A HIGHLAND CHIEFTAIN Recently freed from captivity in London Tower, Rae Mackinnon returns to the turbulent Highlands and claims his place as laird of Dunraven Castle. As he grapples with clan rivalries and divisiveness within his own family, he is confronted with a startling discovery — a beautiful woman from a distant future, delivered through the portals of Time and into his bed . . .
A VICTORIAN LADY Swept up in the summer social rounds, Julia Hargrove accompanies her aunt and cousins on an excursion to Scotland, to an ancient castle which has hosted no visitors for two decades — until now. Rumors abound of unusual occurrences at Dunraven Castle — occurrences that are centered in the bedchamber Julia now occupies, where a rugged Highland warrior materializes from the past . . .
DRAWN IRRESTIBLY THROUGH THE PORTALS OF TIME What mysteries does Dunraven hold? What secret opens the temporal door, allowing Julia and Rae to reach across the centuries to claim a few stolen moments and nurture a blossoming love? But how long can the rules of Time be broken before the door shuts forevermore?

I love historical romance with a touch of time travel on it. This is an old one and started like any other historical time travel romance. We have Julia from the present and Rae from the past. Their paths are not supposed to meet ever but because of a phenomenon called Time Slip, one was able to slip back and forward in time.
It took me a while to finish this. I stopped reading at some points and even finished two books before I was able to resume and finally finish this book. It just felt a bit narrative for my liking.
The story has paranormal and science mixed into it. The how's and the why's of time slips are a bit vague for me. I did not feel connected to the story. Maybe because I stopped reading too many times.
I love Julia and Rae's chemistry. The other characters are a bit one dimensional. So why the high rating? I did enjoy reading this. ❤
I thought the idea was cool. I am not much for time travel stories because it usually means some contemporary elements, which I really don't care for. But this book has time travel between 15th and 19th centuries. Out of curiosity, I read it.
This book for me is a missed opportunity. The author chose to write about how they travel back and forth in time, made this novel more about time travel than romance. A lot of descriptions on how Julia navigated her way in the 19th century, trying to figure what was going on and the elderly gentlemen who were interested in science, who worked with Julia to find out more about time travels. The romance between Rae and Julia became secondary in the story.
I thought the idea was novel. But there is not enough information about the lead characters for me.
After first reading “Shades of the Past” which I loved, I had high expectations about “A Slip in Time“, and for a second time I was swept away by the phenomenal story that Kathleen Kirkwood offers us here. For me, the dual settings of the late Victorian era combined with Scotland in the early 1400′s makes it even more compelling; in fact, these are my two favorite eras. And what a treat!
The author has woven here the most beautiful, romantic, magical and intense love story that you could ever imagine, the kind of love that survives the test of time … say, more than four hundred years …!
In the fall of 1893, Julia Hargrove is a very lonely young woman who has lost her parents and has to resort to living with her mother’s family who do not even bother to conceal their contempt towards her. Her dear mother made the unpardonable faux pas to marry only a baronet …! En route with her family to Dunraven in the Highlands, she’s pretty much left to herself once the party arrives at their destination. By the merest chance, or is it fate!? she’s given a rather isolated room in the oldest part of the castle, the South Tower “the ancient heart of Dunraven” …
Dunraven Castle in the fall of 1437. After thirteen years spent as a hostage in London, Rae Mackinnon, the rightful Laird of Dunraven Castle, is released after the death of King James I and is back home. When he was taken south for political reasons, he was only sixteen years old. As he returns, he isn’t only confronted with old feuds but also with new ones; he has a lot to catch up with.
It all starts in the south tower’s room and in that imposing carved bed, whose color trappings change from blue to red with each “tear in the veil of time” ….
This book was kind of addictive because after each slip of time and encounter between Julia and Rae, which at the beginning were very short, I just couldn’t wait for them to be reunited again and again. Julia and Rae totally absorbed me in their world and their story. There’s more than just attraction or sexual tension, there something that pulls them towards one another like a magnet, an invisible and intangible link that nothing and no one will ever be able to sever.
Julia and Rae are both very strong, courageous and determined characters but they both have their own vulnerability and I loved them right from the start. They are so vividly and brilliantly detailed that it feels like they are real. I found them SO touching.
The author cleverly and skillfully concocted a very interesting, plausible and intriguing theory that gives our two heroes the extraordinary capacity to slip through time. She also gives some very interesting insights into everyday life and political intrigues and feuds in medieval Scotland. Both Victorian and medieval eras are very subtly combined. There’s also an entire cast of colorful characters, good and bad, that gives greater depth and excitement to this tale.
I literally fell under the spell of Ms. Kirkwood’s so magically and richly detailed descriptions; they work wonders with my imagination and emotions. There’s not a lot of writers who are able to elicit such a response in me, I can count them on the fingers of one hand and she’s one of them.
There’s a lot of twist and turns until the very end and I stayed uncertain as to what was going to happen, which is a very good thing. It was such a compelling and engrossing story to read. I can only highly recommend it and I give it 5 stars.
I won this book through the GoodReads first reads programme.
