When you're lost, sometimes the only place you can go is home.
Broken over the death of her fiancé, Molly leaves law school to return to her childhood home in North Carolina. Expecting to lay low until she can figure out what else to do with her life, she finds herself in the arms of her high school sweetheart, the boy who represents everything from the past she tried to leave behind.
Looking for an escape, she instead finds a way back to the girl she almost forgot existed and a future she never dreamed possible.
Alyssa Rose Ivy is the bestselling author of more than forty novels with over one million books sold worldwide. She loves to weave stories with romance and humor, and she is best known for writing about college boys with wings. After surviving law school and earning her masters in library science, she turned back to her creative side and decided to write. Although raised in the New York area, she fell in love with the South after moving to New Orleans for college. She lives in Alabama with her two children, and she can usually be found with a cup of coffee in her hand.
This is the first novel I have ever read that was New Adult novel and I have to say that it will not be my last!
Derailed is a wonderful novel about a woman named Molly who has recently lost her fiancé. And I mean lost by he is no longer living. Caring guilt and grief she quits law school in Boston in the middle of class and decides to go home to Clayton Falls, North Carolina.
When she gets there she is immediately met by her best friend Kelly who takes her to the bar, this is where we learn about her high school sweetheart Ben.
She loved Ben and he her but when her father died Molly left town without looking back. But now that she is back n town Ben has decided he is not going to throw away his second change and sets out to win Molly.
Molly decides they can have a physical relationship but that she is not ready for anything more in her emotional hurt state not to mention she things she is bad news for Ben. He of course aggress with the hopes it evolving into more.
Soon Molly has to admit that she cannot have just a physical relationship with Ben, but her past is still just a around the corner taunting her every time she goes to sleep. Add in this with no one know that her ex-fiancé is dead, Kelly’s husband to be trying to hook her up with one of his cop friends and you have a wonderful novel that is going to be in paperback on my bookshelf ASAP!
Derailed is heartwarming, sad, sweet (I had a mental awww going on more than once!) and funny, with a dash of sexual tension. Over all a must read for anyone who is looking for a good romance novel to read.
This is New Adult so there is sex mentioned but it always fades to black before anything really sexual takes place so it is something I think both those who do not like strong sexual elements in book and those who like to have that relationship between the main characters will enjoy.
New Adult is new for me but I will be looking up other books now—next on my list is Alyssa’s novel Flight!
Edit: ZOMG! There is going to be a follow up novel to this book, Veer! *SQUEE*
*I received a hardcover/paperback/eBook copy/ARC of this book for free to review from the author/publisher/tour site; this in no way influenced my review, all opinions are 100% honest and my own.
This is another first time author for me, Alyssa Rose Ivy’s writing is good, I enjoyed all the characters she introduced us to, the plot is well written, story flowed easily and I read Derailed in one afternoon as I really didn’t want to put it down. Derailed is about a young woman who knew she had to escape her small town, leaving behind friends and family after the death of her father. Guilt can be a horrible thing for a young woman to deal with sometimes leaving family and loved ones is the only choice she feels she has. Of course going to college would keep her busy and far away from dealing with her past.
So we meet Molly who has just lost her fiancé Adam, decides she hates law school and quits. Struggling with all that has happened; she decides she needs to return home to figure out what she is going to do next. Heading home to Clifton Falls, North Carolina is not going to be easy but knows she has a place she can call home. Clifton Falls holds a lot of memories and not all of them are happy ones, and of course it is the home of her high school sweetheart Ben. She is not sure she is ready to face him but figures he probably hates her anyway. Like all small towns news spreads fast of Molly’s return.
Ben who once was a bad boy musician has never gotten over Molly and can’t believe she is back in Clifton Falls; he is going to do anything to win the love of his life back. Molly isn’t about to share her secrets, the loss of her fiancée, guilt over the death of her father and of course breaking Ben’s heart. So she decides that her and Ben can hang out and have a physical relationship but no emotions as she is not good for anyone, she believes she will only cause Ben more pain. Molly’s secrets and nightmares are things she is not willing to share with Ben.
Derailed isn’t just a romance novel, it’s a story of a young woman who ran away because of her guilt and mistakes she believes she made and has never forgiven herself so she truly has never moved on. Can she find her way back to her first love?
You have to read Derailed to find out the answers, I have rated Alyssa Rose Ivy’s Derailed a 4 star rating and would recommend anyone who loves to read a fantastic romance novel this is one of them. I cannot wait to read more in this series and of course anything else Alyssa Rose Ivy writes.

This is such a cute story! Even though, there is death involved, yes, I do think this was a very cute story.
