I don’t usually write reviews and stick to just rating books but after reading Sundial and The Light Bringer’s Way I had to let others know they should take a chance on this complex and unexpected YA storyline. These books are set in the 80s and allude to the fact that the characters may be preventing a nuclear war through their actions of capturing pure energy and altering history for the better. In the books, the characters are given knowledge and power and then must constantly apply it--usually when the stakes are very high. The knowledge comes in a variety of different forms. The first book focuses on martial arts, survival training and mentors and the second incorporates learning from myths, stories and various forms of audio intelligence. It was refreshing the books did not recycle the same formula but instead expanded the information base and kept it diverse and substantive. All of this is packaged in an exciting action adventure with a smoldering romance that features a girl who knows what she wants and goes for it. A truly smart and terrific read that may make you reflect on how your own actions and choices that define your life. A rarity in the YA world.

Epic Story Gets Better and Better!!!!
The Light Bringer’s Way effortlessly carries over the theme of perfect timing and trusting one’s instinct. It is clear the scope of the series is to encourage wisdom through discovering inner strength and to value individuals for their own special gifts. No small undertaking! In this book, the authors use mystical legends, historical facts and tough challenges to help the characters figure out how to fulfill their potential. They also throw in some interesting and unexpected twists along the way such as focusing on the problem of albinism in Africa and providing a lot of empowerment for girls--did anyone else notice how many of the life saving devices are “girls” ie: Book of Sula, Lucie the elephant, Chen’s dancing shoes? Awesome! The sequel maintains the integrity of Whitney and Reid as a couple and balances them with the welcomed increased development of Blair and Patrick. The new duo are not just sidekicks but have justified spots on this pure energy seeking team as is revealed in their aptly named chapters. I have to say the book also sheds some satisfying light on the Delaney family and another darker character previously introduced in Sundial. The conclusion is satisfying in that it answers outstanding questions and provides a few exciting shivers down your back as well. This is a young adult series that expands minds while entertaining them and gets better and better as it goes along!

I have been waiting for this book to come out ever since I finished Sundial! The story leaped effortlessly between books and I was pulled right back into Whitney and Reid’s increasingly fantastic world. The murky government suspense I loved in Sundial continues to grow in the sequel as the characters find out their quest for pure energy has actually just begun and that there are factions within Sunrise to navigate. In the sequel, I was happy to read more about Blair and Patrick and to see them expand their roles while Whitney and Reid continued to captivate. As always, seeing a competent female heroine who can problem solve with insight and innovative thinking is a welcome YA change to the usual storyline and I especially enjoy when Reid scoops her up that she demands to be put down! The sequel is as intricate as Sundial and presents the answer to one of the looming questions--what is going on between Reid and Karen?--by showing the reader first hand what it feels like to be “blindsided” by a jealous perspective. This book answers the major questions from Sundial and leaves you with a whole bunch of new ones...

Also, it is worth mentioning how the authors wove historical myths and legends into their storyline.

Sequel Rocks and Reid is INCREDIBLE!!

I enjoyed the sequel even more than Sundial!! First, we get to see more of Whitney’s quirks and flaws. She remains that strong girl protagonist who knows she can achieve impossible odds but it is nice that she also has a vulnerable side and is not immune to needing help or feeling jealous of that annoying and ever-present Karen! We have seen Karen through Whitney’s eyes from the beginning so it is easy to realize how she misinterpreted Karen’s possessive actions in the wrong way AND how Reid’s response makes him an even greater boyfriend than ever. Before, I wasn’t so sure of what to make of Reid but now I am hooked!!! Reid’s family life is so mysterious and intriguing that I am really looking forward to what happens next! I love Whitney and Reid’s playfulness together (the whipped cream!) and the part when he says he is going to marry Whitney! *Sigh* I can’t wait to see how the love story between Whitney and Reid continues to unfold as they have both grown up A LOT in this adventure packed book. Can’t wait for the next book!!

Adventurous Sequel Goes to New Heights with Even More Depth

Hooray! In The Light Bringer’s Way many of my lingering and existing questions were answered and happily were replaced with several new ones--the cliffhanger ending being the biggest new question of all! The connection between both books is fluid and the phrase “time brings truth to light” reappears but with even greater significance in this book creating a refreshingly intelligent link. Meanwhile, the suspenseful storytelling I enjoyed in Sundial continued as each chapter begged me to read the next (especially in the cave sequence!). The book's unpredictable scenarios, plot twists and clever construction definitely will keep me coming back for more. This is shaping up to be an exciting and memorable series of elaborate themes of survival, romance and friendship. Definitely a great read!

In this well-written and complex sequel, Reid and Whitney face even more dangerous challenges than before and seek help from their loyal and resourceful friends, Blair and Patrick. The authors do a seamless job of answering lingering questions from book one as well as leaving the reader with a giant tease of a cliffhanger in book two! I was thrilled to gain additional insight on Reid, Blair, Patrick and Whitney and to see how their personalities and strengths complement each other. The romance between Reid and Whitney sizzles while Whitney emerges as a very believable and knowledgeable leader of Sundial. Bonds of friendship are further strengthened as each character learns to trust themselves and each other. I found myself rooting for their success as they bravely set out on their mission through Africa, and I am eagerly awaiting the next book!