What is it about time travel romances, really? Is there something more appealing about older values, the ideals of the past and the fascinating world it was? Perhaps, but that's overlooking the fact that human nature is irrevocably human nature. This isn't the sort of book that I would typically pick up and read...
Nevertheless, I admire Kathleen Kirkwood for her attention to detail with the historical aspects of the novel. She did a marvelous job of capturing the shifting syntaxes of Victorian speech and, well, Scots. She did a good job of highlighting the appealing nature of the past without romanticizing it overly much. In particular, I liked how she actually showcased just how advanced people where in the late 1400s. Barbarians? Hardly.
While this book wasn't to my taste, I loved the history. This is a historical romance that is a great bit more respectable than I expected this genre to be.
Also, points for using real Scottish Gaelic. So many points.
Thank goodness for finding a new author and a treasure of a book.
I was initially more wary of this book as I was concerned it would be paranormal, but after reading a sample of A SLIP IN TIME I was certain of two things: 1) This was not a frightening paranormal, and 2) I was going to 1-click and read it in one sitting.
A fresh twist to a delightful romance that will capture your attention and keep it straight through all the angst to the HEA.
5 Stars and a resounding "yes!" to more of this author's books for me.
wow... I don't know what I expected but this isn't what I expected!
The whole time travel was fascinating. the author took paid a lot of attention to the little details.
Although this book was more about time travelling than romance...it worked. I don't think it need more romance in it, as that would have made it like other romantic historic books.
Really enjoyed it! looking forward to read more by the author
I'm reading romances more often because bookbub sends me a list with a free or discount book recommendation everyday. This novel was a very sweet romance in every sense of the word. I fully enjoyed it although it had me just a tad stressed out at times.
What I loved about it was the handsome Scott, he was dreamy and I wish he were mine. There were some funny moments in this book. You'll see what I'm talking about when the MC's first slip in time takes place. The heroine was smart and likable. My heart ached for them at times. It took a lot for me not to skip to the end because I wanted them to have the HEA so bad.
Well, it's one of the Galbadon clone books; at least I think it dates after those books (though Kirkwood might well have independently concocted her tale of Victorian maiden and handsome Scot from the olden days quite on her own). It's well paced, it has very overdrawn but nonetheless satisfying characters, and it was fun to read and well plotted enough that I wondered how on earth our author was going to resolve all the trials and tribulations and time conundrums. And she did. (the sex scenes, however, were..well, they were pretty funny, I thought, classic heaving and clinging and tongues mating).
I have read a number of time travel books, but I am impressed with this particular book. Not only is it captivating, in regards to the story and characters, it is looking at time travel in a very scientific way, using the guise of the story, to put forth a well thought out theory. It is this side of the tale that fascinates me. I applaud the writer for their ingenuity and will look for more books from this author.
Title/Cover: The title is what drew me in. I am a huge fan of time travel books. I love that glimpse into the past.
Characters: I love Julia & Rae. They had so many challenges they needed to face.
Plot: Julia stumbles into a time slip and meets Rae. Julia, Rae and the Society for Psychical Research scramble to figure out how the time slips work before time runs out for them.
Overall: I loved this book. I especially love how things worked out for everyone at the end. I will definitely be looking forward to more by this author.
I love time travel romance and this was one of the better ones. Julia was sure what was going on when her bedding colors change from blue to red but not only that, there is a man in her room with long hair and wearing a old fashioned kilt. Rae didn't know if the blond women was a ghost or a witch. She kept coming and going. Suspense, intrigue and romance keep you turning the pages.
This book started out just plain awful. The writing was awful and the story was lame and it was just yuck. But I'm waiting on hold books from overdrive to come up, so I kept reading anyway and it did get better. I still feel like the writing wasn't great, but the story itself was decent enough to keep me reading. Parts of it were very predictable though. I don't really recommend it, unless you like badly written fluff.
This book can only be described as captivatingly Magnificent! I can only marvel at the way I as a reader get to know the vivid characters and stunning surroundings, and I dare say its done in the most compelling way. Heart pinch, and breath held at several times I can only conclude the this story captures the very essence of love that transcends everything, even time it self.
This was an interesting time-travel novel as one of the other continually shifted time periods. Added to this pressure, there were plots afoot in both periods that had dire consequences. This made it a real page turner.
What a good book! I've been reading it all day into the late night unable to stop. This book is gripping and oh so good! Loved every bit of it the past, the present and the history. The bit of magic was great. Truly happy to have found this book.
I this book. I like the characters and the storyline. It was a good Adventure Romance. It was also source of information about the history of the Highlands.
I liked the book but had to take breaks from Julia. It really irritated me that she didn’t let Lord Muir use the ring. He had spent the last 20 years investigating time slips. All the society men at the castle should have had a chance. They had passion but I thought Julia weak.
Interesting characters, well fleshed out main story, and side lines. I really enjoyed Kathleen Kirkwood's "A Slip In Time'. I will be looking for more.
What would you do if you encountered a " time slip" ...follow along as Miss Kirkwood introduces you to Julia and Rae's love across time ...you won't be disappointed ...😉😊
Great story how love can transcend time. Beautiful woman and gorgeous highlander just what a great story needs. Great historical and supernatural story.
