Part I of the novel Pulse of Heroes
A suspenseful, passionate, paranormal romance that sweeps through the emotions of first love and heartache as it traverses centuries and continents.
Michelle used to feel like she was behind in everything, especially school and relationships. Her great aunt from the old country says she is like a bland meal, "no salt or pepper". But in junior year, everything changes. Her father takes a position on the Town Council, a popular boy in school becomes interested in her, and most importantly, the Hekademos Learning Center, a private school for 'troubled' students, moves into her quiet neighborhood amidst the protests of the entire town.
After seeing the School Regent out with a group of young guys just before Christmas, Michelle is convinced that there is something odd about them. Her curiosity gets the better of her and she embarks upon a mission to figure out what is really going on. After an embarrassing fall over the school wall, Michelle meets Elliot and her ordinary 'bland' life changes its course forever.
Elliot is no ordinary human. In fact, no one at the Hekademos Learning Center is. Beautiful and fierce, they have survived throughout the millennia by weaving in and out of human events. Through them, Michelle learns that history and myths from around the world are dotted with references to their kind. Michelle falls madly in love with the ever-striking and mysterious Elliot and, as much as he tries to fight it, he develops powerful feelings for her as well.
Although Elliot carries numerous painful memories from his many pasts, he disregards his own better judgment and the advice of his friends, and finds himself falling for Michelle's offbeat personality. Their feelings grow in intensity, but when History catches up with them, the difference between their life paths threatens to destroy any future that they might have had together.
Michelle learns that there are infinite shades of gray between black and white, and has to deal with the bundle of contradictory emotions called love. After some unexpected twists during a family trip to Europe, she has to trust her intuition in order to face the danger and uncertainty of being drawn into Elliot's wondrous world. Ultimately, it is up to Michelle to make the split-second, life-altering decision that will either tear them apart forever, or give them another chance.

I have been writing and storytelling ever since I was able to hold a pen. When I spent time working as a teacher with children of varying ages I was fascinated by the awesome power of words to excite and inspire the young mind. The art of Storytelling is what makes a good teacher great.
My degree in History with an emphasis on Ancient Near East, and my personal interest in world myths, combined with my fieldwork in archaeology have inspired my research and development of many elements in the story. I also remember what it was like to be a girl myself and have often wanted to share my own thoughts, fears and dreams during that age with others. I read many books during my teenage years and some of them were essential in helping me make it through that time, and helping me become the satisfied person that I am today. I want to be able to return that favor to all the readers out there.
Hi y'all I have been waiting for a book to come along that has a new paranormal twist to it, and The Pulse Of Heroes is exactly that book. I honestly don't know where to begin, I love the mystery of this book never disclosing exactly who the hero is. The male characters are robust and beautifully described I have a picture perfect image in my mind of each one, from their hair color to height, face shape to quizzical looks they give. Michelle the lovely young woman is so the embodiment of a normal 17 year old testing loves rough waters, by jumping in feet first literally. The characters in this book draw you in make you feel their elation, trust, love, pain, terror, and above all soul crushing loss. Each character has a story and each story is approached with a novice eye for detail and emotion. The author signed my book "Enjoy the adventure and fall in love a little too". Her words were far short coming of what I experienced. Mirabolante the Italian word for astonishing, is only cracking the surface of the multitude of words I really want to use. I was taken to a times and places one could only dream of. Georgia (Russia), Egypt, Turkey, Transylvania, and so many more. Each place was a new story told with such detail that I could smell the earth the men fought on, feel the heat they described burning flesh from bone. I could hear the screams and feel the pain they felt losing so many they once loved. But in the respect I could feel the love in the spoken memories, the knowledge in their words of thousands of years of walking the earth and loving their individual families. The Heroine while young in years has stories of her own she just hasn't learned them all yet. Through love and her unwillingness to give up she is thrown into scenarios that would make lesser women cringe and hide, not her she still fights and her mouth ever her curse is still running. Love no matter how it's distorted and twisted will always prevail and this book tells that from point one, and no matter the differences in your meant to be with someone then you will be. This book made me laugh, I wanted to slap characters sometimes, hide or cry out for help, and most of all it made me cry. Happiness, loss, pain, terror, and true love brought on an arsenal of tears that I couldn't stop no matter how hard I tried. I am absolutely on the edge of my seat for the next installment of this powerful moving series. I loved this book the same way I loved Twilight and The Hunger Games. It has forever earned its place in my heart. Mirabolante is all you need to remember when thinking of this book, a true dark fairy tale that has shook me to the core I am in love with this book and recommend it to anyone who wants to have a book take you away and leave you dizzy for more. Thank you for allowing me to read this book A. Jacob Sweeny I am in your debt for allowing me to take this journey and I'll never ever in a million years forget The Pulse of Heroes.