After her fiancé's death, Molly decides to quit law school in Boston and return to her hometown, Clayton Falls. She feels like she needs to get away from everything and wants safety that only her friends and a small town can offer her. The story develops very fast, and we soon find out about Ben, her high school sweetheart. There is a lot of sexual tension and some unfinished business between the two, and quickly they get into physical relationship. Molly feels like she's not ready for a real relationship yet and doesn't want to admit that she still feels something for Ben. Ben is a sweetheart. He's amazingly good looking and he's a musician! He never got over Molly, and when she came back, he was determined to win her back. Also, there was Gavin, a cop who took interest in Molly. I felt really sad for him because Molly wasn't interested in him while he was charming and funny. I'm really excited for the second book Veer, where he is the main character.
Overall, this was a very sweet new adult book. I've started to read a lot of these in the last few weeks. If you're looking for a quick, sweet read, I'd definitely recommend you Derailed.
The story starts with Molly quitting law school and moving back to her home town after 5 years of being away at school. She moves back into her parents house for the time being, although her dad is deceased and her mom is living in Seattle with her older sister. Right away you meet her bff Kelly(who was great). You learn quickly that Molly moving home is in big reason due to the fact that she is not with her fiancee anymore. She tells everyone that they are not together/not getting married. While back in this very small town, of course she will run into her first love/ex-boyfriend Ben. Old feelings return, Ben still wants her after all this time. Has waited 5 years to be with her... but with everything in her past, can she take that step?
Read this one in a few hours, but once I started I didn't want to put it down. I really loved Ben. He proved himself that he was not the same person he was in high school. Molly puts it best, that he has changed, but is still the same in all the ways that matter. Molly had so much loss and grief. I was happy she got her HEA. The ending was great!
This was really sweet and cute but quite sad at the same time.
Molly had to go through so much at such a young age however Ben, OMG I loved Ben, anyways he was her rock through everything, her anchor that kept her sane basically her reason to live.
High school sweethearts separated through pain, loss and distance but both of whom have never stopped loving each other and even their bodies remember each other after 5 long years the feelings and attraction they both have for each other have only strengthened.
We don't know the whole story of Molly's ex-fiancee Adam straight away but find out pieces throughout the story, this kept the whole plot intriguing and mysterious.
I really, really enjoyed this and being a part of Molly's new journey, her new life, whilst returning and finding the girl she always used to be. She finds a new purpose in life where she feels loved, wanted and where she feels at home. She deserves some happiness and having her broken self find that was awe-inspiring and lovely to read.
Molly returns home after walking out of law school and the life she had to figure out what she wants to do instead. She is grieving and lost but when she sees old flame Ben she isn't sure what to do. He wants a second chance. Can Molly have a fresh start with Ben or wills he give it all up again?
This was really a bit of a surprise. I thought the pacing was perfect, the build up was intense and I felt for Molly she is clearly hurting. Ben was amazing. Highly entertaining.
If I could make a list about all the things I loved about this book, it would probably be longer than the actual review. I cant explain how Alyssa Rose Ivy has taken my breath away with Derailed. A lot of the books I read are paranormal in nature, but every once in a while I find a book that's just about life and things people go through and this novel is definitely one of those stories. I'm floored with how Ivy takes us into Molly's world and immediately we know something is wrong.
The story starts off with Molly quitting law school and moving back to her home town in North Carolina. We don't find out until a little bit later that this specific change came about because her fiance killed himself. Watching Molly pick up and leave and come back to a town she had only visited twice in five years is something that so many people can relate to.
We're all running away from something or have at some point in our lives and I think Ivy captures exactly what that's like through Molly's character. Her pain ricochet's off the page with each word and I was desperately on the edge of my seat waiting to see how she would cope with things. I like that the novel was fast paced and didn't have any portions where I felt bored or cheated.
The author did an amazing job describing Molly's emotions and showing the reader what goes through the mind of someone in her situation. Derailed was gritty and real and it evoked emotions within me about certain things that I hadn't realized I felt so strongly about. I teared up more than once at the battle going on inside Molly and I cant fathom being as strong as she was in her situation.
Let's put aside my love for the main character for a second and talk about the plot. I love the whole girl leaves home to find something better only to realize what she had was everything she wanted, plot. Technically that's an oversimplification, but I don't want to give the whole plot away. Anyway I've seen some people call it contrite, but I don't think it is, not even a little.
I love how Molly came home and rediscovered the person she was. When she left to go to Boston she was running away, but when she came back she was coming home again and healing...I digress again. I enjoyed all the characters except Gavin. I honestly wasn't sure what his purpose in the story was.
He wasn't a very three dimensional character and I sort of felt like he was just thrown in there so Molly would have someone else crushing on her. I think that is my only real complaint in this book. I felt like all the other characters had a purpose. Tom and Kelly were adorable. Jake despite his temper was great and Ben, Ben I loved to death.
I don't consider myself a romantic in any sense of the word, but my God I totally wish there was a Ben waiting for me at home. He waited five years for her and just wow. Sure he messed up when he was younger, but he more than proved himself in the end. It was like his love for Molly never once faltered and it makes me wonder if that's what true love is all about. Yes, I went there and got all mushy, sue me.
