What kind of Reckless Yes would you embrace if you knew for certain your yes could change the eternal destiny of people all around you? We're all on the brink of eternity—what are you waiting for?
Humans live an average of 26,703 days on planet earth, but we will live an infinite number of days in our chosen eternal destination. Many of our earthly days are marked with the ups and downs of joy and pain, sometimes leaving us to wonder if there could be purpose in our hardships.
After a shocking diagnosis in 2007 sent her life in an unexpected direction, Johnna Hensley had a decision to make. Though she had walked with God for nearly two decades, she had to choose whether she would follow His leading on a strenuous journey to find the narrow gate that leads to eternal life; or would she take the easy, wide path offered by the temporal world? As she chose to say yes to selfless love, through God’s guidance, she discovered this was the first of many forks in life’s road that would ultimately lead her to a life full of adventure, surprises, and sometimes, even hardships.
Inspiring and encouraging, this true story of one family’s journey is intertwined with relevant teaching of who God is and why we can trust Him in the midst of life’s chaos. Through relatable storytelling, wit, and wisdom, readers will be challenged to shift their perspective toward God’s eternal adventure.
In Reckless Yes, Johnna brilliantly weaves together biblical examples with a recounting of her own life. Her masterful storytelling serves as a gentle reminder of the beauty that unfolds through even the darkest of days when we boldly acquiesce to a life lived at the feet of Jesus. —Erin Cuccio, author of Unraveled and podcast host of Room for Lovely
Johnna (pronounced John-NUH, named after her grandfather, John) is an author, {sporadic} blogger, speaker and all-time coordinator of chaos. She’s a wife, a mother, a homeschooler and a fourth generation Texan who is passionate about sharing the eternal hope she found in Jesus when her life took an unexpected twist in 2007. In the moments when all of her hopes and dreams for her family fell apart, she came to realize with certainty that this world is not our final destination. Johnna knows without a doubt that restoration in heaven will come one day for those who know Christ and it’s her passion to encourage women to stop living timid lives of distraction and to bravely say yes to what God calls them to. Through her use of sarcasm and sentences, Johnna paints a picture of hope for eternity as well as offers an honest perspective of life’s challenges, yet always pointing to the ultimate eternal hope of the gospel.
With six children of all ages and stages, races and abilities, her family is a wild bunch built both by biology and adoption. Johnna has been married to her energetic and kind husband, Ryan, for 18 years. She is passionate about being pro-life (from womb to tomb!), foster care and adoption, educating children on how best to include and communicate with VIPs (her favorite, unique term for people with disabilities) and reading the entire Bible (even the part with genealogy lists!).
In her sacred free time, Johnna can be spotted on the patio of a Tex-Mex restaurant elbow deep in chips and salsa talking with close friends about drama with her kids, her love for Texas, the Bible, or the occasional conspiracy theory. Otherwise, she’s introverting at home under her weighted blanket, journaling, while wearing noise canceling headphones with a cup of hot coffee in hand.
It was easy to relate to the author when she spoke about her relationship with her father. Mine was non existent as well. Although my dad was a preacher I still didn’t understand having a Heavenly Father or earthly father. I felt different and isolated myself all the time.
The writing style is very soothing as we glimpse into the author’s life. I loved when she said, “I’ve come to learn that it’s in our broken pieces where we find the most beauty.” Including Biblical figures in the book the author illustrates how God can use broken people. We can be set free from things that have held us back and begin to follow Him.
When I read what the author and her husband faced, I sat still for a few minutes. I remember when I was pregnant at forty-three with my third child my doctor wanted to do a test on our unborn child to see if there were any defects. With confidence I told him no and said if there was anything wrong with the baby we would love it and care for it. Facing what the author faced, I knew the decision was hard but in that moment God was already preparing them for what lay ahead.
The book is very emotional but so good as we see a realistic look at what people go thru during periods of hard times. I loved reading her story and how she opened her heart to other children that needed extra care. Compassion, unconditional love and grace is the three words I would describe as this book. Thank you for sharing your story and encouraging others that “we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us.”
I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
Finding solace in faith can often feel like navigating uncharted waters in a world of uncertainty and turmoil. It’s in these moments of trial and tribulation that our faith is truly put to the test, and it’s in these moments that authors like Johanna Hensley shine a light on the transformative power of God’s love.
“Reckless Yes: Exchanging Worldly Ease for God’s Eternal Adventure” is more than just a spiritual memoir; it’s a testament to the enduring strength of faith in the face of adversity. As I delved into Hensley’s journey, I was drawn into her narrative as if I were sitting across from her, engaged in heartfelt conversation.