The cover is certainly mysterious !!! I Really love the cover those deep blue ocean eyes ... ** sigh **
Initially at first the story is slower to take off which is not a bad thing at all , its building the storyline and progressing as the story goes along. Believe me the momentum picks up, and I'm sure you wont be able to put it down.
There are Moments where want to sob along with the characters, and me being an emotional reader (( sniff sniff )) felt the pain with the characters. But saying this I let the moment come and then go and then continued on friskily reading along to find out in-between what’s happening.
You can see during the read that alot research was put into this story , the history involved throughout and this is nice to know it wasn’t a wham bam thank you maim storyline, if you get my drift - time and a thought process was well put forth, of course making it an enjoyable read for the person on the other end of the book. Interesting for sure !!! I liked how Elliot told his stories to Michelle along the way.
A great cast of supporting characters, all built along the way, giving the storyline some depth and also creating a memento along the read. Lovable secondary characters that certainly grow on you, and that you enjoy to read . Villians Im sure you will loathe , each dipicting there own traits along the way !
AJ has wonderfully written her descriptions like poetry, as characteristics are explained- detailed - I felt I was there in the book. The color of Elliot's eyes, the surrounding, everything that could be explained and defined was done so magically. All emotions well portrayed, sending the reading into a ** sniff sniff * sigh moment along with the character and also the heartfelt moments as well. Even moments where you wanted to just jump in the book and kick some arse.
A smooth flowing storyline which only progresses at a rapid rate after the initial introduction , creating that vat that sucks you in and has you reading for days just to find out how it will end... and not until you have finished will that vat release you. Smooth flowing chapters that flow from one till the next and A storyline unique of its own, this alone I found great, so many stories out there at the moment . To find a book that contains its own unique storyline, with an intriguing plot, great cast of characters, and an ending I’m sure will make you only want more.
The book is told in third person and contains several POVS but this was easily understood and not at all confusing at any time during the read.
I really enjoyed the main characters Michelle and Elliot their lives much in a turmoil, emotions created that will have you melting one moment, (( at those big blue eyes )) and sobbing the next. Michelle was a caring, soft centered soul, but when the time was right she knew just what to do. Her Strong character traits shone through in this book, she tended to be a very emotional person but this blended well throughout the read. Elliot was a slightly tortured soul if you may call him that, very confused, yet his caring side surfaced on more than one occasion even with his moods the attraction between the characters was slow and gradual and not instant which I enjoyed. ** it wasn't as though she looked at him and wham they where together, this progresses along the read at a good rate leaving us in anticipation. But the romance was sweet, caring and made your heart flutter ! Elliot was certainly a character that Im sure you will fall in love with. I know I did !! ** flutters eyelashes **
Pulse of Heroes is filled with romance, action, suspense, drama and traits of history = and elements of the Paranormal World.
A read I'm sure you will enjoy from beginning to end and have you eagerly anticipating book 2 !!!
Wow! What can I say...this book seriously just blew my mind. When I saw that this book was in the Romancing your dark side tour, I seriously squealed lol, I've been dying to read this book for so long, with all the amazing reviews I've read. So many 5 star reviews and now I know why...
This story well and truly exceeded my expectations, it's so beautifully written, A. Jacob Sweeny has such a unique and refreshing writing style. One that'll seize the reader and have them glued to every page, each turn of the page brings something new and exciting. We delve into deep history that has so much depth and magnitism, it will captivate you. I was blown away by how much detail has gone into this book, I had a clear picture of everything in my mind while reading and it felt like I was there along for the ride.
Each character brings their own individual spark to the story.. The main characters Michelle and Elliot had me in an emotional wreck LOL one minute I was all gooey and weak in the knees *sigh* the next I was balling my eyes out (heart-breaking) then I was ready to jump in the book and kick some serious butt! The secondary characters were so much fun to read, each one had their own adventurous story to tell, we get to experience several different POV's which was something new and exhilarating. This book has to be in my top 5 best stories I've read in 2011 or ever for that matter.
