As a teenager, Faye used to read at night with a flashlight underneath her bed covers. She fantasized of bad boys who stopped at nothing to capture the hearts and bodies of their women, and of equally strong heroines. Make no mistake, there are no damsels in distress in her world.

Her addiction is the “enemies to lovers” trope, and maybe that’s why when she first met her husband, their chemistry was just as sizzling as their disapproval of each other. But as in her novels, passion won, and now they live through their happily ever after.

By day, she is taking care of her household. By night, her shadow self emerges to satisfy her undisclosed desires. Literary and not.

The couple: Marco and Lori

Romance trope: mafia
Length: 409 pages

Plot: Marco is seeking revenge for the killing of his father, so he arranges to kidnap the daughter of his enemy. He didn't know she was blind beforehand, but that just makes it all easier. His plan is to kill her after her family frantically looks for her, but she's not at all what he expected. She had only heard of his family, but really knew nothing about what was going on because her family kept her out of their business. Now she's stuck in the middle of it and will have to figure out if she wants to be in this brutal life of Marco's or if she can find something better.

Commentary: I really didn't feel a connection between the characters here. She was hot for him two minutes after he kidnapped her. He could only say "I don't know why I like you." He never apologized for anything - not kidnapping her, threatening her, threatening her family, getting the whole revenge plot wrong, forcing sex on her, brutally taking her virginity, forcing her to have sex with him multiple times and purposefully leaving before she felt any pleasure, tying her to the bed so that her arms hurt, further harming her eyes by leaving the drapes open even though she told him about it - you get what I'm saying? I'm finding as I get older that I just don't connect with darker romance. I want people to be a little nicer. But in this case, it wasn't even the brutality - it was a total lack of connection. And amongst all of that, I think it was a little too long. The best part of the story is when she shut down and almost killed herself. At least that felt genuine and did make me emotional. That was better plotting there.

Grammar/formatting: needed another pass with a proofreader

To be honest, I had a lot of reservations going into this book. When I read that the FMC had a visual impairment,  I didn't want to read about someone being cruel and mistreating someone with a disability or illness.  BUT, I decided to give it a try, and I am glad I did.

Marco, the MMC, is incredibly dark and intense. Lori, the FMC, has a disease that causes near blindness and because of that, she has been very sheltered by her family.

Marco kidnaps Lori in an act of vengeance over the death of his father (he believes) at the hands of hers. He has long planned to make her family pay and plans to take Lori to make them suffer and then kill them. What he doesn't expect is to be immediately drawn to Lori and struggles with his feelings for her. This leads to some difficult and horrific actions on his part (check trigger warnings), The scenes that followed were emotionally taxing for both of them.

As the two come to accept their feelings, the challenges change to external enemies.  The way the characters have to evolve and adapt is very well written.  The two face retaliation and war and so much loss, and yet they continue to grow closer and preserve.  It is steamy, and there are may sweet moments throughout this book.

The supporting characters are great, including Marco's mother and Lori's brother Carmelo, who I believe will be featured in the next book.

Overall,  this was a surprise for me, and I am glad I took the chance to read it.

This ARC was provided by the author, and this is my honest review.

Another great mafia story from Faye Pierce.
Lori Saracino was the only daughter of wealthy, much feared New York mafia boss Graziano Saracino. Lori was beautiful, she was also blind, she wasn't interested in the dealings of her mafia family preferring to earn a living as a photographer and living in an apartment away from the family home, nevertheless she was guarded by her four protective brothers until............
Marco De Vico was the head of the DeVico mafia since the death of his father, ten years before, at the hands of the Saracinos, he had waited a long time for revenge but now was his chance, he had discovered the whereabouts of the Saracino's secret daughter, he thought long and hard what atrocities he would heap on her before killing her.
Marco had Lori locked in a room in his mansion, the Saracinos were frantically searching for her, they had no idea where she was.
This story follows the captivity of Lori, the cruelty and brutality of Marco but also the growing attraction between them leading to palpable passion. How could this work out, Lori was torn between the man she had come to love and the family that she loved who were out to kill him.
This is an action packed story filled with suspense and giving an insight into the lives of the mafia families, their rules, their loyalties, their wars, a great story leading to Lori and Marco's HEA.

Where to start? This book was alright- I feel like it would've gone better if the FMC’s disease regarding her blindness was more cohesive throughout the story. It was said that she has Stargardt disease but then throughout the book it’s more like total blindness with the ability to see shapes and shadows- but also is constantly blurry. And then she can see details like glasses or lips moving and turning into a smirk. It’ll go from how she sees basically in grayscale but then specifically points out colors on clothing and peoples eyes as if she’s seen them clearly herself. When she gets kidnapped she had used her cane, and after she gets kidnapped someone shows her mercy/pity and wants to make her comfortable in her holding place- gets her clothes and stuff for the shower- but not a cane to help her get around. She miraculously makes it through a new terrain without hurting herself at any point and without fumbling at all. She runs through a lawn expanse and through a wooded area- into the city to hail a cab. All without issues. The disability portrayed in the book just wasn’t consistent nor convincing and it really took away from the story. If I were to overlook that- the story was great! It was dark, emotional, and plot twisty. It had a good mafia storyline to lead it.

