Old Guys Murder Mystery #5

Who's Killing the Old (and mostly lovable) Mystery Writers?: Old Guys Murder Mystery #5

Rate this book
Mystery writers scheme like crazy on how to murder somebody. That's what they do.

Now, one writer turns thinking into doing. With gusto.

Eight of the top mystery writers meet in a remote resort. Their write a perfect mystery novel. They’d done it before with the #1 global smash-hit bestseller Dead Men Don’t Age . To kick it off, they invite Charlie North, retired columnist and now famous blogger, to be the opening night speaker.

The writers are cocksure about the financial return. Heck, the movie rights are already in the bag for big bucks. They just have to sit down and do what they do write about murder. But, then, one writer gets murdered. Then another. Charlie North and his buddy Ben Tucker jump in to investigate.

The mystery writers keep writing. And another body falls. Charlie and Ben think they have it all figured out, but these writers are a strange and crafty bunch. They specialize in thinking up how to kill somebody, covering tracks, and not getting caught.

It all comes clear, in a single room, and justice seems to be served. Ah, not so fast. There's more .

If you’re in the mood for a quirky mystery novel that plunks humor and suspense into the same blender, put this book in your hands today.

For sure, this book reads fast. Old guys like things fast.

By the way, this book doesn’t have cursing, not even amusing cursing. If this bothers you, feel free to let fly where you wish while reading the book. The author won’t be offended.

WHAT READERS SAY ABOUT OTHER ‘WHO’S KILLING’ BOOKS…

“Looking for something to make you laugh? This is it. It captures the joy of aging and the camaraderie of men. The mystery was okay, the fun was in getting there.”

“This was one of the most enjoyable books I have read in ages. It is funny throughout but has really touched on real life. It has a great cast of characters that one would love to have as friends.”

“First of all, the main character is older and isn’t portrayed as A Superman. The anecdotes at the beginning of each chapter had me sharing most of them with my husband. And I must admit out of the literally thousands of mysteries I have read, none have ended this way.”

“If you’re a senior who often reminisces about your younger days, you’ll love this book. It’s not politically correct but an honest take on what life was like before the internet.”

“Must reading for us old guys. A fast paced, imaginative, and laugh-out-loud funny mystery. Lovable characters, especially Beach, the stray dog.”

“This book had me laughing several times while keeping me into the mystery going on. The old guys really won me over here. Enjoy!”

“I loved this book. Funny, irreverent and surprising twists make for a great read. As an officially old person, I can relate!”

“Honesty chapter 12, that was a gut buster for me. I laugh whenever I think about it.
You will love this book; it is a mystery but sometimes funny.”

“What a great book to put first the older generation’s life history and challenges along with solving a mystery I am close to the main character’s age. I have not laughed so hard in a long time.”

“I was thinking of another book series to compare this to. The 1st that came to mind was the Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman. Both series feature old people as protagonists. Both are fun to read. Both are mostly cozy mysteries. The one element I like better in Spoelstra’s series is that the main characters are American with American humor. This is not to swat at the British, not at the Old Guys Murder series is just more fun for me, as an American, to read. So there it is plain and I’m reading not to make myself smarter, but for the fun of it all.”

I’m still trying to get my head around the fact that ‘Take Out’ can mean food, dating, or murder.

Somewhere squishing around that thought, I write murder mysteries about old guys solving murders. If you’re under 40, you should pass on these novels. Wait at least ten years, then you’ll enjoy and appreciate them more.

If, however, you’re over 50, these mysteries might hit your sweet spot, well worth the try.

I’m a Wall Street Journal best-selling author, having written eleven novels and four non-fiction books. The Old Guys Murder Mystery series has been, by far, the most fun.

The Old Guys Murder Mystery books are fast reads. Old guys like things fast.

Happy reading,

Jon Spoelstra

An enjoyable “who done it” that the author has purposely geared towards readers eligible for AARP.

I’m not sure why author, Jon Spoelstra, wants to put potential limits on the readership of this series. The two MC’s are geriatric in age but perfectly functional, as is the rest of the rather large cast. It’s unusual but a welcome change for a cozy mystery series to feature two men. As a woman, I enjoyed it immensely and have already ordered additional books in the series. My 28 year old nephew wanted to know if I had any more in the series to share. Minus the light faith angle, this series reminds me of the Dekker series by Steve Demaree. I’d take out the declaration or add an invitation for others because this is an entertaining read for anyone.

Charlie and Ben love to play golf, eat out and solve mysteries. They have a manageable group of friends that support them in their endeavors. These secondary characters include some quite colorful individuals that are younger and tech savvy to round out the older generation pencil and paper set. In this story, a group of mystery writers have come together for the purpose of collaborating on a second volume as coauthors to a bestselling p, (they hope), mystery. This is a story within a story where what the writers have written is coming to fruition in their daily lives.

