Updated cover and re-edited with new material! "This flower I give to you has one petal because I never want you to question my love for you. If you pick the petal off, you will be able to say 'he loves me,' as there are no other petals for you to say 'he loves me not.'" -Jonas After Darian Moon loses her boyfriend to a motorcycle accident, she finds her somber town too much to handle, so she moves from Texas to Oklahoma to live with her grandmother for the summer. Strange things start to happen after she meets Chayton Swift, her grandmother's college-age neighbor and handyman. Darian soon learns Chayton has a few supernatural abilities, one of which is seeing and communicating with ghosts. Darian's boyfriend, Jonas, happens to be one of them, and he's there to warn her that evil entities do exist. But so do heroes.
Kristi Ayers is the author of One Petal Flower, Nev, Irresistible (a novella), Strings of the Muse, and Falling in the Blue Hour. She lives in Oklahoma with her husband, kids, and pets. When she isn't writing she is working as a Registered Nurse in the NICU or traveling.
I won't claim to be a fan of this new genre of Paranormal Romance, but I am a fan of a good story where the characters are memorable and your emotions get pushed and pulled. Should you agree with me, I highly recommend One Petal Flower. Darian Moon is the epitome of a jaded teenager, and with good cause. Miss Ayers explores strong emotions, the aftermath of losing a first love. Something bound to irreparably damage a young soul. What if we had someone that could give us one last glance, one last word to that lost soul? Miss Ayers stays off the beaten path of all the Twilight followers and makes her story unique and different while pleasing her audience with some of our most favorite paranormal beings. Just when I thought I'd figured out the plot line, I was taken by surprise and at the end, I was left wanting more. For the teenager inside all of us, particularly those of us who might have faced an irreversible circumstance, One Petal Flower delivered a memorable scenario with characters with whom it's easy to connect. My only complaint? I wanted more of Darian, Chayton, the mysterious Sterling, the enigmatic Nova, and of course, Montana. I look forward to delving into the lives of Miss Ayers' unique characters in her future works.
I thoroughly enjoyed this read! It was very complex, well thought out, and well written. I highly recommend it. This story will have you reeling from page one.
"This flower I give to you has one petal because I never want you to question my love for you. If you pick the petal off you will be able to say 'he loves me' as there are no other petals for you to say 'he loves me not'."
Darian has recently lost her boyfriend, Jonas, in a terrible accident. Now she is shipped off to live with her grandmother while her parents start new lives for themselves. Here Darian will have to decide if the life she has is worth living for…or will life be better spent with Jonas…in death. Along the way, Darian will meet people who will want to help her choose life and some that want her to pick death. Will someone she encounter be worth sticking around for? Or will death have the final say?
One Petal Flower was a fantastic read. I fell for this book and I fell hard. How could I not? It had a unique story line and held some awesome secrets within its pages. I was actually a little surprised at some of the books revelations. And have I ever mentioned I love to be surprised when reading a book? Well I do. Just when you think you are starting to understand a little about where the author is taking the story, she throws a curve ball at you. It was perfect and I never saw them coming.
I really enjoyed the characters and all they brought to the story. Again, just when you think something is happening between Darian and a certain guy...BAM! Another guy gets to walk in and vie for Darian's attention. And usually I am all ‘Really? Another one?’ when an author brings in more than 2 guys that fall for a girl in a book. But Ayers did a great job at unfolding the whole romance part of the story. Each guy, in my opinion, were great guys. Yes, even the wicked one. I won’t say who my favorite character was though. Because he is one of those curve balls I mentioned. Just wait…you’ll see.
I strongly suggest you read One Petal Flower if you love reading about the supernatural/paranormal. Ayers brings ghosts and werewolves together in this marvelous read that I found hard to put down. I think fans of Kelley Armstrong’s Darkest Powers series will really enjoy this one.
I started this book, and I was so saddened for Darian. To lose anyone is devastating. To lose your first love at such a young age...my heart went out to her. In her quest to ease the pain in her heart, Darian begins a journey that only the strongest of souls can survive. And she has a strong soul. The author did a wonderful job of surprising me with this book. A couple of chapters in and I was starting to predict the ending, but oh no no...the author was not going to make it that easy on me. I was delighted with the ingenuity of this tale and with the overall writing. "Twilight closed the day like cinders slowly losing their glow in an overnight fire." Just beautiful!
I was really pleased with the path the book took. When I so-called, "predicted" the ending, I just wasn't quite comfortable with what I thought was going to happen, and the author came through! This book is actually worth a re-read because of the complex characters who all had stories to tell, and who were all equally intriguing.