If your looking for something new and truly mind blowing, then I recommend you check out this book. Believe me, you won't be disappointed but left with a thirst for more.
Obviously I am not going to review my own book :) I got this from a reader and thought I'd share. "Your book is like a five course meal. It starts with an innocent piece of the all American white bread, but then the courses start coming, one after another and before you know it you've been lured in to a full on carnage."
But this is one of my favorite reviews so enjoy: "I really don't understand the comparison to Twilight other than the romance between a teenage girl and an non-aging being. No vampires, wolves, begging to be made into a supernatural being. While I'm a huge fan of the Twilight series, I'm my opinion this blew Twilight away!!! AJ Sweeny is an amazing author! I couldn't put this book down and finished it in about 16 hours. The amount of history, action, and adventure is astounding. The amount of detail painted amazing pictures of the character and the places described. Elliot and Michelle have this chemistry that while familiar, is also very different. Throughout the book I fell in love with, then hated, then loved Elliot again right along side Michelle. I don't really want to give too much away because unless you read this book there is no way I can explain it and do it justice. it leaves you wanting more; craving it. Just open this book and you are in for a hell of a ride!"

Wow what an amazing ride this book was! The story was just amazing and had me hooked from the start!! I loved all that the author put into this book, the history, suspense and the love just wow!! The story of Michelle and how her world was turned around what an awesome ride to be on! The love for Elliot and his family and just how they all fit right together was a good thing to be a part of. I really felt like a part of the book and the adventure that was unfolding in front of me! The book was for sure a page turner that I could not put down! If you love to read about amazing guys and like being on a fantastic ride this is the book for you. Its not the same old paranormal love store it has history depth and lots of excitement! This is a great book for all ages and for the paranormal reader for sure!!
Before I began this book, I found myself in a reading slump. I decided to pick this book up because I had heard so many things about it. I knew before I even opened it that I would need something different and exciting to hold my attention. I got that and so much more.
First off, let me just say that I love A.J's writing style. I found it unique and fresh, lyrical even, and I enjoyed that the story was told in third person rather than the very popular first person. (Not that I have a problem with that) A.J's descriptions are out of this world. Everytime she described all of the guy's eye color, I found myself sighing and longing to look upon them myself. It was because of these descriptions that I found myself appreciating the cover more. The blue is a stunning color, after all.
I loved the characters. Michelle is sensitive and caring, but she is also incredibly strong and has a definite spark to her. I really enjoyed reading about her and found myself releating to Michelle, especially in the begining of the book. Elliot is the handsome and charming immortal with the tortured and complicated past. He struggles telling Michelle exactly what he is because he has yet to figure that out for himself. A character like this from any other author might have given me a headache. Like Michelle, we learn a lot of information in this 500 page book. But never once was I confused or lost.
I love how all of the guys from the school interact with one another. I loved how the characters did not immediately fall in love with each other. The fact that they slowly fell in love made the book even more magical. I love that there was a mixture of action, adventure, and romance. I loved that the book was emotional. The character's pain was palpable. I felt like crying, sighing, throwing the book across the room, and yelling.
The history laced into the story was another thing that I really enjoyed about the story. You could tell by all the details just how much time and effort went into researching the book.
The pacing is perfect, too. The begining starts off slow, but quickly builds and builds until you are at the edge of your seat. By the end, I was satisfied by the ending, but left craving the second installment like crazy!
If you are looking for something that is wonderful, action packed, romantic, full of history, twists and turns, and different from all of the other Paranormal YA books out there, then I suggest that you grab yourself a copy of this book. You won't be disappointed!
I could not put this book down!!! It took my breath away and I enjoyed it sooo much!!
I have seen some of my friends talking about it and had it on my to read list, and I am angry that I have not started this before now..I have read a few good books this year and this is definitely one of them that tops my list of favorites! When I saw that is was a little over 500 pages, I was like, uh-oh...but not once was I bored or skipping through...I savored each page and when I finished and I went and bought the next one so I can start on it tonight!
Michelle is your typical teenager and there were times when she could irriate me, but she grew so much through this book and I know she will continue to grow...and then there is Elliot!! I have falen hard for him!! OMG..he is fantastic and with all his imperfections as well, I can only say WOW!!
Loved Loved Loved this book!! Can't wait for the next one!! The characters in this book are amazing and I loved all the history intertwined into the story. Read this book you will not be disappointed!!
