A wounded warrior. An abandoned countess. Resentment and festering feelings covered by the politeness and social niceties of an arranged marriage. Robert, Eighth Earl of Aberleigh and Georgiana, Lady Aberleigh had been married for six years before he returned, grievously injured, from Waterloo. Will the combined efforts of his family, their staff, and the village rector help him to find peace in the estate he reluctantly inherited? Will the duties of Aberleigh Abbey come to be as important to him as fighting for the king? Will his countess forgive him if and when they do?

The concept of this book was a new story topic for me. Not long into her marriage, young Lady Georgiana Aberleigh has been left alone to raise a son and fulfill her duties as head of the household at Aberleigh Abbey. Her husband Robert, Lord of Aberleigh, left her to fulfill his duty to fight for the king. Now that he has finally returned home many years later, he knows he will be expected to take on his duties as Earl. Unfortunately for Georgianna, he returns home reluctantly and has to learn to live with a serious wound. Used to being a military man, his transition is a difficult one and takes several months. I liked the characters in this book and the fact that Georgianna was a strong, competent, responsible, take charge woman in the early 1800s. Her son Richard is an interesting character! I enjoyed reading this historical romance and seeing how the main characters changed over time.
