The author states up front that this was written back in 2000, before the last books of the canon series were even published, so there's a lot that's obviously going to be AU, sometimes jarringly for me. It unfortunately made it hard for me to really immerse myself when, for instance, I couldn't always keep track of which background characters (such as Sirius) were alive or dead.
Also, the emotional content and character choices the plot is built on (e.g., Pro-spy!Harry: 😭 "I must leave you, to protect you!" Dissatisfied-researcher!Hermione (after reluctantly dropping the fight): goes trailing after him when he's trying to be covert. 🙄😖) felt visibly less mature than her Sherlock-&-Watson fics I loved, written over a decade later, I believe, under the pseudonym Mad_Lori MadLori, even though I do usually prefer Harmony to most other ships for either of them.
One other thing I didn't know going in, because only the HP fandom is tagged (and I couldn't recall why the tagged character name Laura Chant seemed familiar 🤦), is that this is also a crossover with Margaret Mahy's The Changeover: A Supernatural Romance, which I read ~too many~ years ago. The concept of *making* someone magical could be really interesting to bring into conflict with the remaining Pureblood bigotry of the HP-verse, though the emphasis here was on a different angle, and the climactic confrontation struck me as a little OtT/excessively trope-y, but that may have been partly due to my aforementioned lack of immersion — and a diversion midway to (re)read something else, in the futile hope of returning to this with greater enthusiasm/ openness. Ah, well.
Tbh, my experience was more like 2.5 GR stars than three, but I'm not sure how fair that is, so I didn't round down.

This was cute, for lack of a better word.
I enjoyed the story, but it was too off canon for me to really get into it. I was too distracted by characters being alive who JK killed off in the original series to really pay attention to what was going on.
There was a lot that went right with the writing style and with the story. I enjoyed the relationships and the drama, but most of it was pretty predictable.
This was obviously a setup for the next books in the series, but I don't think I will be reading those unless the curiosity really gets to me.
Also:

One of the best fanfictions out there. A most read for any Potter fan

I read this the first time over 15 years ago. And every few years I go back for the originality, the mythology, the character building, and so much more. I wish I could buy it, its too good for over.

The writing was good. I loved how the relationship between Harry and Hermione is shown to be developing. The plot was predictable, but the way it was told made all the difference. The character development was true to the canon and I loved the the new addition to the universe - Laura (She was good and so relatable). Also, the relationship among the Ballicroft inmates were heart warming. Overall I loved the story and I'm sure gonna complete the series.
