اردو کہانی کی تاریخ میں دوسرا منٹو ابھی تک پیدا نہیں ہوا۔ کیونکہ سب سے زیادہ اسی کو پڑھا گیا اور سب سے زیادہ اسی کو کوسا گیا۔ دراصل ہماری معاشرتی تحریمات کے ساتھ المیہ یہ پیش آیا ہے کہ یہ تضادات اور منافقت کی بنیادوں پر استوار ہوئی ہیں۔ نظری اور تصوری سطح پر بلند معیاری اور اخلاقی ترفع کا دعوی مگر عملی طور پر بداعمالیوں کی انتہا کا مظاہرہ!۔۔۔ یہ تضاد ہمارے سماج کی گھٹی میں پڑ چکا ہے اور اس تضاد نے افراد معاشرہ کی سائیکی کو بھی اس نہج پر ڈال دیا ہے۔ منٹو ان منافقانہ معاشرتی تحریمات اور ان کی بدولت وجود آنے والی سائیکی کا ایک بے باک تجزیہ نگار اور ناقد ہے۔ یوں اس کی کہانیاں ہمارے اجتماعی لاشعور کو سامنے لاتی ہیں۔

ہم نے منٹو کی سینکڑوں کہانیوں میں سے صرف بیس منتخب کی ہیں اور ان کو عموما زمانی لحاظ سے ترتیب دیا ہے۔ ابتدائی کہانی سے آخری دور کی اس کہانی تک جو آنے والی کہانی کے اسلوب اور فن کا اشاریہ بنی۔۔۔!!

یہ کہانیاں نہ صرف منٹو کے موضوعاتی تنوع اور وسعت کو ظاہر کرتی ہیں بلکہ اس کے فنی ارتقا کی داستان بھی سناتی ہیں۔ اس مجموعے کی کہانیوں کو ہم نے نہ تو بہترین کہانیاں کہا ہے نہ نمائندہ کہانیاں اور نہ منتخب کہانیاں کیونکہ یہ سب صفات انفرادی پسند و ناپسند کے معیار کا پیمانہ ہوتی ہیں۔ اس لیے ہم نے ان کو محض 'منٹو کی بیس کہانیاں' کہا ہے۔ یہ ہماری پسند کی کہانیاں ہیں۔ منٹو کے افسانوں میں ہماری پسند کے بے شمار دوسرے افسانے بھی موجود ہیں۔ لیکن ایک کتاب کی ضخامت کے لیے ہم نے انہی کہانیوں کو کافی سمجھا۔ کسی فنکار کے فن کے مکمل عرفان اور ادراک کے لیے اس کی جملہ تخلیقات کا تدریجی مطالعہ ضروری ہے لیکن اس بھاگتی ہوئی تیز رفتار دنیا میں اب انتخاب کی اہمیت تسلیم کی جا چکی ہے۔ اس انتخاب کا ایک مقصد منٹو شناسی اور منٹو شناسائی ہے۔

منٹو کا اجمالی سوانحی خاکہ مرتب کر دیا گیا ہے۔ ذہین قاری اس اشاراتی خاکے میں خود رنگ بھر سکتا ہے۔ منٹو کی ان بیس کہانیوں پر ایک تجزیاتی مطالعہ بھی شامل ہے اور منٹو کے فن پر ایک مجموعی محاکمہ بھی درج کیا گیا ہے۔ تاکہ اس مجموعے کا قاری منٹو کی ان بیس کہانیوں کے مطالعے کے ساتھ ساتھ ان کہانیوں کی تفہیم اور منٹو کے فن کو بحیثیت مجموعی دیکھنے اور سمجھنے کی ایک ابتدائی کوشش کو بھی یکجا پائے۔

About the author

Saadat Hasan Manto (Urdu: سعادت حسن منٹو, Hindi: सआदत हसन मंटो), the most widely read and the most controversial short-story writer in Urdu, was born on 11 May 1912 at Sambrala in Punjab's Ludhiana District. In a writing career spanning over two decades he produced twenty-two collections of short stories, one novel, five collections of radio plays, three collections of essays, two collections of reminiscences and many scripts for films. He was tried for obscenity half a dozen times, thrice before and thrice after independence. Not always was he acquitted. Some of Manto's greatest work was produced in the last seven years of his life, a time of great financial and emotional hardship for him. He died a few months short of his forty-third birthday, in January 1955, in Lahore.

