Katherine "Kat" thought she had the perfect marriage to International Lawyer Steven Flynn. Until he tried to kill her.
Katherine was the perfect obedient wife. She would do anything for her husband.
That is, until she discovers he's the ring leader of a human trafficking organization. The action is fast and furious, the dialogue smart and the sex scenes hot.
Meet Katherine in Curiosity Killed The Kat as she goes farther and farther down the rabbit hole of political intrigue, sex, and revenge. Will she let herself be saved by love or will curiosity and a thirst for killer justice kill the Kat?
Elizabeth Nelson is a romance writer who loves to interlace reality and love with suspense and thrill. Her stories will tickle your fancy and leave you wanting more.
Believing you have the perfect life and marriage and having that can be two completely different things. So Katherine ‘Kat’ Flynn discovers about her life with the man she adored.
Married to an international lawyer, Kat was the perfect obedient wife. She did everything her husband Steven said, even when his sexual demands went beyond fantasy play of S&M into torture and abuse. She craved his attention and love and thought all was right with her world as long as she did what she was suppose to.
During a dinner outing with a partner in Steven’s law firm, Kat has a most unusual request from the partner’s date. In quiet whispers and without the men knowing, the lady ask for Kat’s help as she feared for her life.
That request puts Kat on a path of discovery. She soon learns what her husband and his partner are really up to and how dangerous it can be for her, as well as others. In addition, Kat learns what she is truly capable of.
CURIOSITY KILLED THE KAT is a quick read with a steady pace that holds your attention from the first paragraph. While you have a glimmer of what Steven is up to, the suspense and intrigue is well worth finding out all the details. The story is filled with action, passion, and inspiration as Kat emerges to find her way.
Author Elizabeth Nelson has crafted realistic characters and combined them with a compelling plot that unfortunately still exist in today’s headlines. She has designed her protagonist with flaws making her journey more plausible. The dialogue is well written and flows smoothly.
This is one read that is filled with surprises, suspense, intrigue, and hope.
FTC Full Disclosure - An eBook copy of this title was sent to me as part of the author’s blog tour in hopes I would review it. However, receiving the complimentary copy did not influence my review.
The premise is fantastic - Stepford wife realizes her marriage is a lie and that her husband is involved in human trafficking. Unfortunately, the author is more interested in detailing rough sex than in developing the plot. The book literally stops where the cover blurb does. A woman discovers her husband is involved in human trafficking - end of book. Character development is minimal and thus unbelievable. I couldn't buy that this subservient wife literally woke up one day and decided to completely throw her old life away.
How do you know an author got it right? When you can't put it down and you want more. That is what Elizabeth Nelson gave me in Curiosity Killed the Kat.
This is the story of Katherine who found her Prince Charming. To the reader and Kat's mother, he is a control freak with rough sexual desires. To Kat, he is all she ever wanted until one night at dinner with his boss and the man's date. Katherine's eyes are opened then and all she can feel is horror and shock. Then her husband does the one thing that will change his own life forever: he tries to kill his wife. Revenge is now on the table.
What did I like about this book? It was relatively short. That was only because I needed to lose myself in a story that wouldn't last long. Chaotic life with kids and such will do that to you. But what did I love the most? The fact that I couldn't just stop at a chapter ending. I had to move on, and the ending had me quickly putting the next book on my wish list. I have to follow this now.
Ms. Nelson is an excellent writer. She could have added so many things to lengthen it, but that would have taken away from the story. It was fast paced and kept the reader glued to the pages. Her ability to connect the reader to the character is amazing, too. From the beginning, I knew what Katherine's husband was though not exactly what he was doing beyond his relationship with her. I wanted to scream and yell at her to run, but I could also see how it meant so much to her. Her dreams were coming true. I wanted her to be happy yet safe. It was quite a dilemma and this is just a fictional character.
I do need to warn you that there are a few explicit scenes between Katherine and her husband. These are not needless sex scenes to sell the book. Trust me. They are there to show you the true picture of their relationship and the horror waiting on her. I have to also applaud Ms. Nelson in that. She didn't just write an explicit scene. She used that scene to reveal so much more of the characters that you really cannot skip them in this book. They are that crucial.
