples there as well. Knight is as needy as ever but just as opposed to showing his vulnerability and it takes up a lot of Bishops time to keep him functioning. Their relationship is a lot heavier than anything that Jason feels comfortable with. Jason and Rook make up the other duo and their relationship is softer with Jason slowly falling for the other man.

As with the first book there is not a lot of story to follow but there is a huge amount of sex and even when they are not having it they are talking about it or teasing each other. They are well into the game now but the ending leaves you unsure as to how it will all play out.

I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

This story is about 4 guys in a polyamorous relationship. The next installment of the Chess series is all about naked guys having fun and loving each other. This story moves from one dirty scene to the next with very little story. For me there are two things of note. Firstly the fisting scene which isn't really my thing but it is well done. Secondly, a scene with piercing which had me squirming in my seat. It was good to read about things outside my comfort zone.

I enjoyed Middle Game. It was sexy and didn't require me to think too much. I look forward to seeing where to next for this quartet.

I am hooked on this series! I love these four men, they each bring something different to the relationship and man oh man is there a lot of hot sex. My favorite character Rook just makes me smile and I wish I had a Rookie of my own! In this book the men get closer but not as close as Jason and Rook, Jason realizes he loves Rook and doesn’t know what he is going to do with that information.
Characters: well written and easy to love
Sex: oh yes
Religious: no
Would I recommend to others: yes
More than one book in the series: yes
Genre: M/M/M/M Romance
Would I read more by this author: yes

Middle Game is a continuation of the story between Bishop, Knight, Rook and Jason. It's moved on from the beginning. Jason has moved into the house, he's agreed to be the boys play thing. Jason is a little unnerved by his level of comfort. He's never been with a man, let alone three, but each of them offer something different to Jason. What is the most unexpected is his feelings for Rook. Can he continue staying there knowing how he feels? Will the guys be able to let him leave?

I am loving this series. I love seeing the dynamic between each of the men. They each have a different and extremely sexy relationship. I can't wait to see where the rest of the series takes the guys.

~~I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads ~~

This is the second in the series - and you do need to read them in order to get the full storyline.

I loved the first book, and whole premise behind the story. Inevitably there are questions in newbie Jason's mind - an heart - which come out in this part of the story. We also get much more of Knight's modus operandi and how Bishop cares for his needs. The title is well justified, as the plot consolidates what happens as the men settle into 'normal' life together. It continues to be scorchingly hot and paints pictures that one's brain enjoys exploring!

Thank goodness the next book is waiting for me, as I need to keep reading ...

I read this book for a challenge otherwise I probably wouldnt have continued on with this series. I looked really hard to find the 2 pages of plot in amongst the 100+ of porn.
The piercing scene in this book really pissed me off. Knight said no, Bish said yes, you really want it.
FFS. He said no, why do you think you know what he wants???
Then straight after he has sex. Really?
Urgh!

Ok, I know I complain about wanting more sex, but this series is over the top. I actually want some plot. Like how did Bishop and Knight get together, how did Rook join them? Chess piece names; how did that happen?

Mine, mine, mine is just not enough. Well, enough of this series for me.

DNF-I had seen such positive reviews for this book that I was excited to start it. By page 50 I was done. Disjointed, weird characters, and excerpts from the author’s children’s (?) book used to start segments. If I could have found an interesting character, or a promise of a storyline I might have persevered longer. This was just not the book for me

A little sadder than the first volume

Warning: This review might contain what some people consider SPOILERS.

Rating: 7/10

PROS:
- We get a more solid picture in this installment of how each of the men complements each of the others, how each man brings something different to the relationship.
- I like that Jason is forming different sorts of attachments to the three other men, and that he’s growing the attachments at different speeds. He’s happily falling head over heels for Rook, becoming friends with Bishop, and admits at one point that he doesn’t even “particularly *like* Knight,” but he’s intrigued by the man. This feels realistic to me.
- The relationship between Bishop and Knight is a little unusual, but I like it. I like that Knight is always fighting Bishop so hard, but when it comes down to it, Knight knows that things won’t stop unless he uses his safeword.

CONS:
- The “for hire” situation provided an excuse for Jason to get into a relationship with the other three men, but it also means that he has in the back of his mind, always, that he’s not their true partner. This makes parts of the book a little sad.
- The characters here are very similar to other Sean Michael characters, but that might not be noticeable unless you read a lot from this author like I do.

Overall comments: I’m sure the “Jason doesn’t feel like he fits in” issue will be resolved in a later installment in the series, so at the moment I’m not too bothered by it. But this volume doesn’t end on a particularly high note. Overall, though, I still like the characters and what I feel to be a pretty honest portrayal of a poly relationship.

