Vanessa, Serena, Jimena, Catty, and Tiana are five seemingly ordinary girls from Los Angeles. But the truth is that they are all far from ordinary. They each have a secret power that separates them from others--and makes them Daughters of the Moon. Now, on the eve of Vanessa's seventeenth birthday, the Daughters face their final battle against the evil Atrox. But in saving the world will the Daughters lose each other?
Lynne Ewing is an American author and a screen writer.
She always had to move around a lot when she was growing up because her father was in the Marine Corps. She has two sisters. Lynne graduated from high school in Lima, Peru after attending seven other schools. While she was in Peru, she learned to speak Spanish. She attended the University of California at Santa Barbara. When she was 30 years old, she began writing for newspapers, documentaries, magazines, and did screen writing. She also counsels troubled teens. Her first books were Drive-By and Party Girl. Drive-By took six years to write, and Party Girl has been made into a movie called Living the Life. She has written the completed Daughters of the Moon and Sons of the Dark series. She lives in Los Angeles and Washington D.C.. Ms. Ewing has two children, Jonathan, a molecular biologist, and Amber, an international lawyer. She has also traveled to Japan, China, Russia, Europe, Malaysia, Singapore, Laos, Myanmar, and Thailand. She has begun a new series called Sisters of Isis.
This was an extremely disappointing end to the whole series. We found out the Sons of the Dark are dead. What was the Legend of Four even supposed to accomplish? Clearly nothing. Lame.
We find out there will be four new daughters, but I bet they're also going to be like... fifteen and sixteen (most likely sixteen because Maddie in Sons of the Dark was CLEARLY meant to be one, and she was already able to drive on her own), so basically, they get one year to figure it all out before they either die or lose their memories of the whole thing. That whole "seventeen and done" thing is so stupid.
This series had so much greatness to the premise, but clearly, this author couldn't really work with it well enough. It would have been better in someone elses' hands, especially since Vanessa - the most obnoxious character in this entire series - was her favorite. Ugh... Just... Ugh...
I cannot BELIEVE that this book has an average rating of over 4 stars!!! COME ON!! I remember randomly grabbing the first book in this series and devoured them all. It took forever for this book to come out, and when it did, it's like she just threw a bunch of crap in there with the intention of tying up loose ends and FAILED. For a series that I loved(and love) so much, I expected so much better from the 'finale.' I was extremely disappointed, to say the least.
Finally - this is the ending I was hoping for. Action packed and full of easy going details that really helped the story flow well. Although I would have liked to hear from all of the girls, rather than just having it told in Vanessa's point of view, it still was nice to hear a final goodbye from all of them.
I like the idea that Jimena has plans to train a new round of Daughters. And I like that Vanessa is finally starting to accept her gift and like it, even though it's about time since it's the end of the series.
Stanton was actually the comedy in this book - which I found extremely surprising! He was so funny at times when he was rambling off and then yelling at the girls. I am glad that he got his happy ending.
The series had its ups and downs, a couple books I wasn't impressed with, and the usual teenage drama. Overall, I'd rate the series a 3 out of 5 stars.
The actual ending to the series that came out years after the other 12. It took me just a little over an hour to finish, but boy am I glad I found it. A very satifying ending to a great series to grow up with.
Finally completed this series. A bit bittersweet with a couple loose ends and apparently a cliffhanger but overall a great finale. Thank you for bringing back memories from my younger days.
Toward the beginning of high school, possibly 9th grade, I read my very first "Daughters of the Moon" book. I read book two of the series first. Then I read the first second. I continued reading the series out of order, because I was interested in Serena and Vanessa's life but I didn't care too much for Catty's and I didn't like Jimena's character at all. (I ended up coming back and reading Catty's; however, I actually never read any of Jimena's books.) But even reading out of order and skipping books, one could still tell what was going on plot-wise in-between books because the way Lynne Ewing writes, you don't miss much. She explains everything that happens several times throughout a book so that you're not confused and rehashes important information in every single book so one knows what's going on.
