I really don’t like leaving bad reviews, but I actually feel offended by this book. It kind of feels like it was written by AI, but at the same time, the writing is too bad for AI. Maybe the mysterious author planned it with AI and then wrote it themselves? Either way, it is spectacularly devoid of content, and empty of insight. Even though the book was free on Kindle, I still feel ripped off.
It’s hard to explain why it is so bad, but I would summarise the general feeling after reading each sentence as “like, duh”.
To demonstrate, here are some examples of the staggering genius you will encounter:
On the difference between discipline and will-power: “Discipline is the capacity to exercise self-control, manage emotions, and suppress urges. Whereas, willpower is the capacity to control oneself”
On memory: “The greatest thing that memorizing can do is assist you to retain a small amount of knowledge in a short period.”
On waiting: “Waiting pays off, as they say.” [no they don’t]
On… I don’t really know: “Successful people are aware that time does not carve itself.”
On prioritisation: “In order to perform activities in the right order, one should rank them according to their importance.”
On preparation: “Unfortunately, setbacks frequently occur when you are least prepared, so plan accordingly.”
On flow: “Should you decide to accept it, the objective is to enter a flow state, which is a state in which you are “in the flow”.”
On music: “Some people find that sad music is “beautiful,” as it makes them feel better.”
On rewards: “You might choose to treat yourself to a favorite snack or television show in exchange for achieving the short-term objective of sending three business-related emails every day.”
Feels like it says a lot without actually saying that much. While the book covers a lot of interesting topics, I don’t think it adds a ton of value to the reader. Additionally, I think there is a lot of repetitive content, which takes away from the impact the book tries to have.
I gotta admit that this book isn’t the best self help book I’ve read in my time. And this review will explain what I say that, so lets get into the review.
First of all the writing style feels like it was written by ChatGPT, because it bombards us with information without showing any examples. In a way reading this book felt worse than reading a high school textbook which really says something.
At the same time this books gives us the some very stupid sentences like “Successful people are aware that time does not carve itself”, “Waiting pays off, as they say” or “Should you decide to accept it, the objective is to enter a flow state, which is a state in which you are “in the flow”.
Everything this books says feels like it was written by either a toddler or the worst AI from 1970s (a metaphor).
The only good thing about this book is that it is a quick read. I personally read it in one sitting on a rainy Sunday.
If you are looking for a very bad self help book, then this one takes the number one place in my opinion because I haven’t read worse self help book so far at least in my life.