I really like this series. Really Like it. I like all the characters, loved the new explorations on Jasons part, HOWEVER I find myself agreeing with Gabriel Wrights review (although not the 2 stars)

While the book is funny in places, hot and sweet in others.. he's right in that it does often feel like a threesome or 2 couples. I percieved very little romantic feelings felt for Jason from Bishop (more of buddies) and most especially Knight, who appears to care very little for Jason other than a toy. And I also agree wth Gabriel that there does need to be more with Jason/Knight and Jason / Bishop, and I was waiting the whole book for Jasons submissive side to be explored, which I hoped would provide that thing in common for Knight and Jason which they so desperately need, but it didnt even get close to that possibility.
I though the focus on this book would be about Jason, or the well deserved angst on Jasons part, or the complexities of joining an estabilished group, and conflicts inherent in a relationship of this nature, however... again, the story is veered to revolve more around Rook. Who I really enjoy dont get me wrong.. but what about Jason, his new feelings for men, the distance between him and Knight, etc etc etc.
The next Book will definately be an auto buy, and dont get me wrong, I still really enjoyed it.

Review written for Love Bytes Reviews.

Jason is finally starting to settle into his new life with Bishop, Knight, and Rook; he’s also begun admitting to himself that he likes men and that he really likes Rook. He’s still being pushed to his limits with new experiences, both in and outside of the bedroom, and after each new encounter with the men he’s quickly becoming attached to, he comes out of his shell a little more. A chance conversation with Rook has unintended consequences, however, and Jason will have to decide for himself whether he can keep their agreement at the risk of his heart.

I felt this was a good continuation to the series; a couple of months have passed between the first book and this one and it was really nice to see how Jason had changed. While still shy and wary of certain things, he’s really started to open up and you can see the niche he’s finding for himself with the rest of the group. Like the previous book, there’s more sex and less story but you can still see the characters evolving, most notably Jason and Knight. This one also has had some extra content added which was a nice bonus and fit well in with the rest of the storyline. My only real complaint is that I haven’t gotten to see any major alone time between Jason and Knight but I’m hoping that will be included in the next book. I’m a greedy girl, I can’t help it.

The second in the Chess Series - Whew! I just loved this series (a total of 7 books) - it's like porn with really lovable characters and an actual plot. Who else but Sean Michael can pull off a whole series ménage à quatre?

Six of the books focus on the same 4 MC's. But, the last book in the series, Pre-Game, is actually the story of how the original 3 (Rook, Knight and Bishop) met and can be read first; however, the rest all need to be read in order.

Note that #6 "The Piercer's Game" is almost a stand-alone because it only very briefly just mentions the 4 MC's. It's about Luke (a minor character who pierces Knight, Rook & Jason) and Temple. A lovely story but could be read separately.

So here is my planned re-reading order:
#7 - Pre-Game
#1 - Opening Moves
#2 - Middle Game
#3 - En Prise
#4 - Helpmate
#5 - End-Game
#6 - The Piercer's Game

Second book, all the guys have settled in to a routine and relationship. As Jason models for Knight and Rook and Bishop head off to work. After hours has become serious play time. With the guys pairing off and joining together.

What we saw in the last book that has carried over into this one is Jason and Rook are developing a deeper relationship then Jason and the the other two, and this is starting to put a strain on things. Knight is still doing things with out thinking and Bishop is still having to bring him back in. I did think that Jason concerns was glossed over too quickly and never really dealt with, so maybe we will see it again?

But its a nice continuation of the first book.

So, I’ve definitely confirmed (in case I didn’t believe myself LOL) there is a ton of smutty times in this series. Middle Game had maybe MORE than book 1. I didn’t even know that was possible. I will say this series, however, is a perfect escape from the deep dramas, the suffocating angsty books out there. Middle Game was emotional though. I love Jason and Rook’s relationship the best. They have this outstanding compatibility. Even when vulnerability (mostly on Jason’s part) is a major factor, it’s Rook who Jason feels most comfortable with. Love is intimate, sometimes down right raunchy and Sean really emphasizes both those parts in Middle Game. Very enjoyable and entertaining read.

I really feel bad for Jason at this point. He really needed this financially, but the 3 mains of the group kind of bowled him over and now he really is at their mercy. It seems as though he doesn't have any time or space for himself, and no matter how "sweet" a boy he is any person will start to feel enslaved and diminished in his position. Knight, Rook and Bishop are all independently wealthy and Jason was about to be evicted and living out of his car before he accepted their proposition and I don't feel he's ever been treated like a real person

Cant believe I'm saying this but....umm to much point-less sex...sigh, the randomness sex without a base, too much. Was really hungry for a bit of plot, and the end how he just went with the flow after he expressed his love, unbelievable, well I guess its my fault tho what could I expect with 4 men together...sigh and I LOVE this author too...oh well..the 1st and last in this series I'm reading. Hope the next book I pick up belonging to this author satisfies my hunger lol.