When Michelle discovers that the Hekademos Learning Center is moving into her neighborhood she is instantly intrigued and takes it upon herself to investigate the new school. When a spying incident goes horribly wrong, Michelle finds herself hiding in the compounds of the school, where she witnesses one of the students, Elliot, do something that is not humanly possible.
Unable to believe her eyes, Michelle's intrigue in the school deepens, along with her curiosity about Elliot. The more she tries to learn about him, the more confused she gets, one minute he is friendly to her, the next he is rude. One thing is for certain, Michelle is determined to discover Elliot's secret and when she does, it is unlike anything she ever expected.
Wow, this is why I love to read, because of books like this. Pulse of Heroes is rich in history, suspense, action, mystery and romance, which author A. Jacob Sweeny blends together perfectly, to create an absolutely amazing and unique story.
I fell in love with this book. From the very first page, I was intrigued and the book captivated me from beginning to end. I found myself reading into the early hours of the morning because I didn't want to put it down. The story pulled me in and I was eagerly turning the pages, desperate to find out what would happen next.
Elliot and Michelle, the main characters, I absolutely adored. I became emotionally attatched to them and cared about what they were going through. Not only that, I also loved the secondary characters. Sometimes in a novel, the secondary charcters are not well developed, they are written only to further the main characters stories, but not with Pulse of Heroes. Each character in the novel was beautifully written with their own story to tell.
Pulse of Heroes has some amazing twists that I did not see coming and I often found myself thinking about Elliot and Michelle, during the day, wondering what would happen in their story next. When a book has that effect on you, you know it's good.
After I finished reading the novel, I felt that, not only had I just read an incredible story (one that I will read again and again) but that I had also learnt something as Pulse of Heroes is full of history, that you can't help but be intrigued by.
One of the best books I have read this year, I highly recommend Pulse of Heroes by author A. Jacob Sweeny. I am eagerly anticipating the release of the next book in the series, and will be purchasing it the very first day it is released.
As most of the people who are familiar with me at all, know that my favorite genre is horror/paranormal and my favorite character is the vampire. I have read many vampire books by various authors and you would think that 'I had read it all' and 'how can anyone possibly come up with anything I had not already read or any scenario I hadn't seen played out as 'a typical for a vampire story'. A lot of area has been covered by a lot of different writers, who created 'Dracula' and what was to follow from that idea to Bertena Varney's Lure of the Vampire which consisted of in depth research in all aspects of the vampire as was Charles E. Butler's The Romance of Dracula.
As to my surprise, I was spellbound with A. J. Sweeny's book Pulse of Heroes! I found from page one that I could not put this book down, and with it being over 500 pages long, well, let's just say, I didn't get a lot of chores done. But I am lucky because my life mostly consists of me and my 23 old disabled son. I was swept away into another world with POH, and often felt the emotions and circumstances the characters went through and experienced. It was a much welcomed escape into another world with different people and different problems. It satisfied my need for drama, suspense, romance and mystery. And it didn't lack in any of these areas. I just kept finding myself wanting more, so I was grateful the book was longer than the ones I usually read. It was a nice surprise when I found the book to be exploring the history of the immortals, transporting the reader backwards through time and across the world. Her imagination and creativity to detail when telling the reader about different places such as Russia and Transylvania which were vivid and as the reader, could actually see them as if I were there.