The Light Bringer’s Way immediately resumes right where it left off in Sundial and launches with a quick pace of tantalizing problems. In a quest for more pure energy, Whitney, Blair, Reid and Patrick form a team to take on a daunting journey through a deadly series of caverns that require physical prowess and mental flexibility. The team is put to the test as they teeter between action and inaction and life and death.  The mix of action and suspense keeps your heart pounding as more pieces of the pure energy puzzle fall into place.  A great read that will take you on a wild and romantic ride!

I couldn't put this one down either. I really wanted to know what happened next. I feel that Whitney, Reid, Blair, and Patrick are well developed, and I really liked reading more about Blair and Patrick. I like that Whitney isn't such a strong character that she's overbearing, but strong enough to be a great leader. I love that Reid is finally getting through to Whitney. I really love Reid and Whitney as a couple, and I think that Blair and Patrick are shaping up to be a very cute couple. I look forward to the third book.

EDIT: **4 stars** (May 7, 2013)
This updated version of TLBW is much more polished. The writing is smoother; the plot details are clearer and the characters more fleshed out. The references to various cultures and their folklore are well tied-in. Whitney's character matures a little more as she realizes her weaknesses and tries to overcome them. More of her past is about to be revealed in the next installment if the cliffhanger is anything to go by!

It is always good to see new authors go back and improve upon past work and present their readers with updated, polished versions. Readers appreciate and respect authors that put the effort in to present their very best...at least this reader does. :)

I was so looking forward to this book after reading the first one in the series, Sundial, which was fantastic. However, I found myself actually drudging through the first half to two-thirds of the book.
***spoiler alert***
Most of the book is about their mission to Africa to retrieve an ancient artifact. Throughout the whole mission, I felt like I was being proselytized to. I am all for thought-provoking ideas and beliefs, but it seemed like every other paragraph was a lecture on philosophy. A good story that allows you to lose yourself in will have more "show" than "tell." It was not the case here.

I expected more of each of the characters to be developed and relationships evolve, but it didn't seem to happen until towards the end, where the focus was just on Reid and Whitney's misunderstanding about Karen. Speaking of whom, the twist about Karen's relationship with Reid was just a little bit too simple/convenient. The first book had Karen falling all over Reid, literally, like a jilted ex. Now that we know they are actually cousins, it is rather distasteful. I understand the whole deliberate misleading plot twist idea, but the mystery would still have been intrigueing without all the fawning.

Also, there was at least one inconsistency near the end of the book, where

Overall, this book could have used some more editing.

When I like a book, I note the author and will eventually get another book of theirs. Sadly, I have so many to read that it might take awhile before I actually do. Then there are the ones that I need it right now as soon as I finish the first book. That was the case with The Light Bringer’s Way. I had read Sundial and had to get book two. Cliffhanger or not, the book was good.

This story picks up right where Sundial leaves off. They are back home in the states, and Whitney has some unexpected side effects from the reactor. It is tough for her to balance the image of a typical teenage girl while trying to save the world and learn the truth behind every facade around her. And trust me, there are many more truths to uncover.

I wasn’t disappointed with this book after reading book one. In fact, I was extremely upset that book three was not out already. Come on, authors, hurry up! You have a reader waiting. lol

The plot thickens in this book almost to a fault. At times I admit that it felt like there was too much information being given to me with too many secrets interwoven. In that aspect, I think the authors could have lengthened the book to cover it or cut some of them out as they came way too fast. But they did not lessen the enjoyment of the story.

Characters surprised me left and right. Some I could see coming. Others blindsided me. But they kept me guessing.

Once I started reading the story, I couldn’t put it down. I had to finish it only to find another cliff hanger. How could you leave me right when she discovered that….. Not going to tell you! You have to read it for yourself.

A great read. This is a unique YA book that goes beyond the paranormal romantic ones that are so popular with vampires and shifters. This one pulls at the Tom Clancy lover that I am. I’d love to see more of this type.

Note: This book was purchased with my own funds with expectation of a positive review.

I rated the first book in this series 3 stars, I've upped my review for this one because the editing was much neater, and though there was a lot of 'back story' being told, it didn't seem to drag this time around.
The quartet is Africa bound for a mission that seems incredibly easy... the group under estimates, but their founder had not. They were grouped together because they work in perfect unison, making up for what their teammates are lacking. Whitney is doing a great job balancing being a teenager and a leader.. for someone so young to sacrifice themself multiple times for 'the greater good' is simply unbelievable. Their journey in Africa, growing closer as a team and as romantic interests flows at the perfect pace. Nothing seems forced, and Whitney finally gets some answers, including ones she didn't know she wanted.....

This is a sequel to Sundial. The story line got boring to me. There was a lot of unnecessary details OR the writer assumed I knew what was going on in the author's mind and I felt lost and had to fill in the missing pieces. Again poor grammar throughout. Missing quotation marks for dialogue, missing words in a sentence altogether, wrong spelling of a word, etc. Not impressive. I really wanted to like the story, but there were too many negatives that stacked up. I will not be continuing this series.

I enjoyed Sundial, and The Light Bringer's Way didn't disappoint as a follow up. I got more of Blair (one of my favorite characters) and the twists in this book were crazy, especially the ending (which I won't ruin for future readers. All I have to say is that The Light Bringer's Way doesn't disappoint in any way, form, or fashion.

I could not finish this follow-up to Sundial. The unevenness of the first book dissolved into ridiculousness, and I could not bear the supposed perfection of the teenage characters.
