This book has a good mix of technical details as well as inspiration? assurance? I'm not sure how I'd put it, but Galloway's book has reeducated me on a lot of running myths. First, it's okay to slow down. As long as you're dedicated and you don't always do the least amount possible, it's okay to take your time and build up to the muscles and endurance you need for longer runs. Also, it's most important to avoid injury. You can't run if you're injured.

Anyway, there are several training programs and explanations of speed training, fartleks, tempo runs, etc. He also has exercises to help strengthen certain muscles to help avoid injury as well as a discussion of what shoes to buy and different ways to lace them.

If I had any complaint, it would be on the diet section, but, for the most part, this is an insightful and easy to read book that includes just about anything and everything you need to know to be a better runner. I'm even going to keep it handy on the shelf for when I need to look up a particular.

Had this one for a minute, found it useful. It gets mocked by advanced runners but it offers good tips on how to structure training when you're a beginner with no idea what to do. Reminds you to slow down, avoiding junk miles stuck in the gray zone between aerobic base building and speed training. Take it with a pinch of salt and supplement with other sources of information: some of the claims on stretching are the exact opposite of what my PT told me after an injury.

Galloway’s Book on Running by Jeff Galloway is probably the fourth book that I picked up and put back down in my process of finding a book about running. I have found myself rather pudgy recently, and I needed to get into shape. I absolutely hate gyms though; they make me feel like a damn hamster. So, I decided to grab some running shoes and start out on the road. However, as a complete and utter nerd, I like to read and research everything I do, so I had to find a book to read on the subject. As said, though, I picked this book and put it back down based on the relatively faded cover the book sported. Then I fell upon it again at a local library and tossed it into a pile of other Running books.
Rather to my surprise, after reading ten or so pages of each book, I found myself returning to this one. This book produced what all of the other books I had chosen were trying to produce: an approachable introduction to running as a hobby or a sport. Where some books tended to push toward being a competitive marathoner (something I never intend to be), this book offered a little more for beginners without being overly simplistic. Some of the “beginner” books were just very simple with very little practical tips and way more basic physiology than I wanted (especially as someone with a much more advanced knowledge of physiology).
The Run-Walk-Run method that Galloway introduces is perfect for a beginning runner like myself. It gives us permission to walk and take it slow, so that I’m not out there half running with my shins and lungs on fire, feeling too guilty to stop and walk, even though I could walk faster than I was actually running. When I picked up this idea of walking and running, my miles almost doubled (granted from 1.5 to around 3 each go), and my time even improved. Previously, when I would set out with my awkward half run, I would get discouraged and have to fight myself tooth and nail to even go three times a day. With this method, I am itching to go everyday (though keeping to Galloway’s prescription of rest between runs).
An advanced runner may not find exactly everything that he or she would want from a book on running, but there are some concepts and recommendations in the pages for marathoners and long distance runners. These chapters seem to be quite basic, but I think this book sets out first and foremost to be an introduction book for beginners, and second to be sort of a basic handbook for a lifetime of running. In this effort, the book excels. On top of beginner’s advice on the act of running, it gives good basic information of injuries, shoes, diet, and various other associated topics without becoming too exhaustive.
This is a great book for beginners, and since it was written to make running accessible to new runners, I give it five stars. Some further along in the process may feel it has some things lacking, and I think it is lacking in the same way that a Introduction to World History is lacking in the finer nuances of the Russian Empire’s downfall as related to British sea supremacy. However, this book hits spot on for a runner like myself, and I recommend it to anyone who wants to run, but thinks they cannot. Galloway will at least get you on the road.

This is a fabulous book for anyone who wants to start running. There is a lot of practical advice for runners at every level.

One of the things that I love about this book is that his run/walk method really gives a new perspective on running. I always thought you had to run continuously, full out. If I had had Galloway's perspective when I was young, perhaps gym class would have been a less painful experience.

On the other hand, there is still great advice for my hard core running friends.

The bottom line is that for someone like me, who had been "allergic" to running for 30 years, it made doing a half marathon achievable. I have now done 6 half marathons, using the Gallaway method, and yet I still come back to this book and find new nuggets of wisdom to apply to running.

4/10 - ujdzie. "Bieganie metodą Gallowaya" to w skrócie: biegnij i idź na przemian, a rekordy same z nieba Ci spadną.

Score: 3.25 - I think this is a good but dated introduction to the world of running. I’ll be interested in looking at the other additions of this book to see the changes. It would also be interesting to compare it to other modern running books. I did also like some of the humor in the book. Not sure if that was intentional or not.

