Daughter of the Goddess

The wind calls her to play.
Will she listen?

Soul. The essence of life, the gods called me. So they named me Nephecia.

My plans don’t include marriage to some silly nobleman. When I come of age, I will take vows and devote my life to serving the goddess of Light. As a priestess, a daughter of the goddess, I’ll make the world a better place.

The summer before my eighteenth birthday, an oracle arrives with word from the gods: I must leave the only home, the only family, I’ve ever known, to marry a stranger in a foreign land.

There must be some mistake.

If I follow my own plans, I’ll disobey the very goddess I want to serve. But how can I trust the gods have my best interest at heart?

Leaving the house to go to school, I had schoolbooks spilling out of one hand, the other holding my place in a Nancy Drew novel, and bunny slippers still on my feet. My mom was a wee bit upset.

I haven't changed much. Still always have a book (or two) in my hand or creating stories in my head, and although I don't have any bunny slippers, I love writing in my jammies and snuggly slipper socks.

With my husband TJ (my own cuddly werewolf), I home-school our three girls, who keep us busy with art, science projects, books to read, dance classes, and walks about the park.

es uno de esos libros que lees y al final no son malos, pero tampoco son buenos.

la trama siento que se estanca en espacio de tiempo que debieron haber pasado rápido, y desde muy temprano ya sabia cual seria el final.

Daughter of the Goddess by Rita Webb is a sweet and heartfelt short story that I fell in love with. I love fantasy books and the author was kind enough to give me a copy of this book. Patches/Peaches has a hard time at the beginning with being mistreated by her mother and my heart just went out to her. When she's taken to the Goddess by her mother as a slave she finds out that things can be turned around for the better. She finds love in her new home. When she comes of age she is to journey to the foreign land and join her soon to be husband. Unfortunately, she is thwarted by the demon Naga who wants to destroy anything and everything the Goddess favors. Will she make it out unscathed, or will she be captured by the horrible demon?
The story is well written and flows nicely over the pages. I love the characters and I am hoping that in the future there might be more on Peaches. I love short stories, but of course with short stories you always want more. I would recommend this to my family and friends and I look forward to more works by author Rita Webb.

"Bet I can climb to the top of that tree faster than you."

Too short! I really want to read this in full length with all the details and whatnots. Peaches really got my attention because of her free-spirited nature and as the story goes on, I found myself cheering for her happiness. I just wished we know more about the gods and goddesses mentioned, as well as the antagonist, Naga.

But despite its length, this story was well-written and heartwarming. It might surprise you with its sudden change in timeline but it has the ability to capture the reader's attention.

An excerpt:

It is late afternoon when I come to the stream. The spring rains muddied the trail, and I slip down the embankment, smudging my white dress. Laughing, I stumble to my feet and splash through the water to the grandfather tree towering on the other side.

“You’re scaring the fish.” A boy, kneeling beside the water, scowls at me. His brown hair hangs in a tangled mess; his piercing blue eyes stare out from a dirty face.

I plop beside him and peer into the water, still rippling from where I tromped through. “Sorry. Catch any tadpoles? I heard the frogs have woken from their winter nap.”

“You’re a girl. Girls don’t like frogs.”

“Looks like you don’t know everything.” I snag a crayfish from under a river rock. It squirms, pincers trying to nip at me. “Some girls don’t mind things that are slimy.”

He grins. “Betcha I can find a bigger bullfrog than you.”

“Don’t think that just because I’m a girl, I can’t beat the socks off you.” I fold my arms across my chest.

“I’m not wearing socks.”

I glance down at his muddy toes. “You’re wasting time. Ready. Get set; go.”

We rush in opposite directions, and I head toward the lily pads where I know the frogs love to sit. I search over and under every pad and lily and then tromp through the mud. I don’t hear one croak or splash, don’t see one frog hopping. Nothing.

And then I spot it. The biggest, fattest bullfrog I’ve ever seen. He glares at me, as if to say, “No way you can catch me.”

I jump and he slides through my fingers. I stumble after him, and he leaps out of reach.

“Come back here, you crazy frog.”

Laughter sounds behind me. I turn to find the boy sitting on a rock, watching me with a big grin on his face. His hands are as empty as mine.

“I’ll chase him your way, and you catch him.” He splashes through the water, and the frog turns and swims straight for me. Using my skirt as a net, I scoop him up. Croaking and wiggling, I can barely hold him. He is so big around it takes both my hands to pick him up.

“Let me see him.” The boy picks him up and looks him in the eyes. “My, you are a big fellow. May you find a fat girlfriend and have many fat babies together.”

The frog croaks back.

“Yes, I’ll let you go.” Then he tosses it back into the water and then gives me a lopsided grin. “Bet I can climb to the top of that tree faster than you.”

