All Allie Mitchell wanted was a chance to work for Sean Greyson, a legend in the business world. But his last three assistants were young, attractive, and blatantly looking for a promotion from assistant to wife, and Greyson has no desire to repeat the pattern with his next hire. When Allie's friend in the company's HR department encourages her to apply for the position but to downplay her physical attributes for the interview, Allie lands the job, and somehow manages to keep her attraction for her boss under wraps. So far, so good, until....
Sean Greyson is certain that he's found the perfect assistant. Allie is efficient, productive, and best of all, completely indifferent to him. She dresses like a matron, never flirts with the clients, and is always willing to work late. Physically, she's very clearly not his type. So why is he finding himself increasingly attracted to a woman who looks and acts like an old-school librarian? When he discovers what lies beneath her disguise, his initial anger turns to something more. And soon he will do everything he can to make her his!
I was born in upstate New York, and I've been weaving stories since I was a little girl. But my family was full of mathematicians and scientists, so admitting to a love for writing fiction (or romance!) would have made for some serious teasing around the dinner table every night. I can still recite the square root of pi from memory, and I understand the periodic table of elements, but I get my real joy from writing about relationships. I like strong heroines, loving family members, and slightly goofy animals, and they are all starting to make their appearances in my books.
I really liked this book up until Sean coerced Allie into marrying him, telling her she owes him because she deceived him about her appearance. First off, he has no right to judge her based on how she dresses. If she wants to dress unattractively, that's her choice. Second, he has no right to threaten to fire her just because she has a sexy body. SO WHAT?!?! So she's attractive, and she hid it. That's her flippin business. The is no reason for him to be angry about it. I also hate that he practically forced her to change her look once he found out. I also hate that although she was protesting against him touching her and COMING IN HER HOUSE AND KISSING HER, he still did it anyway. Sexual harassment anyone? Then he has the gall to use this all against her to force her to marry him just because of a lousy picture. I mean, come on! Like that is really necessary? I was really likely the mood between the two up until that point. That whole wedding thing ruined it. But I forced myself to keep reading, hoping it would get better. I didn't like the end and how Sean just happened to meet an old girlfriend in Las Vegas the night before his wedding to Allie, and being kissed by her. Although it was later explained, it tore me up. Even though he explained it, I still feel like he shouldn't even have been close enough to his ex so that she had the chance to kiss him. I think the fact he went to have drinks with his ex at the bar the night before his wedding is cheating even without the forced/unexpected kiss. Ugh.
I'm ranting aren't I? Well, I really wanted to like this book. And I did, to some extent, or I wouldn't have read it in its entirety. It's overall an ok book, but now that I've finished it, I'm feeling unsatisfied.
If you are looking for a short, entertaining, sexy but fun read "Deceiving Her Boss" is the book for you. Can you imagine a prominent, good looking, sexy businessman who is constantly having to fire his assistants because they are constantly trying to lure him down the aisle. Well, his name is Sean Greyson and he had decided that this time he wants a matronly assistant who can keep her eye on business only.
Allie Mitchell has always wanted to work for Mr. Greyson because he is intelligent, successful and could teach her so much. That is why she dons ill fitting clothes, bad make up and wears her hair in a neat matronly bun. After working for Sean a year she accidentally trips into him and he realizes that Allie has a shapely body under those awful clothes.
They travel together, work long hours on projects and Sean realizes that there is something enticing about her. When he sees the real Allie as a bridesmaid in the wedding of one of his competitors he is insistent she tell him what the heck is going on. "Lucy, you gots some splainin' to do!"
This is a sweet romantic story that will leave you wanting more. It is also a fast read. Pick it up and enjoy!
I only made it a quarter of The way thru.. This is going in to my 'started but couldn't finish' pile. It is beyond cheesy.. It's not well written.. The characters have no depth.. I only gave it 2 stars because I thought the premise had potential to be an interesting story. Don't bother.
I loved the start of the book and most of the middle... But the ending was quite rubbish. It lacked depth. The scene where Allie caught Sean kissing another women could have been soo good if the author had elaborated on it more. There also would have been more drama if she had just left instead of saying the responsible thing to do would be to tell him that she was leaving.
I thought the whole marriage plot just came out of no where. The fact that Allie agreed to marriage was beyond me. I thought she would be the smart one since she said she was 'responsible' and say no to marrying sean because of a photograph of the two of them. When Allie was stupid enough to agree, i then thought that Anna was speak some sense into her... But noooo!!! She agreed that it was the right thing to do.
Apart from them to sence's, i loved everything else in the book. I loved that Allie didnt jump straight into bed with her boss and told him straight that she wouldnt sleep with him while she worked for him.
I quite impress in Allie, heroine of this book. She have her own way of thinking and stick to it.
