"You know those times in your life when you think it can’t get any worse...and then does? Stuck in a dead end job you hate, dumped by your girlfriend and hanging around with a bunch of losers? I wanted to change my life but didn’t realize how quickly the ground shifted without me lifting a finger. The mutating flu virus took hold of the world so quickly that not even the best medical people could predict the scale of the deadly epidemic. I was stuck in the middle of the chaos, trying to reach the relative safe haven of a yacht in Battery Park Harbor, New York, with a former hit man, a junior doctor, two Goth girls and a minor criminal for company. Thousands of vicious, animated corpses stood between us and our route to safety.”
Brett Wilde is a small town pessimist, wishing his life away in a dead end job in Pennsylvania, USA. He awakes one morning late for work and receives a phone call from a friend informing him the world has been gripped by an unknown, deadly virus. Wilde embarks on a journey with the help of a former hit man, two Goth girls and a minor criminal, trying to reach a yacht, occupied by his father in New York Harbor. The journey takes them on the hazardous route from Brynston, Pennsylvania, along the Interstate - 78 through New Jersey onto New York City.
Will Wilde and his party reach their destination unscathed?
Christian Fletcher devotes his spare time to writing short stories and novels based on genres such as horror, thrillers and mythical fantasies. He draws influences from George A. Romero, Quentin Tarrantino, Hammer Horror movies and novelists such as Richard Laymon, Dennis Wheatley and Stephen King.
Christian's stories are also inspired by his musical preferences, which can evidently be read in some of his novels. He regards his main inspirations lie with Black Sabbath, The Rolling Stones, The Pixies, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, The Smiths, The Prodigy, Echo & the Bunnymen, The Stranglers, The Clash and Motorhead, as well as specific genres, such as, Funk & Soul and Ska. The sequel to the zombie novel "Leftovers," is titled "Left Alone" and was released on Amazon on 12/24/2012. The third book in the "Left" series is titled "Left On The Brink" and released on Amazon on 05/31/2013.
I thoroughly enjoyed this lighter fast paced zombie tale/adventure with some humor thrown in and had a very hard time putting it down to go to sleep at night. I loved the characters, and especially the interaction between Smith and Brett. The small group that includes a young newbie doctor, a couple of goth girls (love Batfish!), a street smart petty criminal and a cute puppy (along with a couple of others) sets off on an adventure that kept me glued to the story and kind of wishing I had a VW van or an RV too. I came to care about the characters enough that it was upsetting to lose any. I'm not a stickler for weapons details and descriptions, and I kind of think you have to suspend some disbelief to enjoy a zombie novel anyhow, I just like to be able to get involved in a story that moves along at a nice brisk pace and keeps me rooting for the characters, which this one did nicely. I highly recommend Leftovers and am looking forward to starting the sequel, you get a whole lot of entertainment for the price.
The characters are interesting, and I thought it was great. I finished Leftovers, and I could not wait for the next one to find out what happens to Bret, Smith, and Batfish as well their furry companions. I have read many... many... many zombie genre novels and I have problems finishing some of them, but this was not one of them. I was never bored, and the inventiveness of the story was fantastic. I have read the second (also loved) and am on to the third and still loving it!! One of the best examples of why you should not always listen to reviews alone. The one negative thing I have to say is concerning some of the UK speech used by characters other than Bret. For example, the words "that lot" used to reference a group of zombies. As an American and a Pennsylvanian, I know it is not used in that manner and is only one example of several very recognizable Brit type words lol!!!! Despite my nit picking I still loved this book.
Cheap novel, but worth the pennies spent on it. Undoubtably there are better zombie books out there, but this one did hold my interest - the developing relationship between the two main characters is interesting, and although it appears to be the first in a series of books it could be read as a stand alone novel. Worth reading if you enjoy the genre
Badly written and full of cliches... Couldn't finish it, got stuck at 10% and realised that reading shouldn't be a chore... Yet finishing this book would be... There are better zombie books out there...lots of them!
Zombies, zombies, zombies. This book has great characters. It kept me on the edge of my seat often. I was left agitated at the end. All that searching for nothing! Not sure if I'll read the next ones though, zombies really creep me out.
So, so badly written! Wasn't this book edited? There were glimpses of good, but for the most part, this was a badly written, cliche filled book without an ending.
This was a good book and I basically liked the story. I had issue with the way it ended. But it creeped me out and that's what it's all about when reading a zompoc book.