I would highly recommend Derailed to anyone who likes stories about growing up and finding themselves all over again. Cheesy description, but hey we all have our weaknesses.
So, I finally got to read an Alyssa Rose Ivy book! :)
I 'met' Alyssa online ages ago and she's so sweet and genuine. I have several of her books, but you know how it is when you're writing and busy and you just don't feel like you can really be a reader anymore. Well, I finally just picked one on my Kindle and went at it one night.
When I got started with it, I was a little scared. Oh, no. It's gonna be gut-wrenching and she's going to resist the whole book and there won't be any love!! But the first time she caved to Ben, I know that wasn't the case. Those two were sweet and sour, hot and spicy chicken! He wasn't angry at her like she thought, and I was relieved right along with her. Their banter was hilarious, and sweet. She tried to be a tough cookie, but she was just cookie dough in his manly, boatman, guitar playing hands. lol The show where he sang that song he wrote about her breaking his heart...good Lord. And then the promise he made her about that song was the sweetest thing.
I love how she didn't lead Gavin on. I was worried about that, too. Love triangles, bleh. But she laid it out there and he understood from the get-go there was no chance.
I had read some reviews where they compared Ben to Travis from Beautiful Disaster. That he was borderline abusive and way over the top with his protectiveness. Um...what book were you reading!? :) Number one, I've read Beautiful Disaster and yes, Ben is an alpha and he's protective and jealous, but he was nowhere near Travis-level. He knew she was on the fence and vulnerable about everything, so yes, he was protective and didn't want her to be swayed by some guy trying (in his mind) to swoop in and take advantage of her when he'd just gotten her back. That's my fav kind of guy.
I was a little disappointed in her when they jumped into bed so quickly. But I'm more of a lovey-dovey type with the sex a really serious moment. These two tried to make it 'casual', but we knew it wasn't. I just wished she had made Ben prove himself a little bit before she gave him the goods again. lol He hadn't been the best guy when she dated him and I loved how he didn't blame her for leaving.
The ending was great. The story flowed well. I never flipped pages out of boredom. The characters were well thought out. The fiance' was the guy you wanted to hate but had a hard time with it. What a jerk, but...poor guy, ya know? I understood all her reasoning for being reluctant and was so happy that the book was spent more on focusing how to get over those things instead of fighting it tooth and nail. The friends weren't man-hating, ditzy, drunken vixens as they sometimes (a lot) are in NA books (Which drives me INSANE).
And I heard Jake, Ben's brother, has a book. Looking forward to that one for sure.
5 wonderful, I want a guy to sing to me while staring me down on stage and then take me on his boat, stars from me.
Molly comes back home to Clifton Falls, North Carolina to try and figure out what she's supposed to do next. Months after her fiance's death, she's quit law school and found that booze helps numb the nightmares that plague her. But she didn't count on her return stirring up the other ghosts of her past and making her finally take a look at where's she's been and what really makes her happy.
Despite the somber tones of this book, I really enjoyed it. As a reader, my heart went out to Molly right away. Given everything she'd been through you could understand why she was leaving school and running home. The poor girl carried around a lot of guilt, which ate at her. It made you want to wrap your arms around her and keep telling her it was going to be ok until she finally believed it. But as the story went on, it became evident that Molly needed to go through all the turmoil and torment to understand that the one person who could soothe her soul was the boy/man she ran away from five years prior. She didn't make it easy for Ben, but in the end she realized that she was never really happy without him or the small town she grew up in..
I dare anyone to not love Ben from the moment he first makes his appearance on the page. He's that boy we all wanted to love us in high school who grew up to be one of those good guys we could only hope we ended up marrying. He knew what his role was in the break up with Molly five years before, but he also had enough faith in both of them to know that she was brought back into his life for a reason and he wasn't about the let her go again. He may not have known the truth behind Molly's broken engagement, but he knew she wasn't happy and would do anything to get her back to the girl he knew. Sure sometimes he was pushy, but he also knew when to let Molly have her way and understand that he was always going to be there for her.
I wasn't sure what I was getting with this book, but I quickly discovered a very touching story with a carefully crafted storyline and characters that emotionally pulled you into the story. No matter your age, you can appreciate what these characters went through and faithfully hope they find the HEA you want for them.
I was so excited when this tour came up. I had my eye on this book and I enjoyed it as much as I thought I would. It's a bittersweet story of love, loss, and finding your way back home.
Molly was a bit lost. I felt so bad for her. Not only has she lost her fiance, but tragedy seems to follow her. When she went back home I felt a little nervous for her. She was trying to keep the details around her fiance's death a secret, but I think that only hurt her more. When she gets reunited with her old boyfriend, her feelings for him resurface.