Adorable! This story was so much better than the blurb leads you to believe. It is so much more than that. I almost hated to copy and paste the book synopsis because I didn't want to mislead you.
This is a fantasy, "Novella", only 67 pages long. Sometimes when I read a short story/novella I feel cheated, it leaves me wanting more. This story didn't do that. It felt complete. It wasn't lacking and - yes, it did leave me wanting more - more stories by her! Now normally I am not a huge fan of Fantasy, but I just loved this book and read it in two sittings. It was just such a sweet story.
This story tugged at my heart strings right away. I was in tears on the very first page. The whole book is very heartfelt.

"With both her small hands, Patches clutches her worn blanket, folded around some stale bread and a few rotten apples. It's all she has - save for the rags she wears.
If she drops it...
She mustn't. she must be good. Good girls are quiet."

This book, very much, has a fairytale quality to it. To me it felt like a cross between "Cinderella" and "Little Orphan Annie". I would love to see "Disney/Pixar to get its hands on this one!

The character development is excellent, especially for a short story! I had no trouble at all totally falling in love with little patches and later as a grown woman, Neophecia.

The descriptions in this story are equally as good.

"Pillars carved in different shapes - one is a girl with a fish tail for legs and another is a boy with wings - hold an overhang around the edges of the garden. I step out from under the shade, and the sunlight splashes on my face. Closing my eyes, I tilt my face up to catch the warmth on my skin."

"Where have I seen those eyes before? Memories, cold and clammy, claw at my skin like a snake trying to worm inside. I grip my stomach to keep from throwing up."

THE ALL-IN-ALL -
All in all this is a very sweet fairytale about an unwanted girl who struggles to belong and finally finds love - in many places. It has a little of everything - sadness, struggle, adventure, and love.
This is a very clean book - no swearing, no sex. I think it would be fine for young teens.

I've been watching this book on the "People who bought Persephone also bought..." list for awhile. When Rita sent me a review request, I was thrilled to have the chance to read this novella. It was adorable. It was like a fairy tale set in Ancient Greece. Peaches is a horrifically neglected girl(Think Matilda levels of parental negligence) who is given to a local temple to be raised as a priestess. Despite her horrific upbringing, Peaches becomes a strong, beautiful woman. Everyone who sees her knows there's something special about her. She sees a mysterious boy that no one else ever seems to notice and she has also gotten the attention of a less pleasant being. I knew where the book was going the entire time, but it was still a lovely story. Sweet, romantic, uplifting, and wonderful. It's .99 cents. Read it

Although this is a short story it is a GREAT story. Touching, heartfelt, an well written

The story line is in ingenious well thoughtout and very nicely wrapped up for the ending,

You will find yourself cringing for Peaches an on the next page cheering her on.

This book brings out the cold facts on child abuse, the patience to be had while earning to trust someone an feel deserving of unconditional love.

Lovely touching unique ...those would be the three words I would use to describe this book

As five year old Patches stumbled along behind her mother, she realized she was no good. A useless lump of a girl her mother had continually told her, so who was she to say any different. The day she was taken to the Temple of the Goddess she had no idea her life would change – no idea she was destined for anything other than the gutter. Terrified of more beatings – she had known no different – she cringed away from the kindly woman in the kitchen. Mistress Howell became her Mum from then on, loving and kind, with never a harsh word for her.

As newly named Peaches began her new life with the other children, the education, love and kindness was all around them. The Mother was a wonderful woman, with eyes that seemed to sparkle when she looked at Peaches. But Peaches had a heart and soul which flitted with the wind, soared with the sunlight and forever seemed to have her doing the wrong thing. At first she thought she would be punished, but gentle discipline was the way at the temple, and even though the mischief she continued to get up to caused her problems, her lightness of spirit caused delight to all around her.

In her young life, Peaches had encountered the evil Naga, half man, half serpent, but each time was saved from death by the god Elias, the goddess Araphia and a blue-eyed boy. When she was named Nephecia her life within the temple seemed set to her. But suddenly her way of life was snatched from her – a travelling oracle named Wistle took her from the temple, heading for a country many, many days, weeks and months away, where she was set to marry a stranger.

Would Nephecia succeed in her journey with Wistle? The dangers along the way were intense, but the satisfactions were great. The lessons learned made her heart soar, while the sadnesses and horrors made her heart sink to great depths. What would happen to Nephecia? Would her life change again?

Daughter of the Goddess is a delightful, fantastical book. A thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining read, one I have no hesitation in recommending.

Daughter of the Goddess is a fantasy novella that easily will hold your interest.

Peaches has had a rough life her first 5 years. But all that changes within a few minutes of beginning Daughter of the Goddess. She gets taken in by a new "mom" and given to the Goddess to be educated and grow into a woman.

When she is 18, she begins an epic journey to a foreign land to find the man that she is to marry. Her journey is hampered by Naga, the snake-man that has plagued her dreams since she came to the Goddess. Anything that the Goddess favors, Naga wants to destroy.