In some ways, it's a good thing, like if you forget what happened because it's been a while since the last time you picked up the series. But in other ways, it's almost insulting to one's intelligence. She explains things so much it's like, "Hey! We got it! Moving on!" If an author has to spell things out for you, it's a sign she's not doing a very good job. She explains every little symbol and it's significance... every single time it pops up in the story. She talks about a character, her family, and her powers every time the character is mentioned as if we didn't know who that character was. She also goes into great detail about what every character is wearing... even minor characters every time they change their clothes. Sometimes she stops in the middle of a seriously dangerous situation to start describing someone's fashion. It's like, "Hello! Someone is about to die! We don't care what kind of shoes are on their feet!" Another example is when turns in the plot bring about other events or prophesies are fulfilled and she starts explaining the importance of that event or how that affects other variables... it's annoying because we've already figured it out and we don't need it explained to us like we are in elementary school. A good writer doesn't need to explain the significance of events... if she writes it well enough, readers will be able to figure it out for themselves.
However, despite my criticism of the books, Ewing is an interesting writer and I have to say that her books were some of my favorites in high school. I've even re-read a few of them and I own book six, which is my absolute favorite by the way.
This particular book lacked the luster of the others. It seemed slapped together. The plot did not unfold with as much excitement as the others had and I was disappointed that this one seemed like it was going to have a hopeless ending. It was fairly predictable and a little slow. It did provide a tepid conclusion for me which was better than the previous conclusion Ewing had written... but this ending felt rushed to me like the author just wanted to get it out of the way and move on to other things.
The ending seemed to contradict something that was definitely already resolved leaving loose ends to a book whose sole purpose for being written was in order to tie up loose ends.
Lastly, I was a little saddened by the bittersweet ending and wished it left us on a better note.
I began reading this series about 9 years ago and continued reading as new books came out. Therefore, this review is for the collection as a whole. I have to say that although it has taken a long time to finish, I greatly enjoyed the story. Lynne Ewing's writing, although simple and sometimes repetitive, gave sharp discriptions and decent character development. In general, it was a great teen series. I am very sure, at this point in my life, I would not have the same fulfillment from the series as I once did. Yet, I can't help remembering how much I enjoyed myself when I was reading about these incredible characters and talking about them with my other 12 yr. old friends. After all, pleasure is one of the main reasons we read.
This is still a good book for the reluctant reader, teen girl. This final book for the series felt a bit like the author was phoning it in, though. In fact, the author says she thought she was done, but her fans clamored for another one.
One of the things the girls always knew was that when they turned a certain age, they had to make a Choice. Either they would forget everything about being a goddess, or they wouldn't, but they would no longer be around, and what happens on the other side of that choice is a Big Mystery. Still, in this book there seems to be a work-around for the one that had already reached that age, kind of a soap opera resurrection.
I didn't like how this story ended! I understand that not everything ends just peachy but its still nice when it does in books. To me a happy ending is a nice little constant in books. I didn't want Catty to die or Jamina and Vanessa to forget. It's just frustrating that Vanessa's the only one left and she won't remember why everyone she loved is gone. There's my rant, that's all I have to say on it.
This book was just... Bad. Vanessa is so unlike able and to have her try to act as savior was a stupid idea. The book takes off right where the previous one leaves off and to the authors credit is nonstop action. However, there wasn't a lot of thought put into how the series should reach its end. There was too many conveniences made. Again, it just read as lazy. Perhaps this book would be more appealing to the target audience but to me, it failed.
I have so freaking many unanswered questions. UGH. There should be a spin off (and I do mean more than Sons of the Dark, because as far as I recall they hadn't DIED in those books!!!) I really want freaking answers, this book left me an emotional wreck. I waited like 7 years to finally get my hands on this last book.
I did not like this book at all. For one, it did not tie the loose ends!!! What happened to Maggie's baby??? Or what about Adamantis??? Who/what was the shadow at the end of the book??? Didn't they just kill the Atrox!!!?? I was hoping the book would have answered some questions and tied the loose ends.
Talk about a bad ending. It makes me mad just thinking about it. Terrible ending to a great series. Hate that I have to say that. I tried to like it, but I just couldn't.
Well, it's a good conclusion. Vanessa loses her memory, Catty basically turns into a spirit of sorts after using the Secret Scroll against the Atrox, Jimena starts seeing into the future and accepts her duty, as the next Maggie. I'm not sure what happened to Tianna, but I think Selene took her. And Serena decides to stay with Stan in Nefandus, rather than living her life where there's a moon in the sky. Everything is wrapped up nice and tidy.