As far as the characters, Elliot and Michele I found them to be mature and strong in all the situations they went through. Especially what Eliott had to endure in his years past. I feel this molded him into what he was when he met Michelle. I do not want to give a lot of the book away, but wanted to tell enough to wet your appetite. I feel very honored and privileged to have been able to read and review Pulse of Heroes and can't wait to read more! I highly recommend this book to anyone and if I could give it more than five stars I would! If you love vampires, paranormal, and love stories with drama, heartaches and struggles, this book is for you! I look forward to reading a lot more of A.J.'s work! I give Pulse of Heroes five stars *****
But Michelle's mom knew better. She recognized those cries. Those weer the pangs of the heart, the kind that only a girl could experience. She also knew that somewhere in between the weeping and the gasping a boy's name hung onto every tear. --Pulse of Heroes by A. Jacob Sweeny
That quote is just one of the reasons I love this book! Move over Edward and Bella, a new power couple has hit the scene! Michelle and Elliot from Pulse of Heroes by A. Jacob Sweeny will give Stephine Myer's characters a run for their money! I have read so many books, it takes a lot to knock my socks off but A. Jacob Sweeny did just that! With her original storyline and unforgettable characters she has an award winning series in the making. Who needs vampires and werewolves when we have a whole house full of extremely sexy superheroes! The story is action packed from beginning to end. You will not be bored anytime in this story and that says a lot for a book that is over 500 pages long. It takes one amazing author to connect the reader to the characters in a way that you feel like you are part of the story. But that's just what Sweeny accomplished. I was shocked and awed by this book and I know anyone that reads it will feel the same way! I can't remember the last time I read a book that held the power to make me cry. It will be a very long time before this story will leave my mind and heart. What I love most about this book is the fact that like in a real relationship Michelle and Elliot's romance is not without it's ups and downs. I was so emotionally connected to the story I felt everything Michelle felt. When she was happy I was happy for her. When she was embarrassed I was red-faced right along with her. And when she was heartbroken, I was also heartbroken and teary eyed. It takes an amazing author to accomplish such a feat but that's just what Sweeny did! In conclusion I am so happy I had the chance to read this wonderful book and feel so honored to be know such an amazing author. So keep your eyes peeled because A. Jacob Sweeny is on her way to the very top of the young adult best seller list. But don't take my word for it, read it for your self! I have made it extra easy for you by adding a link to Amazon on my blog for you to purchase her book. So what are you waiting for? Order your copy tonight!
I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!! For her first novel, A. Jacob Sweeny truly has produced one of the best paranormal story lines I have read in a long time. She is able to incorporate mystery, adventure, suspense, paranormal, love and historical context all into one story. The characters are very realistic despite the underlying paranormal theme. Michelle is a typical high school girl just trying to make her way through to becoming an adult, but feeling as if she is falling further and further behind. She meets Elliot and despite her uncertainty in the beginning, she quickly finds herself experiencing the excitement of her first real crush, disappointment, heartbreak, anger, fear and true love. It is not your typical paranormal romance and leaves you on edge wondering what will happen next. The story just pulls you in and you never want it to end! I could not put it down and actually finished it one day!!! Michelle and Elliot are definitely on their way to becoming the next big couple in the paranormal world!! A. Jacob Sweeny has now become one of my favorite authors and I cannot wait for her second book to be released!
I really don't understand the comparison to Twilight other than the romance between a teenage girl and an non-aging being. Through out the book I fell in love with, then hated, then loved Elliot again right along side Michelle. I don't really want to give too much away because unless you read this book there is no way I can explain it and do it justice. it leaves you wanting more; craving it. Just open this book and you are in for a hell of a ride!
If you want a new twist on Paranormal this book is for you. A new school moves into Michelle's neighborhood and she takes it upon herself to find out if the kids are delinquents but what she finds out is they are not like her at all. While she is investigating she falls over the wall and meets Elliot. None of the guys at the school are normal. They are all immortal and have lived for thousands of years. A. Jacob Sweeny is an amazing author. I love how she makes history fun and come alive in this book while Elliot and his friends tell Michelle about their pasts. It was as if I was there with them living it. I loved this book from the start. The amount of history, adventure, and action is so good. I found myself falling in love with Elliot right along with Michelle, than hating him, being scared of him and than loving him again. I can't wait for the next book and the adventure it will take me on.
As I was reading Pulse of Heroes, I could actually picture my self there with Michelle ( the main character). Weather she be in class, at home, stalking a very hot new comer to town, or off into far away lands getting caught up in a 2000 year old war. A. Jacob Sweeny is a truly beautiful and talented writer. I could imagine my self as Michelle being swept off my feet by a beautiful "young" man. I don't wish to give to much away of the book, of fear of ruining the excitement for you. There's not to many books to compare Pulse of Heroes to, which in all honestly I wouldn't want to compare it to any other writings. It really is a one of a kind book. I can't wait to read more from this talented Author. I have and will continue to recommend Pulse of Heroes to anyone who wants a AWESOME read.
I enjoyed Pulse of Heroes very much and I loved how the author A.Jacob Sweeny included so much history throughout the book because I have always enjoyed learning about the histories of different countries.Pulse of Heroes is unlike any other book that I've read and I highly recommend this book to anyone who has an appreciation for history.Pulse of Heroes is very attention grabbing and entertaining.I would recommend this book to everyone I know.
