Saphrona Caldwell is a 233-year-old human-vampire hybrid who maintains a quiet existence in the strangest of places: on a farm, where she raises chickens and breeds horses, pigs, and dairy cows. A far cry from the life of Gothic glamour she once lived, she has all but walked away entirely from the world into which she was born.
Her life is forever changed when she meets Mark Singleton, an immortal human whose blood is powerfully alluring and even narcotic to vampires. Though pleased to know her destined bondmate at last, Saphrona’s happiness is complicated by a request to find someone who doesn’t actually exist, Mark’s shape-shifting half-sister, and the danger posed by an individual who is not above committing arson, kidnapping, and murder.

Saphrona Caldwell is a 233 year old vampire hybrid who has spent the last 150 years wondering when her bondmate (soulmate) would finally make an appearance in her life. However, she hasn't spent her life pining away, solely waiting for that man to arrive. She spends her days tending to her farm, caring for her animals and writing vampire tell-all books under an assumed name. Saphrona is definitely not your typical vampire hybrid. She has abandoned the vampire community save for her brother Lochlan. After learning that her father, Diramid, never even tried to save her mother's life after giving birth to her, Saphrona left her vampire life behind and chose to live as normal of a life as possible, for a hybrid anyways.
Enter Mark Singleton, ex-marine, who answers an ad for a farm hand that Saphrona has placed in hopes that having a farm hand will give her the opportunity to dedicate more time to her newest novel. Upon first sight, at long last, Saphrona has found her bondmate. And Saphrona also knows that Mark is not 100% human, though what exactly he is, she does not know. When Mark arrives back at the farm with his belongings, he brings with him his beloved dog, Angel. Upon this second arrival, Saphrona senses yet another supernatural being. Angel is actually a shifter, though Saphrona isn't quite sure what Angel's connection to Mark is. After Mark turns in for the night and Saphrona is in her office doing some work, there's a knock at the door. Saphrona opens the door to find a naked young lady standing in the doorway. After getting some clothes for "Angel" and offering her a bite to eat, the two women settle in to talk. Angel is in fact Mark's sister Juliette, and Mark doesn't have a clue.
This is a story of love overcoming adversity, overcoming tragedy; love that transcends all else and comes out the victor. There is blood and sex, but how could there not be. This is a vampire story after all. I should mention that I could feel a "Twilight" vibe from Moore, and trust me, that is not a bad thing in this case. I have read some cheesy vampire novels where I've stopped and said "Oh come on!" But not with Chasing Shadows. It definitely stands on its own and does so brilliantly.
The end of Chasing Shadows left me wanting so much more and though the author has not said to me one way or another if she plans to continue the story, I feel confident that we have not heard the last Saphrona, Mark, or any of the other wonderful characters. Personally, I want more Lochlan =)
This book was EXTREMELY good. At about 11% through the book, where Saphrona and Mark have dinner for the first time, the story starts to get interesting and intriguing. I absolutely loved it. The book was action packed and it was very refreshing because I thought it was an original vampire book. I could not wait to get through the book because I wanted to see what and how things were going to happen.
I ABSOLUTELY loved the characters. They were relatable and very likeable. I loved Juliette and Lochlan. I like their chemistry together but I'm not sure if they are going to end up together because are mortal enemies. I definitely would like to know more about their happily ever after and also Saphrona and Mark's HEA as well; I couldn't get enough of the characters. I consider a book to be excellent when I shed tears because of what the characters are going through and make me laugh out loud afterwards and this book did just that. I would have liked the author to focus on writing about the characters physical appearance a little more but overall an EXCELLENT book.
AND the end, is that a certain neighbor is who chronicling Saphrona's life? I am definitely looking forward to book number 2. I pray there is a second book!
I heard about this book when I was looking at a blog of one of my favorite authors, Raine Thomas. Anyway, after I saw what she had said about the book, I knew I had to read it. So, I started hunting for it. When I couldn't find a Nook friendly copy, I asked where I could find one on Christina Moore's website. And she offered me a copy in exchange for a review.
Anyway, back to the book. I loved the story. It was different and unique. Everyone knows about vampires and werewolves, but Moore takes all that and puts a whole new spin on it. It's a new, complete, and incredible mythology.
The characters were fun, easily likable, and I found myself laughing with them. I loved Juliette and Loch, they made me laugh so hard! I loved them. While the most central characters were Saphrona and Mark, I had a heard time liking them as much as I did Juliette and Loch. I don't know why. Maybe it was Saphrona's narration and her sometimes bland narration style. But overall, I loved the story plot, it was fun and exciting. I can't wait to read the next book in this series.
Really liked this book. Can't wait to read the next one. The author has a way of making you think that you are apart of the story. I just love Mark and Saphrona. They are a great couple.
I enjoyed this book for several reasons other than your " usual" vampire story, which this is not, Casting Shadows goes far beyond what we all have in our minds as a typical vampire. The challenges Saparona has to face in her 233 years doesn't distract her from what/ whom she she wants. Truth be known waiting on the next installment is going to be hard.