Romantic, scary, poignant. One Petal Flower was an awesome read.
This book hooked me from the moment I started reading and I couldn't put it down. I was captivated by the story line and loved the characters. I was so disappointed when I got to the end because I really wanted more. If you are a fan of the paranormal then this is a must read book for sure!
2.75 stars. I read the synopsis and said to myself: this story must be full of feelings, but it was only at the beginning, then it turned into something I didn't expect. Darian was a selfish girl with her emotions and Chayton to be her future partner barely came out, Montana took the spotlight and no wonder, he was a perfect guy.
**** Purchased this book on my own, review posted on Beyond the Valley of the Books blog****
I saw some people talking about this book on Facebook and was intrigued. I purchased it right after I read the synopsis, not prepared for everything this author had planned. What drew me in was a 17 year old girl, one of the few who understand what true love is, the kind that is meant to last a life time and the heart break that occurs. This love is what will either help her survive or lead her to death.
When Darian lost Jonas in an accident her world began to crumble one brick at a time. Finding herself with her grandmother now because her parents felt it was time for them to divorce and find their own lives, Darian wondered if it wouldn’t be best to just die and be with Jonas. Their love was true, pure and meant to be. He would give her a flower with only one petal because he wanted to make sure she knew there was no other choice than “He loves me”. The idea of being the new kid at school and starting over, knowing your own parents can’t support you during a traumatic event was overwhelming, especially without Jonas.
In the midst of her grief strange things begin to happen. Chayton and his sister Nova will begin the emotional tug of war with Darian in order to help her move on and connect with Jonas. Soon other beings will become part of this battle. As Darian works at keeping her focus and moving on, her heart is constantly battered with reminders and promises of Jonas. The prize in this war isn’t just her peace of mind; it is for her heart and soul as well. How hard can she fight to save herself when what she really wants has already died and moved on to the other side?
You will find elements of ghost, energies both positive and negative and other paranormal, sci-fi themes, all tied up into one short book that will steal your heart and capture your mind. You won’t be able to predict what is going to happen as the author constantly takes you on new paths to the end. My favorite benefit was she kept the deep message of losing the one you loved and what would you do for one more hug, conversation, just one more minute to say you loved them as the constant thread throughout the book.
The author’s talent and brilliance became clear to me when she won me over. I am not a big fan of books centered on teenagers or young adults. There are so many out there, I feel for myself they have become repetitive in the plots. I am also not a huge fan of paranormal or sci-fi themes unless they have a solid plot that I as a human can connect with. What Kristi Ayers did was take an event that we have all had to deal with, the loss of someone we loved and center it on teenagers and young adults. Keeping the emotions raw and intense, she approached this plot with deep thinking, investing characters and meaningful conversations. In short, she kept her young characters mature and classy without needing the petty drama that you find in most books today and I am very grateful. I didn’t feel like I wasted my time reading this book, I felt like I had gained insight to my own pain surrounding some major losses in my life. I will be certainly watching for more Kristi Ayers books in the future and have let my 16 year old borrow this book. So far she is loving it
**Update August 2020** Just reread the updated version of this novel and absolutely loved it! I will not give anything away but the end itself has a low key change in the final scene that packs a punch and leaves the reader demanding a follow-up and pronto! I am also still hoping for a miracle and Jonas returns at some point giving Darian the ultimate, crazy dilemma of choosing between several amazing young men. Kristi's updates didn't deter me from the original as I was totally immersed in the story, the characters, the dialogue and the romance. The story was relatable to teens and paranormal fans of any age. I am oh so hoping for a sequel!
One Petal Flower is a wonderfully written debut novel by Kristi Ayers, about a young woman, Darian, haunted by her true love in a unique fashion that leads her on a very intriguing journey of finding out who she really is inside, and out.
First, I am a huge fan of paranormal/ghost love stories so I couldn't wait to get started on this one. The phrase that immediately grabbed me and held on was in the beginning of the book, Darian's dead boyfriend, Jonas, tells her, "I miss you Dari." Just reading that small sentence tugged at my heartstrings and there was no looking back. I'm a sucker for lost, ghostly lovers. (Btw-I love the name Jonas).
One Petal Flower is a very descriptive tale which combines romance and an edginess that follows throughout the book. I really liked the characters, from Darian's grandmother, to her old friends/potential loves and even the bad guy. He was a great addition, since in a paranormal fantasy, you have to throw in the bad guy! I devoured the scenes with Darian and Montana and the epilogue was just perfect. Without giving anything away, there is a bit of a love triangle that fits in at just the right times, and is unexpected. So there. You'll have to read it to find out more!
