In 1959, a woman was found lying on the bank of a Pennsylvania river. She was nude, strangled and left for dead. Doctors soon realized that the woman was in a coma, they also discovered that she was pregnant. John Harmon is that woman's son, the miracle baby born to a mother who would never know him, never hold him. He has searched most of his life to discover his mother's identity and to find the person who assaulted her. His only clue is a black & white photo found clutched in his mother's hand. After decades of searching, he's finally led to the Pine Barrens of New Jersey where he will not only discover his mother's identity, but will also unearth her killer and face death square in the eye.
I enjoyed this touching story. It was written full of emotion and feeling. the author did a great job of keeping you in the moment. An exciting and moving story!
A mystery, a search to know one’s beginnings and a ghost. This short story was easy to read, well-written and with engaging content. Perfect for waiting rooms.
Liked the concept. Did not get particularly attached to any of the characters. I don't have an exact reason why, it just didn't grab me from the start.
The read was formulaic, and while an interesting story, didn't add much to the mystery genre.
I wanted more, and it is labeled as a novelette, so I wasn't necessarily expecting more, but do feel that well written novelettes should be much closer to the short story form. This was somewhere between a full fledged novel missing pieces, and a good short story. The ending is also tied up and predictable. A novelette should leave me wanting to read another novelette about the characters at the very least, and this one didn't.
1 – Couldn’t finish
2 – Finished, but with great difficulty
3 – Liked, but had some issues along the way
4 – Really liked and will readily recommend to friends
This is billed as a novelette. I would say that it is exactly long enough to hold my interest and give me a lot to consider.
A man is seeking knowledge of his mother. She died at his birth. She had been severely injured, found at the side of a road and was kept alive simply to provide life for her baby.
He wants to find out who this woman was. What was she like? What happened to her?
He ends up traveling to The New Jersey Pine Barrens. He is following a trail.
He finds much more than expected and maybe more than anyone should know.
I recommend this - if you are a mystery lover, if you are a fan of a surprise ending, if you are a fan of really well written stories, this is a book for you.
Loved this short story. John goes in search of his dead Mother's identity in the Pine Barren's of New Jersey. When John was 16 his adoptive parents tell him how his mother was found naked and almost beaten to death in the river upon examination it is discovered she is pregnant. In a coma for several month's she gives birth and dies with the only clue to who she is was a picture that she had clasped in her hand when they found her. Now in his 50's John finds a clue and follows it to the Pine Barren's where he finds the identity of his mother and his father. If you want to know how I guess you will have to read it.
The story centres around John. His mother died shortly after he was born and for 50 years he has been searching to find out who she was and who murdered her. All he has to go on is an old black and picture of her.
There isn't much substance to this story. Basically it follows John on a not very exciting journey as he tries to find out who his mother was. Bit unbelievable that he has been searching for 50 years and finds all he needs to know in a day. I found the writing a bit amateurish and like I say there was no excitement in the story.
Could have been filled with a lot more detail and expanded on a lot.
This is a short, but entertaining, story. John is a Philadelphia police officer who has been trying to solve the mystery of his mother's murder for years. he gets a solid lead finally, and follows it to the Pine Barrens of New Jersey. He finally gets his answers, from an unexpected source.