I became attached to Peaches, and cared what happened to her. She is fully developed and interesting. Daughter of the Goddess moves quickly, and at 85 pages, my complaints have to do with the fact that it is so short.

I don't read many short stories or novellas, simply because I like the full details of the setting, plot, and characters. While Peaches had me rooting for her, none of the secondary characters really mattered to me at all. I would have liked to know more about the world and specifically this religion. When Peaches goes on her journey, people know she belongs to the Goddess. What does that mean to them? There's some mythology here that I think is missing.

Some things happened very quickly. I found myself thinking, "Wait, now what just happened?" And going back to re-read. One example of this is the beginning when Peaches is passed from her evil birth mother, to the woman that pledges to be her new mother, to the Goddess in a matter of a few minutes. I understand this is a characteristic of a novella, and I did understand what happened, but once again, the reason that I don't read very many novellas.

Webb has done a good job with Daughter of the Goddess, and it's worth the short time it takes to read. The ending is tense and also happy. It is easy to read, and I didn't find any grammar or proofreading errors. If Peaches ever returns in future books, I'd like to find out what happens to her.

Patches is a little girl, she's seen 5 harvests. But those days have been full of loneliness and unkindness. It seems that Patches has never been able to do anything right in the sight of her mum or grandmum. But now her mum is taking her to be a slave of the Goddess, Patches isn't quite sure what that means. She soon discovers that the Goddess and the Priestesses that work in her Temple are kind. Patches is given a new name, Peaches, new clothes, love and responsibilities. Life is soon better for her, except for the demon Naga, who seems to want to kill Peaches. Luckily, there always seems to be someone around to save her from Naga just in the nick of time. But will someone always be around to save her, or will Peaches be caught unaware?

I thought that this was a cute novella, it's way short, I was able to read it in under an hour. I wasn't thrilled with Patches/Peaches mother in the first chapter, it made me sad to see someone be so mean to someone so young. But in the end, I could kind of understand her mother. I liked the characters in this book, I would have liked to have seen more of the story, in some places it seemed a little bit too quick, I guess you expect that with such a short story. Overall, this was a really fun book to read!

I was thinking this would be quick fun little romance. What I ended up with was more motivational story. Sort of look inside yourself and face your inner demons. See them for what they are. Also, it brought to mind several of the things that are a bit concerning when it comes to all knowing gods. I found myself rather miffed and grossed out by the god of love following her everywhere but taking a back seat while she got dragged through hardship after hardship. Why are the good guys always passive in their protection. Yet the bad guys are very forceful and in your face. Just doesn't seem right. But I guess the only way for us to understand who we are as individuals is to face the troubles and gain confidence in our abilities. Can't do that if the big guys are always keeping us safe from the slightest wind.

There are some really great descriptive moments in this little story. I did think it was really odd that this holy priestess in training was being instructed in swordsmanship. Why would she ever need that? Even when it plays out to be necessary I wasn't that impressed. So I enjoyed this book but it wasn't as lighthearted as I was hoping.

This book was so beautifully written. I had to fight off tears so many times while following Patches/Peaches through her lifes journey. She was such a remarkable character and I instantly knew she would be one that I would never forget. Being treated worse than a dog by her own mother made me want to pick her up and give her a hug. This could have soured her and made her cold and uncaring, but not Peaches. Her spirit soared and she continued to have compassion and kindness. With the Gods smiling down on her, she is taken to a new home where she finds love and friendship living in the temple.

Peaches as she is called by her new family also had a tendancy to daydream and sometimes find herself exploring nature. I loved the childlike curiosity she caried into adulthood. I know I laughed many times at some of the silly situations she found herself in. I also cringed when the evil demon Naga set his eyes on her, trying to kill her and keep her from following the Goddess.

A fairy tale I will hold close to my heart. Poetically written and truly one of the most beautiful stories I have read to date. Deserves so much more than 5 stars. Just dazzling!

I think when I found out this book existed I did a little happy dance!!! It was the book I'd been searching for a twist on the Eros love story so as you do, I did a little squeal of excitement, followed by clicking the buy button on my kindle repeatedly.
So maybe you could say my expectations were a little high but I have to say I wasn't disappointed it was a lovely little book that was filled with detail a gave you that big grin and the warm feeling when you finished it. The reason it didn't get a five star rating wad because I wished it was a little longer and truer to the original myth and it didn't leave me in awe afterwards.
I recommend this to anyone who loves Greek mythology and is looking for a sweet little book!

This was such a sweet story. I loved how the characters were portrayed, especially the main character Peaches, who had a terrible childhood with her birth mom and got to know what kindness and love was in the temple.

Her journey from childhood to womanhood was poignant and unforgettable. Besides confronting her fears, she learnt to stand up not only for herself, but for others too. She had to learn to place her faith in her religion no matter what dangers she faced. I find her really admirable.

The last quarter of the story is most amazing and it had the best romantic happy ending like, ever. This was a wonderful afternoon read and I recommend it to everyone! (:

No me gusto.