Lori Saracino is lucky she can see at all. Since she was twelve, her eyesight was taken from her by a disease that has no cure. Which leads her to partial blindness. The ability to only see shapes and colors. A life locked away in an apartment trapped by her mafia don father Graziano Saraciano. Away from the world of bullets and crime. Her only escape the park and photograph and media of her camera to capture nature for the top marketing firms of New York
Marco De Vico is driven by a deep need for vengeance. Vengeance for the death of his father. He thinks that Graziano was the trigger man for it. Marco has the perfect plan in place to get their family back. Kidnap the Don’s baby girl. What he doesn’t know is how beautiful that girl has become.
Comes the day Lori is taken, Marco falls in love with her. The spell is cast. He just cannot kill her. Keep her prisoner yes, torture her no. He even enlists his mother to keep her happy. Marco goes as far to get her a camera to enlighten her days. His obsession with her is that deep. Will Marco let up with his unholy wants? Will Lori fall in love with her captor?

I just don't know where to begin to describe this book, it has everything, mafia, violence and a sweet love story. Knowing that Lori has a visual impairment, the author describes things as she would see them in detail as if she is looking through Lori's eyes, it is beautiful, it tugs at your heartstrings.

Lori Saracino was the only daughter of wealthy, much-feared New York mafia boss Graziano Saracino. Lori was beautiful, but she had a visual impairment so her family kept her out of the limelight in her own apartment away from what they do. A deep need for vengeance drives Marco De Vico, to punish the family that killed his father, when he finds out where Lori is living he kidnaps her and keeps her hostage, but what he doesn't expect is to fall for her. The plan was to take her and kill her, but from the moment he set eyes on her he knew that was not going to happen.

Follow this fast-paced mafia vengeance/love story, how the truth came out and how a Mafia boss can change with the love of a good woman.

I loved this story from the start to the end and can't wait for more. It was so well written and drew you in from the start.

4/5

Marco has wanted revenge on Lori's family for what seems like years after they murdered his father and wants the head of the other mafia family (Loris dad) to feel the same pain so wants to kill his children one by one starting with his daughter who he keeps hidden from the life.of the mafia world that her dad and brothers manage. But one look at Lori and his plans change forever for them both and begins the journey for them that neither are ready or done before. Lori (h) is slowly losing her sight so is vulnerable to rival members of the mafia so her family want.to keep her hidden away to protect her. As.soon as she meets Marco she feels a connection she has never had or got the chance to experience and.doesn't know how to process what she should be feeling or doing when it comes.to Marco. The spicy scenes in this book were 🤒🤒🔥🔥 and added to the plot of going from enemies to lover's

I had two major gripes with this book.

#1)The story had such potential, but this book was so poorly edited that the errors were extremely distracting. Such easy things to catch and correct: when to use ‘to’ or ‘ too’, the difference between using ‘than’ or ‘then’, when something is possessive or plural. There were numerous other examples, but you get the idea.

#2) I have no triggers and can read just about anything. I just need it to be well-written. This enemies-to-lovers trope was fine, but after the FMC is kidnapped and kept in restraints, her nemesis comes in and “takes her virginity”. It’s r@pe. He r@ped her. Call it what it is. Don’t dance around it to try & make their inevitable romance more plausible.

So, those were my 2 complaints. I still gave this 3 stars because I did appreciate seeing a character with a disability. That is such a departure from the usual characterization of a heroine. I liked Mariella and her wisdom and kindness amid the imprisonment of the FMC.

All in all, I liked the story, but wish it had been done more justice in the editing process.

Why 4⭐?

THE TYPOS. This book has an absolutely sickening amount of typos. I can't even begin to say how many. I stopped counting after about 20. Editors are a thing for a reason and if you're paying someone to edit for you they need to do their job. I am in NO WAY an English major, but I was pretty good at the subject. The amount of times the story was talking about the FMC and "he" was used instead of "she" made my skin crawl.

If it weren't for all of the typos I would have gave it 5⭐ hands down. The story was great, it kept me on the edge of my seat at times, I found it extremely difficult to put my kindle down for the most part. The spice in this book *chefs kiss*. I can see where some of the worse reviews come from, because it definitely gives off Stockholm Syndrome vibes, but also I am a dark romance girly. Gimme all the trigger warnings and tropes 😂 So it didn't bother me.

spicy!

The beginning of this novel is revenge. Marco wants to torment Lori's family by kidnapping her. Even though what Marco did to Lori wasn't right. But after he got to know Lori and became closer. He became kind to her and compensated for what he had done. At least he's doing the right thing, However, I like the character Lori. Although at first she might have cried a lot, but she was stronger than I thought. Her tenderness and love for him. Melting resentment and pain in Marco's heart. And what I love most about this is the chemistry between Lori and Marco. Even though Lori is naive But she's ready to learn, especially about sex. They get along very well and the love scene in this novel is very spicy.

true enemies to lovers

One of the best anime celebrities that I’ve read in a really long time faye definitely grasp the concept of enemies to lovers. In this book there was romance there was action there was family versus family. There was a love-hate. There was a happily ever after those are all things I look for in a book, especially mafia mafia is so hard to nail down, but Faye did an amazing job. I cannot wait to read about Loris brothers I hope she does a whole series for her brothers cause I really want to read their stories and definitely check out the bonus epilogue at the end of the book because it is so worth it.