This book is AMAZING! Its everything I look for in a story. Ancient history, and a really a really hot guy with brains. Then there is also the fact that it is a long book. Something that will last longer then the short chaptered books of today! I love this book.... Oh yeah!
This review may contain very mild spoilers (not enough to spoil the story). I reviewed some of my points in detail.

Everybody else, please feel free to comment. ---------------------- I don't know how to review this book. I have mixed feelings about it. There are soo many good reviews for this book (which was the reason I moved it up my TR que), now I guess I'll be the odd one here since I didn't like it all that much. I will try my best to justify my 2 stars. Let me start with the ones that annoyed me more.
- The story was written in third person, which is fine with me if it didn't keep jumping heads. I mean one minute we were told how Michelle is feeling and the next sentence is describing how Elliot or Michelle's friends are thinking. It just hits you without warning and you don't know whose head you are in anymore.
- Most (even important ones) dialogues were told as sentences rather than dialogs. This got even more confusing since we are already jumping heads and is written in third person and now dialogs are also thrown into the sentences.
- Story and plot was okay despite too much melodrama. It was interesting enough read, once you get over the first half of the book. Second half has nice action and story finally started going somewhere even if it was predeictable. I came close to leaving this book in DNF pile and move on, but I don't like leaving the book without any closure, so I stuck it out.
- I wish there was atleast one likable character. I hate it when MC is not very likable, b'coz opinion on whole book changes based on MC. Honestly I don't understand Michelle (MC) at all. She was introduced to us as a "good girl" if not shy and a bit of a rule follower. However somehow we are expected to believe that this "good girl" does some random stuff like trespassing or snooping around, which goes totally against her character you've got built up in your head so far. Author spent a good 50 pages explaning very mudane stuff (with absolutely nothing happening) to build her character and BAM all of a sudden Michelle is doing everything against what she's been described as.
- Elliot's powers were not described well either. I don't know what he was doing when he tried to get thunder (?) to respond to his calls when he saved Michelle (again). Why did Michelle get some sea smell when she was near Elliot? Why did she feel the familiarity with him? Guess these can be answered in the sequel.
- I was not able to connect the word 'Pulse' with the story either. They kept repeating the words pulse, pulsar or pulse of heroes, but I was not clear as to what it means or what did Elliot mean when he said it is not about Michelle.
- I don't get why now-a-days in most of the books I read, just about every male character has to be attracted to MC and MC inspite of declaring her love still is attracted to other 6 different guys. I am talking can't sleep, can't eat, can't focus, can't live kinda love and out of no where she is attracted to just about every guy she talks to. I honestly don't get it. May be this book got inspired by HoN series in this aspect. (let me list so you don't think I am exagerating the number here - first there is (1)Tim (Michelle's crush), (2)another guy from her camping trip (forgot his name), (3) Rion (she was "drawn" to him - whatever that means), (4) Elliot (the hero), (5) Hayden (the creep), (6) some other random guy she sets her eyes on when she goes to Hungary.
- Also how can anyone have feelings for someone who not only hit you, drugged you, holding you hostage, but also almost freaking raped you? I was absolutely dumbfounded when I was reading this. I see no rational reason or logic to the way Michelle thinks and looks at situations. Either she is a saint or incredibly stupid. There are many situations I didn't understand the reason for her to think the way she does.
- I was more than a little creeped out with a 5000 year old guy and a 17 year old girl combo. It would have been okay if there were not too many trips down the memory lane for Elliot. Like him thinking he heard those words before or he knew what she was going to ask b'coz he saw it happen before.
- Last but not least. There was a reference in the book that Unicorn was one of the Lord Vishnu's incarnations. As fas as I know Unicorn has never been part of Vishnu's dhashavatharas (10 avatars). Wiki backs me up: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dashavatara So I am not sure where author got the idea of making Unicorn into one of Lord Vishnu's Dashavathara.
All in all I enjoyed the book okay, but I don't know if I will read the sequel, may be if I could borrow it from someone or from library. This book isn't for everyone (definetely wasn't for me), so I recommend that you borrow it from Library / friend first.
After an embarrassing fall over the school wall, Michelle meets Elliot and her ordinary ‘bland’ life changes its course forever.
