Do you have an object of obsession? For Lindsey, her obsession is the deadly sexy Rhys, who makes her toes curl, her temperature rise, and other parts of her body react beyond her control. Rhys always avoided emotional attachments to women…until Lindsey; but a dark family secret keeps Rhys from giving Lindsey the commitment she deserves. Lindsey discovers Rhys's secret the hard way while her own dark past occasionally rears its ugly head. Laced with laugh out loud humor and steamy moments, follow Lindsey as she collects pieces of Rhys in her quest to find the whole man.
L.D. Davis is a New York Times Bestselling author residing on the east coast of the United States with her family, two cats, and fish. She enjoys wine, audio books, bursting into song like a Disney character, and lounging on the beach.
Except for all the details on making out or having sex with Rhys and how he makes her leak like a broken faucet, Lindsey's first person POV narrative mostly skims over everything else in her life; abusive ex-husband, her marketing job, co-workers, her gardening, her other dates, etc. Rhys seems to be the main focus of her attention but I do not find him to be that interesting.
It's too bad because I think Lindsey is a very funny and independent heroine who often sells herself short and is unfortunately paired off with a boring romantic hero.
Hmmmm, the first thought that comes to mind as my poor brain disengages from this one is HOT MESS! This story is all over the place, starting with the sarcastic, snarky (two of my favorite characteristics, I might add) and strong willed Lindsey who's recently divorced her husband because he beat her on a daily basis for four years, but still lets him come and go as he pleases because she hasn't had the damn locks changed. Don't be that girl, Lindsey! You're better than that! Then there's Rhys, the emotionally unavailable hottie who finds himself falling in love with Ms. Lindsey but keeping her at arms length because of some mysterious "piece" of information from his past. Get how I used the word "piece" there so it corresponds with the title? The author made sure I caught that in the book, too. These two love each other but she won't force a commitment, even though he's not sleeping around, and he's not even willing to entertain the idea of a relationship other than introducing her as his "very good friend." I could see where this was going pretty early on, but the author threw in a couple of curveballs I didn't expect and I'm just not sure they worked for me. There are other issues involving her ex, his exs and at times it felt like too much was going on with nothing really happening.
What I absolutely loved about this book was Lindsey. More to the point, Lindsey talking to just about anyone. As mentioned before, she's sarcastic and witty without ever coming off bitch-like and I want her for my new best friend. Even if it did take her a year and a half to change those damn locks. I'm a total sucker for good banter and this book definitely delivered. That being said, the sarcastic humor wasn't quite enough to get it out of the "meh" to "it's alright, I guess" range for me. It was enough for me to bump it from a 2 star rating to a 3 star.
I really enjoyed this story. Snarky snarky snarky! Loves the character development and omg the grandma. Life would never be boring if we all had a grandma like that! My ass would be huge!! Love how the story ends and actually didn't want it to be over. This author holds so much promise with her creativity and fantastic storytelling abilities. The resilience of the characters is amazing. I'm amazed! It was nice to have a female character that despite her past came shining through and also embraced her physical characteristics. See a girl can love food and feel sexy in Victoria's Secret!! ;). I do wish there was more backstory for Rhys but I'm glad we got a little bit in the end to help understand his choices. Thanks again for another great story. Looking forward to more from Mrs Davis.
I liked this one more than I thought I would! It started off a little shaky for me. Things seemed to happen too fast and the humor was a bit campy. But, I kept reading and soon came to love Lindsey & Rhys, and all their cheesiness! The way the ending was written got a little weird for me. It was all told in fast-forward and flashbacks. I would have liked it more if the story was just told as it happened-in order. Either way, I still enjoyed it and will read more from this author!
Do you ever read a book and get so frustrated with the unrealized potential that you grit your teeth? I. Hate. Teeth-gritting. The sound is worse than anything else in the entire world...it makes me so violently uncomfortable that my body is compelled to do some type of disjointed little shimmy to escape the moment. I shimmied so many times while reading this book that it almost appeared as if I had developed a seizure disorder.
If I hadn't read "Accidentally On Purpose", by this author (L. D. Davis), prior to reading this book, I probably would have enjoyed it much more. Why is that, you ask? Well, all of the things that made that book so wonderful were still visible in "Pieces of Rhys", but they were watered down, hurried. It seems as if the book was either hacked in half during editing, or a bare-bones version of a great story was published before any depth could be added. Honestly, I should've given it 2 stars instead of 3 but I like the author so much that I'm donating one star to her from my "Don't Make the Same Mistake Again" Fund.