Impending War & Retaliation

Mafia war on the rise. Marco De Vico has been planning revenge against the family that killed his father and kidnaps Lorena Saracino. What he doesn't plan is falling for her. However, he will break her before building her back up, but will it destroy her before he reveals the truth of his feelings? Who will survive this war? The story was a great mix of action and character development. Lorena and Marco are hot and steamy together despite his initial behavior. Trigger Warning: violence, references to sight deterioration, light bondage and thoughts of death.

I received an ARC of this book and voluntarily leave this review.

Just 😯… I knew to wait until I could read without interruption and I am glad I did. The story jumps right in with gunshots and Mafia family dealings.

Lori is the sheltered Princess from one family and Marco is the head of the rival family. Marco has been out for vengeance and Lori gets caught in the crossfire.

This is a true Mafia, enemies to lovers love story.

Great story!

This is a pretty darn good story of the mafia. Marco’s father was killed when he was young. Lori lost her Mom when she was very young. All these years Marco hated Lori’s family for the death of his father, so he captured her. He first saw her and knew that she was different. He was captivated by her. Her beauty, her sassiness. Everything.! He could not kill her. Through so many happenings, Marco finds out the truth of the matter. Things change, due to Lori. This really is such a good story.

I have to admit that Faye Pierce is a new author for me and I thoroughly enjoyed this story and will read more of her books. This is the story of Marco De Vico who is seeking revenge in his father's killing by the Saracino family. In order to do this, he kidnaps their daughter Lorena who is blind. What started out as revenge soon will turn into so much more. This heart pounding, roller coaster ride that Faye takes us on is mind boggling and will keep you on the edge of your seat until the end. Fantastic story and characters

The amount of love and appreciation I have for Faye Pierce is insane! Every time I pick up one of their books I get sucked in and I love it!
This is the first book I’ve read where the FMC has a disability that may be a main aspect of the character but isn’t used as a crutch—I love it! Lori is such a sweetheart and though she’s stuck in the middle she’s such a strong player.
Marco had me all mixed up too…morally grey is my favorite color but it hurts my heart to watch him go through all the feels and then when [redacted] happened I just 😭😭
10/10 recommend and will definitely be reading again!

A mediocre read.

This is a reasonable Mafia Romance not one of the best but not one of the worst either, there isn't a lot of action it revolves more around Marco and Lori and is really an enemy to lovers book. Lori is a poorly sighted almost blind girl but does somehow manage to do incredible photography Marco is a very angry young man who believes that her family killed his father he kidnaps her to punish them and their story begins. It is an okay read but does get a bit boring in places and once again with this author there are mistakes.

Marco kidnaps Lori from a rival Mafia family to avenge his father's death. Lori is vision impaired and Marco is angry and cruel to her at first as he sees her as the enemy. Lori and Marco's journey is filled with sizzling chemistry and uncertainty. This well-written dark enemies to lover story is full of danger, suspense and steamy hot sex that kept me turning the pages. Excellent read. I highly recommend reading the Extended Epilogue as there is a teaser for Lori's brother, Carmelo.

I really like this book I was captured from the beginning to the end. I really like Lori, that with her disease she enjoyed life and her job. Lori is from mafia family, her mother died when she was toddler. Marco was seeking revenge on her father, so he kidnapped Lori from her home. Their relationship was rocky but they overcome it all and found their happiness. I have one remark, I wish you keep Marco’s mother alive. Thank you for one amazing book.

Absolutely amazing book!

If you haven’t read this book yet, you need to ASAP! It is so captivating and heartbreaking with the right amount of spice! Lori and Marco have a complicated story but it’s also beautiful and heartwarming. They each have their own struggles and demons but they way the overcome and flourish is beautiful. That being said, the spice is top notch! I loved this book and can’t wait for the next one!

It's a 3.5 ⭐️ for me

I did njoy this book & I'll definitely read more from this author 👍.
Our Hero is intense, most definitely cruel & I can honestly say I didn't like him one bit. Now that obviously changes & I like the author's use of words especially when it comes to Heroine ❤️.
Why take 1.5 stars off? Well after 10 long yrs trying to seek revenge the answer lies in one sentence 😱.
Great spice in book & plenty of it 💚🇮🇪

Perfect mixture of action and romance!

This is my first book by this author. Mafia romances are one of my favorites and usually the darker the better. Faye Pierce did a great job of mixing the action and romance. The writing kept me reading wanting to get to end to find out how it all ended. I can't wait for the other characters to get their own books!

I absolutely loved this book!!! I felt connected to the characters, and each of their journeys throughout. There were a few grammar/spelling errors, but I only noticed because my brain can't seem to not notice that kind of stuff. Those errors did not take away from the impact that this book had on me. For me, this book was amazing!
