It was ten years now since the Kathryn's brief, youthful marriage to Jon Wright. They had parted in anger any misunderstanding, and she had never seen him again.
Since then, the only important thing in Kathryn's life was security. It was for security that she was now on the verge of marrying Francis Rutland, a man old enough to be her father, for whom she had nothing but a kindly regard. It was hardly the moment for Jon to come back into her life again, and in circumstances which meant she would be seeing him every day.
Still less was there any future in her realizing that she loved him as much as she ever had -- since he made it quite clear that she now meant less than nothing to him.
Lilian Margaret Peake was born on 25 May 1924 in London, England, UK. During the World War II, she moved to the countryside.
Her early ambition was to be a journalist, and she ended up working at various newspapers and magazines around England. She also married and started a family, and eventually she decided start to writing romance novels. She wrote over 65 romance novels for Mills & Boon from 1971 to 1996 as Lilian Peake.
Why do I keep reading Lil? H and h were married 10 years prior to story taking place. H was a grad student mathematician and h was trying to support Grandma and orphaned young brother.
H went to America to study and was supposed to be gone for a year. He wanted h to go with but her family needed her financial and physical support. Instead of coming back after a year, H decides to take another position elsewhere.
Instead of telling him to get his sorry butt back home, h decides to lie and tell H she has met someone else? I was like WTF? Just tell him if he can't get home your divorcing for desertion, which the h did.
10 years later H is back as her boss, living in her house, as he is friends with her brother and driving doormatty h insane until she decides to move on, then passionate declaration of love and HEA. This story truly made no sense whatsoever but I read it anyway and the passionate declaration at the end was good.

This dramatic soap opera has the heroine leaving the hero for his own good and by lying to him. A decade later, she is engaged to a conveniently older man for security. Soon the hero re-enters her life and despises her. We have an amorous stepson, catty OW, a protective brother, a sweet doggo, loads of making out with three men, dramatic confrontations, jealousy and a HEA.
I read this book in my native language many years ago and I can't remember anything about it, that is why I decided to be on the safe side and give it 3 Stars
Edizione italiana 1983.
