Oz. Leo. Inescapable tragedy assaults and binds the two. He is no more. That simple truth tears their hearts apart like castles of sand caving in . . . But will history repeat itself when, in the midst of their sorrow, the two are pitted against each other in a struggle that could end in catastrophe?
The fun little holiday chapter at the beginning to make us forget the p a i n was really fun but then we got thrown right back into it and OH MY GOD?????
Wow. This series hit a 'just average' spot for a few volumes, but it's definitely out of there now. So much character development and beautiful thoughts. Can we have more on Alice, please? And Glen and Jack?
Se nos revela un poco más sobre Jack, además de que por fin se nos dice quién era el anterior maestro de Gilbert. Nada como darle la vuelta al tablero como diría Batler. Perrísimo.
Leo me cae mal. Vincent, Vincent, con él no sé, a veces entiendo un poco por qué hace lo que hace y otras simplemente quiero se vaya, pero ayyyyyy su verdadero propósito sí me dió tristeza. Chale.
The fun little chapter in the beginning was a distraction for the PAIN AND SUFFERING THAT CAME AFTERWARDS HUH?!! HUHHH?!!!
Why are we here...just to suffer. WHAT IS THIS? I SEE, I SEE....The final chapter is called "Collapse", yeah, makes sense.... BECAUSE EVERYTHING WE KNEW UNTIL NOW JUST COLLAPSED.
The death of Elliot left a big grief in everybody, especially in Oz and Gilbert, who were friends and family to them respectively. To lose someone special always takes its toll on people, and for someone like Leo, who never had a place to call home, makes him… snap.
Now he’s working with Vincent and his fully accepting his Baskerville heritance (and everything that implies). But his broken mind is just as shattered as his heart and IMO, he’s fighting without real purpose.
Truth be told, neither Vincent nor Leo have had a happy life but that doesn’t mean there aren’t people who appreciate them, despite their flaws. It’s quite shameful to see them fall from grace on their own, without accepting the help of others.
Last but not least, now we know who was Gilbert’s true master and how Jack met Lacie, therefore, Glenn Baskerville. Perhaps everything we were told before was a lie…
Oh my God. Jun Mochizuki, what have you done? Why has my heart been broken and splintered into a million pieces before being set on fire and turned into cinders? I will now illustrate how I reacted by the end of the sixteenth volume of Pandora Hearts, through the usage of those animated .gifs y'all love so much.
So um, yeah. I couldn't possibly want volume seventeen more if I tried. Give it to me! Now!["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
I'd like to start by saying that with my two decades of manga reading, Pandora Hearts has recently earned its way to being one of the best manga series I've ever read - and to think I almost didn't pick it up!
There's actually a bit of a story to it: Pandora Hearts was being released around the time I knew I would be moving overseas. At the time, I had no idea how moving to the other side of the world would affect my manga buying. Also at that time, I was working at a comic store with staff discounts at my disposal and I never had to worry too much about picking up whatever I fancied. When I first saw Pandora Hearts, I thought the art looked beautiful and this just might be a really good manga. It also struck me as a manga series that could go on for quite a while [which was a reasonably accurate assumption as 24 volumes is not a length I could commit to lightly]. Not knowing how I'd get my hands on manga or how long this series would be let me to putting it back on the shelf. And I confess, it was filled with quite a bit of regret.
When I finally did move overseas - a family friend had a good bye gift. The shape was easy to discern: it was undoubtably a manga volume. While thankful for receiving a gift, I was also nervous: having worked in a comic store, I knew for sure: I either already own it or am not interested in it. In addition, the friend in question doesn't know the first thing about manga. To my surprise, it was the first volume of Pandora Hearts which was probably the single only volume she could have taken from the shelf that wasn't already in my possession and did interest me. How she managed to pick out that one I don't know, but it's a coincidence I feel thankful for and, in some cheesy way, made me feel like it was just meant to be that I read Pandora Hearts after all.