As part of the character development, Spoelstra introduces additional mysteries and threads to follow besides WHO’S KILLING THE OLD MYSTERY WRITERS? Conclusions are well veiled and altho’ there’s a repetitive feel, the story itself is timely and not predictable or preposterous.

Spoelstra keeps his writing clean from foul language, descriptive violence and sexual content. Each chapter begins with old age jokes, stories or observations that occasionally include expletives and there are some sexual references and innuendos but by leaving those easily identified portions out, you can completely avoid the language issue.

There are more than a few errors in the text that need to be corrected. Since this appears to be a healthy, ongoing series, I recommend the author make use of a good proofreader; it’s annoying for those of us who actually learned English grammar 60+ years ago📚

According to the description, which says it's for people 50+, I'm about a decade short of being the intended audience, but I still found this to be an enjoyable book. This was the first book in the series that I've read, but I'd consider reading the previous books.

To me, the mark of a really good murder mystery novel is when think you have things figured out several times throughout the story. There were at least three characters who at one point I was convinced were the murders. Then I'd change my mind a little later in the story. I did not expect the ending we got, although it was a good resolution. Normally, I don't like open-ended endings, but there are a few things left unresolved at the end. I liked the uncertainty.

As a warning to readers, there are a lot of characters. I didn't keep them all straight all of the time. Once some of them start getting killed off, you get some cops and other characters, so the amount of characters never really slows down. If, like me, you get a bit confused when there are a lot of characters, I'd suggest focusing mostly on the main characters.

This book does have a few editing errors, mostly the wrong word, such as "he" instead of "the." There were enough of them that it was noticeable, but there weren't so many that it was unreadable or distracting.

The book description says, "By the way, this book doesn’t have cursing, not even amusing cursing." I'm not sure if that was meant to be funny or if I'm missing something. There are several swear words in the book, especially in the jokes at the beginning of the chapters. As for sexual content and violence, that's more behind-the-scenes than on the actual pages. A few of the jokes at the beginning of the chapters got a little too dirty for my taste.

I won this in a Goodreads Giveaway, and I provided a voluntary review.

I liked this book fairly well. I would’ve liked it better if there weren’t so many copy editing problems. Couple of times at least the pronouns he and she were switched once the word he was used when it should’ve been the word the. But the biggest problem was so many times when they were referring to a previous book that was supposedly written sometimes the book was written as dead men don’t age. Other times it was written as dead mean don’t age. It was very annoying and brought my head way out of the story. Also, even though the jokes were kind of cute, it took me out of the story, having jokes at the beginning of every single chapter. I did enjoy the book enough to finish it. But, the issues I just mentioned were the reason I only gave it 3 stars.

This is by far the most clever story in the series.
This time the plot is a real murder mystery. With real clues, and red herrings.
The ending is not just a bloody shot out.
The golf is not as overwhelming.
There is not as much health nuttery. Having said that. Red light saunas? Please tell me that is something Mr Spoelstra made up. Please.
The jokes and anecdotes at the start of each chapter are back. I enjoy them very much, and there is a lot of truth in them. I paraphrase: "The younger generation is rewriting history. We can be sure of two things. It will be misspelled and without punctuation."
I would suspect a "Roman à clef", but that would clearly be libel... The types probably exist, but most writers surely only kill their enemies by making them victims in their books.
Please, Mr Spoelstra, continue writing like this!

Who’s Killing the Old Mystery Writers?

A group of writers comes together to write one book. Each day, a different author is chosen to write the next chapter and keep the story moving. This has worked in the past and the writers have gotten paid handsomely for their contributions. Last time, one of the contributing authors was found dead, killed by the method they recommended for the last book. This time around, there is another death, also killed in the same manner they recommended for the book. The other authors decide to continue on with the book. However, the murders don’t end and the threat levels are high. The remaining people choose to continue on while being vigilant so they don’t become the next victim. With all the clever people in the room, can the murders be solved before they are all killed?

A must read

"Who's Killing the Old (and mostly lovable) Mystery Writers?: Old Guys Murder Mystery #5" by Jon Spoelstra is a delightful blend of wit and suspense, merging the minds of eccentric mystery writers with unexpected murder. Set in a remote resort, the story unfolds with cleverness and gusto as these writers find themselves entangled in a real-life mystery they never anticipated. With humor and a quick pace, Spoelstra crafts a quirky yet captivating tale, where the line between fiction and reality blurs amidst the cleverness of these authors-turned-sleuths. If you crave a fast-paced, humor-laden mystery that keeps you guessing till the end, this book is a perfect choice.