Throughout the pages of “Reckless Yes,” Hensley grapples with the age-old question of whether to follow God’s path or succumb to the temptations of worldly comfort. Her candid reflections on the trials she faced and her choices resonate deeply with anyone who has ever wrestled with their faith in times of difficulty.
What struck me most about Hensley’s writing is its authenticity. She doesn’t sugarcoat her struggles or present herself as a flawless paragon of faith; rather, she invites readers into the messy, imperfect journey of her spiritual awakening. This raw honesty makes “Reckless Yes” such a compelling read.
Whether amid your trials or seeking inspiration on your spiritual journey, “Reckless Yes” offers valuable insights and encouragement. Hensley’s unwavering belief in God’s guiding hand is a beacon of hope, reminding us that even in our darkest moments, we are never alone.
I received a complimentary copy of this book, but this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.
This book is a beautifully written testimony of the life of a mom to a medically fragile, special needs child, 2 healthy biological children and 3 multiracial children adopted out of the foster care system. Johnna is open, honest and raw as she describes the dark days after learning her first child had spina bfida and the health struggles he continues to face. She powerfully shares how God was there in the darkness and put her back together when all her hopes, plans and dreams fell apart. She shares how God later called her and her husband to follow Him in obedience to foster and later adopt 3 children. I was encouraged and challenged to dig deeper in my own relationship with God as I read the story of God’s overwhelming faithfulness to her and her family. She reminded me that this world is not my home, and I need to spend my time and energy on the things that matter to God, not the things that matter to the world. The Hensley family is a living example of how God can turn ashes into something beautiful. Johnna’s story also shows how each of us can go from a shallow relationship with God to a life of deep, abiding, reckless faith. You will be moved, challenged and blessed after reading Reckless Yes.
Reckless Yes is a beautiful, powerful real-life story about a young woman thrown into an unexpected whirlwind and coming out of it on the other side stronger for it. And all because of God and her faith in Him.
There are many out there who may have a story like Johnna’s. Having to face a major, unexpected obstacle. Maybe it’s just like hers, having to take care of a special needs child for the rest of your life. Or maybe something completely different, such as a cancer diagnosis, the unexpected loss of a loved one, being let go of a job…whatever the case may be, I’d highly recommend reading this book. Johnna shares how she was able to trust in the Lord and how saying yes to Him has blessed her and her family–even in the difficult times. But her story shows that it’s because of the difficult times that her life is the way it is now–and she knows that it was all in God’s plan.
Her story is not her story, but the Lord’s, made evident by how she alternates chapters from her life and Bible stories. She uses examples such as Job, Daniel, and Esther to make clear that no matter what someone is going through in life, we need to trust in the Lord and His plan.
I had received a copy of the book as part of the Celebrate Lit Blogging Team and was required to give an honest review.
Memoirs are always a wonderful read, as it is a true account of one journey through life. Reckless Yes: Exchanging Worldly Ease for God’s Eternal Adventure by Johnna Hensley is the latest Memoir that I have read.
I have to say this memoir is very deep and emotional. Johanna's life was filled with many Dark moments, but she always had her faith in God and God bought her through those Dark times. Johanna's testimony and story includes having a Special Needs son and how God truly was faithful to her and her family through the times of raising her son Hayden. The story includes how Johanna and her Husband felt led to adopt 3 Children and are now advocates for Adoption and Foster Care. The strength that Johanna and Family have comes from God and their faith and Johanna has many examples of how her faith grew stronger after becoming a parent. I really LOVE that the book not only tells her Testimony, but has so many encouraging Biblical references that are pertient to so many life struggles for anyone.
A memoir that is soo much more than a Memoir! I HIGHLY recommend this to anyone who needs some encouragement through the "Dark Moments" of life. FANTASTIC BOOK!
This compelling book may contain only fourteen chapters, but it packs a powerful punch, both spiritually and as an authentic life story. The author opens her heart and life to readers, sharing from her difficult personal journey and relating things to spiritual truths. The main focus is the battle for her son Hayden’s life and health from before birth to the present. The struggle has truly been life changing for Johnna Hensley and her family in addition to those whose lives they touch. Now, readers can gain from her biblical teaching and her experiences as well. This nonfiction book will both challenge and encourage readers. It’s part Bible study and part testimony time. The writer shares in a way that’s easy to understand and relate to. It could be used in small group discussion or a support group for parents with special needs children. I received a copy from Celebrate Lit. All opinions are my own.