I felt like Ben was exactly what she needed. He was an important person from her past that knew her. Ben helped her cope with the loss of her fiance. Even though he wanted their relationship back, he was patient with her feelings. Ben is a bit possessive, but to me it showed how much he valued her and their time together. I was really happy with the end.
I loved the supporting cast. There was a point that I was pulling for Gavin just a tiny bit, but Molly and Ben really were meant to be. I just felt bad for Gavin. He's such a great guy. SO, I was thrilled when I found out that Gavin would have his own book! I went out and bought Veer on it's release day this past week. I can't wait to read it. It's about Gavin and Molly's friend Becca. Exciting!
If you are looking for a heartfelt love story, look no further. Derailed takes you through a tragedy and turns this sadness and loss into an endearing love story.
Wow..*sniffles* just wow. This was one of the most epic love stories I have ever read. Yes it was a little predictable, but the author weaved a fair amount of mystery throughout to keep you completely engaged.
I just can't say enough how much I loved this story. Alyssa Rose Ivy has done it again. She is quickly becoming a favorite:)
*Be Warned* This book is emotional and tissues are required. I was so engrossed in the story, I couldn't help but feel Molly's pain and joy. Molly was a very unique character and I liked that.
This is a story about love and loss and finding your way in life. This book would fall under the category of adult/ new adult. I don't want to give away any of the awesomeness, so my review will be short.
Take the time to pick up this book or one of Alyssa's other books A.S.A.P. You will love her as much as I do! I give this book at least five glittery starts for a story with real heart!!!
This was your typical new adult contemporary read. I did enjoy it though. Molly moves back to her hometown where she plans on trying to move on from her troubles in Boston. She did not plan on getting back together with her high school sweetheart Ben. However, we know that's exactly what happens. No this isn't a spoiler you should just know by now 90% of authors do that.
Back in December 2012, I read the second book in the Veer series, and now’s the time to go back and read the first book, Derailed. I’ve forgotten how easy Alyssa Rose Ivy pulls you into her writing and I was quickly swept away in her world.
As you can tell in the blurb, this is a second chance at love for Molly and Ben. Molly moved home after the death of her fiancé, unsure of her future and what she wants from life. Molly feels down because of what she’s been through, and doesn’t think she deserves happiness. It was sad to see her struggle with her emotions and belief that the men in her life always leave her. Molly was hesitant to see Ben again… the last time they spoke to one another their relationship ended abruptly. Molly was going through a hard time and Ben wasn’t there to support her. She’s feeling lost at the moment and doesn’t want to fall back to old habits.
Ben was upfront with what he wanted, and I could see how much he still loved Molly. He quickly eased himself back into her life, and I felt that she let him do so too easily. Don’t get me wrong, I thought he was a good guy, but Molly’s inner dialogue was all about distance, but then she’d say and do the opposite. I loved seeing Ben in his band, but when he performed a particular song it kind of broke my heart. Molly found it hard to handle, and then asked him to never sing it again… that actually made me a little mad with Molly… it was something Ben wrote and despite its connection to Molly, she needed to accept it.
There was a bit of a love triangle in this book, but it was mostly one sided. I liked Gavin, he had a good heart but wasn’t a good match for Molly. I liked Kelly and her fiancé Tom; Kelly is a good friend for Molly and tries hard to get her out of her slump and doing normal things again.
I thought this was a nice read and was happy that Ben and Molly got their HEA, despite Molly’s reluctance. I think that Alyssa Rose Ivy has a way of building these incredibly emotional worlds that keep you hooked until that final page. I must get the third book, to see who will settle Jake down!
Derailed tells us the story of Molly, a twenty something year old law student in Boston who's been struggling to deal with the death of her fiance. Plagued with guilt and an empty existence, she returns to the place she never imagined she'd ever go back to, Clayton Falls. Molly believes going back home would help her clear her head and find her way back to any semblance of happiness, but what she finds is a future with the boy she thought she'd left in the past.
I tried so hard to sympathize with Molly because of what she was dealing with. The death of a fiance must not be easy, but at the same time, it was hard to understand her pain when I didn't know the relationship between her and Adam. A glimpse or two would have helped to see why she felt as though she couldn't continue law school anymore. When she returns to her childhood home in Clayton Falls, she mentions her high school sweetheart, Ben. The boy whom she walked away from so long ago.
Molly talks about her father's death, as well as nightmares she has every night, but we never get a glimpse or explanation as to why until near the end. It through me off that everyone in Molly's life seemed pushy, and that she couldn't make up her mind about whether or not she wanted to be with Ben again or not.
This book, left me with so many questions I'm surprised I finished it at all. The one good thing about this story was that the writing was easy to get through. Although, it was more dialogue than story. I didn't connect with Molly or Ben, and her best friend Kelly seemed pushy at times, not to mention her fiance's friend, Gavin came off as too much of a creep. I did like ONE character in the book however, and it's the one everyone seems to dislike for some reason, Ben's little brother, Jake.
