Friedrich Dürrenmatt (1921 – 1990) was a Swiss author and dramatist.

Dürrenmatt was born in the Emmental (canton of Bern), the son of a Protestant pastor. His grandfather Ulrich Dürrenmatt was a conservative politician. The family moved to Bern in 1935. Dürrenmatt began to study philosophy and German language and literature at the University of Zurich in 1941, but moved to the University of Bern after one semester. In 1943 he decided to become an author and dramatist and dropped his academic career. In 1945-46, he wrote his first play, "It is written". On October 11 1946 he married actress Lotti Geissler. She died in 1983 and Dürrenmatt was married again to another actress, Charlotte Kerr, the following year.

He was a proponent of epic theater whose plays reflected the recent experiences of World War II. The politically active author gained fame largely due to his avant-garde dramas, philosophically deep crime novels, and often macabre satire. One of his leading sentences was: "A story is not finished, until it has taken the worst turn". Dürrenmatt was a member of the Gruppe Olten.

This play is set on the problem of guilt and justice and it's philosophical reflection.....

The play itself is a process of creating a play as the author conversation with the director form the frame of the plot.. .
Diego ,the double of Pedro informs him that he(Pedro) is condemned to death by high court......
Pedro is accused of a murder that Diego has committed....
Pedro is arrested and no one believes his story a bout a double ....

Diego claims to be acting on orders of high court,Diego promises he will bring Pedro to recognition that he is a murderer .....
Pedro killed Diego's wife in order to keep from being guilty of his double death......
Diego confess his murders....
At this point the director stops the play and searches for the justice hall in vain...

Dürrenmatt wanted to say that every one is a potential murderer and condemned in advance...

and If one tries to Explore the Psychological Dimensions of his mind and Life ,he will be shocked to know that crime...is a human instinct
We kill others as we are always afraid to be killers one day, even if we don’t wanna kill, deep in our souls we are killers even if we didn’t know.....

In this play he is referring to the original sin ,the sinner knows he cannot be blamed for his sins if he is born a sinner and sins unavoidably because of the nature with which he is born. And it raises the question, who is to blame?
Surely not the sinner, for he had no choice in being born with a sinful nature.....
Can a man really be guilty for possessing the nature with which he is born?

In the absence of higher authority ,the human being is his own judge and jury .....
true recognition of guilt must come from within .
accepting personal guilt and embracing the consequences is the highest form of justice.which leads to personal salvation......
The description of The Stairs of the court and Statue of Justice which are worn, has a lot of symbolism for the Unfair Justice......