L. D. Davis is a great story-teller and a great author. She creates characters that jump to life on the page; you can't help but to connect with them and their story. The humor, wit, sarcasm, snark, or whatever else you want to call it, is perfect...it is well-delivered in smooth dialog and is laugh-out-loud funny.
Lindsey was an enjoyable main character; funny, smart, strong-ish (I'll explain in a minute), determined, and self-assured (sort-of, again I'll explain in a minute). She is just the type of main character I enjoy reading about, she goes after what she wants and doesn't take herself too seriously in the process. HOWEVER...
This is the point where I explain my waffling from above. This is also one of the many things that led to moments of teeth-gritting and body shimmying. There were some very odd inconsistencies with Lindsey's character that frustrated me throughout the book. The most obvious is her grudging acceptance of having her abusive ex-husband show up in her house frequently, without taking steps to prevent it!! Hmmmm, abusive during the marriage, breaking into her house, stealing and destroying her property, yeah...I can see how anyone would be lackadaisical about that...no chance for life-threatening violence there. Not only that but Lindsey isn't exactly the stereotypical abuse victim. She's very self-assured and practical, even recognizing and being comfortable with a less than perfect physical appearance. Also, she's very social and engaging; throwing a big party and going out on numerous blind dates. But the most disturbing is that after escaping a physically abusive relationship after several years, not only is future contact with the abuser unrealistic, I find it hard to believe the victim would be so antagonistic toward the abuser.
My other issue with this book is the abruptness, leading to the majority of the teeth-gritting/pseudo-seizure shimmies. It had so much potential and it's not as if Ms. Davis doesn't know how to create great characters and dialog around her storyline. Why the rush? I have the feeling that even Lindsey's character inconsistencies would have made sense if the story had been more developed.
The other characters weren't developed very much at all. I get that we're trying to build some mystery about why Rhys is afraid of commitment, but surely he is more than a 'hottie' that is great in bed. I mean, how shallow is this 'love'? I actually felt more sexual tension and excitement with the relationship between Lindsey and Ignacio.
Well, I still really like this author even though I am a bit disappointed with this book. I look forward to checking out her work in the future. This is only her second book, after all...there are bound to be a few stumbles in the careers of even the most prolific authors!!
I wanted to like Pieces of Rhys. I really did. It just got to be way too ridiculous for me.
For starters...the cover. What the what is that load of garbage? One of the worst covers of any book I've read this year. Is she hiding? Is she 12 years old? Is that her brother? It makes no sense.
It started off pretty well and was slightly humorous, though I quickly became annoyed at the many descriptions of what Rhys did to her panties and how obsessed she was with him. Their first encounter also didn't really make any sense and felt unnatural. Why was he interested in her? (I can't even remember her name and I just read this. That's how minimal of an impact this book had on me.) By all accounts she was pretty damaged, didn't really have a relationship with Rhys prior to it besides her worshipping him from afar, and she continues to describe herself in unflattering ways. She has an abusive ex-husband, Rhys is an admitted player (which we don't know until they have been dating for awhile) and their chemistry was non-existant.
Probably the most annoying, fist clenching, teeth gritting, eye rolling thing about this whole book was how she kept trying to get him to admit that he loves her. Who does that? Because everyone knows the quickest way to get a ring on your finger is to force an admitted player to say that he loves you, when he himself has never declared those intentions. Right? Oh yeah, wait, that NEVER works.
The ending was too pat, felt like it was trying too hard to tie up loose ends while also ending the book on a bang and just flat out didn't match the rest of the story. I wanted to like Pieces of Rhys, it just wasn't in me. Though I shouldn't be suprised as I also read Accidentally on Purpose and had pretty much the same feelings about that book. I think I'm through reading L.D. Davis, even if the books are only $.99 on kindle.
A weak 2 stars, at least I powered through and finished the damn thing.
I picked this book as sort of a filler, you know, when you're in between books that you are intending to read. I can say, I'm glad I actually chose to read this book.