Alyssa Rose Ivy is an amazing author, her work always seems to amaze me. She has a way of captivating her readers from the start. I would highly recommend Derailed, it was full of passion, excitement and so much more. I feel most readers will be able to relate to what Molly has experience in her short life, and I love when I read a book I can connect with. I can not say enough about how truly amazing this book is, I can't wait til the sequel is released with Jake's story. I think it will be very interesting to see inside his head.
It seems as if Molly has lost everyone she has ever loved. She has hit rock bottom and can't take it anymore, so she drops out of Law School and moves back home to her parents house, which is now empty of her family. Being back home though isn't as easy as she thought it was going to be, she has to face reality sooner or later, but doesn't know if she can do it alone.
When she's forced to face the ex-boyfriend she left before going away to college, her emotions run wild and her feelings return as if she never left, but in the mean while that meant facing the fact she just ran away from another situation that she doesn't really want to acknowledge. Besides that there were reasons why her and Ben broke up and can she really believe he has changed.
With her best friend, Kelly's wedding just around the corner, and having two men fighting for her attention on top of the recent loss and guilt, Molly is ready to crack at any moment. Read this epic novel to find out so much more, I didn't want to dive too much into it and give away any spoilers. You will not be disappointed by Derailed.
I could not get into this book. I had a hard time connecting with the main character, Molly. I know she had been through a lot but it didn't come across in the writing. Instead of feeling sympathy for her, I just found her annoying. One person's review of this book said it seemed amateurish, with a lot of dialogue - I agree. I think that's why I couldn't connect with Molly - there was a lot of talking without much introspection on her part.
And what was up with Ben and Gavin? They both seemed obsessed with Molly and I just didn't get it.
First there's Ben who is totally pussy whipped.
Then there's Gavin who is a total creeper.
I just don't see what all the hype is with this one. I actually ended up skimming the last 30% of the book because I just wanted it to end.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
Man where to begin for this story. It tugged at my heart and had me right there with the characters rooting them on. I just had to see what happens when you let go of hurt and let your guards down long enough for love to take route. Well that is what Molly did and the results were both terrifying and refreshing all in one.
Molly is in law school and she is engaged. She is living the life and wants for nothing. That is until her fiance dies and feeling overwhelmed and alone she leaves law school and goes to the one place she knows she will find love and that is home. Once she gets there her best friend is waiting with open arms and tells Molly the best way to celebrate is to go to the bar. What she does not count on is seeing the love of her life her high school sweetheart Ben.
Ben is determined not to let Molly get away. he loves her and always has and will do whatever it takes to get her back. At first Molly doesn't want anything more than a physical relationship with him because she can handle that but as time goes on she admits to herself that she needs Ben in her life and that she never stopped loving him.
What will Molly do? Will she open her heart up again? Will she close him off for good? Will Ben have the strength to stay and wait for the love of his life? Will Ben be strong enough to pick up the pieces? Come along for the ride of a lifetime. Where love truly conquers all!
I’m a sucker for a good first sentence and this one really pulled me in:
The message was only three words, but his failure to respond had changed everything.
Derailed is a Contemporary New Adult novel that puts you on a roller coaster of heavy emotions—guilt, healing, and happiness. A tender, heartfelt story of gathering yourself back together after tragedy strikes and learning how to live again filled with deeply rich characters and a well thought out plotline.
I have to say, I love it when a book surprises me in a good way, especially when I was thisclose to hitting a reading slump. Derailed was a prefect blend of romance, intrigue, mystery, humor, and raw emotions. When I first heard about this book, I was interested, but thought it would be like any other book where I’d feel content, but didn’t expect anything much from it. Boy, was I wrong! I flat-out loved and devoured this book! The characters were lively, the plot was refreshing, and the romance was sweet and realistic. Contemporary romances are generally easy to read and I find that I breeze through them quicker than say, my paranormal reads, so I loved that Derailed is in-keeping with that thought because the pacing and flow was perfect and before I knew it, I had gone from 14% finished, to like 87% finished.
I loved Molly so much. Not only was she NOT annoying, as some lead characters tend to be (especially females, I don’t know why I tend to hate on the females, lol), but she was funny, smart, and even though she’s dealt with a lot of tragedy in her life, she’s holding it together exceptionally well. Alyssa grabs you right from the start and I felt really connected to Molly, which doesn’t happen often. I loved Clayton Falls, too. A very small and quaint town with all kinds of people. I adored Molly’s best friend Kelly. Anyways, everyone added a little bit to this delicious story, especially a particular guy named Gavin (who you’ll read all about in the companion novel to this one), and I loved that Alyssa added just the right amount of detail to her characters and scenery so I could clearly see them all in my mind, without getting bogged down by minute, frivolous stuff.