Looking for a short read that is intense, involving, and more than does the job of entertaining you? This book of revenge is the one for you. Check it out and put the rest of the Katherine Flynn series on your to read list.
Note: This book was provided as part of a book tour with no expectation of a positive review.
Katherine fell for her husband at first sight and quickly let his love consume her. Although she understands his domineering ways would be a turn off to some, she accepts their marriage for what it is. But is she being played for a fool?
During a business dinner with her husband's boss, something seems amiss. She can't shake it, and she can't walk away. When she decides to snoop around for more information, her world turns upside down. Everything she thought she could accept about her life and her husband starts to unravel. Her life hangs in the balance.
This is a quick read, full of intense situations and page-turning events. Katherine is a believable character. Even as the reader wonders about her choices, she admits to her flawed thinking. She blames love. Usually I want a woman to be stronger right out of the gate, but Katherine's open about her thoughts and she starts to find her strength by the end. Will it be too late?
Unfortunately, I have no idea, because this book ends on a major cliffhanger. The book is billed as Part One of a series, so I wasn't completely shocked, but the ending still felt sudden and rushed. Because the book is short, a mere 120 pages, the characters weren't as developed as I like. Yet, I must admit, I'm curious to read the next book and find out what happens. Or to be more honest, I want to read the next book to see Katherine grow even stronger and to see her husband get what's coming to him.
It's worth noting, too, that there are some uncomfortable intimate scenes between Katherine and her husband. Although I believe the scenes were necessary to show Katherine's confusion and her husband's nature, they were still hard to read.
I recommend this book to readers who enjoy a story that starts moving from page one and those who appreciate a flawed but memorable female main character.
Note: I received a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review.
What would it take for one woman to break free of the chains that bind her in degradation? How can she escape the oppression of a marriage that she had chosen, but which has slowly turned into a punitive, controlled existence? Realization seemingly breaks through in a social situation with her husband's boss that seems odd. Not quite right. And when Katherine Flynn begins to investigate, dangers surround her until she is fleeing for her life.
Oppression, addiction, obsession: these themes resonate throughout "Curiosity Killed The Kat: Book 1 (A Katherine Flynn Novel)." A short novella, we hold our breath throughout the pages as Kat stumbles upon first one, then another clue in her search for what is going on behind the facade of her husband's business.
The pacing is taut, yet controlled, as we follow our characters through the morass of their fear, and just when we think they have reached freedom, something happens to bring even greater danger. What can Kat do to save herself and her new friend? Will her husband and his boss continue to escape the consequences of their actions?
At the end, we are left wondering, as this is the first in a series of books in the Katherine Flynn series.
Can you say cliffhanger?
I enjoyed the story and want to know what will happen to Kat next. Further editing might be advisable, as a few grammatical errors distracted me. Nevertheless, I recommend this story and the series for those who enjoy suspense thrillers with sexual content. Four stars.
Katherine believed she had met Prince Charming, when she met Steven Flynn. He encompassed everything in a man that she had wished for, his pursuit was relentless, his vow of love unbreakable until he tried to kill her. Katherine was molded into the perfect wife for fast rising international lawyer, but everything Katherine thought she knew about her husband comes crumbling down around her, the one thing that Steven never counted on from Katherine, the ever biddable wife, was revenge.
The first book in an exciting new series by Elizabeth Nelson. Katherine Flynn you see morph from a bright young woman to a shadow of her former self. I thought this was action packed and eagerly the next chapter in Katherine’s story.
This book is fantastic, and it is a quality read. It really looks at the deception that can happen between a man and wife. The real crux of the story revolves around the wife and who she is despite her husband's scandal. It shows the wife's innocence, even as she struggles to detach from a life of madness that her husband has created. This is an exciting book, and I think it empowers women. The wife, Kat, is someone many people will understand. I absolutely love the last line of the book: "To get the revenge I deserved all I had to do was live." Kat is dignity, grace, and strength -- personified.