I didn't know what to think of Saadat Hasan Manto. I heard good things, but I didn't realize he would be that good. His characterization is so raw and realistic that you connect with them even in the short lived stories that he writes.The stories are simple, captivating, one that leave you pondering over the tales for long after you've finished them. Your heart breaks a little at the end of every story because the end is just too close to reality. This was my first and surely not the last. Now I am in search of a yet bigger collection of his stories.

মান্টোর বিখ্যাত গল্পগুলোর প্রায় সমস্তই বাটোয়ারা কালের। মান্টোর নির্বাচিত একটি সংকলনে টোবাটেক সিং বা ঠাণ্ডা গোশত- এর মতো বিখ্যাত গল্পগুলো আগেই পড়া ছিলো। জাফর আলমের অনুবাদে এই বইটিতে নতুন কিছু দারুণ গল্প পড়া হলো। এক-আধ পৃষ্ঠার কিছু চমকপ্রদ গল্প আছে।

मंटो आपको सच्चाई से सिर्फ मिलाते नहीं हैं, बल्कि उसको महसूस करने का जरिया भी देते हैं। यह बात सभी जानते हैं की मंटो अपने अंदाज के लिए बहुचर्चित हैं। लेकिन उनकी कहानियों कि सरलता उनके, समाज के, और हम सब के औंढेपन से रूबरू होने का जरिया है।

उनके उल्लेख में (कैमोफ्लाज) नहीं होता बल्कि एक झंकझोर देने वाला चित्र होता है जो सिर्फ समाज को ही नहीं अपितु हमारे अंदर के रूप को भी आईना दिखाता है। ऐसा आईना जिसे हमें ढकने में ही चैन मालूम होता है।

मंटो की कहानियां बस पढ़ कर, शेल्फ कि शोभा बढ़ाने के लिए नहीं बनी है। यह कई बंद दरवाजों की चाबियों सा मालूम पड़ता है। और जब भी हम एक ताला खोलते हैं, कई और हमारा इंतजार कर रही होती हैं।

To be fair to Manto, I'm not much into short stories. Probably minus one star for that. Having said that, the stories were a mixed bag, ranging from pathetic (IMHO) to outright excellent. I'll specially mention the ones wherein he described the chaotic times that were the partition of India. The times when men from both the sides left their humanity much behind and seemed to have sold their souls to the devil. The pathos which Manto created in those stories and gave an account of the destruction all around is surreal.

A good read if you are a fan of short stories, if you are not.........well it's up to you.

Manto has always been special for me. His stories are fantastic. flavor of partition , its pain, erotic style in some stories everything. different view of life with different perspective. I can imagine what might have happened during that time .

I knew that Manto is a terrific writer but wasn't aware how terrific. I listened to these gripping stories on Audible in Hindi and it felt like a sharp slap. Realistic, at times raw, with nitty-gritty of human nature, the society and the times, and a strong hold on the stories with real characters, these stories makes numb minds think. They portray such a vivid and complete picture that one cannot remain outside it.

I have not been paying attention to the era of independence of India. It's almost 70 years back but has changed the fabric of indian society. Since I have been reading about it since some time, this book appears like a shining gem in that backdrop. It talks of Mumbai, Pune along with Pakistan and the first two are quite relatable to me. It's like seeing the old pictures of the beloved cities. How these cities have turned millions of lives. And that's the account we get to see in the book too.
Since the book talks about various emotions, love and attraction in raw terms, it might sound offensive to some newbie or sensitive readers. I was amazed how the author talk about it and yet managed to use it as a pivot but not a showstopper. Something like important for the story, but that's never the focus is. The focus is always human nature and its complexity and the story.
A new author in my books collection I am in awe of.

This one doesn't give me an option to rate the publisher n the writing separately. My rating here is for the publisher, Manto's writing is brilliant, full points for that. I tried reading in hindi after ages as I believed hindi would do more justice to Manto's original text in urdu than English ever would. But the print quality is so bad that it seems as if the publisher is punishing the reader for reading in hindi. So I ordered the book by Rajpal publishers. They have a decent print. So for anyone trying to read Manto in hindi, would recommend Rajpal publishers and not kill oneself with this one.