Elliot is no ordinary human. In fact, no one at the Hekademos Learning Center is. Beautiful and fierce, they have survived throughout the millennia by weaving in and out of human events. Through them, Michelle learns that history and myths from around the world are dotted with references to their kind. Michelle falls madly in love with the ever-striking and mysterious Elliot and, as much as he tries to fight it, he develops strong feelings for her as well. Although Elliot carries numerous painful memories from his many pasts, he disregards his own better judgment and the advice of his friends, and finds himself falling for Michelle‘s offbeat personality. Their feelings grow in intensity, but when History catches up with them, the difference between their life paths threatens to destroy any future that they might have had together.
Michelle learns that there are infinite shades of gray between black and white, and has to deal with the bundle of contradictory emotions called love. She has to trust her intuition in order to face the danger and uncertainty of being drawn into Elliot’s wondrous world. Ultimately, it is up to Michelle to make the split-second, life-altering decision that will either tear them apart forever, or give them another chance.
To be fair I didn't read through the entire book. I read about the first chapter or so, realized that the writing wasn't going to get any better, and gave up. Dunno what the plot is like so I decided to be lenient with my rating.
Let me get straight to the point. The writing is what pulls down what may otherwise be a fantastic YA paranormal romance. Michelle's name is mentioned on average once every 2.2939456 sentences, which is much too often, especially when the sentences are as short as they are in this book. The basic rule of "show don't tell" is also evaded here. Everything that happens is described in a very matter-of-fact manner, which would be fine sometimes, but not ALL the time. Also, the reader is clearly some kind of omnipotent god because the thoughts of every character is available at the same time, which makes it a bit confusing as to who is the main focus of the third-person narrative.
In a good book, the 1 chapter I read should have been enough to give me a decent idea of what the main character is like. After reading 1 chapter of Pulse Of Heroes I was still nonplussed about what kind of girl Michelle is. She didn't say much, but on the other hand her every little action was described in excruciating detail. For instance the reader was informed of the fact that her text to her best friend had gone through and that she had not yet received a reply. The fact that I can conjure this part out of my memory but not any description of Michelle is clearly not ideal.
TL;DR: writing style is staccato, too-detailed and uninteresting, main characters are uninspiring, but I can't make any judgment on the plot. However, these are my own opinions, so if you're interested in this genre I'd suggest you try having a read of this yourself.
Struggling with school and having a crush on a boy that's spoken for become the least of Michele's worries when she meets Elliot in a rather unconventional way - falling over a wall while snooping in Elliot's private school's backyard. Michele finds herself peering into the bluest and most mysterious eyes she's ever seen, and then falling again, but this time her fall is emotional rather than physical.
It's in the town of Willow's Creek where Elliot and Michele's story blossoms from several encounters leading way to a whirlwind of unexpected events. Elliot's past is intriguing and adventurous and sometimes dark, which has Michele's appeal for the boy at the highest peak. Michele, who's eager to find out exactly who this gorgeous boy is and where he comes from, is in for the adventure of her life and quite possibly the most ill fate.
Comprised of all-inclusive tales from Elliot's past and Michele's emotional coils, Author A. Jacob Sweeny delivers a story with both historical and heart felt fascination for her readers. Sweeney's writing beautifully reflects her knowledge of the eras in which the characters' narratives take place. The antagonist and protagonist characters' personalities are well thought out and equipped with traits that will embed themselves into the hearts of many without effort.
Dive into this fantastic world of romance, thrills and mystery and make A. Jacob Sweeny's book, "Pulse of Heroes" a weekend getaway. You won't regret it.
Absolutely amazing book. To be honest I was a little lost for the first 20-30 pages because I was unsure when we skipped back to after Halloween. That was a slightly confusing part. I was skeptical until we got a little further in that I would like the book. Sweeny provides wonderfully long description, but I could definitely see all the surroundings by those descriptions. After Michelle meets Elliot for the first time I was hooked. I had to know that beautiful boy's secret. The mystery factor is definitely there, and then the romance that kept me completely wrapped up waiting for more. The danger factor and the pain is definitely there. The writing for when she in Europe is descriptive, and you get a complete picture of the violent scenes Michelle witnesses. The entire last half of the book is full of action, pain, sorrow, and total growth for the characters, especially Michelle. She really has to grow up and change there, and there is no going back. Stick with the book for 50 pages in, and you will definitely be interested, by page 100 you won't be able to put it down. Wonderful ending that makes you wanting the next book, but not so much of a cliffhanger that we will all dream about it until the book comes out or go crazy not knowing. Sweeny has produced an enthralling story. Looking forward to lots more! Thank you for a great story, full of innocence and love, but plenty of adult moments. Great read for this mommy!
