Liv's friend loved to flirt, to dance, to be a girl; until three years ago, when a night out almost got her killed. After a long and difficult recovery, she returned, ready to forget and reclaim her life. But life will never let her forget. Nothing has changed, except her, and nothing will ever be the same.
Enjoy this short story from mystery/thriller author Jenny Hilborne.
San Francisco is one of my favorite places and the setting for most of my mystery/thrillers. It's diverse, exciting, and easy for a killer to move around!

For a short piece, this story has incredible power. I found it compelling and was sucked in from the opening paragraph. The character development and plot are exceptionally well done, right up to the twist at the end. I would love to see more from the main character.
I was already a fan of Jenny Hilborne's novels. For those of you yet to read her work, this is a perfect introduction.
I received a free download of Jenny Hilborne's short story "False Pretense" to read on my Kindle. This is the second novel by this author. Her first novel "Murder and Madness" was amazing. After that I was hooked.
False Pretense was a very moving short story, the character was real and believable. The story takes place in Laguna Beach, California, where two girls decide to go to the club on a Saturday night. But when a creep or offender on the dance floor, with his paws all over someone else starts undressing her from a distance, she feels uncomfortable and tells her girlfriend Liv that she is going home.Liv tells her it is too dangerous to walk alone to her car, a 10 minute walk from the club. But she says she has her car keys in her hands for protection. But she had been a victim in the past, and has a 5 inch scar on her neck as a reminder. After that she carried a pocketknife in her purse, after her attack.. The man in the Club reminded her of her attacker "Grant", that had given her the look over.As she walked to the car she caught a whiff of his scent...he was following her.But she didn't run. When he got close enough he said to her "You wanted me back there."
She knew what it was like to be a victim...and she knew what she had to do.
I loved it.I wished it had been a full novel.Looking forward to reading her new book next "Hide & Seek".This is an amazing author who is so talented. One of my favourite authors. Thanks so much Jenny.
I've been meaning to read something by Jenny Hilborne for a while as I have heard great things about her novels. Given that I have limited reading time available, I was happy to find she had released this short story, something that wouldn't take much time to read. I really enjoyed this story. It's well written and entertaining. It's a compelling read, well-paced, and deals with an important social issue. Although it's very short, Hilborne has managed to explore the subject of how a victim might be affected by trauma, in an interesting way. The ending is quite chilling. I was left with a feeling that this story could be the beginning of a potential novel... there's lots of food for thought here. My only complaint would be that it's too short. I didn't want it to end! This Kindle edition also contains bonus material; the first 2 chapters from Hilborne's novel Hide and Seek (Jackson mystery) I would recommend this story to those who enjoy thrillers, and as a great introduction to Hilborne's writing. I am now looking forward to reading more of this writer's work.
This was such a brief story with no point. The main character was a victim of some crime by a male, doesn't specify although you she does name her assailant by his first name only, which was weird. She is out at a club with a friend when a weird guy starts watching her and then she wants to leave. Nothing makes sense in this story. The characters are unreal and the situation is so ridiculous that I had to go back and read it twice just to make sure that I didn't miss a big part that made it make sense, I didn't. There is nothing that you can take away from this story besides a lighter wallet. I'm glad I didn't pay for this because the story was only six pages and the rest of the 18 were filled with a preview to her next book. I know it's just a short story, but even short stories can be done well. This one was not.
Wow...this suspenseful short story really packs a powerful punch! I downloaded a free copy of this novella on my Kindle and I must say I wasn't disappointed with the content.
"False Pretense" by Author Jenny Hilborne is sure to please those who enjoy the mystery/thriller genre. It is well-written and descriptive right from the first page to the last. The pace is fast moving and enticing. Although, very short in length, it provides a good idea of the author's talent. It left me wanting more....and from both an author's point of view as well as a reader's, that's a very good thing!
Powerful story about a crime victim, good but way too short. It easily could have been the prequel introducing you to Liv, who turns from prey to predator stalking night clubs looking for her next victim to save other women from becoming a victim of sex crimes.
