The Empire #2

The Rebels

Rate this book
"Maybe I want to find out what's worse than dying."

On the cusp of freedom, Adrian Stannis is plunged into the world of bounty hunters and rebels, each one valuing his head with the kind of single-minded intensity that does not bode well for his dream of peace and a fully stocked lab in a quiet and obscure corner of the galaxy.

Dragged along against his will by a barbarian intent on selling him back to the Empire, Adrian 'accidentally' kidnaps an emergency room doctor--because that is the kind of thing he does, while Kali and Bryce try to find him and become embroiled in an adventure of their own, one that leads to a sinister mystery that might destroy them all.

Part adventure, part misadventure, this tale packs one punch after another until the final shocking ending.

Book Info: Genre: Space Opera
Reading Level: Adult
Recommended for: fans of space opera

Disclosure: I received a free ebook copy of this novel from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Synopsis: After escaping the Empire, Adrian Stannis is plunged into the world of bounty hunters and rebels, each one valuing his head with the kind of single-minded intensity that does not bode well for his dream of peace and a fully stocked lab in a quiet and obscure corner of the galaxy.

Dragged along against his will by a barbarian intent on selling him back to the Empire, Adrian 'accidentally' kidnaps an emergency room doctor, while Kali and Bryce try to find him and become embroiled in an adventure of their own.

My Thoughts: I read the first book in this series, The Empire in April of this year review here if links are enabled). This book jumps right into the action and I struggled to remember what happened in the previous book, but then I found a page on the author’s website that offered an alternate first chapter – here, on her current projects (if links enabled) – and that helped.

This book sometimes read like a comedy of errors – miscommunications, misunderstandings, and missed connections leading to people chasing all over the galaxy on unnecessary searches. One hunter team, bounty hunter, or rebel group after another kept showing up. It occasionally made me roll my eyes, but it did keep the tension high, and the problems with the Empire versus the rebels... well, it certainly made for a most interesting moral dilemma. There were a few issues with the wrong verb tense here and there, but overall it was fairly clean and well-edited.

A third book is planned, called The Andromedans. More information about this series can be found here (if links enabled).

For fans of space opera or light military science fiction, especially if the book presents a moral dilemma, I think you will find this series a good fit. I know I’ll be watching for the next book in the series – I want to see how it all ends.

I have to say that this review was a little hard to do. I hate putting in spoilers so I kept having to erase what i wrote. So I will first start by saying that I normally don't read Science Fiction. With that said the minute I picked up The Empire I was hooked. I have never ever read a story where I could see myself in another time and place. I really enjoyed the world that Elizabeth has created. Can you imagine people wanting to hunt you down for something you possess that they want? You really don't understand it at first but as time goes on and you see what they are willing to do to you to get what they want you become determined to keep everyone around you safe and sound. But how do you do that without anyone getting hurt or even getting hurt yourself?

Adrian is running for his life as well as the ones he loves. He knows that he is being sought after for his mind. They want his mind and they will stop at nothing to get it. But Adrian wants to keep everyone he loves safe and he wants to keep his mind in tact so what can he do? He decides to run because running seems to be the quickest and safest way to deal with these people. Only he does not realize he has a hunter on his tail and that hunter will stop at nothing to get him back to where he belongs.

Adrian finally realizes that laying low was a mistake because the hunter was able to track him and has captured him and now what is he supposed to do? Where will they take him? Will they hurt him or kill him? Will he ever see his family again? This is a story about surviving against all odds and it is incredible how much Adrian goes through and decides that he will have hope and trust that at the end of the day he will survive this bump in the road.

The Rebels drags you into the middle of an action packed adventure. This science fiction tale is filled with heart stopping scenes, which compelled my eyes to delightfully dance over the pages of this masterpiece. Elizabeth Lang excels in creating a book filled with a mixture of everything us avid readers would consider to be “a great read.” The Rebels continues off where The Empire left us, Adrian Stannis fleeing from those who literally want his head, or more accurately, his mind. The most wanted man fools himself into believing if he lies low enough, he and those close to him are safe. Things change quickly when reality, AKA the bounty hunter, comes charging in and beats Adrian Stannis into captivity.

If you believed Elizabeth Lang was done bringing in strong characters into the picture, you thought wrong. The Rebels introduces the readers to Jon Tucker, one of the leaders of the Rebellion against the Empire. Learning more about the barbaric, bounty hunter is like an itch you’re going to want to scratch. This book is an exhilarating read, one also filled with the perfect amount of humor. What moves you to fight on when hope is lost: love, survival instincts, or curiosity? The Rebels is a tale I proudly recommend, and I look forward to reading the last book of this series.

