Hadlow House has stood empty ever since the tragic events that claimed the lives of its first owner. Now, however, a new family is moving to the house, bringing fresh life to halls and rooms that have for so long remained dormant.

But do echoes of the past remain, lurking in the shadows?

At first Hadlow House seems idyllic, but cracks soon start to show. Old voices are heard, but are they offering threats or a warning? By the time the truth becomes clear, Hadlow House might well be ready to claim yet another victim.

1722 is the second book in the Haunting of Hadlow House series, which tells the story of one haunted house over the centuries from its construction to the present day. All the lives, all the souls, all the tragedies... and all the ghosts. Readers are advised to start with the first book in the series.

We're back in Hadlow House roughly 30 years later. This time Samuel Butler, his wife Rose and Patience, their daughter, face the evil ghosts of the place. What happens? Which ghostly entity will torture who? What about Rose? Another fast paced and eerie story with a shot of romance and reference to the characters from the first volume. The only thing annoying was that the author referred to "Rose" as "Ruth" for several times in the beginning. Well, this was a bit sloppy and should have been corrected in the proof reading process. But otherwise really recommended. Can't wait to get into the next part of this series.

First class horror!

What a good series this is turning out to be. The dialogue may be stilted and the heroine annoyingly naive but those minor foibles do not, in any way, diminish the story's overall sense of malice. Make no mistake, this is one spooky series and I can't wait for the next instalment.

1722 was unfortunately a distant second to its predecessor novel, 1689.

1689 was among the best Cross books I’ve read. But 1722 lacked some of the immersive qualities that I found so compelling to the series debut until maybe the 70%, which is not a great way for a story to develop.

But my issues didn’t stop there. There were far too many editing errors for my comfort, including an inexplicable name change in one of the characters. Ugh. That was quite frustrating. There were typographical errors. Not a ton, but enough to be noticed. The characters used vernacular and language way too modern for what people would have used. It least that is the way it seemed to me. I mean when a character says

There were things I liked. The daughter, Patience, had a lot of grit and perseverance. There was also There were nice little plot tie ins to earlier in the book, which I appreciated.

I’ll continue with the series. I just wasn’t crazy about this installment.

To Be Continued…

This is the second book in The Haunting of Hadlow House series.

Like the first book, it moves along at a fantastic pace. The chapters are very short and easy to follow and understand.

Patience and her father, Samuel Butler and her mother, Rose, are new tenants of Hadlow House.

The last owner of Hadlow House, and both of his wives, and both of his servants, all died there in 1689.

Whether by accident, illness, suicide or murder, the house is a veritable haunted home with a big curse on it.

Now it’s Patience’s and her parents’ turn to revel in the misery of the curse.

A strange woman in a gray dress is seen by Patience. And crazy, weird sightings are seen, not to mention the occasional, strange screams that are heard.

And her father is acting differently from his usual self; in a way. And her mother is injured in a bizarre incident involving hot water. And Patience, herself, is acting inscrutable.

What is going on? Have they been captured by the house? Is the curse upon them? Let’s have a look-see!

Four stars. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Malevolent Haunting!

Small backstory:

Samuel Butler along with his wife, Rose and daughter, Patience move out to the Hadlow House which has stood empty for near 33 years ever since the tragedy that befell the previous owners.

The house though has fallen into disrepair and would need to be fixed but Samuel thinks that the house could be made into a nice home for his family though ghosts from the past lie in wait inside the home. People may come and go but the past never truly dissipates into time and what lies in wait for the Butler family plans to make them their own!

That is about all I can give on a small backstory so if you want to know more then go read this book and series!

Thoughts:

This book was a great book as far as the haunting and ghost entities and I felt there was quite a bit of spooky atmosphere that seeped into the story. The characters in this story though drove me batty as the parents (Samuel and Rose) just made me want to harbor bad feelings towards them and I felt sympathy for the daughter, Patience though she became trying at times when I was reading the story to the point where I was becoming exasperated with her antics and how she presented herself in the story.

The story moves along quickly though as the haunting starts gaining speed and I found myself reading most of the story in one sitting as so much seemed to happen within a short amount of time.

As always though the author, Amy Cross just grabbed me and plopped me into the storyline weaving the horror around me as I delved deep into this story. With these stories by Cross she always makes the stories where you question why characters do the things they do or why things are the way they are within the story.

This book is book two in the series of Hadlow House and I will be continuing on with book three soon as I want to see what else happens with this series and how the house affects families in the future that come to live there. Giving this book four "Evil Spooks" stars!