This being the first book that I’ve read on running, honestly I don’t have a basis to compare it with. But what stood out to me is the detailed explanation of various subparts(e.g. weekly optimal mileage, speed work, endurance work, nutrition, footwear, injury prevention/treatment and even psychological aspects) of Jeff Galloway’s training plan. Theories or facts always make more sense to me when presented with scientific evidence, and good for me that JG focused on exactly that. Overall, it has been a very educating (and also motivating) read for me.

Jeff's run/walk plan helped me transform from being an occassional runner who constantly struggled to a consistent runner who really enjoys running.

I was stuck and this book gave me a strategy and plant to take my running to the next level. Prior to this book, I would simply go out and run for 30 minutes for a mile or two. I struggled to run even a mile. I would run until I couldn't breathe and then walk for a couple minutes and repeat. His explanations about why run/walk works are excellent and his training plans took me from not being able to run a mile to being able to finish a 10K without walking (over a year or so).

The one struggle I had with this book is that I don't think he did a good job explaining how to go from run/walk to only run. I ended up using a Hal Higdon 5K plan to help with that part. I would not let that hold you back from reading this book or following his training plans if you want to run a 5k/10k/half/marathon. When I tackle a new distance I come back to his run/walk strategy to help me put on the mileage. His strategy really does work and will give you the ability to finish the race.

As a beginning runner, I learned SO much from this book! I love the stress on remaining injury free, how to improve and not kill yourself, the proper things to eat, how the body works as a result of running from muscles and bones and weight loss. This is a great book for runners just starting out. I am so glad I read it a few months into my running. It inspired me and gave me strength to get through some tough times with running and let me know that I am doing well and I love that I have tips to keep in mind to keep my body as injury free as possible.

my stars may go up depending on my half-marathon time in September. I really like his training ideas and it has given me permission to not feel like I have to punish myself all the time to get better. His training style has helped make my running more enjoyable and relaxed. And accoring to Galloway, I should still get faster so . . . to be continued. and I know you all love the cover picture Whoot! whoot!

Terrific book on running. Love Galloway's training programs -- effective, but prevent injury. But why does it have to have such a dorky cover? Jesus, Jeff, you're making me look bad.

A book I read this year that paired me with all the right tools for a marathoner in training, including successful runner’s statistics and their own best strategies on how to attain and supercede their best!

This book is one I framed for myself a page from. I think it was 105 or close: this part was all about timing in a run for a marathoner and their marathon goals. For example, 10 miles one week and 25 the next, and getting the run back to basic for the individual the next days that are meant to be the runner hearing up for the race: the marathon of course. I have loved talking to not just my dad but many other runners since then, not to mention passing by 100s of them at least on my 26.2 route through the marathon big race event in the capital of Connecticut which is Hartford! Great day and we also had amazing weather on my marathon day.

Enjoy this book and I hope you’ll read this author. It reminded me to be the best runner I can be at all steps before the race, and from the book, I discovered too that each day in passing leading up and walking away from the day was better and more informed than the last. We are informed by what drives us forward. Be someone that can, and your life will be brighter for it.

Thank you Jeff Galloway for Galloway’s book on running. Let’s go for a run.

Experienced people often feel they have nothing left to learn on a subject. "Galloway's Book on Running" shows that there is always something we can learn or be reminded of. Although he is now famous for his Run-Walk-Run method, this book does not go into specific run-walk intervals and instead covers a wider range of topics: rest days, nutrition, shoes, running plans, injury, and racing. In the Nutrition chapter, Mr. Galloway shared his negative experience loading up on carbs the night before a race. This dispels a commonly held assumption about pre-race eats. His wife, a nutritionist and runner, wrote a chapter on Women Running which included good reminders: pregnant women need to be careful to not overheat during a run for their baby's safety, and you can still be fertile during intense training that causes missed periods. I would recommend "Galloway's Book" to newbies and anyone who used to run high school track or cross country thinking about returning to running years later. There are many things the high school coach may not have covered which would make running in middle age more enjoyable and doable than expected.

I read the first edition, which was self-published by Jeff. Whereas, Jim Fixx’s book got me running, this more practical book gave me the usable knowledge to train and get faster. Chock full of tips and advice, Jeff is a great coach - knowledgeable and approachable. This book is not an advanced training manual, it’s a beginner’s guide on how to make the most of the sport of running. It’s a good first step before getting into more technical training books. As a fellow Atlantan, we’re lucky to have Jeff in our community (his Phidippides running stores, races, and training programs).

- skriet,soļot,skriet metode;