Thank you, Elizabeth Lang, for allowing me to wander in that incredible mind of yours. I give you two thumbs up.

Elizabeth Lang cannot write this series fast enough for me! I’m hanging on the edge of my seat. I can’t wait for the conclusion of Adrian and Kali’s story.

When we left Adrian, Kali and Bryce were about to go through Adrian’s newly created jump gate. They were running from the High Admiral who would stop at nothing to control Adrian forever. And now…they’re facing Bounty Hunters! Adrian is now number one on the most wanted list. He takes the top spot in place of the Rebel leader Jon Tucker. All three are now wanted persons by the Empire. The bounty hunters manage to separate the three and they team up with some unlikely cohorts. Action and adventure follow the three everywhere! Fortunately Kali is able to “talk” to Adrian through her mind connection. Despite the mixed messages and separate adventures, they manage to find each other. And yet the adventure continues.

It’s a maze of enemies who become friends. The realization that everyone is a pawn in the same sick game. Separation does make the heart grow fonder. And evil lurks where you least expect it.

All in all The Rebels is an excellent continuation of The Empire and I cannot wait for The Andromedans. It’s definitely going on my reading list!!!

The Rebels, by Elizabeth Lang, sequel to The Empire, is an entertaining, clever book.

I say 'clever' for several reasons. Firstly, Lang's greatest strength is her dialogue, which engages the reader with the characters and adds a sense of realism. Secondly, her backdrop is tangible, a future society where dystopian nightmares come true, but on a galactic level. Finally, and perhaps most pertinently, Lang cleverly continues themes from her first book, but at the same time twists them in ingenious ways.

In The Empire, a great amount of Lang's book is devoted to Adrian, the tortured soul of a genius scientist. It continues into The Rebels, but we have another soul (the bounty hunter Drel Argus) who in fact is the most poignant, noticeable tortured character.

I simplify when it would be unfair to Lang. There are many characters who have depth and turn this science fiction novel into a memorable one indeed.

Five deserved stars.

The novel The Rebels, the sequel to The Empire, is as engrossing as the first book in the series. The author, Elizabeth Lang, once again creates an adroit plot with strong direction and fascinating characters.

The novel picks up where The Empire left off, with heroes, Adrian, Kali and Bryce, turned fugitive and on the run. Quickly, trouble follows and the intrepid band of three are separated, with Adrian falling into the clutches of a bounty hunter and Kali and Bryce out to rescue him. But things are never what they seem, with changes of heart, and new faces and old stirring up danger.

As with the last book in the series, The Rebels best strength lies in its strong characters and their interaction with one another. Despite the fact the two main characters of Adrian and Kali are separated for much of the book, I like the way the author intensified their relationship. Also, I enjoyed the subtle interplay between the bounty hunter and the new character of Dr. Adding. They challenged each other, with attraction and respect creeping in over time.

The storyline is nicely paced and meshes together smoothly, with a deft touch of tension in the right spots. I did find the endgame of the plot a bit predictable, if still entertaining. However the cliffhanger at the end was out of the blue and shocker for me (I definitely did not see that twist coming).

The Rebels is a terrific book and I highly recommend it.

This one is a great character study. Adrian, Kali, and Bryce all fit nicely into this stereotype trifecta of characters so prevalent in novels, the smart one, the emotional one, and the funny one (The Doctor, Amy, and Rory is another one. Start looking for the trifecta, they're everywhere). However, as the novel progresses, the lines between the characters blends, making them more rich and vibrant.

Also, her use of language is fantastic. She takes the cliche's we're so familiar with and destroys them, making her descriptions vivid and real.

The second book starts right where book one left off, you start right into a scene full with action, the hero's re escaped and hide on a planet, how ever they are far from safe when a bounty hunter comes and captivate Adrian. He is brought back to the Empire. The other go free him with help from the rebels. Adrian kidnaps a doctor, frees a man and manage to fool the guards ad bounty hunters. He manage to escape with all of them, will they be safe now? You have to read that for yourself, I personally can not wait for the third book.

An excellent sequel to "Empire". We learn more about Adrian and Kali, and some new characters of interest are introduced (Just who is Sam, anyway?). The book is filled with adventure, but the abrupt ending leaves something to be desired. I presume the third book will Tell All, but it's not out yet. Bummer.
