Les Dalton réussissent à s`échapper de prison. Lucky Luke a pour mission de les retrouver. Pour l`aider dans ses recherches, on lui confit Rantanplan, le chien le plus stupide de l`ouest. Luke va parcourir plusieurs villes à la recherche de ces bandits. À quelques reprises, Luke retrouvera les Dalton mais ils réussiront à s`enfuir à cause de la stupidité de Rantanplan. Luke finira par retrouver les Dalton à Sinful Gulch qui est malheureusement, une ville de poltron. Aussi drôle que cela puisse paraître, Rantanplan aidera Luke à capturer les Dalton qui retourneront en prison.

About the author

The Belgian author Morris (full name Maurice de Bevere) is best known for his humorous cowboy character, Lucky Luke. Morris started his career in 1945 in Le Moustique, creating various covers and illustrations. By the end of the 1940s, Morris met his colleagues Jijé, Franquin and Will. These four artists would be called "The Gang of 4", because they all worked in Jijé's studio at that time. The first episode of Lucky Luke, 'Arizona 1880', was published in L'Almanach Spirou 1947, and was later continued in Spirou. In his early 'Lucky Luke' comics, Morris was greatly inspired by animated cartoons à la Disney.
In 1949, Jijé took Morris and Franquin to the US, where Morris met Jack Davis and Harvey Kurtzman, whom he helped with their plans for Mad Magazine. He also met René Goscinny in the US. In 1955, Morris returned to Europe and collaborated with René Goscinny on 'Lucky Luke'. Goscinny wrote the scenarios of over 35 stories, which led to the great success of the series.

Des Menschen bester Freund
Ich schaue mir gern Fernsehsendungen über Hundetrainer an. Martin Rütter, Cesar Milan und Victoria Stillwell gehören für mich fest zur TV-Unterhaltung. Oft haben sie es mit wirklich verrückten Tölen zu tun, mit faulen Läusesäcken, mit lernresistenten Vierbeinern oder mit chaotischen Besserwissern, die "nur spielen wollen" und dabei das Wohnzimmer zerlegen in ihrer Manie, die Familie beschützen zu müssen. Auch Lucky Luke hat seit diesem Band nun so einen Begleiter, der dringend in die Hundeschule müsste - aber ich bin mir sicher, selbst Martin Rütter würde an Rantanplan scheitern, der sowohl Jolly Jumper als auch die Daltons in den Wahnsinn treibt. Ich schlage den Köter mal bei VOX vor.

This tale introduces Rantaplan (or Rin Tin Can), and with him greatly anthropomorphizes all animals in general. Even Jolly Jumper speaks now. It adds another layer to the stories, a fresh new canvas to fill up with jokes, so I have few complaints. I never did like the dog as much as many others, though.

As for the Daltons, I feel that they're getting a little old now. Jack and William have lost every unique characteristic they had and are just becoming the bland middle brothers, whilst Averell continues to get dumber (and hungrier), and Joe is consumed by his hatred for Lucky Luke. They also dress up always in their prison uniforms, which never worked for me too well either.

Still, the action and comedy remain intact.

I just love the town signs in the series: "Welcome to Sinful Gulch. Local speciality: Hemp rope"
And this was one of the best badass lines I've heard in a long time: "I want a room for my revolver in, and I don't like to sleep far from my revolver!"

Daltons are on the run from the jail and Lucky Luke's after them. Rin Tin Can, man's best friend, will also be chasing the Daltons and once again, It's a pleasure to follow his thoughts and actions during the ups and downs of the story.

Most notably, this is the introduction of Rantanplan (Rin-Tin-Can in English) who became known as "The Dumbest Dog in the West" beginning with his aimless brainlessness within. Besides lacking logic, he also hasn't much sense of smell, obviously vital to tracking escapees, from a perpetually drippy nose. I would've found him funnier here if I wasn't already well-accustomed to his well-tread antics but my favorite of them, his complete cluelessness about expected allegiance, flourishes best in this first appearance!