I was interested in this book, as I remembered Mr. Spoelstra's name from Blazer basketball productions; and I'm always happy to read stories that take place in my home state.

This is a pleasant book to read, with engaging characters and an interesting plot. I did wonder about the death by touching fentanyl, as I thought that has been thoroughly debunked. There were also the occasional typo and editing error that I found jarring (example: was the fictional previous book "Dead Men Don't Die," or "Dead Mean Don't Die," as appeared numerous times).

I am hopeful the Kindle copy I received via a Goodreads giveaway--for which many thanks and which affected my review not in the least--was an ARC and unproofed.

Another Great Old Guys Mystery!
I got my stories a bit out of sequence, but the book was enjoyable nonetheless. Spoelstra weaves an excellent mystery filled with likable characters and a storyline that appeals to Old Guys and non-Old Guys alike. A collaborative effort to write another best-selling mystery tale goes awry when some of the participants start turning up dead. Our friends once again get involved up to their necks in a mystery that could put them in harm's way. Great story and a very enjoyable read!

Entertaining escape.

Enjoyed this very much, after just stumbling onto it on Kindle Unlimited. It reads quickly, keeps the reader interested, and is just complicated enough to satisfy. The short posts about old people were often quite funny and spot on. As the age of most of the characters, I felt drawn into the story and did not doubt any of the plot. And although I figured out some of the ending, much of it was not obvious until the steps were explained. Bravo for the perfect diversion!

Enjoyable binge read of all 5.

There is a great cast of regular characters. The victims, suspects, & locations are very well crafted. The flow of the 5 I've read to date were enticing. I had a great time reading the third as my starter book, I acquired the remainder as quickly as possible and embarked on a reading binge. Loved the chapter headings. Strongly recommend for any "old guy"!

A nice murder mystery

This book was a murder mystery like so many others. The difference was the heroes. Just two old duffers who like to golf, oh, and solve murders in their spare time. The story is good it catches and keeps your attention. The old duffers they are an ex-cop and an old crime reporter. The characters around them in support of their crime fighting ways are interesting and deserve some more time on the pages. Other than that, well worth your time and money.

Charlie and Ben are (unfortunately) quite relatable. All of the other characters are perfect for their individual roles. The story itself leaves the reader guessing until the last “Columbo Close”, and all is revealed. Some great twists along the way, with ample humor peppered in to keep the reading light. The book keeps a good pace. I will definitely be looking to read more from this series.

Old Guys

This is the second "Who's Killing the Old..." Book I've read. I love the old guys jokes at the beginning of each chapter. The stories are a new concept and the storyline is captivating. They are well-written and the characters are fascinating. I highly recommend Jon Spoelstra's books.

Fabulous!

This was a fun, fun read! The basis for the plot was 1 best-selling mystery novelist recruits 7 not-so-well-known novelists to collaborate on a new novel. The only problem is someone begins killing them one at a time before the new novel is completed.

I was intrigued and read it quickly. It is a fabulous book!

The story was fun, light and an easy read. Loved some of the sayings before the chapters relating to aging. My biggest problem was the poor editing; missing word, duplicate word, wrong spelling, just basic editing issues. Not a "can't put down" or major page-turner, but a nice read & not as predictable as you might think for a light read. I enjoyed it.

Who’s Killing the Ols Series

I just finished binging through the whole series. Charming and delightful are words that come to mind. The characters are developed nicely, both major and minor. The plots were well thought out and complex enough to be enjoyable. Recommended.

Thoroughly enjoyable!

I loved this low key, no nonsense story. The characters were believable and interesting.
The quotes at the beginning of each chapter kept the sprit light although the story itself was about murders!

Not only a book about two men and what they did in their retirement, but a very well written mystery. I loved the antidotes at the beginning of each chapter funny and interesting. It is a quick read. Just the thing to entertain and relax at the end of the day.

Fun read. Hadn't read any of these before. Personally I think these characters spend way too much time playing golf. I didn't really see too much investigating. A little more action, curiosity, and less golf would have interested me more.

fun and intriguing

The only downside to this read was the numerous typos in the book, which isn’t the authors fault so I didn’t deduct a star for it, but it is worth mentioning.
Other than that I really enjoyed it, and the old man jokes were fantastic :)
I tried to tell my husband the one about the old guy who didn’t listen to his wife, but halfway the through I realised he wasn’t listening. Oh well, his loss ;)
Wish I could have been reading it at the beach in Oregon, with a dog named beach.

I still enjoy the books in this series. This one about mystery writers is also a fun read. The regulars are all here and I find that constant very endearing. The plot development is interesting. I intend to read them all.