The characters were developed well and I was glued to the pages. I enjoyed Chayton's loyalty, Montana's masculinity and Sterling's plain old evilness. I love that the teens are not your average, predictable guys and gals. They speak intelligently and their dialogue is snappy. With the flurry of trendy characters out there in the paranormal YA genre, I love fictional kids who speak eloquently (ala John Green style). When it's a fantasy, why not make them whatever you want them to be?
Kristi has crafted a suspenseful, haunting book with her detailed writing style and a main character who longs for closure in her life in more ways than one. I fell in love with Jonas, invisible or not, and felt the couple's bond. I would love to read a sequel to One Petal Flower, and I highly recommend this novel to fans of paranormal fantasy. This is one addition to my shelves that I'll think about long after I'm finished.
**Disclaimer: Kristi Ayers gave me One Petal Flower in exchange for an honest review. I was not paid to review this and all thoughts are my own and subjective.
My feelings toward this book are kind of conflicted. There were aspects that I liked about it, but if one big thing had been changed, I think it would have been so much better: I wish it had been more drawn out.
The content was good--I liked the paranormal topic, the basis of each character, the imagery--but because it was such a short book, I felt like I didn't understand where the characters were coming from. The relationships and plot felt rushed and it was like all of a sudden, people were declaring their love for each other. It wasn't a bad timeline of events considering the length of the book (194 pages) but I think the book could have benefited if there was more content. Purposeful content, of course, but more, nonetheless.
On One Petal Flower's topic: this book was about ghosts and revenants. It was the closest I've come to a zombie book so that was interesting and I like books that incorporate heaven/the "in between", so I liked the book for those aspects. A smaller thing I liked about the book was that Kristi Ayers gave her characters not-your-average-Joe names. My favorite part of the story was that the M.C., Darian, was eventually able to find peace after her boyfriend's passing.
The book had all the right elements there, but it just needed more to it. Had their been more interaction, time, and growth between the characters, we could have gotten to know them better. Thus, the events and emotions in the book would have transitioned more smoothly and I would have felt more connected. I think I would have loved the book because apart from the length, the writing itself was good. The imagery and word choice were good. Maybe a little wordy at times, but for the most part good!
There were some parts of the story I would have liked an elaboration on (the revenants and supernatural). Some things I would have preferred been left to the reader to make his/her own assumptions (the reason behind someone's actions/words via Darian's thoughts). I actually think it would have been really cool if One Petal Flower was written from dual POVs (Darian's and Chayton's) because then we could have learned about/connected more with Jonas, and understood Chayton and all the paranormal stuff more. As it turns out, Kristi Ayers is writing a sequel to One Petal Flower in Chayton's POV so now we may get just that!
"This flower I give to you has one petal because I never want you to question my love for you. If you pick the petal off you will be able to say 'he loves me' as there are no other petals for you to say 'he loves me not'."
Wow right. What girl wouldn't love to hear this by tho one person she loves the most. I sure would. I'd be his instantly after that.
One Petal Flower. How do I begin? Darian's love Jonas is unexpectedly killed in a motorcycle accident. One minute they are alone with each other in a beautiful field and the next he's snatched away from her with nothing more but her memories of him to keep her warm. To make matters worse her stupid parents choose this time to split up and move away. Not only from each other but from Darian as well. She's sent off to live with her grandmother. A grandmother she hasn't seen sine she was a little girl. If Darian didn't feel alone before its way worse now. Her loss of Jonas and the only life she knew consumes her as she spirals into a deep depression. She wants nothing to do with anyone and to make matters worse she thinks she's going crazy. Sometimes when she's alone she feels a sensation as if someone's is touching her and familiar smells that remind her of times alone with Jonas. She must be going nuts right? Maybe not...
Here I'm thinking that Darian really is going nuts. That she's just so lost and lonely that her sadness is making her feel things she only wishes she still could. Oh no, there is so much more going on than that. Darian is actually thrown into a world she never knew existed before Jonas died. A world where wolves are real and strange un-dead dead people are trying to get her to join them.
This book took a totally unexpected turn and I loved it. Darian started out as a broken soul and ends up finding out there is so much more to life than she could of ever imagined. What a great and exciting read that kept me wanting to know what was around the next corner. Boy was it ever great finding out.