I couldn't decide between a two or a three star & am giving the Author the chance to redeem herself in her 2nd book ... I hope it's better than the first or I don't think I'll be able to read the third. I found this book lacking in excitement & everything seemed rushed. More detail & a loner storyline would have probably made the book interesting. Would have been more enjoyable if the author had gone into more depths at describing the characters & possibly their background ... Sorry but first book = slightly boring Curiosity almost killed ME reading this ....
This was a very explosive book. I couldn' t put it down. I'm glad I had the chance to get into the trilogy, thanks to winning the Goodreads giveaway. I found it refreshing and was immediately drawn in from the beginning. There was passion, action, suspense, and I couldn' t get through the pages fast enough. I have already purchased the last to books in the trilogy. I can' t wait to find out how it ends. Elizabeth Nelson will definitely be on watch list.
This is part one of three. It is advertised as such, so no shortfall there. Due to its partial status, there is an open ended finish to "wet" the appetite and interest of reader so they get the future installments. Which, is fine too as advertised as part one.
The story :
A submissive wife stumbles into marital mire while at dinner one eve (several years into her marriage). A dinner companion asks for her assistance and a whole new world opens before her eyes. She does a bit of investigation and winds up in peril of epic proportions.
The premise is common. This author has a bit of a unique spin on her version which is good. The head players are not seedy underworld types typically read about (they are professional white collar men). While I am certain there are plenty of same in real world, typical novels I have read relate to seedy slimey types who keep to shadows and darkness. So that bit was newer to me.
The heroine of the tale is fragile from her years under a controlling husband. In this installment we meet her, get her background and the author sets up foundation of relationship so we can understand the trepidation and angst Kat has with doing anything that is not "allowed " or will displease.
There is graphic sexual content and vulgar contexts used to relate the story. I found no issue with such as the character is created (in large part) due to her dominant and abusive man. I just mention such for others to know.
The sex scenes had some issues. There were two that are impossible to manage as written. As sex was a huge portion of the arc, it would seem that the scenes would have been believable and possible (even if only for a small, select, limber portion of population) . I have only read one other book (recently) wherein sex was such an important device and then written so badly - I reduced a star for this issue as well.
This should have come with a warning. I am not into the sex everywhere kind of novel. After encountering the first steamy scene I was a bit grossed out. After the second I lost interest in the novel altogether. I'm sure there is an audience that finds this appealing, but I would not have downloaded the book in the first place if there was any kind of forewarning.
What do you do when you find out your husband has lied for the seven years of your marriage? You find out he is involved in people trafficking to fund his effort to become a senator and then he tries to kill you. What you do, is swear revenge and vow to kill him
When I first got this book I thought that it would be just a simple mystery. It's not. The author took it to another level. It builds up into an intensive story about deception and finding freedom.
Kat is subservient when it comes to her husband Steven. It annoys me that she allows him to push her around the way he does. If he says jump she says how high. If he says run she says how far. This controlling behavior carries over into the bedroom. It is a typical Dom and Sub relationship. Kat has had her feel. She wants a better life. It takes seeing someone in danger to give Katherine the push she needs to stand up. She risks it all including her life, to save herself and the young woman she met. In the process she gets tangled in a weave of deception that runs deep.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Seeing how Kat's relationship with Steven started, allows you the chance to emotionally connect with her. To most people she would seem like a submissive person but on the inside she was seeking freedom. I was happy when Kat finally found her courage to escape Steven. I was rooting for her all the way and getting nervous that she would get caught.
I knew that Steven was up to no good but I didn't expect him to be as evil as he is. He is more worried about working his way up the political ladder than all the people he may step on on his way up. He seems to take cues from his boss Charlie on how to break the law and screw people over. I wonder who really pulls the strings in that relationship. Steven seems like he is waiting it out so he can stab Charlie in the back. Either way if you leave them alone long enough they are bound to do each other in.
The suspense is high in this book. You are not sure what will happen next. Will Kat make it? Will she be able to rescue Sana and Sandra from Charlie and Steven? The author wrote a great story. It is short but full of action and great storytelling. There is a cliffhanger at the end of this book. I was a little bummed with that but I know that it fits with the story and keeps up the suspense.
Overall I loved this book. I can't wait to read the rest of the series. I have to know what will happen with Kat. I recommend this book. Due to violence and sex scenes this is recommended for ages 18+.