I bought this book to honor the Author who wrote it. Her hard work was bought on Smashwords, then posted and pirated in open forums for all to read.. SO wrong on many levels... With that being said, let's get it on!!! =)
OMGosh what is there NOT to LOVE about Pulse of Heroes! Drop-dead, picture perfect, gorgeous guys, emotions that drive you the edge of tears in some scenes, then reel you back in! I was born and raised in California so I had a feel of being home again.
The characters are well defined and their stories run deep, imagine being alive for almost 5000 years. Elliot is so adorable and tender, but ruthless and protective, at the same time.
Michelle is a young niave 17 year old with problems of her own, I remember those awkward and emotional day, when I didn't like I measured up to anything I did.
The world is absolutely amazing as the author has you traveling from place to place. I loved this part. Traveling to place I have never been. The twists and turns kept my my guessing what will happen and just what /who is the PULSE of Heroes?
There are so many emotions in this book, I knew exactly what they were feeling as they experiened them. For a book to reach out and grab me like that says alot.
I recommend this book to a YA reader 18 and older who is looking awesome weekend read.
I usually don't write reviews but felt that I had to on this book. The reason is that there was something special here that I didn't find in other books in the same category. The best way to describe it is actually by the author's own words from the book summary on her website. She says that Michelle (The main protagonist) learns that there are different shades of gray in between black and white. That is what the author achieved in this book that many others YA authors miss. The message is not good against evil, or that love will win in the end. The reader learns right alongside Michelle, that life is a lot more complicated than black or white. Elliot and all his friend’s past are really amazing and the author had done her homework. For that alone I give A Jacob Sweeny 5 stars. She dared on the reader to take in more complex ideas about life. I think people who are more mature and developed will really enjoy this novel. It's not for the simple mind that's looking for a quick romance or a fast beach read. I think this book will stand the test of time on its own. I am looking forward to her second book and recommend this to anyone who wants to read reality as it crashed with history and paranormal. This could be considered an adult book in my opinion as well as advanced young adult.
AS a guy I was first a little scared to pick this up because I didn't want to spend hours reading about some teenage girl obsessed with some beautiful vampire or shifter. I tried a few and they bore me. But this was recommended to me by a friend and I love this book. It was so much more real and full of action and history. The author didn't go overboard with description of the immortals and they each actually had a real personality. In other books they seem like objects for some girl to go on and on about.I liked the guys- they weren't super macho or emotional dweebs. I liked how they have all fought in wars and was very interested when ever their pasts were brought into the story. Now Michelle is great because she actually seems like a real person, she could be one of my girlfriends- that's how real she felt. Great book great action and great plot and twists. I will read the next one for sure.Pulse Of Heroes is great!(The Pulse #1)
Michelle is your standard teenage girl suffering from imaginary genetic flaws and an overly curious mind. A new school for 'troubled kids' is opening up in the wooded lands behind her house bringing with it mystery, unanswered questions and most importantly Elliot. Pulse of Heroes is a timeless romance which expands through the centuries with a new twist to the already overcrowded paranormal genre. With a bit of a slow start and the unique writing style of A. Jacob Sweeney that takes some getting use to, the strong plot and character development carry you through the intensity of teenage infactuation and the deep inner struggle of the protagonist. I thoroughly enjoyed reading "Pulse of Heroes" and found the initial slow beginning and time changes a little off putting to start with however well worth working your way through. Looking foward to the next installment.
I just finished this book and let me tell you - I think this one is going to be the next big one!! It's just perfect, the way the stories are layered together, the way the historical interludes are interwoven, the romance, the adventure, the suspense. I stayed up until 3:45 to finish it!! Aaaahhhhhh.
I heard the author on a radio show and she sounded really cool and interesting, and all her characters are just great. I felt like they were real, and the end (without giving anything away) made me freak out waiting for the next in the series. Five stars, all the way!!!!
Seriously loved this book. 1st off, I found a lot of similarities between this book and Twilight, but there were enough differences between the books that made them both unique. I read this book on my kindle and didn't realize how long the book actually was. I think it's about 500 pages. I'm so glad it was because I didn't want the book the end. I feel like the author gave you time to get to know the characters well. Although I found the main character a little too emotional for me, I think the author will make the character mature as the book series progresses. I would totally recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the paranormal books. It's a very quick read and hard to put down. I predict this book will be very popular once word gets out.