More than thirty years have passed since Richard Hadlow purportedly killed his servant and wife before committing suicide. The house he built has remained empty throughout the decades but is finally going to have new residents.
At the behest of his employer, Samuel Butler moves his wife, Rose, and daughter, Patience, into the Hadlow House. It doesn’t take long for them to realize that something is amiss. Patience, in particular, is convinced that there is an otherworldly being there—a woman in a grey dress who seems determined to cause harm.
Will the Butler family fare better than the Hadlows? Or will tragedy strike again?

This book was definitely entertaining but I enjoyed the first part better. I think the biggest issue, for me, was that it didn’t consistently feel as though the story took place in the eighteenth century. Patience, especially, felt “out of place” given the time period. I strongly disliked Samuel and Rose. Samuel was overbearing, rude and horribly sexist. Rose whined too much.
I can generally overlook typos but I thought it was careless that Rose was repeatedly referred to as Ruth. It disrupted the flow of the story a number of times. My final issue is that the ending felt rushed. There’s one part, toward the very end where certain characters have a light-hearted exchange following a perilous situation. I know it was probably meant to be a sweet moment, but it just wasn’t believable given the high stress they should have been under.

All in all, though, I did enjoy the story and do plan to continue the series. I hold Amy Cross in high regard and think that she is an immensely talented author and brilliant storyteller. This series is definitely worth reading.

Why is the editing so bad? It would go as far as characters changing their names... 😬

I enjoyed this one a bit less than the first. I reckon it's due to the main heroine naivety that I couldn't stand. Dealing with Patience really required... well... an enormous amount of patience 🥴

Chilling read about Hadlow House! I enjoyed getting to know the Butler family and a fellow villager named, Daniel. Part of me wants to drop another star due to editing. The Mom’s name, Rose switched to Ruth during chapters 11 and 14. There were also sloppy use of quotation marks during dialogue. However, I really enjoyed this haunting read so will let the editing issues slide.

The end was not my favorite because it didn’t go the way I had hoped. But that is what keeps it remaining a horror novel. Onto the next in series!

Poor

Very hard to muddle through! I read the first book and decided to follow the story to the second. I am an avid reader, so I do have some preconceived expectations. There has been no editing or proof reading here at all! The character Rose became Ruth and back again from chapter to chapter. Words and phrases don't fit sentences or follow ideas properly. I swiped to end at about 90% through the book because I lost interest in fixing these mistakes over and over as I read. Very poorly written! And, the English vernacular of the time, 1722 would not find an English priest telling a supposed murderer that is his wife's body was "technically" found on the property. Very hard to follow! Punctuation, grammar, spelling, sentences and thoughts out of place, I had to give up! We also go from miles to metres and other references were inconsistent. Just watch the Haunting of Hill House. Same basic story but on Netflix it's easier to see than figure out.

The atmosphere in these books is done very well the historical elements less so lol.

Like, so I’m assuming this is a middle class English family - why is their daughter working as a chimney sweep? Were girls even allowed to do that work? And why would she still be doing it as a 20 yr old?

We are never told what the dad’s job is or why he was picked to “over see some land development”. It’s never brought up once they get to the house. And as I said, if this is a middle class family where the father is in business or land development (whatever that means in 18th century), their only daughter definitely would not have been a chimney sweep?? Sorry this plot point really bothers me as a historical fiction reader, if you can’t tell lmao.

Also were Anglican Church leaders called “father”? Because their is a character called “Father Ward”
But would that terminology have been used in this period? I forget what the state of the English church was at this time.

But the atmosphere is very good, it feels cold and hopeless reading this. Very good spooky season stories.

But I’m unimpressed with the research here - it’s very simple to pick up a book or a paper about the lives of middle class women in 18th century, especially for such short books.

But the villagers should just burn the house down lmao.

A haunted house…

Hadlow house has set empty for the past 30 years. After such brutal crimes being committed there. When the new family moves in it doesn’t take long for them to realize they are not alone

I have to say this is probably one of the best series I’ve read in awhile.

1722 is a chilling and atmospheric ghost story that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The story follows a new family who moves into a haunted house, and the author does a masterful job of creating a sense of suspense and dread. The characters are well-developed and believable, and the plot is full of twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the very end. If you're a fan of ghostly horror, then I highly recommend 1722.

Here are some of the things that I liked about the book:

•The atmosphere is incredibly creepy and atmospheric.

•The characters are well-developed and believable.

•The plot is full of twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the very end.

•The writing is clear and engaging.

Overall, I really enjoyed 1722 and would definitely recommend it to fans of ghostly horror.

This is a great continuation of this series. At first, you don't know which spirit is doing this until Oliver shows up and talks to Patience, and then you start to realize who it is and why she is so angry. The other spirit that is there is Rebecca, and she is trying to warn Patience to get out while she can. It is a good read, and if you would like to know what happens fully, then you need to read this book. But make sure that you read 1689 first so you know what is going on.