In the 5th grade my friend and I just started playing the flute so we signed up for the school lessons. We wanted to be in the school band, so we went to all our lessons and the band teacher told us once we learned enough notes and we can play, then we could be in the band. We really wanted to be in the band with all our friends so we went to all the lessons and we practiced together after school at each others houses, and we never gave up. One day we went to our lesson and he said we had made it to the band, we were so happy, and it was all because we didn’t give up. Just like my friend and I, Vanessa in my book The Final Eclipse By Lynne Ewing never gave up either. She never gave up on save Serena from the Atrox, or evil creature. Fighting to save her friend made her worry and have trouble concentrating. Once she realizes there is more to her, she finds her inner power, the one she can fight to save her friend. Vanessa learned that you can do anything if you never give up and you find your inner power. Any girl who likes fantasy, magic powers, and a little romance here and there would enjoy this book very much.
Okay let’s be honest for a second, Lynne was clearly planning on ending the series with Catty using the scroll to destroy the Atrox from the beginning. It’s an easy out for a predictable ending that works for her level because she integrated that plot point into the story from the start.
Obviously the ending was way too anticlimactic after all that buildup and anticipation, but even throughout the series there could’ve been more background and worldbuilding instead of these random storylines that were just thrown into the books. Like what was the point of having a random warlock in book 9 or having Serena possessed by a weird witchy wind spirit? Like these random storylines serve no purpose to fuel the ultimate ending of this story. And plus why is Pandia even reincarnated into Jimena after all this time? If Pandia was Maggie and the other Daughters early mentor is it a coincidence that she reincarnates after so long during the period when the Atrox is destroyed? Is there another darkness/evil manifesting that the original mentors needs to come back for and help the next round of Daughters for? Honestly that’s the only reason I can think of for as to why there even NEEDS to be another generation of Daughters, like if the Atrox is destroyed then there’s nothing else out to destroy hope right? So what’s the point of even having another generation of Daughters, like what’s gonna try and hurt them if the Atrox is done.
I’m not a writer or anything BUT obviously if I was Lynne’s ghostwriter for this last book I think a more appropriate ALTERNATE ENDING that this STORY DESERVES would go something like Selena FINALLY making a grand entrance as herself (and not some random disguised lady) and transporting the girls through a portal into the dimension where she and the other past and future Daughters reside. This way there’s balance brought to the story through various mechanisms like: A) because the girls were trapped in Nefandus in the beginning of the book and had to endure hardships there, then it makes sense that to balance out their time in the ‘evil’ dimension the girls should rightfully be able to spend part of the story in the ‘good’ dimension (aka Selena and the Daughters dimension) because they earned that. B) by Selena giving these Daughters a chance to be in her dimension this gives each Daughter (and of course the reader) a chance to finally get some closure. None of the Daughters were even given a chance to say bye to Maggie and Tianna before they died, but at least being in the dimension outside of time and space with all future and past daughter these girls could’ve finally said bye to Maggie and Tianna. On top of that we could’ve seen Catty have a beautiful moment with her mother, who’s now a fully reformed Daughter again, a mother-daughter moment that I believe they both deserved. We could’ve seen Jimena communicate with her past self as Pandia with questions answered as to if there’s another evil that’s going to manifest now that the Atrox is about to be destroyed, and/or about their reincarnation cycle and what that has to do with the future generation of Daughters. We could’ve even witnessed another beautiful mother-daughter moment with Tianna finally being reunited with the Daughter who became her adoptive mother and essentially gave her a soul. C) MOST IMPORTANTLY, SELENA HAS SOME EXPLAINING TO DO. All these TEENAGERS RISKED THEIR LIVES and the lives of those closest to them to defeat an ancient evil all in the name of hope, and if it isn’t enough asking teenage girls to have superpowers and defeat evil (without even giving them a choice btw as to whether they even wanted to spend their time battling evil, something we so clearly saw in Vanessa). On top of all that she forces them to make an ultimate choice that’s pretty much a big, terrifying, mysterious lose-lose situation once they reach an age close enough to adulthood. Like as if these girls don’t have enough on their plate, now they have to make a life-altering decision that completely makes them become someone or something else besides being the literal goddesses that they themselves didn’t even believe they were. It’s like Selena forces them to be goddess superheroes and then just abandons them once they get too old. I think each Daughter deserves some closure from Selena as to why they had to suffer and endure so much and even moreso, how each Daughter fits into the master plan of finally defeating the Atrox and what she Daughter uniquely brings to the table, besides their powers.