Now for the romance, oh, the romance! Molly’s high school sweetheart is Ben, a talented musician who has never really gotten over Molly. Their reunion was purely by chance, and I loved how things developed from there. Their relationship is anything but perfect, and again, I loved the realism of it all. They definitely work through the heartbreak and problems that caused their initial break up, but they also can’t deny the passion and attraction they have to one another and I loved watching that play out. A lot can happen in five years and you see just how much Ben has changed and how he helps Molly to rediscover herself and realize just how wonderful she is.
The mystery surrounding her fiance’s death and the death of another loved one come into play a lot throughout the story and I enjoyed how Alyssa planted subtle hints here and there and kept me interested until the very end. You all know how I hate a plot/book that drags you on and on until the bitter end, so thankfully, Derailed didn’t do that in the slightest. Stuff like what happened to Molly can really mess you up, and Molly deals with all that in typical, grieving ways, but through all that, she learns to find happiness and peace again. Her development and growth throughout the story was impeccable and I really grew to love her. Oh, and the ending?! Stole. My. Heart.
I honestly can’t say enough how much I loved this book and it’s books like these that fuel my love of reading. Alyssa has definitely made an instant fan out of me and I can’t wait to read the next book in this series, Veer, which tells the story of Gavin (a pretty big character in Derailed) and one of Molly’s friends, Becca. I’m sure it will be just as exciting, romantic, and entertaining as this one. If you’re looking for a great contemporary to read, you seriously need to pick up Derailed. You won’t be disappointed!
If you're looking for something simple and straightforward, this was it. There was nothing complex about this story whatsoever. It was predicable and the events moved far too quickly to seem realistic.
There was no substantial plot or conflict. Molly and Ben wasted no time hooking back up and even though the idea of Molly running off or not being able to have a substantial relationship with Ben was put forth, there was never any real conflict or doubt as to what was going to happen.
I'm not sure why Gavin was even introduced to Molly! I think it may have been to fill pages or attempt to divine some conflict but the introduction of a love triangle doesn't work when the heroine repeatedly insists that she's not interested and nothing happens.
I gave this two stars because I liked the idea behind the story but overall, the story itself wasn't executed well. I felt that there was a lack of depth and detail.
I wanted to understand what had actually happened to Molly's father-whether it really had been suicide or bad luck- but never got an answer. The relationship between Adam and Molly wasn't explained well enough to understand why he'd do something so hurtful as to send his suicide note to her via email on what was supposed to be their wedding day. I understand he was dealing with a lot but that action seemed a bit over the top. It also didn't make sense for it to be inserted into the story where it was (on the day her friend was getting married which should have been Molly's wedding day). The emotional trauma from that letter would not have dissipated over night and Molly would not have likely been in the right frame of mind to attend her friend's wedding as the maid of honor the next day, and yet, she does. It's as if the letter had no effect after the initial shock. The progression of event was odd throughout this story. I didn't care for the fact that Molly's friend, Kelly, actually chose Molly's former wedding date as her own. The reasoning was ridiculous!
I also hated how presumptuous Molly's friends were. All of them trying to set her up knowing she was still suffering the after effects of Adam's death and to a great extend her father's death as well. It was annoying. Leave the girl alone. To make her friends even more outstanding people, they asked her for favors on their behalf which would have been awkward for anyone. (I'm paraphrasing) 'Oh, well you've talked to Ben twice since you've been back can't you ask him if we can use his boat for the engagement photos without him charging us and oh, can't you do the engagement photos for nothing.' I felt like these were the most inconsiderate people ever!
Finally, on an entirely different note, there was an odd contradiction that bothered me. Adam's parents blamed Molly for his suicide yet they were kind enough to pay the lease on her and Adam's apartment??? In what world does that make sense? You hate someone and blame them for your son's death but you'll go ahead and financially support them...
While I was not a fan of the book, if you're looking for a quick, uncomplicated, straight-forward, feel-good, unrealistic romance, this would certainly be the perfect choice.
In Derailed we meet Molly, a 23 year old student at law school who’s had, and is still having, a tough time in life. Her fiance has recently died and to say she’s not coping too well is an understatement.
In the opening pages Molly quits law school in Boston and decides to go home to North Carolina to work out her options and decide what to do now. She knows that returning home for the first time in 5 years will be hard, especially since Clayton Falls is such a small community. What she isn’t counting on is running in to her first love, Ben, the guy who’s heart she broke when she left, pretty much straight away.
It’s clear Ben never got over her. The problem is Molly can’t let herself be close to anyone else after Adam’s death. Being close to her makes bad things happen to people. Molly spends her days and nights wracked with guilt and drinking to drown her sorrows. But then she decides to let Ben in to her screwed up world, on her terms …
Can she let herself get close to someone again?
Can she and Ben get back to where they were before it all went wrong?
Can she find closure on the guilt that’s plagued her for the last 5 years?
