This is a really good book by a new to me author where Katherine 'Kat' Haynes is trying to get a fresh start after her divorce in a new town and in a new career. Her confidence as a vet tech and the need by her employers to fill the position lands her the job over other less qualified local applicants. Her luck continues to improve when two local hunks, Mac Dunna & Jay Reynolds, see her at a BDSM club and decide she's the missing link they've been searching for to complete their triad relationship and proceed to introduce her to the benefits of a menage relationship. But there's someone not happy about her new found luck and makes it clear she's not welcome.
Great premise book with an engaging plot story line. It started out a little stilted for me in terms of set up back stories and the intro of characters but changed dramatically by the middle of the book when the action started. Hot steamy BDSM erotica scenes were well written and gave this read high scores in my book. It's hard to write good menage scenes where all the players are integrated into the action and the erotica is still HAWT. Well, this author really handled all the players and scene descriptions like a seasoned pro. Further, as Kat was new to the BDSM scene, the author was able to provide rationale and basic explanations in the play scenes that not only provided education for a novice reader but did it in such a way that flowed as part of the story instead of randomly inserted trivia.
I did have a few issues with parts of the book. The side story involving Jay didn't flesh out in a way I thought added to the overall story and a pivotal scene that occurs in the later part of the story was too abrupt and came across as rushed and without imagination. Any further discussions about these points would be spoilers so I won't delve into them further.
I do see the set up to develop this book into a series and I encourage the author to do this. This could be the diamond in the rough type of book that could balloon into a priceless gem of a series.
This is BDSM at its lightest and even then somewhat by rote. Its like the author knew the rules (choosing a safe word, trust, discussion about birth control) and covered all the bases but forgot to make it into a full entertaining story. Kind like reading by connect the dots.
Maybe it was too short and given some more time the author could have put in more detail and more emotion to make the reader love the characters rather than finding them merely likeable.
And then the stalker....can someone say convenient? It didn't feel real. In fact Suzi didn't seem real. A lot of effort was put into the whole fake books, fake lips, crazy persona that she no longer seemed like a real person simply a dramatic plot device. I get these are common but their usually done a lot better.
I will say that there was some humor in the character development. For example
This was the first book by Rayna Stone that I've read but it definitely won't be the last.
The story was very well plotted and, although the identity of the stalker soon became known, tension still built up due to their unpredictability.
The characters were well rounded and likeable...I really cared what happened to them. The heroine, Kat, in particular was someone with whom I could identify...right down to people thinking that her illness wasn't real (a situation familiar to all of us with an "invisible" illness)
The heroes were a wonderful couple who complemented each other and thus brought different things to the relationship...together they were perfect for Kat.
The BDSM scenes were very well written and were of a nature that fitted with someone new to the scene.
Over and above all else this is a love story...and a beautiful one at that.
I really enjoyed this book. There was a romance as well as hot sex scenes. I was pulled into the story from the begining. Looking forward to more from this new writer.
