109,882 words, and next to none of them filler.

crazy, right?

yeah. this shit was great. spent all day reading it, wallowing in a glorious mashup of an interstellar thriller, science mystery, and found family romance IN SPACE.

nerdy as fuck and i had a blast.

this was a glorious admixture of the world's longest episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation and a reboot movie set somewhere between the first film and khan.

not as brilliantly constructed as the first book in this series (this one was a proper bath overflowing with lovely character studies of canonical names and original characters alike, plus scientific discovery and debate and problem-solving and the whole found-family thing that makes me cry if i'm not careful with my feelz—whereas the other was a tense, lean-as-fuck adventure-thriller that featured all of the above but in a more cunningly efficient package).

but it was nonetheless smart, funny, and deeply, deeply satisfying, just like the first.

finished it in a single, gluttonous sitting.

loved it.

loved it all.

Just as good as the first one, but in a completely different way. This is more like the best Star Trek movie you'll never see.

The romance is still present, but very much background to the larger story here. Also, looooooong. (Way longer than that GR page count, for sure.) With those two things combined, I'm not sure I'd read it again, but I definitely don't regret it. If you don't care how much play the romance gets, there's really no downside.