Oh, this was such a cute book! I was alerted to it by the author, because her story features Native American and paranormal elements, and my own book does too! I'm glad I got to read One Petal Flower. In this case, the story is set in Oklahoma and features a half-Native American girl with a tragic past (Darian's boyfriend died recently), a cute Native American guy (Chayton) and his somewhat dark-side sister Nova. The book reminded me of Elizabeth Chandler's early work (ghost stories with sweet romance for a younger YA audience) and I always love reading her work. Chayton (the Native American guy) turns out to be able to see dead people, and he sees Jonas (the dead boyfriend) hovering around Darian all the time. He wants to help her communicate with Jonas the safe way, but his sister Nova has other ideas and introduces Darian to a dark, mysterious stranger called Sterling who claims to have an easier way to communicate with the dead... The story has great pacing and flow, the characters are fascinating (my personal favourite was Chayton) and it was just a great story that I would have absolutely loved as a teenager (and still liked very much, by the way!). The only thing that distracted me was the change from past tense to present tense sometimes - maybe an editing glitch? I also didn't think Darian's fascination with Sterling was entirely believable, because I found he is kind of a creepy slimeball in the beginning and I couldn't see why she'd fall for his flatteries, but maybe that's just me! All in all, I would definitely recommend this book to a teen audience and people who want something in this genre that is off the beaten path. (I know the author is part of a paranormal investigation team, so the entire book has a certain realistic ring to it... am curious to see a sequel to this book too!)
One Petal Flower is not the book I was expecting, and not in a bad way. I expected a love triangle of sorts; what I wasn't expecting was to be drawn into a world where the potential for paranormal is all around, seen or unseen, and our minds are brought to the edge of that precipice time and time again.
Darian Moon's boyfriend, Jonas, leaves this world before his time. As people with unfinished business are apt to do, he doesn't want to cross over immediately and prefers to stay for a bit. Darian is having enough trouble dealing with his untimely death when she is thrown for another loop and shipped off to live with her grandmother shortly after the funeral.
As I read, I found myself bouncing back and forth between who was the good friend and who was the bad. I'm a fan of a book that can keep me guessing; this one did just that.
Without giving away the story or inadvertently handing out spoilers, I'd just like to say Kristi Ayers surprised me and I'm certainly looking forward to reading more from her in the future.
I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review... my advice, its worth the low price for the entertainment it brings.
This is the first book I've ever read by Kristi but it is wonderful. Although werewolves and vampires have been increasingly popular in the past few years, she created an original story line that I enjoyed reading. For the record, I didn't think about Twilight once. :] Darian is a unique character that I connected with very quickly. Her thoughts at many points in the story were not unlike mine, so it made it even easier for me to understand her actions. The only negative thing I have to say about this story is that it wasn't long enough! I was surprised at several times in the story and I didn't want to put the book down. Keep going Kristi! :]
I loved this book! it was constantly moving and changing and leading me down one path only to change directions! Kristi Ayers is a poet... and she paints a picture so vivid... makes you want to be there! The story has a couple unanswered questions.. but it doesn't detract from the overall book... I don't want to say too much.. I went into it only knowing she wrote paranormal..and in the beginning thought maybe she tried a different genre with this book. Turns out I was just impatient... the story needed to unfold... and am so glad I read this....
This book was a great young adult paranormal read that contained werewolves, ghosts, and a revenant (a zombie-like creature). Although it was only 195 pages, it was still a book that grabbed my attention and I didn't want to put it down. I loved how some of the characters were Native American and the setting was in Oklahoma. It was a love story that took a turn that I didn't see coming, which made it unique and unforgettable. A must read for anyone who likes paranormal love stories.
In a time when so many paranormal romances are mere variances of The Twilight Saga, Ms. Ayers put a lot of thought into creating something more original. Definitely a story anyone who's lost someone before their time can appreciate. The added paranormal elements have substance and a certain turn took me completely by surprise. A job well done told in a fresh, contemporary voice.
I really, really liked this book. I finished it within a few days. This is the first ParaNormal Romance book I have read, but it won't be the last. The characters were intriguing. The storyline was great. The writing was exceptional. Kristi did a tremendous job!! I'm looking forward to her next book!!
I was riveted by this book & wanted to know more, so I read all day! Very sweet relationships & some realy scary ones! We have a new type of paranormal "monster". Very good read.