The story is nothing special really -- girl likes boy, but thinks she's could never get him to notice her especially since boy is hot and has women falling all over themselves for him -- you get my drift. I felt that the story wasn't as tight as it should be especially when it comes to the heroine's relationship with her ex-husband.
But -- a big BUT -- the characters are hilarious. I was laughing out loud so many times. Seriously, I haven't laughed so hard reading a book since Mr. Perfect but there was I was. Lindsey, our heroine, is laugh out loud funny. She's snarky, sarcastic and fun. She may have endured an abusive relationship with her ex-husband but she never lost her sense of humor. Her internal dialog is one of the funniest I've read in long while. And then, there's Lindsey's grandmother. Boy, she's sassy and has some of the funniest lines in the book. I love all the supporting characters in this book. L.D. Davis sure knows how to write laugh out loud, fun characters.
Aside from the whole Gary thing, my other gripe in this book is Rhys. I felt that his character could have been explored more. Even the revelation of the big secret he's supposed to be hiding was anticlimactic. But overall, he's a very sympathetic character.
The ending was a little too quick for me and again, anticlimactic. I felt kinda of cheated and yeah, I would have wanted an epilogue. I'm a sucker for those. But all in all, this book is far from a disappointment. I would definitely be on a look-out for more from this author.
After reading the Accidentally On Purpose series by this author I decided I needed to read everything she ever published !
Pieces of Rhys is a short story under 100 pages . So keep that in mind when you get this book. LD Davis does not disappoint however I enjoy reading novellas but sometimes they don't end well because they leave readers with lots of questions. Pieces of Rhys did not fall short at all.
Rhys and Lindsey are coworkers with lots of sexual tension . Lindsey is newly divorced and has not the best self esteem . She is very funny and has some quick come back , one liner jokes that will def have you laughing while reading . But one thing Lindsey wants is Rhys. He wants her to ! Lindsey is very surprised by this . Not just because of her self esteem issues but Rhys is the office piece of meat and Lindsey doesn't look anything like the girls he typically goes for . Rhys does a good job at reassuring Lindsay that she's the only one he wants . But the one thing he can't give her is a full commitment .
This story was so good reading how all the pieces came together and why Rhys struggled with his commitment issues. Even though this book was a novella I felt like we got a full story . Lots of angst , steamy scenes , drama , romance and realistic characters. Of course I am a greedy reader and would love for the author to expand on the story . :-)
One thing about this book the editing needed some work. A few paragraphs were repeated and misspelled words . Also I think a new cover would do this book major justice . It's cover really doesn't sell the book.
I am really enjoying this author,, though this wasn't quite as good as Accidentally on Purpose I still really enjoyed it.
I think my favorite thing about it is that the heroine is so strong & still maintains a sense of humor throughout all the crap she has had to put up with & doesn't allow herself to be walked all over.
Very enjoyable quick read by an author I will definitely be watching out for more from.
I liked the book but didn't understand parts of it. I didn't get the process whereby Rhys falls in love with Lindsey. I didn't like the part where Lindsey forces Rhys to accept he loves her. I just didn't see this love developing between them. Apart from that, the book was entertaining, the dialogues funny, and the story started to make sense to me, when she starts to discover the missing parts of Rhys that don't let her understand him completely.
Ok so here’s the thing: The book was really short, a really quick, hot and sweet read. There are some pieces of the story that still don’t click with me but what the hell it was a good book most of the time so I’m just going to ignore the demanding side of my brain (I think what I’m missing was some of insight of Rhys, many times I ended thinking “What’s up with the faces and not talking about your feelings”) and love the book with my romantic heart.
First of all L.D Davies I love you. I had no problem getting into this book. There is no messing about your into a fantastic read from the first page. The characters were so real. As well as some serious issues it has great comedy, the things women do!! I really liked the grandmother and want a fat cat :) Please it's a must read.
WOW!! short and sweet. only 96 pages but it covered all the bases. Though I wanted to slap the taste out of Lindsey's mouth at the times that she was being really immature I really liked her. I absolutely loved Rhys he is to die for(yum)!!!Pieces of Rhys
To be honest, I glanced at a few reviews before I read this book. It's something I RARELY do because I want to make sure I don't use someone else's word and really, I like forming my own opinion. So, I was a little ehhh about starting this book...