With Sean ,when He tells Allie that he has interest in her even when Allie is in her not-quite-impressive look. But he never really show sign of it until he sees her real self (beautiful , sexy and charm in everyway) he left me with doubt that he really into her because ?
The novel was cocky and sweet. It had this amazing blend of balance that walked a very thin line. I actually loved the heroines morals and values. She was a stand up character, right until the end. The hero ticked me off at times but he got it together.. well... eventually! It was a great read.
Sean was a dick. Totally agree with another review that he shouldn't have gone for a drink in the bar with his ex. That was beyond stupid. And... he had said he wanted an early night... so why go to the bar?? Dick. I think it would've been better if Allie had left and then he was made to work to actually earn her trust... rather than just demand she marry him cos of a picture. Dick.
DNF 35% - tedious. This would have been better if Allie was a junior Analyst than an Assistant. Not sure why the author hates women so much but it relies on clichés such as beautiful women not eating but "pushing food on a plate", or beautiful assistants' hoping to seduce the boss, or women not managing to make it far in the Corporate world as CEOs or even Executives. I thought that sort of sexist thing was all over. Not all women who work in the Corporate world are assistants. Some of us do more than just dairy-management and writing letters (not that there's anything wrong with that but some of us have assistants as well). So enough of the clichés and stereotypes.
I love this book. I regularly re-read this book if I'm in the mood for something fun. Allie was lucky enough to land a job with someone she really admires and wants to learn from, however, she notices his assistants haven't lasted long and they are usually looking to get ahead (usually looking to be his wife). She decides to dress in pretty horrible clothing and wear awful makeup so he will take her seriously. This works for a while until he starts to have feelings for her, ugly clothes and all. He then realizes she will in a wedding of a business associate and he decides to go. Color him surprised when he sees her and realizes she is actually quite beautiful. It makes him mad but he cant fight their attraction any longer. He decides he needs to make her his. I understand where she is coming from and I actually think its almost genius. It's certainly a fun read that will make you laugh and shake your head sometimes. Boss/employee books are my favorite and this one is at the top of my list!
I really liked the last 2 books by this author that I read. But this one's an old-fashioned patriarchal bodice ripper disguised as a contemporary romance. I like alpha male stories every once in awhile, but this was just offensive, particularly given the progress that women have made in the workplace over the past 50 years. And the "premise" of her deception? Since when is dressing in a less attractive manner at work in order to be taken more seriously an unethical "deception" ?!?! Pathetic that she had to in order to get the job? Yes. Wrong on her part? NO. He had no right to be angry or order her to change her work attire to more attractive clothing (argh! Seriously?) He should have apologized right then and there for being a moron!
Sean goes through assistants like people change their underwear apparently until Allie. She deceives him by disguising her beauty by stage make-up and wearing hideous old lady clothes from second hand stores. This doesn't keep the wonder from her boss, Sean Grayson. Once he discovers she is friends with his competition this adds fuel to his ever increasing fire for Allie.
I am not going to say how they get together. The parts I did not like was when he met up at a bar with another female, how he blackmailed her, and there was real expression "I Love You" from him to her.
Good story line. It felt like it was missing something.
I liked the idea of the story that this book tells, but I felt that it was lacking in terms of showing me how the story unfolded rather than telling me. Some of the elements in the story were a bit unbelievable for me. For example, the main couple being photographed and then deciding the only way to deal with their picture getting out in public was to get engaged? I liked the book, but I felt like I couldn't get much depth from it.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I was undecided whether to give this one 3 or 4 stars. While the plot was instantly grabbing at the start, there were several times throughout the book where it just became tedious. I had to argue myself into continuing it twice (I have a "meh" collection on my kindle reserved for books I never finish). It was, however, a very sweet story, and I'm glad I stuck it out to the end. I most likely won't ever revisit it for a second read-through though.
Finding love at work is unavoidable no matter how much you battle it. Allie and Sean made sense together. What was hard to swallow was Sean's avoidance of commitment, in that it was contradictory to his family history and what he experienced growing up. If that could have been fleshed out better, this would have made for a more solid book.
it was a cute story. Easy read. it wasn't the most in-depth story line, as typical with books like this...you know what's coming next. but it was still an enjoyable quick read.
Was a good book but the ending was awful...it just stopped like in a middle of a thought. It was like the author got a call and just hit send without finishing the book, other than that it was a book I enjoyed very much. But just can not get over that ending.
Liked the author's writing style. Story flowed nicely and the relationship developed naturally. Love scenes were written tastefully and without unnecessary explicit details. I enjoyed the book and would love to read more from this author.
Though the ideal of the story was not very new (falling for the boss) I loved that the writer took it to a convincing level in time. The story flows smoothly and the characters are very likable.