Disclaimer: I received this book as part of a book tour for the purposes of an unbiased review.
This story was really thrilling. It did not stop once it really got started. And it didn’t take long to get started either. The ups and downs don’t really stop for Katherine and she finds herself in situations that not many would be able to get out of. She’s smart and although she makes a few mistakes she has the wits to mostly get out of them. Mostly. I do want to find out what happens because this does end with a major cliffhanger. You are literally hanging on with your fingernails!
But, I’m also a little thrown off by Kat. I don’t want to give any spoilers but she goes from VERY compliant and wanting to please her husband to the complete opposite in the span of a day. Literally she’s like a sex slave for her husband. I can see why she did but I guess it would make more sense to me if it took a bit more. Maybe not much more because the situations she starts finding herself in are dire! I like Kat, really I do, I just don’t understand her. People don’t normally change this easily. That said though, sometimes it just takes finding your inner strength and she totally finds hers!
The rest of the characters were just kind of supporting characters and because we are seeing this through Katherine’s eyes we sadly don’t get to see much of any other character. I can’t wait to find out more about her husband. He seems like a real jackass but maybe, just maybe there’s more to him. I really hope so. I don’t have my hopes up too high though. He really is a crazy person that lets ambition be a priority over everything, including his love (was it love?!!) for his wife.
The sex scenes were hot! If you are not into a bit of graphic, intense sex, I’d say maybe this book isn’t for you. Although there’s not much of it, the sex that’s in here borders on erotica. Whew… is it hot in here?
So, I was a little thrown but it is a good story. It’s intriguing and it’s a really fast read. It left me curious with what was going to happen next! Katherine maybe changed fast but she did it to get out of her rut and then she HAD to change to survive!
This was a quick read for me, but honestly, it was probably quicker than I wanted it to be, because I was just reading so fast, because this story is pretty good! Katherine aka 'Kat' is one character that I cannot wait to read more about in the next two books, because here, well, she is in a submissive role, and living a passive like life with her now wealthy husband of seven years. Steven, her husband, is the only guy she has really been with, and has stuck by his side since she was 19 years old. Now at around 26, there is one evening that she and Steven are meeting with his Boss, and he has a guest that makes Katherine question so much, including Steven's Job, and their marriage. She finally decides to change something about herself, and just wait and read, because I think you definitely see Katherine grow, from an obedient wife, who does love her husband, to someone that is unrecognizable to Steven, so if you like a Suspenseful, Romantic, Sexy (Yes there are some Sex scenes here) story, then this Novel is for you!
I have really mixed feeling about this book. When I read the description about the book, I was excited to read it. It sounded really interesting. Imagine finding out the man you were married to for so long wasn't who you thought he was. How would you handle that? Kat finds out some secrets about her husband and is shocked to learn what kind of business he is running on the side.
The story had great potential The problem I had with it was the length. It was really short. A little research shows that the book is the first in a trilogy and ends with a big cliff hanger. If the other books are equally as short, I wonder why the three books weren't rolled into one. Had they been, I think I would have enjoyed the story more and I would have believed Kat's transition out of role of abused wife a bit more. Because the book was so short, there wasn't time for a lot of story development. Essentially, it felt all a bit rushed.
It has gotten great reviews, so give it a try and see what you think.
This is a somewhat of a short story, that in a way could easily be described as a novella. It reminded me of Fifty Shades of Grey, at least a version where Anastasia decides to stand up for herself and pay Christian Grey back for his actions.
I wasn't a huge fan of the actual writing in this, especially the moments of dialogue. (And I didn't mind the writing in Fifty if that means something to you.) But really did enjoy the actual story, and thought it was a fun ride.
The end of this is very sudden, and in some ways I think it would have worked better if this entire book was only first first part of a whole novel. But I do think there is a lot of potential here, and I would be curious to see where Nelson takes Kat's story to next.