So where to start... I liked it. A 3.5 star read. Yes I know. I rarely go this low. I liked Rhys. Pronounced Reese. He was a very conflicted man. I liked Lindsey most of the time. I really think she needed to find herself before she started anything with Rhys instead after she started something with him. Although, their relationship wasn't rushed. It progressed over time, they didn't instantly jump in bed, or instantly all lovey dovey, well maybe Lindsey was. They had issues that real people face. I was in a similar relationship as Lindsey and Gary. That messes you up for sure. I am glad that Rhys tried to protect her from himself, but that really wasn't his choice to make. I loved her family and Joe the cat.
This would be why: I didn't like that Rhys was wanting Lindsey to be honest with him all the time but he wasn't with her. I dislike that he really didn't give her much of an option besides leaving. Although it seems like that is what they needed. I just didn't see the 'fun' Lindsey had being part of the equation! OMG Little vixen! Also, judging the "very large and hideous" woman coming out of the Victoria's Secret, was completely appalling. Most women have self image issues, I don't think this was very nice. It really should have been left out. It sounds very bullyish!
The Gary twist. Holy shit. Seriously. I was yelling at the Kindle. My husband looked at me like I was crazy.
If the women comment was removed and the book was a bit longer, I would gladly give this book a 4-4.5 stars. I'm not perfect by any means. I am happy with my body shape and extra pounds (I'm plus size and proud baby!), but that doesn't give me the right to knock someone because they are not the prettiest or the skinniest, even if it's just in a book. Just my two cents. I'll get off my soapbox now. ~Anna
Just what I needed... It was lighter than the usual, lots of witty bits, just the right amount of pages, easy and enjoyable to read.
Lindsay; Chubby, quirky, funny, flirty. After being split up with her abusive husband for a year, she has a new obsession. And that's Rhys. Handsome and cheeky, with a total aversion to commitment.
I really liked Lindsay, part from the moaning about her body hang-ups, she was great. Rhys, well I didn't like him too much, his non-committal issues caused Lindsay a lot of heartache.
'“You owe me,” Rhys said when all was done. We were standing in the kitchen drinking beer. “Like what?” If he said sex, I would pretend to be appalled as I tore my clothes off and laid myself out on the kitchen table like a Christmas turkey waiting to get stuffed.'
'”Whoa! I don't get any of my own mothers meatballs?” He looked mildly amused. I wasn't all that amused. I opened the container and put the lid on the table. With my bare hand, I dug in and produced two enormous meatballs. I dropped them on the sex table and then turned to an astonished Rhys. He was wearing the grey tee shirt I liked too much. I used it as a napkin, smearing sauce all over the front of it. He stood there, watching me, too shocked to react... “There,” I said. “A pair of balls for you. I never thought i'd have to give you a pair.”'
'”Can I pee in peace? Or do you want to come in and be up and front with that?” I didn't hear anything. I assumed he walked away. But just as I started to pee, the door swung open. “If I have to be in your personal pee space to get some truth out of you then so be it,” Rhys said. “My personal pee space?” I started to laugh, hard. It was a good thing I was already on the toilet or I would have peed myself'
Lindsey has been divorced from Gary for over a year and a half now, but she can't get him to stop coming over to her house. He lets himself in, takes her stuff, and physically & verbally abuses her. After one of those encounters with her ex-husband, Lindsey heads on down to the local Walmart to get some new locks for her doors. She runs in to her co-worker, the sexy and enigmatic Rhys, who she's been lusting after for the past six months. When Rhys sees the contents of Lindsey's shopping cart, he offers to come over and help her change the locks on her doors. It was all down hill for Lindsey's heart from there.
For months, she and Rhys play at being a couple without actually committing to one another. It's not like Lindsey doesn't want to commit to Rhys, it's quite the opposite really, she's too committed. And Rhys, being the sexy playboy bachelor that he is, remains aloof and non-committal. Rhys gives Lindsey glimpses into his personal life & thoughts but always keeps her at arms length. Not satisfied with only have pieces of Rhys, Lindsey decides to try and make him jealous one night while she's out with her girls. Knowing Rhys will be coming to pick her up, Lindsey openly flirts with a guy she's met at the bar. Drunk and insecure about her relationship with Rhys, Lindsey goads him into an argument about their current state of affairs and things get a little physical. It's the first time Rhys doesn't tightly rein in his anger, and what Lindsey sees in his eyes has her flashing back to events that happened between her & her ex-husband Gary. Rhys, being quite shocked by his actions breaks up with Lindsey, even though he swears he loves her and Lindsey has to learn how to move on, if that's even a possibility.