Fast forward to 2023, I finally found the time to read this 24 volume series and am absolutely delighted. My original observation remains: the art is absolutely stunning. With the exception of a oneshot debut work, it's hard to believe that this is quite close to being a beginner's work - you'd not believe it just looking at the first volume's art.
My other thoughts are largely around how hard it is to praise a story you think is so thoroughly good as this one is. It's not really a plot you can explain to someone, it's a story you have to read for yourself as even the latest volumes will throw some surprises at you. But I think, besides the art, what really contributes a lot to this work are the characters. Oz might be our main character, but we have a large cast and they are all lovingly created. There's hardly a character you won't be able to like in one way or another, even the most broken of them. It's quite a feat to create a story that makes you care and worry about almost every character's fate.
And worry you can indeed: it has light and beautiful moments, but it is essentially a dark tale and you'll constantly worry whether the characters will make it through. Needless to say, there are losses throughout the story. There are plenty of twists and turns, things that will surprise and shock you.
I will also add that the plot is complex and not always easy to follow. Some characters have multiple names - this becomes even more difficult for some characters who also have multiple personalities who also have multiple names. Not everything in the plot made entire sense to me - it's hard to say whether they were plot holes, not explained well enough or I was simply missing something - a reread might answer that. But regardless, when these moments arose, I decided to just go with the flow and it didn't disrupt my reading experience at all.
Besides a bit of confusion here and there, I can't fault this series with anything. The pacing is well done, the 24 volumes were neither too long nor too short [something I often complain about] and it wrapped up nicely. For such a dark read, there's also a lot of soft story telling which just concludes this with a very wholesome ending. There is close to no romance but I wasn't missing it [and I'm a big romance reader] - the friendships and bonds between the characters were absolutely beautiful even without much romance thrown in.
I'm glad I did read this series and it is definitely going down as one of my favourites. Highly recommended.
Chapter 62: - Oz looking horrified then switching to serene when Gil and alice walks in 💔💔
-man, Sharon and break siblinghood is making mentally ill, like sharon devotion to break despite his faults and the fact she doesn't know everything about him, and he is begging her to let him lean on her and be "hopeless and miserable" and do things his way just for a little bit more, because he doesn't know how to do it otherwise. and comparing himself to Gil 💔💔💔💔
-i'm gonna do a comparison between sharon & break and Gil & vince, but i don't remember everything.
-no way the writer cut from Sharon's and break " you really are -a lonely a clumsy- a hopeless older brother" to Gil :(
- black feathers falling when Leo, Vince and Echo showed......the foreshadowing omggg
-excited to see the nightray bros, Gil is gonna crash out
Chapter 63:
-Leo looks sooo good, and i think his strong personality that was alluded to before is gonna shine!!
- omg Lacie the song is written by glen's soul in Leo and Leo gifted to Elliot
-omg Elliot's memory lapses and Humpty Dumpty influence on everyone, fucking Leo's sanity is so heartbreaking and uncanny holy shit
- leo's "i'm full of hate"!! someone else said the same thing! i don't remember who though! Glen???
- interesting! Leo wants to destroy the intention, people have been trying to control it, he want to kill her. and that's her wish too, to be destroyed.
- Leo/ Glen looks sooooooo Cool!!
-" i hate everything about this world" is a Glen's line!!! i really don't get it man so leo doesn't exist anymore because he's a vessel for Glen??
Chapter 64:
-omg! leo is planning to drop Oz into the abyss again!!!
- leo (glen) monologuing while the background art is black with light speckles, the abyss! he hated the surface world, the world with humans.
-raven vs jaberwocky?? two of glen's chains fighting each other????? two vessels of Glen fighting each other!!!! oh my goddddddddddddddd
-wait i just realized something! both Leo and Gil, vessels of Glen, had similar miserable upbringing.