This book had me enthralled from page 1 until the last page. You will feel so many things while reading this book - sadness, anger, love, hope. Darian is 17 and has lost her boyfriend Jonas because of a motorcycle accident. Jonas and Darian had a very sweet story. "This flower I give to you has one petal because I never want you to question my love for you. If you pick the petal off, you will be able to say 'he loves me,' as there are no other petals for you to say 'he loves me not.'" -Jonas Jonas was wise beyond his years, and he can't cross over until he knows Darian will be ok. Chayton is able to see and converse with Jonas, much to Darian's dismay since she can't see him. There's another force that wants Darian to think she will see Jonas again, but is that true? Will she give up her life to be back with Jonas or will she find new love and life? This book has wolves and other paranormals in it. To me it was a fascinating read as I feel I learned so many more things, and the characters were amazing. I'd love more books on the minor characters as I believe they could have interesting stories to tell as well. I will definitely be looking to read more from this author.
"This flower I give to you has one petal because I never want you to question my love for you. If you pick the petal off, you will be able to say 'he loves me,' as there are no other petals for you to say 'he loves me not.'" -Jonas
That quote made me swoon but it was also heartbreaking to see Darian go through heartache when she looses Jonas. As she tries to deal with her grief she goes to stay with her Grandma. When she meets Chayton she finds out she may be able to communication with Jonas.
This read will put your emotions to the test. I also loved that it has some twists that surprised me. The characters are great. You meet many interesting characters that keep you guessing. It was interesting enough to keep the pages turning.
The reason I rated this 3.5 stars is because there were some things that happened in the story that I felt were not expanded on enough. Also the relationship between Darian and Chayton, you could feel the deep feelings they had for each other but I felt like they did not spend enough time together in the book. Because of this it felt like there was something missing and could have had more attention in the story. This is just my opinion because this is a good paranormal read with great characters.
I am quiet new to the paranormal genre (It's not typical genre I am attracted to both as a review and reading enthusiast) but I was hoping to dabble back into the ya romance which is my OG favourite genre and found the paranormal part added a good dimension to the progress of the story.
I really felt for Darian as she experienced heartbreak from the passing of her boyfriend and how she is sent to live with her grandmother where she meets Chayton. His abilities and their connection set the tone for the journey of the story. I do like the character together and story development .
The story of One Petal Flower was fresh and took some turns that I wasn't expecting which kept my interest as a reader. It is a good read and I'm glad to make the jump to a genre that is different to the one I normally go for as the story is a good one.
At 17, losing anyone is heartbreaking. Losing your first love is soul-breaking. Darian's boyfriend has died in a motorcycle accident and she is unsure how she is going to move forward. Moving to her grandmother's for the summer is, hopefully, the place where she will be able to find some peace and begin to heal. She quickly learns that her grandmother's handyman, Chayton, is more than what he appears to be. This story is about Darian and finding a way to move on...but the story is honest in that it isn't as cut and dry as it sounds. There are constant reminders of the past and memories that pop up on a regular basis. Add in the paranormal aspect of this story and Darian's moving on is not that easy. This was a good story that I found myself immersed in from start to finish. It is a good mix of harsh realities with a paranormal twist. Definitely worth a read!
Darian Moon has lost the love of her life Jonah. Her world has shattered as she tries to cope with the loss. So much that she has considered joining him. Then she learns that he is still earthbound and unable to move on until her heart finds someone to hold it as he did. I had to admit that at first I thought the story was going to be depressing and angsty. So not the case. It comes with a lot of emotion and conflict that seems to lead the story. Just when you think you have figured out what is going to happen, your whole thinking is shattered. It was way different than I thought. This book is worth the read. It is a well written story that will keep you hanging on till the end.
Loved it. First off, it was the ghostly love that drew me in, but after I’d started reading, it became so much more!
Darian loses her love to a car accident. We read about her journey back to life, and how difficult she’s finding not having Jonas around. She moves to her grandmothers, and meets Chayton, and thus begins our adventure!
Really loved meeting Montana, and I think I’m secretly a little sad, that this wasn’t a reverse harem situation, but overall I immensely enjoyed this book, and heck yeah I recommend.
What if you have a chance to be with the one you lost? Darian lost Jonas the love of her young life and her depression was consuming her so her parents sent her to her grandmother so see if distance would help. She meets Chayton a neighbor helping her grandmother out and he can speak to Jonas but someone else can too and he wants her for his own. I usually don’t read high school books but this one had me interested and I really enjoyed it.
Darian loses her high first love to a motorcycle accident. She felt like her heart has shattered into a million pictures and she felt like her soul was dying. Her parents send her to her grandma's for the summer maybe even for longer. They didn't know what else to do with her. She meets Chayton, which is her grandmothers handyman. This book has twist and turns with a paranormal stuff and heatache. I couldn't put it down.
