Matt Forbeck's Brave New World #2

Matt Forbeck's Brave New World: Revelation

The Truth Is Finally Revealed

In the aftermath of the mass breakout of superpowered deltas from New Alcatraz, fear and chaos grips the United States. Patriot — the leader of the rebellion known as the Defiance — and his friends Street, Lisa, and Charge work tirelessly to help the people in their organization’s swollen ranks.

When a madman attacks a family of rogue deltas hiding in the Front Range of the Colorado Rockies, Patriot and his friends rush to their rescue. What they find when they arrive forces them to grab the family and race to Denver, where they wind up in a standoff against Delta Prime, the government agency of superpowered soldiers determined to crush their rising resistance.

In the course of this, the second book of Matt Forbeck’s Brave New World trilogy, the heroes of the Defiance learn more of the truth about the disappearance of the city of Chicago back in 1976, and what they discover will change the world forever.

Looking for a great supers story that doesn't assume you're an idiot (like so many comics these days)? Take a look here at Matt's works with BRAVE NEW WORLD.

As for this immediate book, its only drawback is that it's obviously the middle of a trilogy of stories. It has an emotional resolution to its immediate plot arc, but you're definitely "in media res" here.

I really enjoyed this book. It is the second volume of an exciting trilogy. I like the way Matt Forbeck is playing around with a lot of really big ideas, and keeping the detail interesting. It is an excellent story to read, and a pacy one too.

Take the ultimate conspiracy theory, wrap it up in the american flag and then add in superheroes, and you'll barely scratch the surface of this book. Matt Forbeck has created a compelling world of power and powers that you won't want to miss.

A good follow up to the first book in the trilogy. The ending made me continue straight on to the final book to find out what happens.

A fun read

It continues on straight from the first with only a bit of time having passed. The characters remain consistent and while the older ones don't grow that much the younger characters come into there own.

An entertaining read

Shadowhawk reviews the second in a brand new trilogy of self-published novels by Matt Forbeck, set in the RPG setting Matt Forbeck’s Brave New World.

“A fantastic sequel that really delves into the history of the setting and increases the stakes the good guys are fighting for.” ~The Founding Fields

I read the first novel in the series, Revolution, back in June (a review of which can be found here), and when I was done with it, I was left feeling rather elated about the whole experience. I had a few issues with the novel, mainly in the pacing department, but on the whole I loved the book and was really looking forward to reading the sequel, Revelation. So when I got a review copy of the book earlier this month, courtesy of Matt himself, I went in with high expectations. As I mentioned in the review for Revolution, he is one of the most consistent authors I know of and his work has always impressed me. He continues that winning streak with Revelation which, if anything, is much better than it’s predecessor.

When we left off our principal characters in Revolution, they had just done the impossible and their actions had totally changed the playing field between Patriot’s superhero rebels, known as the Defiance, and the government-sanctioned superhero task-force known as Delta Prime. And in the ending, we were treated to a rather spectacular on-screen entry of a character whose origins were highly mysterious. With Revelation, Matt picks up all those little strands and continues on with them, expanding on the setting of Matt Forbeck’s Brave New World and showing us the aftermath of the events in the previous book.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: this series NEEDS to be made into a movie because these books are full of some of the most fun cinematic moments I’ve read. I understand that Reactor 88 Studios are working on something and I look forward to seeing how that project goes. The people on the covers of these books are actors from the movie in fact. High-speed car chases, superhero duke-outs and so on keep the novel ticking along and it’s like you really are right there alongside the characters.

Patriot, Charge, Lisa, and Street return once again alongside some new folks, and a couple others that Patriot has a long history with, for this book. This time, the four of them are on an emergency evac-and-escape mission as they have to make sure that an unregistered delta girl and her family aren’t caught in the crossfires of the Delta Program and have a safe haven where they can live normally.

From the start, that angle really had me hooked. In the previous book, it was Lisa who was on the run for the same reasons and it was Patriot who was out to keep her safe. This time the stakes are bigger on both counts, and that’s reflected in the narrative in more ways than just that. This time, the Catholic Church itself is involved and in a surprise twist to the setting, it appears that the Church has its own cadre of Deltas, and that there is a treaty between the Church and the US Government, to the effect that the former cannot provide any Sanctuary (asylum) to runaway Deltas, in return for the Church maintaining it’s own Delta corps.

The narrative here is as much about Patriot and his friends, new and old, continuing on the resistance against the government as it is about the Church, or members thereof rather, to make their stand against or for the government. The tension that grips the story throughout is really well done. I think that the only way it could have been better is if the story were bigger, in terms of word-count that is. More space to tell the story and the events would have really helped to solidify the narrative, and allowed the author more leeway and freedom to explore the setting in this format.

Revelation is the second book in Matt Forbeck's 12-for-12 project and a fantastic and action packed sequel in his superpowered Brave New World trilogy.

After breaking out of prison in Matt Forbeck's Brave New World: Revolution, Patriot is once again risking his life to save Deltas from the Primers. This time, the Primers are not going to take any prisoners and are bringing out their heavy weapons to end the wanted criminals. Patriot realises that he needs the help of the Church to buy themselves some time for the rebels to escape. However the Church has an agreement with the President not to grant any Deltas sanctuary. So now the Church must decide whether to give up the rebels knowing that they will die as soon as they walk out the door.

Much of the book focuses on the standoff between the Defiance and the Primers while the Church decides what to do next. The tension in this story is excellent here as we don't know how far Ragnarok and the Primers would go to kill Patriot, their number one most wanted. There's also plenty of superpowered action as both sides use the church as their battleground.

The story felt a little short, but there are plenty of things happening in the book which kept it exciting. Without spoiling anything, I'd just like to say I especially enjoyed the twist at the end.

The second volume of Forbeck's Brave New World trilogy, about a super-powered America that went a bit wrong after the Kennedy assassination (if not earlier). It's another short, action-packed festival of superhumans shouting politics at each other, the laws of physics receiving brutal mistreatment and masses of property damage.

The greater part of this novella-length piece is set in a cathedral in Denver, and at times the story comes across like a one-act play about superheroes beating each other up with the force of their arguments. All that debating is fortunately interspersed with plenty of action, mayhem and the occasional touch of slaughter. Forbeck trowels his plot twists on thick and fast in this volume, upping the ante on the already dramatic revelations of the preceding episode (Revolution). Revelation punches up the stakes of the series nicely, setting this first 12-for-12 trilogy up for a promising conclusion in Resolution. Good popcorn fun.