The book was too short, I wanted it to last a little longer and go deeper into the non-relationship of Lindsay and Rhys. It was quick how they got together and I wondere why she didn't question him about him grabbing a set of keys to her place when they didn't have a exclusive relationship. I would have thought that Lindsay would have been more gaurded when he did that considering her past abusive relationship with her ex husband.
Rhys...mmmmm what can you say about the man candy and all man that he is. For a guy that doesn't do relationships he was marking his territory, especailly at work where he never did in the past. makes a person think that man whore wants to change his ways, ya think.
The book was funny and made me laugh, especailly the part when Freduriel clocked Tina. Tina deserved it talking smack about her being able to get Rhys if she really wanted to. The ending was a bit rushed but I enjoyed the banter that was going on between Lindsay and Rhys.
I really enjoyed this little gem. In no way did I expect to like it as much as I did. The storyline has been done many times over, but it still sucked me right in and something about the way it was put together made me smile. I loved Lindsey. She's smart, sarcastic, and talks to meatballs. (What's not to love?) Rhys was hot, sweet, and sexy. There are things that bothered me or didn't seem to mesh...like Lindsey is really insecure, but yet she is able to stand up to her incredibly abusive ex. It is a relatively short read, so it jumped right into the storyline. I would've liked a little more character development, especially with Rhys. However, the good far outweighs any negative IMO. I wouldn't hesitate to read this author again.
I really loved this one, Lindsey was hilarious and I just had an overall good feeling the whole time. Rhys had me all swoony and it had some hot scenes ;) I loved the H/h dynamic. They had a great connection. My only major complaint was that I wanted more! It was way too short and didn't need to be. Some of the major situations felt rushed and it could've been that much better. But I loved it. I will be looking out for more from this author, for sure.
This might possibly be the worst book I've ever read. I loved the book "Wallbanger" and this was recommened as a similar book on a discussion board....WRONG!!!
I'm actually even ashamed to list that I read it but I really wanted to put a warning out there. It failed in every area possible.
This is one instance when I totally wished I'd judged a book by it's cover and then I would have never read it in the first place.
Booyah....loved the story of Rhys and Lindsey!! "Don't call my cat fat!!" This story touched on a serious subject but approached it with humor and love!! I enjoyed the banter between Rhys and Lindsey and CHEERS to Muriel for punching that snotty Tina! Great story - would recommend you read this one!
I truly loved this book. It had me cracking up a lot!!! Good sex scenes. Story also dealt with A very serious matter of abuse. Only negative thing is that is about 90something pages but every page is worth it and just enough to lead to a HEA, I read it in one seating and it was all worth it, OH think Isaid that already. Lol!
OMG, I loved this story. I literally LOL'd at several points in this book! Muriel's "b*****s with stitches" comment literally had me cracking up for 10 minutes. I seriously want to adopt the grandmother! She was just too funny & inappropriate.
Cute story. Wish it would've been a little more developed. It was like reading a book and skipping through only to the good parts. I would've liked to have seen more of the fluff. Lindsey was hysterical and Rhys as well. Good story overall, so BOOYAH!
Even though there were a few characters I wanted to punch in the face I absolutely loved the story! I only gave this book 4 stars because of the violence against women! Other than the aforementioned this book was awesome!
Fantastic!! This book made me laugh. I loved the story and their banter was easily amusing. It is a great story of how to overcome your fears and learn to love. I love her attitude toward her body and his toward her. :-)
I read this book in one day! I could not put it down. Loved, loved, loved it! Who could not love Rhys? Lindsey was such a strong, real, funny character I just wished there had been more.... Ahh Should be a 4.5 stars!!
I really liked this book. I did have some problems with it though. I felt that some parts were a little choppy towards the end. I got confused at some parts of the story. However, I did really enjoy the story and wished it was a bit longer. Definitely recommend this book!
I liked...it was hard to read about the abusive relationship, but it wasn't what I was expecting. I liked the main character and the way she was able heal and find herself, but still move on when necessary. No easy decisions, but always trying to do right by herself.