I liked Derailed but I didn't think WOW about it. I kinda felt like things were resolved really quickly. Like, Molly let Ben back in to her life really quickly. She was fast to jump back in to a relationship with him. I know they already had a history so that made things easier but she was grieving and carrying around a huge feeling of guilt and then she just seemed able to move on. I think the reason for this may have been that seeing Ben again after 5 years made Molly realise her mistake, plus she could be herself around him, meaning she could open up to him.
There was a love triangle in Derailed and I wasn’t keen on this. I didn’t think it served much of a purpose except maybe to introduce us to Gavin for when people read his story, Veer, that’s just been released.
I haven’t read any of Alyssa Rose Ivy’s other books but I will definitely give them a try in the future. I think the reason I didn’t love Derailed and just liked it could be to do with the fact that I recently read another book that was very similar, I Love You to Death by Natalie Ward. That book was much darker, made me feel more emotion, and just drew me in more. It might be an unfair comparison and I might have felt differently about Derailed if I hadn’t read I Love You to Death just before. That’s why I’m not giving up on reading more of Alyssa Rose Ivy’s work. I enjoyed reading her style of writing.
You should definitely give Derailed a try if you like contemporary romance stories that aren’t straight forward hearts and flowers stories. Derailed has the potential to have you shedding a tear or two so have some tissues ready.
Molly has been through a lot of tragedy. After enduring her father's death before leaving to college, she loses her fiancé while in law school. Not feeling like she is on the right path Molly walks out of class and heads home to escape and regroup. Clayton Falls is a bit of a small town where everyone knows your business. She doesn't want to talk about what happened with her fiancé. Molly also wants to avoid her high school boyfriend Ben. Ben never got over Molly and wants a second chance to prove he can be there for her this time.
Molly is dealing with a whole lot of grief and misplaced guilt over the death of both her dad and fiancé. She has been hurt and doesn't want to let Ben back into her heart. They had such a serious and intense relationship in high school that the old feelings resurface and become hard to fight. I enjoyed watching them fall back in love and there are flashbacks and details explaining their high school romance so that the relationship feels genuine.
Ben took me a little while to warm up to. He used to get high when Molly dated him and often wasn't there for her when she needed him. He stood her up on dates and just wasn't what Molly thought she needed. Molly moved onto college but Ben never stopped loving her. Ben was a sweet guy and I was glad he really stepped it up to prove he could be trustworthy. For a little while I was all for Molly getting to know Gavin. He was a sweet guy but it never became a love triangle.
Molly and Ben were sweet and hot. There were also some really emotional scenes that got me a bit teary eyed. This is a great read for any new adult romance fans! I have really enjoyed everything I have read by Alyssa Rose Ivy so far. She writes wonderfully in all genres and I will gladly read anything she writes in the future. I am super excited for the next book, Veer, and will be reviewing it January 29th. It will tell the story of Gavin and Becca!
--- "I never believed there was anyone else out there. I knew completely that no one else would ever make me feel the way you did. You were the best thing that ever happened to me, and from the day I realized I loved you, I never even considered a future without you."
"How's the water?" "Nice, but not as nice as the view." He laughed. "That's supposed to be my line." ---

I finished this book one month ago and I still didn't write my review. In part, because I didn't know what to write. Don't get me wrong, the book was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G, but I didn't want to write the word PERFECT hundredfold.
That's why because it was perfect. The story was beyond my expectations. Mrs. Alyssa is a great author and I knew that I will like any book written by her, but ''Derailed'' rocked my world.
My favorite character is Molly, even if I didn't like her at the beginning. I didn't understand how could she leave Ben. I mean, I would have never left that hotness, no matter the circumstances (yup, I really used this word). But after that, everything was OK. She is beautiful, smart and from my point of view, the strongest character from the book.
Molly left law school after her fiancé's death. She comes back in North Carolina to find peace, but instead she finds her real love again. Ben. Oh my, I have goosebumps when I talk about their relationship. They really had some pretty intense moments together. First, I liked their decision to have a *free* relationship, but then, I changed my opinion. Thanks God, they saved their love till the end of the book ♥
Besides Ben, Molly found her old and true friends: Kelly and Tom. They were so cute together. Kelly and Tom were meant for each other. Just like Molly and Ben. But here comes Gavin. Ugh, I hated this character. Gavin is Tom's friend and he begins to fall in love with Molly. To be more explicit, I only hated him because he wanted Molly. Every time she was near him, I was saying ''Molly, move you ass from there and go back to Ben. RIGHT NOW!''
Anyway, he was a good character and I'm dying to know him better when I will read ''Veer''.
The ending was sweet, perfect and I loved it. Another proof that Mrs. Alyssa is an amazing writer ♥ And I won't stop until I read all of her books. ALL OF THEM.
