Having a blast on the 4th of July in Vegas takes on a whole new meaning for Lucky O’Toole, head of customer relations for the Babylon, a major Strip property, when she discovers a bomb in a friend’s restaurant and narrowly escapes becoming part of the “explosive entertainment.” And this wasn’t the first time. Years ago, when Lucky was small, she’d had another narrow escape. Could the two be related? Missing dynamite, an old grudge, and whispers from the past, force Lucky to delve into dark secrets best left alone. And when her father disappears, things become personal.
Deborah Coonts swears she was switched at birth. Coming from a family of homebodies, Deborah is the odd woman out, happiest with a passport, a high-limit credit card, her computer, and changing scenery outside her window. Goaded by an insatiable curiosity, she flies airplanes, rides motorcycles, travels the world, and pretends to be more of a badass than she probably is. Deborah is the author of the Lucky O’Toole Vegas Adventure series, a romantic mystery romp through Sin City. Wanna Get Lucky?, the first in the series, was a New York Times Notable Crime Novel and a double RITA™ Award Finalist. She has also penned the Kate Sawyer Medical Thriller series, the Brinda Rose Humorous Mystery series, as well as a couple of standalones. Although often on an adventure, you can always track her down at www.deborahcoonts.com.
This is a novella with the characters from the Lucky series. It falls in place after the third book and I haven't read that yet (or the 2nd one), so I found out stuff that I shouldn't know yet. I prefer to read books in the order they are written, so it's my own fault that I didn't pay attention to where it fell. I liked the story, but maybe would have liked it more had I already read the other two books first....
this was a little confusing. i got this along with Lucky in Love as a packaged duo after book two in the series. however this second novella seemingly take place after book 3, and clearly I had missed some things. I wish I would have waited and avoided the spoilers.
It starts with a bang and end with an explosion. I really enjoyed this story I know it was only a short story but it really flew by so you could listen to it all in one sitting. Lucky and the team are on the hunt for a bomber. Not the normal job for head of customer relations but when you work in the Babylon anything is possible especially if this is personal and its the second time the bomber targets you. All the Babylon staff are there to lend a hand and are such a great cast of character's you feel like they are family. Well worth the listen. I like the narrator as she does a great job with Lucky's voice when she is being sarcastic and with Lucky that is a lot.
Lucky always takes the reader on an adventure. She is surrounded by loveable ( and some not so loveable) characters. Once I start a book by Deborah Coonts, I can’t put it down until I have finished the story. I can’t wait to read the next book about Lucky!
Another entry for the Lucky O'Toole series. I liked this book a lot. In this one we see the impact of past decisions by Lucky's father on their current lives. Explosions, love and quirky situations, this book is fun!
I’m hooked! I’m a Deborah Coonts groupie. Lucky is amazing! Strong, hard shell, very smart, confident to the point of being a smart ass, imposing, worldly, and all runny and gooey and rolling inside. Challenging but not unattainable!
As a former resident of Las Vegas, I love all of the true-to-life portrayals of the city (both on and off the Strip). But as a reader who has just found the series and is reading sequentially, the inconsistent time jumps are taking some of the magic out of the continuing story. "So Damn Lucky" ended on Halloween night, then this story picks up on the 4th of July...nine months later, yet her mother is still pregnant, her relationship with Jean Charles still new, she hasn't unpacked anything in her apartment and her office is barely under construction? Plus, the song she knew all about in Book 2 is brand-new to her here? Very sloppy, especially when in the first two paragraphs of book 4 it's clearly the winter holiday season--more in keeping with the book timelines.
Ok, grousing about nitty gritty details aside, I love these stories. Lucky is both a total badass and totally relatable--flaws and all. I'm still unclear why Metro gives her such wide latitude when it comes to investigating cases, but it wouldn't be nearly as fun if she couldn't zoom her borrowed Ferrari right into another hot mess. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series (shifting timelines aside). Viva La Lucky!

Part one of a two part novella (meaning the whole thing may just be a sort of short novel). Great background on Lucky's father, and her past. Lucky is a bit run down in this one, so hopefully she will be feeling her usual self at some point soon
I am not a fan of the half books that author seem to be putting out in a way to keep their fans hooked without really moving a storyline along. I tend to just skip them and wait until a full-length novel is published. With that being said, I could not avoid this book. I love the Lucky O’Toole series.
You have mystery, you have naughty, you have interesting reoccurring characters and you have Ms. Lucky O’Toole the head of customer relations at Babylon, a major hotel on the Las Vegas strip. Right there, that should tell you that her 18-hour days are not what you would call normal. She works for the big boss which is also her father. Her mother is a madam who just also happens to be pregnant again with the big boss’s child. Lucky’s ex-boyfriend is a straight female impersonator that is currently on a world tour and her current boyfriend is a chef at the Burger Palais.
I know, it sounds strange, but if you have been following Lucky’s life from the very first book, this is not strange at all.
In this very short, 94’ish page novella, Lucky is chasing after old dynamite that just might be leading her to her father’s old flame and a possible long lost brother. Of course, life is not that easy especially when her father goes missing and half of Vegas is attempting to fill Lucky in on the past.
Trying to put the pieces together before all heck breaks loose keeps Lucky on her toes and away from the radio, which is playing a love song just for her.
I really enjoy this series and always look forward to the next Lucky adventure.
I'm normally not a fan of novellas since they usually don't develop characters and relationships very well. However, because this is part of a series with established characters I know so well, this novella was very enjoyable. It was another slice of Lucky's crazy, chaotic life. If you like the series, you should enjoy this. Looking forward to more in the series. I love Lucky!
This book was adventure from the word go when Lucky rescues people from a local restaurant in Vegas when she discovers a bomb in the ladies bathroom, similar to a bomb she saw as a child. As she tries to figure out what is going on it appears an attempt is being made on Lucky from someone associated to her father. What an incredible journey!
What a fun read! Deborah Coonts offers fans of the Lucky O’Toole series a novella that starts with a bang and doesn’t let up until you’ve turned the last page. It’s enough to hold me over until the next novel in the series is published. Loved it! Can’t wait to see where things go with Lucky and her growing list of admirers. It's a fun series - I recommend reading it in order.
Excited to read another adventure of Lucky O'Toole before the next big book comes out in May!
Great Fourth of July action at the Babylon Hotel & Casino- this one's written REALLY well. It should be put in print so more people can enjoy it. But i'm grateful for the download and the new book out on Tuesday! :)
A short quick read with some of my favorite new characters. Deborah Coonts has created a fun, exciting series with well formed characters and people you want to get to know better in a location we all secretly dream about experiencing. Will wait for the next regular novel with anticipation.
This is the first book i've read in this series and although it is in the middle somewhere, i was easily able to follow along. I'm sure it will ruin some of the surprises in the early titles, but i'm glad i read it. An Entertaining novella with a ton of action packed in.
Disappointing book fragment masquerading as either a novel or novella. Not very well done. Author Josie Brown has both better character development and plot development with action scenes in the same genre, i.e., female action hero with flaws.
I just love Deborah Coonts and her continuing adventures with Lucky. I'm still sad that Teddy is gone, but the ending to this short has given me hope. :)