If you read this series, you definitely have to start with book one. I find this series interesting and the author does a fantastic job with detail. The only thing that was ok for me was the beginning. Was not really sure what exactly was the father's job while relocating to Hadlow House. I don't think that was ever explained. Looking forward to the next book!

The house claims MORE victims. A love story, ghost, a blood thirsty house… Hadlow House you impress me. What lies next in this series I haven’t the faintest clue. Always a twisted read you never really can tell what Amy Cross is up to in her writings.

1722 stars with the Butler family moving into Hadlow house after being "gifted" it from Mr. Butlers boss so that he could over see some of the company business ventures in the countryside.

The Butler's are a family of three; father Samuel, mother Rose and 21 year old daughter Patience. From the jump Patience realizes that there is something not right about Hadlow House. However her parents insist all is well. After her mothers untimely death her father still insists everything is just fine.

The first half of this book has a bit of a mystery to it for the reader, trying to determine what ghost it is terrorizing the house. The reveal is not shocking but is done in a delightful way. The haunting in this sequel is quite different than what we got in the first Hadlow House book. Honestly the second instalment was more scary.

I think one of the best things about Amy Cross's writing is how she shows insanity. Not only does she ride the line on if someone is unhinged or not but when she makes it clearly someone is batty it is fully on batt shit crazy. She does it so well! I would say it is clear that this author has a great understanding of the human mental condition.

This is a series where you really need to read all of them in order not just pick up one and go from there. A lot of the previous story feeds this one, and even more so moving forward.

I just finished reading the second book in The Haunting of Hadlow House series, and I loved it even more than the first book. I love Amy Cross's writing, and after reading this book, I fell for it all over again.

I loved the whole plot, especially as the climax is left hanging with Samuel returning to Hadlow House after killing his own daughter Patience the morning after they escape from the house with Daniel.

However, there were many spelling mistakes in the plot, and the names of the characters were changed, which left me confused while reading, and I didn't enjoy that aspect.

Still, I would like to give it 5 flying stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐.

PS: I recommend starting this series from the first book to get to know the past of Hadlow House.

The bad:
Not a huge fan of the characters. But i can sort of ignore it for all of them, and for the main character i can accept the explanation that there's a lot of learned suppression of her identity. But I don't think the characters are where the story shines. I also do wonder if this series was a bit rushed, because there are a lot of little errors.

The good:
I think it's a really nice and spooky book for anyone that enjoys classic ghost horror. I'm a little bit confused about a couple of things. But I'm hoping it's going to be explained in the next books. I really liked the book, because some scenes are just exactly the type of horror I like. "Creepy terror of the unknown" type things.

Tldr: Not a masterpiece, but really fun horror.

I wish this would have been better...

The concept of this series is neat. We have a house through the years that various families move into and find themselves in scary situations as the entities in the house start taking over.

I just didn't find anything new with this book. I was looking for something more but felt more like it was a wash, rinse, and repeat of the first novel. I was hoping for more twist and turns. In all reality, I'm not sure I'll be continuing this series. With a TBR list so long, I honestly don't think I'll miss this series...

Sorry.

The 2nd in Amy Cross' Hadlow House series & it did not disappoint!

Patience moves from London with her parents as her Father has been tasked with handling business matters on & around the Hadlow Estate. Strange things start to happen soon after their arrival including the apparent suicide of her mother.

Where has her mother been buried? Why is her Father speaking to an empty chair? And can local boy Daniel save them from the spirits that are stuck in the house?

Spooky goings on & twists until the very last paragraph! Highly recommend!

Hadlow House is certainly troublesome for all its occupants. As a new family move in, it isn’t long before trouble finds them.

Gruesome for sure but what annoys me are the attitudes of men, in the way females are treated. The parents are awful - always right, though wrong, of course.

Good tale; spooky and horrible...will anything good come out eventually?

Worth a look.

I love how fast paced this series has been so far. I've only read the first two books in The Haunting of Hadlow House series, with both being entertaining and having likeable main characters. If you're looking for a good creepy read, this is a good series. My only complaint is the punctuation and grammatical errors throughout the book.

Not as good as the first one but not terrible. Insane amount of typos, like to the point that some characters names were completely wrong. Sometimes the mother's name was Ruth and other times it was Rose; even on the same page, just a paragraph apart. I'm still interested in reading more of the series but I'm hoping the rest are at least proofread 🤷

A family moves into hadlow house roughly 30 yrs after the tragedies. One family member is lost to the ghost haunting the house. The ghost had a strong pull on another family member who seems to really care for the ghost. Really enjoyed the cliffhanger ending as well. So far this series is shaping up to be a good one.