In my version of an alternate ending after all this closure occurred then Selena along with the rest of all past and future Daughters (which is basically Selena’s army of ‘good’ at this point) would have a grand battle royale fighting the Atrox (who would finally make itself known in its truest form, I’m assuming shadow considering Tianna made sure it couldn’t take human form) with all its followers from the lower tier Followers to the Inner Circle, basically forming the ‘evil’ army. It would be during this battle that Catty would use the scroll to defeat the Atrox, but would probably die doing so. Honestly I think each Daughter was given the right destiny and ending, but I think we could’ve reached the ending in a more satisfying way.
If you’re still reading I know there was a lot of disappointment with the ending so I figured I’d try to come up with another one. obviously if you enjoyed the original ending then this is by no means trying to demean that one at all, but if you were feeling like the ending was a bit more anticlimactic than satisfying then I hope maybe this rough outline of an alternate ending could be what you were looking for. Overall the series was a great read in elementary and middle school because Lynne definitely knew her audience and catered these characters to resonate with different types of girls. Thank you so much Lynne for putting this series into the universe and I hope you decide to continue the story one day with the next generation of Daughters :)

I'm so very sad this series is over. I can't imagine reading it back when it came out, and having to wait months upon months to get the next book. I devoured this entire series in less than 2 weeks!
I am so glad there was a 13th book, because it answered all the questions. (Except Maggie's baby. Seriously, WHY DIDN'T THEY EVER TALK ABOUT HER BABY? Surely whoever her baby was had to have been important, right?)
I was so saddened at the end of this book. I wasn't expecting all of the characters to end the way they did. One of them was obvious, but one surprised me because I didn't believe the author would actually do it. It was such a bittersweet ending, and I shut the book at the end and just sighed.
So now I hear she wrote two other series, Sons of Dark and Sisters of Isis. Those will be read quite soon. =)
Overall I'd give this series 3.5 stars. It was entertaining enough to keep me reading but it got REALLY repetitive there at the end. And the finale? I was kind of disappointed honestly.
SPOILERS:
I mean, OK, so we are with Vanessa again, which kind of sucks, she's a bit of a downer. But what the hell really happened? OK, so Tianna just disappears, so does Catty, Jimena is the new Maggie, Vanessa makes her choice and Serena is with Stanton (about the only GOOD thing I think that happened). I get it all, but it just seemed so...I don't know, boring? I mean, what the hell actually HAPPENED to Tianna and Catty? Are they dead? Who the hell knows. What happened to Kendra? To Kyle? What the hell happened to Chris really? Or to Derek? SOOOO many loose ends.
This is only getting one star because of Stanton and Serena. If not for them, it'd have 0. It was quite obvious that Ewing had stopped caring about this series and it's spin-off, Sons of the Dark, and just wanted to end them. She put no effort into this; she left plot-holes unsolved. She had all this potential and built-up from the other 16 books and did nothing with any of it. Reading DotM and SotD was like going to DisneyWorld everyday and this was one was going to a regular playground and being told it was the exact same thing. Disappointing. Don't believe me? Binge-read the whole series, including SotD (it's awesome), and then this. You'll be just as mad as I am.
AHH!! The very last one!! I looked for this book for years!! The author wasn't going to write this one!! I am so glad she did, or else we would have never known what would have happened!! The book before this leaves the ending completely open!! So many people asked her to write this book!! I, personally, am glad!!
I have mixed emotions about this book. I just didn't like the ending. Only 2 Goddesses left and Vanessa decides to be normal w/o her memories. What so good about being normal anyway lol.
I did like what Jimena said to Vanessa though "When you lose yourself in order to do what you think other people expect from you, then it is." Very true words
I was very sad too see this book series finish. THis book was a great ending for all the books. Vanessa i feel you beucase u feel you would be by yaself becase serena decided too stay in the other world...