For me, ''Derailed'' is the best adult contemporary book I have ever read. So, BUY IT, READ IT and LOVE IT<3
HUGE THANKS TO MRS. ALYSSA WHO GAVE ME AN E-COPY OF HER AMAZING BOOK ♥ RATING: ★★★★★
This is a really good book. My first New Adult book and I really enjoyed it. When I first started reading this book, I thought I was missing something...like being thrown into a series without the facts, but as I continued reading, I was like.. okay, this is all intentional. I'm not supposed to know what happened to Adam, that's a secret. So, I continued to read and my confusion faded. Surprisingly, I finished this book all in one sitting. Fairly quickly might I add.
We're introduced to Molly who ups and leaves college. Literally walks out of her Law class and hightails it out of Boston and back home to Clayton Falls. After the death of her fiance, Molly finds herself in a pile of guilt that has been building up since the death of her father 5 years ago. And being back in Crystal Falls, where she broke up with her high school sweetheart, Molly isn't ready for another relationship, but can't resist Ben and how comfortable and safe he makes her feel.
I really liked Molly's character, she's hurting and holding in all this guilt, but she's still strong. Even if she thinks she isn't. When we are introduced to Gavin and then Ben, I thought there was going to be a major love triangle going on, with a shit load of pissing matches to go along with it. But, I'm glad to say there wasn't. But definitely a lot of flirting going on. Ben, Molly's ex-boyfriend and high school sweetheart has been waiting on Molly for 5 years and now that she's back in Clayton Falls, he has no intention of letting her go again, but all Molly wants from him is casual sex. Which then leads to frequent sex and a big hissy fit when Ben finds out she's gone on a "friend" date with Gavin. I really liked Ben's character, you can tell he really cares for Molly and I thought it was really cute. I believe it helps that he's a musician ;)
I would definitely recommend this book. Love yourself some contemp. romance? Then you'll love Derailed. This book did make me cry at certain part, so grab yourself a box of tissues while you're at it. Haven't tried New Adult yet? Well then! Derailed should be your first! :)
Alyssa Rose Ivy has quickly become one of my new favorite authors. Each book that she releases whether it is New Adult or Young Adult I absolutely fall in love with the story and the characters.
In Derailed you follow Molly as she abruptly quits law school, leaves her life in Boston behind and heads back to her hometown in North Carolina. Because of the death of her finance, Molly has no desire to start up any new relationships. When she runs into Ben, her high school sweetheart, old forgotten feelings begin to stir up inside her and despite her mind wanting to fight them her heart won't let her.
Within the first few pages I immediately fell in love with the characters in this book. While Molly has had a lot of tragedy in her life I never once felt that she was annoying or whinny. She was extremely relatable and my heart went out to her because of all the heartbreak she had to deal with in her life. Molly goes through an emotional rollercoaster in this book but all of the turmoil is what gets her to realize what and more importantly who really makes her happy.
I fell in love with Ben the moment he ran into Molly. Though their relationship had ended five years earlier he still had feelings for Molly and I couldn't help but root for them to get back together. He genuinely cares about her even though she was the one that broke his heart. He learned from his mistakes in their past relationship and works to fix them to be the perfect guy for her. He truly is that fairytale guy that all girls wish truly existed.
Alyssa Rose Ivy writes the most amazing love stories that make me wish I was a character in one of her books. Her stories captivate me and I cannot help but falling in love with all of them. If you have not yet read one of her books, then you are seriously missing out.
I absolutely loved Derailed and I give it 5 stars!
* I received a free copy of Derailed for a FMB blog tour for my honest opinion of the book. Had I not been participating in the blog tour I would have happily purchased this book, and I recommend it to everyone!
This book was provided free from the author in exchange for honest literary review.
Molly has had the worst possible luck for the past five years. Losing her dad just shy of her 18th birthday started it all. Now five years later she has lost her fiancee Adam. For a 22year old woman it is almost too much to bear. Deciding she needs a change of pace, she quits college, packs her car, and heads back to her childhood home. As soon as Molly returns home, sage is embraced by her life lone best friend Kelly. Discovering that Kelly is now engages, Molly tries to be supportive of her friends upcoming nuptials. However returning home has brought back other people and memories from Molly's past...and possible may give her a second chance at life. I love this story. Each of us have lost a person or persons at a time in our lives. The author paints an amazing look into tue inner turmoil grief causes. Molly is such a deep character, and the reader truly feels her .pain and sense of loss. Learning to overcome grief and learn to .live again is one of the hardest lessons in life. The omit had several twists which fit but I never seen coming. I enjoyed the easy flow and fast pace. Editing was near perfect. I would recommend this book, it leaves you with a definite feel good emotion. I will say this after you complete the novel and take a good look at the cover you see a very deep sense of the author's use of symbolism which I absolutely adore. I would also add I would recommend this for an older audience as it is contemporary new adult. Happy reading!!!!1