This is a great combination memoir and biblical teaching. I like how Hensley gives some of her own story ads then has an example from the Bible with suitable teaching. I am moved by her example of desiring to bring God glory more than maintain personal comfort. I am challenged by her asking us where we put our hope when circumstances suddenly change. I like her bringing perspective when she gets worked up over something by asking, “Does this have eternal value?” (1658/1959) She includes an Appendix full of ideas how we can help others.
I highly recommend this encouraging and challenging memoir with inspirational teaching. It is also a good example of how others who want to share their story of faith can do so in an encouraging and inspirational way.
I received a complimentary digital copy of this book through Celebrate Lit. My comments are an independent and honest review.
I found that Reckless Yes: Exchanging Worldly Ease for God's Eternal Adventure to be a fabulous book to read. I admire the author for telling her story. Her faith shines throughout the book and I love reading her journey. I know many will be able to relate to her and will be inspired by how she was able to lean on Jesus during the worst times. A wonderful read.
I will be giving Reckless Yes: Exchanging Worldly Ease for God's Eternal Adventure a very well deserved five plus stars. I highly recommend it for readers who enjoy reading inspiring memoirs. I would love to read more from Johnna Hensley in the future.
I received a paperback copy of Johnna Hensley's Reckless Yes: Exchanging Worldly Ease for God's Eternal Adventure from the publisher but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.
What a great book! Johnna writes like she’s having a cup of coffee with you and it made me want to keep flipping the pages. Anyone can read this book and find something to relate to! I appreciated the vulnerability on these pages and am so glad her family story is out there. I appreciated all the references to the Lord. You can tell that this family is centered on Him and He is the foundation that keeps the Hensley’s going!! Go read this book and be encouraged!
This is a personal account of the author’s life. She also includes examples of Biblical characters and had they trusted God when their life was anything but peaceful. While reading this book I was reminded that as a Christian my mission and any Christian’s mission is to live our lives to too bring glory to God and Jesus. I recommend this book to all believers and nonbelievers as well. I was given a complimentary copy from the author and Celebrate Lit and these opinions are my own.
I’ve fallen in love with this sweet family. First time author, Johnna Hensley masterfully weaves God’s truth into the framework of her family’s unconventional journey. Johnna is authentic and relatable, saying yes to hard things to the glory of Jesus’ name. She has challenged me to say yes to whatever God sets before me, until I hear a clear no. Having questions regarding raising kids with profound needs as well as foster and adoption, Johnna is a wonderful tour guide! 💓
Johanna is able to put into words how difficult life can get and how good God is to each of us. She has a big, beautiful family and each person has brought their own unique joy and blessing into her life. This book is amazing and I have recommended it to neighbors, friends, and family. I loved how the Bible quotes support everyday life. Loved this book.
I really appreciated this book. I have never read a book laid out quite like this one, but I liked it better than most memoirs. I liked the way Mrs. Hensley interspersed stories from her life with stories from the Bible that brought out the points she wanted to share. I came away from reading this book with a renewed desire to learn to know God better. I was also challenged to make choices based on I can do for other people to help them see who Jesus is. I highly recommend this book for any woman who wants to have a deeper walk with God. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author, and these are my honest thoughts about it.
I was inspired and I guess I'll say comforted by this book. As a fellow mom of children who have unique needs and also raising children who were born to another mom, this book nourished and comforted me. It also challenged me to keep on keeping on!!
Loved this book so much. Fell in love with Johnna and her family and most importantly was so inspired by her faith in our Almighty God. So thankful for her family’s willingness to let His light shine so much brighter than the darkness.
I’m so looking forward to reading Reckless Yes! I have personally known the Hensley’s for many years and am the same age as Hayden. It has been amazing to watch God work in and through them as they continue to say “Yes” to where He leads them so I am excited to read more of the full testimony of good works He has been allowed to do in their home. 💗
Update since finishing: I don’t have words. Mrs. Johanna has given such a gift to the world through this book. I’m not just biased here. I’m critical when it comes to literature. This is seriously on par with Bob Goff and Priscilla Shirer (2 of my fave Christian authors)!!! So empowering and moving and inspiring as I hear how God worked in and through you and your hard. It’s such an encouragement to me. To witness your total devotion and faith, through these pages and also in real life is truly inspiring. It’s a privilege to get to say “I know her” and I cannot wait to see where your reckless adventure of saying “yes” takes you next!
Also, I’ve known of your dream and New Year’s resolutions to one day narrate an audiobook and you did a beautiful job of it. I was shocked by how professional it sounded. Not because I expected it not to, but because I didn’t know what to expect. Congratulations for walking in these yeses 🎉 Prayers and blessings, Jenna 💗