-my boys are fightingggggggg i think vince want gil attention on him so he doesn't get hurt :((((( (or so OZ isn't protected lmao)
Chapter 65:
-my babies having a heart to heart in the battlefield, normal sibling stuff
- Gil finally remembering Sablier!!!!!!
- it was never about a "Master" it was always about Gil protecting Vince. oh my godddd Gil took a bullet for his bro
-Jack you piece of fucking shit, you donkey dog stupid ass bitch fuck youuuuuuuuuuuuuu i fucking knew you scum bitch i knew it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-i fucking knew it from the veryyyyyyyyyyyyyyy beginning!!!!!!!!!!! gil and vince were under Glen protection not jack! they were baskervilles!!!! that's why they were always hanging in the baskerville manor and hanging around Alice! when Gil fought with Alice and said "you're always upsetting master" he was talking about Glen
honestly i kinda scratched this theory as time went on, but it was my first thought!
this is why vince repeated what Gil said "don't work with the likes of the baskervilles", he thought "we are baskervilles you fool!"
-Gil seeing Glen's head and screaming his head's out :((((((
- wait...the monologue was jack's???? wait and jack isn't a vessalus??
- the memories are again being muddled you don't know who is who, but i guess that was jack's plan to frame Glen and make himself the hero
Just when I thought there couldn’t be any more plot twists.
This book threw more at me. What. On. Earth.
My main concern is that my local library doesn’t carry volume 17, but it has the rest?! What? Come on! Don’t they understand that I have to know what happens next? Is everybody going to die? If this issue doesn’t get resolved, I might just order the entire series to find out what happens.
4/5 stars for some predictability and annoying characters but great plot and other unpredictable elements. See Pandora Hearts, Vol. 1 for my recommendation.
I just knew that was Leo on the front cover. I knew it and I was right. He looks so different now.
Man, I really hope Sharon's grandmother recovers soon. I was starting to like her.
Wow, Jack being the cause of the whole tragedy in Sablier was surprising but I was always confused as to why it occurred in the first place and why Glen suddenly ordered the Baskervilles to cause such a tragedy.
I'm guessing Lacie is Alice's mother because they look alike. Also, it might explain why Jack had such an interest in Alice since maybe her mother was Lacie and Alice reminded him of her. But I guess I'll have to read the next volume to find out.

So. The bad guys aren't actually the bad guys, instead, the good guys are the bad guys.
I've already disliked Jack before, but now I just fucking hate him. Everything about him is just, eww, ugh, *barf*. Never in my life did I want to see a person dead, tortured, whatever, as much as him. But that wouldn't even do it, right? Since he'll just reincarnate again. Ha. What a joke... Fuck you, Jack. Hope you'll suffer, once this is all over.
It's still good, but I feel like this volume misses some drive and excitement which the other volumes had. Leo is neither charismatic or interesting, and the big plot twist at the end wasn't bad but didn't impress me much. Normally plot twists are supposed to give you an "ah ha!" and unfortunately this wasn't the case here. Overall slightly disappointing.

Haven’t really been bothering with writing reviews bc I love this series and I’ve read so much of it lately, but... WOW. My jaw DROPPED for almost the entire final chapter. I was worried the series wasn’t hitting me as hard as it had everyone else, especially with character deaths, but I stand corrected. The real sh*t has started.
Who’s that on the cover? Wait IT’S LEO HUH oh god I’m not ready-
Thus began a 3-volume long tailspin. Everyone’s actions suddenly to fall into place, until suddenly they SUPER don’t, but I loved it (even coming off of a relatively long hiatus, I did have to backread a little to remember how complex this was getting, but I have a feeling once I get to the end I’ll never have that problem again)
The theme of hating yourself so much you want to erase yourself from existence to make the person you care about have a happy life without you, only for that person to say actually how dare you go deciding what makes me happy! What would make me happy is you not doing this! Haha I think I’m going to be ill!!!!!!!!
