About the author

Cody McFadyen was an international bestselling author of six thrillers. Five of those thrillers are centered around FBI special agent Smoky Barrett, who hunts serial killers. In 2011 his stand alone thriller Der Menschenmacher was published in Germany with no English translation. Before releasing book five in the Smoky Barrett series in 2016, McFadyen took four years off to care for his ailing parents. According to his German publisher he was the father of a daughter and lived in Southern California. Cody McFadyen passed away in May 2023.

本筋の事件自体は面白かったが、あちことで齟齬や粗さが気になって没頭できなかった。

上巻は無駄に色ボケ描写が多く、下巻の展開は粗雑で都合が良すぎ、全体を通してだらだらと説明しすぎ。有能な設定の割には、予告や脅迫が来てもろくに警戒しない主人公 (過去にも被害に遭ってるのに)。そしてこの主人公、こんなに感情的で独善的だっけ? (そうだったかも?) 思考に整合性がなくて苛立ちを感じた。

あくまでも事件は興味深いので一気に読めるのだけど、犯人の背景や動機も弱すぎて、そんな事件を起こす説得力が足りない。後に残るのはショッキングな描写と主人公の身勝手さ。今まで読後感の良さが気に入っていただけにがっかり。そろそろ見切りどきだろうか。