When you’re 19 and meet the man you are going to marry, you think you’re set for life. That was Katherine’s plan. She had Steven to cook for, clean for and to obey. That’s right. Kat was very careful to do anything she could to make Steven happy. Anything. It took the death of a young woman to make her sit back and reevaluate her existence. What she saw did not make her happy and suddenly, she knew why her mother had never liked her choice of husband, Steven was an abuser, a dominant personality and, overall, he was an asshole. This small book really caught me up and I was hoping Kat did the right things because the chances of her not being around to tell the tale were pretty good if she didn’t. Human trafficking, spousal abuse, sex slaves -it has it all and in plain black and white for us to judge. Does Kat survive? You’ll have to read it to know and I hope you do because it has such great potential
Told in first person, Curiosity Killed The Kat was well done. Author has a good voice, the story flows nicely, and shares an “author’s message,” shedding light on human trafficking. A good story, intriguing, well written. Good characters. Compelling. And then it stops at about the same point where the promotional blurbs do. Kat learns the horrible truth, then it stops. I don’t mean it stops without properly wrapping things up, I mean abruptly, like at the end of what should be chapter 3 or 5 or 8 with ten more to go. I guess that’s where the “Book 1” comes into play. For me, that should mean a continuing story in a series, not the middle and end to come in books 2 and 3. I like the idea of hinting at more to come; there may be a sequel, but not if you want to know how the story ends. That being said, I couldn’t give it better than a two. I don't think the reader gets more than 2/5 of a book.
So glad I won this book. Will be purchasing the next book in the series asap because my heart is still racing. Katherine at first drove me a little crazy with her submissive, subserveant attitude towards her perfect life, marriage, and Adonis of a husband. It interested me that Katherine became bored because even with kinky, don't know what's coming next kinda sex, that life had to get old. Theres a reason there's a saying, Careful what you wish for!! Katherine got jolted out of her comfy life and into the adventure of a lifetime. How long that lifetime would be now lay in the hands of her husband Steven and his creepy business partner Charles. This is an edge of your seat thriller and you cant wait for what's next. Elizabeth did an amazing job developing the characters and story. Again I am beyond glad I read this book and strongly recommend it.
My thoughts: This is a fast read. The writing is descriptive and the character building is top notch. It was almost as if I could feel how slimy Kat thought her husband's boss was. I know I disliked her husband from the go, and he never redeemed himself (obviously). The plot was intriguing, but the story could have been fleshed out a bit more. It was almost as if we were running through the story, it's fast paced, only to end up dangling at the edge of the cliff that becomes the ending. I am not saying that it's bad, just that I wanted more story. It is well written and entertaining. Worth the read for certain. Will be looking forward to reading both book 2 and book 3 which are already out.
What do I think? Well, I have mixed feelings with this book. First, let me say that it is very well written. The story was gripping & the characters engaging. On the whole, I loved it. However, I felt there was a lot of very graphic (and very unnecessary) sex. It almost pushed to the point of being erotica versus a thriller. I understand that one of the main characters is suppose to be a very "sick puppy" with bizarre sexual cravings, but I feel the writer could have conveyed that without having to cross the line into trashy.
Downloaded as a free book for my Ipad, this is billed as book one there are two others that follow. It is very short and therefore quick to finish. It moves along at a fast pace and changes from an explicit sexual novel to a thriller.
This book ends leaving me wanting to read the other two.
The author is classified as a romance writer but I wouldn't have classified this as a romance short story.
This book could have been much better if it were longer. It would have given the author room to develop the characters and tell their stories much better. It was really shallow. Stepford wife finds out husband is not so perfect. She rebels and finds out that he is not someone to be messed with. The end. Oh yea, stay tuned for book 2 where she will exact her revenge.
I had this book on my TBR list and I ended up winning a copy of the book. It was a quick read for me mainly because I couldn't put the book down. I will be purchasing the next book in the series. I can't wait to see how it ends!
Short and you get left hanging,... It is not a book!! It is part 1 out of 3 and the second and third are ridiculously expensive!! It should be one book, than it would be amazind, but like that, not so much!!
In this short story Katherine discovers her life with her husband is all a lie. I don't want to give away what happens. It was a great read. It left me on the edge of my seat and waiting for book 2. Very suspenseful and nail biting.
This book was okay; very crass in parts. I didn't find it very tense and much seemed to conveniently go in favor of the protagonist. I imagine there will be a sequel since the reader is merely left hanging.