It's a typically goofy Goscinny story but Morris' lines seem a bit thin throughout- more of a pencil caliber than the brush->strokery that I'm accustomed to (from reading all but a few tomes). I was only bothered by how differently the Daltons looked- but it could all be in my head, especially because I've read this series in a shockingly bizarre order.

Ez már nem az első kötet, ami nagyon hasonló felépítésű történettel jelentkezik. A Daltonok megszöknek a börtönből, Lucky Luke épp arra jár és néhány kalandos epizód után sikeresen el is fogja őket is visszakíséri a börtönbe. Ami a figyelemreméltó az egészben, hogy a jól bevált recept itt is működik. A hab a tortán most Rantanplan, a nem túl eszes börtönőr kutya központi szerepe, ami szintén jól sikerült. Sok-sok poén és nevetés, kell ennél több? :)

Initialement parue dans Spirou n°1138 à 1159 (1960) puis dans l'album n°17 des éditions Spirou, cet album de 1962 est signé par Goscinny au scénario et Morris au dessin même si dans les premières éditions, Morris est crédité également pour les textes.


Dans un pénitencier du Texas, les Dalton ne pensent qu'a s'évader malgré la surveillance d'un chien exceptionnel : Rantanplan ! Une fois dehors, les Dalton sont poursuivis par les gardiens et Rantanplan. Ils demandent de l'aide à Lucky Luke, mais ce dernier en a marre de courir sans cesse après ce quatuor fraternel et il décline la proposition. Néanmoins, il finit par revenir sur sa décision et se lance donc, une fois encore, à la poursuite des Dalton avec l'aide spéciale de Rantantplan.

Cet album est le premier avec le chien le plus bête de l'Ouest. On y retrouve toute la verve créatrice de Goscinny et le trait souple de Morris. Les gags s'enchaînent et bien qu'on sache comment tout cela va se terminer, on se délecte des méandres humoristiques distillés par l'empereur de la BD humoristique : René Goscinny ! J'ai retrouvé mes douze ans en relisant cette histoire et je suis toujours aussi admiratif de l'Art de Goscinny.

'In het spoor van de daltons' markeert het debuut van Rataplan, de domste hond van het Wilde Westen en Goscinny's en Morris' parodie op filmhond Rin Tin Tin. We kunnen Rataplans bescheiden gedachtenwereld volgen, en ook Lucky Luke's paard Jolly Jumper is ineens een denkend wezen geworden. Verder wordt Averell's eetlust verder uitvergroot. Het verhaal is niet het beste onderdeel van dit album, maar het is goed getimed en sommige panels zijn niet minder dan prachtig.

Dalton bersaudara terlihat tingkat 'kebanditannya' di nomor ini. Seri komik Lucky Luke, walaupun sebenarnya merupakan komik aksi petualangan, namun lebih menitikberatkan pada komedi. Walhasil, tokoh-tokoh penjahatnya seringkali jadi tampak konyol. Di nomor ini, kita bisa lihat bahwa Dalton bersaudara, yang dalam beberapa nomor selalu tampak konyol, benar-benar ditakuti sampai-sampai satu kota mengungsi karena takut kepada mereka.

Première apparition de Rantanplan, le chien le plus bête de l'ouest. L'histoire repose d'ailleurs essentiellement sur les frasques répété du chien et sur la proverbiale attitude bête et méchante des Dalton, une fois de plus en fuite.

This was the first Lucky Luke comics I read as a kid. It must be around 1967 in the Italian children weekly Corriere dei piccoli. I love it of course. A cow-boy, bandits, a dog: what more do you need?

πολύ αστείο κατά τόπους, αλλά και πολύ επαναλαμβανόμενο, με βασικό μοτίβο τη χαζομάρα και την πείνα του Άβερελ και του Ραν Ταν Πλαν. Ίσως να είναι από αυτά τα πράγματα που όσο πιο πολύ τα ακούς/βλέπεις/διαβάζεις τόσο πιο πολύ γελάς
